Origins, formation and what the sources say.
In October 1835, while HMS Beagle carried on surveying other islands, a 26-year-old English naturalist stayed behind, camping for several days on the black coast of an uninhabited Galápagos island, surrounded by giant tortoises, iguanas and lava fields. That naturalist was Charles Darwin, and the island was Santiago: it was one of the islands that marked him most during his time in the archipelago, and it is still one of the best places in the world to see, in the raw, how a volcanic island is born and populated.
Santiago is also known by two other names: San Salvador, its oldest Spanish name (linked to the first island Columbus 'discovered' in the Caribbean), and James, its English name, in honor of King James II of England. This multiplicity of names reflects the different traditions —Spanish and English— that named the islands of the archipelago over the centuries.
During his stay of several days, Darwin studied the island's volcanic geology, its fauna and its flora; the observations he gathered here and on other islands fed the thinking that would later crystallize into his theory of evolution by natural selection.
Its black lava landscape, its tide pools and its coastal wildlife have made it a reference point ever since, both for scientists and, much later, for visitors to the National Park.
Santiago, like the whole archipelago, was born of fire. The Galápagos islands were formed by the activity of a 'hotspot' in the Earth's mantle, over which the Nazca plate slowly moves southeast: as the plate moves, new volcanic islands appear and the older ones drift away and erode. Santiago is one of the central islands, with several eruptive centers and a relief shaped by successive lava flows.
What makes Santiago unique in geological terms is how recent part of its volcanism is. The lava field of Sullivan Bay, on its east coast, was formed by eruptions in the late 19th century (around 1897), which makes it one of the most striking 'fresh' lava landscapes in the islands. The pahoehoe (ropy) lava, black and gleaming, with its rippled shapes, its collapsed tubes and its small spatter cones, is an open book of volcanology on which life is only just beginning to settle.
That geological youth lets you watch the process of biological colonization live: the first pioneer plants, such as Mollugo and lava cactus, cling to the cracks where a little moisture and organic matter gather, starting the slow transformation of bare rock into soil and, over centuries, into forest. In a few kilometers, Santiago shows how islands are born and populated.
Long before the scientists and the tourists arrived, Santiago was the stage for the most adventurous and predatory chapter of Galápagos history. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, English buccaneers and pirates raiding the coasts of the Spanish Pacific used the archipelago as a hideout and a resupply base. The cove known today as Buccaneer Cove (Caleta Bucanero), on the northwest coast of the island, was one of their favorite anchorages: there they repaired their ships, took on fresh water and firewood, and loaded live giant tortoises as provisions, since these animals could survive for months on board without eating or drinking.
From the late 18th century and throughout the 19th, the whalers —mostly British and American— took over. Galápagos became a key stop for whaling in the Pacific, and the tortoises of islands such as Santiago were exploited on a massive scale as fresh meat: it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of tortoises from across the archipelago were taken aboard ships, which severely decimated their populations.
That long era of exploitation left deep ecological scars —tortoise populations wiped out, invasive species introduced— but also a singular historical heritage, echoed in place names such as Buccaneer Cove. Understanding that past helps you appreciate the enormous conservation and restoration effort that came afterwards.
Like many Galápagos islands, Santiago went through centuries of exploitation and human impact. Whalers and buccaneers used it as an anchorage and a source of tortoise meat, decimating its populations. More serious still was the introduction of invasive species: feral goats, pigs and donkeys, which multiplied out of control during the 19th and 20th centuries. The goats devastated the vegetation, and the pigs preyed on the eggs and young of tortoises, iguanas and birds, pushing several native populations to the brink of collapse. In the mid-20th century there was also a short-lived attempt at salt mining in James Bay, which gave Puerto Egas its name.
From the late 20th century, the Galápagos National Park and its partners undertook on Santiago one of the most ambitious invasive-species eradication programs in the world. After years of effort, they completely removed the pigs and then the goats from the island, in an operation that became an international benchmark for ecological restoration on large islands.
The results were remarkable: the vegetation recovered, and with it the populations of giant tortoises, iguanas and birds began to come back. Santiago is today a symbol of how, with will and resources, it is possible to reverse part of the damage done and give an island back its natural balance, a message of hope for conservation across the archipelago.
