Bartolomé is one of the most photographed and emblematic islets in all of Galápagos. Small, arid and almost lunar in appearance, it owes its fame to an unmistakable postcard: the Pináculo (Pinnacle Rock), a spire of volcanic rock rising beside two twin beaches and a turquoise bay, with the silhouette of Santiago island behind. It is probably the most iconic image of the archipelago.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Bartolomé offers an extraordinary volcanic landscape: spatter cones, lava tubes, ash fields and reddish, ochre formations that look like another planet. A stairway with a wooden boardwalk climbs to a viewpoint at the summit from which you get the famous panorama. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
There are places in Galápagos that look like they belong to another planet, and Bartolomé is the most photographed of them all: a tiny islet, ochre and red, so arid that its ash fields and lava cones recall the surface of the Moon, planted beside a sea of impossible turquoise. That brutal contrast between dead rock and living water is, to a large extent, the secret of its fame.
Bartolomé is a relatively young volcanic islet off the eastern coast of Santiago island, in the center of the Galápagos archipelago. Its origin, like that of every island in the archipelago, is tied to the Galápagos hotspot: a plume of magma beneath the oceanic crust that has produced, over millions of years, a chain of volcanic islands as the Nazca plate drifts southeast over it. The western islands are the youngest and most active; the eastern ones the oldest and most eroded.
Bartolomé preserves a remarkable collection of volcanic forms in a small space: spatter cones, tuff cones, lava tubes, ash fields and flows that look recent. Its poor terrain, almost without soil, supports only very tough pioneer plants, such as the lava cactus (Brachycetheum, the first colonizer of young lava flows) and the tiquilia, a creeping shrub that carpets the volcanic sand.
The islet's highest point is around 114 meters, and its most celebrated feature is the Pináculo (Pinnacle Rock), a sharp spire of basalt and tuff rising beside the bay. It formed through a submarine eruption and the later erosion of a compacted ash cone, sculpted by the surf and the wind into its recognizable shape. A curious and well-documented fact: during the Second World War, the American pilots stationed at the Baltra military base used the Pináculo as target practice; the story is real enough that in 2010 some fishermen dug up a cache of twelve bombs from that era on Bartolomé. Today, by contrast, that same rock is the visual icon of the archipelago.
The island's name pays tribute to a British navy officer. During the hydrographic surveys of the Galápagos Islands carried out in the 1830s —the same ones conducted on the famous second voyage of HMS Beagle, which brought Charles Darwin to the archipelago in 1835— several islands and islets were given English names honoring military figures and personalities of the day. Bartolomé honors Lieutenant David Bartholomew of the Royal Navy.
The Beagle's voyage proved decisive for the history of science: Darwin's observations of Galápagos wildlife, especially the differences between species on different islands, were one of the seeds of his theory of evolution by natural selection, published in 'On the Origin of Species' in 1859.
From the mid-20th century, with the creation of the Galápagos National Park in 1959 and the later declaration of the archipelago as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bartolomé was protected as one of the most popular and most carefully managed visitor sites in the archipelago. Access is strictly regulated: the wooden boardwalk to the viewpoint, for instance, protects the fragile volcanic ground from erosion caused by visitors, in line with the conservation model that governs all of Galápagos.
The second voyage of HMS Beagle (1831-1836), under Captain Robert FitzRoy, had the mission of completing the hydrographic survey of the coasts of South America. On board, as naturalist, traveled a young Charles Darwin, who in September and October 1835 spent five weeks exploring several islands of the Galápagos archipelago, among them Santiago, Bartolomé's neighbor.
During that visit, Darwin collected specimens and took notes on the fauna and flora of the islands. Although his celebrated insight into evolution took shape years later, in London, the differences he observed between the animals of one island and another were key: the variations in the finches, the mockingbirds and the giant tortoises depending on the island they came from suggested to him that species could change and diversify from a common ancestor.
Those observations were one of the seeds of the theory of evolution by natural selection, which Darwin published in 1859 in 'On the Origin of Species', one of the most influential works in the history of science. That is why Galápagos —and with it islets like Bartolomé— has been forever associated with the birth of evolutionary thought.
At first glance, Bartolomé looks like a place where nothing could live: volcanic rock, ash and a sun that beats down without pause. And yet its waters and its shores hold some of the most astonishing encounters in all of Galápagos. The star is the Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus), the only penguin species living in the northern hemisphere —part of the archipelago crosses the equator— and the most northerly on the planet. That a penguin, a bird associated with Antarctic ice, should live practically on the equator is one of the great paradoxes of the archipelago, and it is explained by the cold ocean currents, above all the Humboldt, which drag food-rich water up to these islands.
Those penguins, small and fast, rest on the rocks of the Pináculo and hunt in the bay, where you commonly run into them while snorkeling. Sharing those same waters swim green turtles, rays, whitetip reef sharks and shoals of tropical fish; on the rock perch boobies, lava gulls, herons and pelicans, and in the sky the Galápagos hawk may appear, the archipelago's great native predator.
On the south beach, ringed by a small mangrove stand, green sea turtles come up to lay their eggs in the sand, which is why that shore is usually closed to swimming. It's a reminder that Bartolomé, however 'lunar' it looks, is also a refuge of fragile life. The feeling of swimming beside a penguin in the middle of the tropics, with a spire of lava cut out against the sky, sums up why this tiny island appears on the must-see list of almost everyone who visits Galápagos.
The Galápagos archipelago was annexed by Ecuador in 1832 and, for more than a century, had a history of scattered settlements, penal colonies and resource extraction. Awareness of its unique value grew over the 20th century: in 1959, a hundred years after the publication of 'On the Origin of Species', Ecuador declared 97% of the archipelago's land surface the Galápagos National Park, and that same year the Charles Darwin Foundation was created for scientific research.
In 1978, Galápagos was one of the first sites in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 1986 the Marine Reserve was created as well. Bartolomé, for its beauty and its fragility, became one of the most popular and at the same time most carefully managed visitor sites in the Park.
The Galápagos conservation model regulates tourism strictly: a limited number of visitors per site, walks always with a licensed naturalist guide, marked trails and structures such as Bartolomé's wooden boardwalk, which protects the fragile volcanic ground from erosion. The Park entrance fee —doubled to US$ 200 for foreign visitors in 2024— funds part of this conservation work.
