Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador and one of the most celebrated in the Andes, not only for its 6,263 meters but for a title that makes it unique on the planet: its summit is the point on the Earth's surface farthest from the center of the Earth. Because the planet bulges at the equator and Chimborazo sits almost on that line, its peak 'beats' Everest if you measure from the planet's core. Standing at the foot of this glaciated colossus is one of the most imposing experiences in the Ecuadorian Sierra.
But Chimborazo is not only for mountaineers. Chimborazo was, for a long time, considered the highest mountain in the world known to Europeans, before the Himalayan peaks were measured. For the region's Indigenous peoples it was —and still is— a sacred mountain, a protective 'taita' (father), tied to myths and to the fertility of the land. In 1802 the famous German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt attempted the climb and, although he did not reach the top, he reached a record altitude for the time, which helped spread the volcano's fame in Europe and drive the scientific study of the Andes. The first documented successful ascent to the summit was made by the English mountaineer Edward Whymper, together with the Italian guides Jean-Antoine and Louis Carrel, in 1880. The volcano, dormant today, is covered by glaciers that, as across the whole range, have retreated markedly because of climate change. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
Long before any scientific expedition arrived, Chimborazo already held a central place in the worldview of the region's Andean peoples. For the Indigenous communities of the central Sierra, the volcano is 'Taita Chimborazo' (Father Chimborazo), a sacred, masculine, protective mountain, tied to the fertility of the land, to the water that runs down from its glaciers and to life on the páramo. In Andean oral tradition, Chimborazo forms a symbolic couple with nearby 'Mama Tungurahua', in stories that personify the great volcanoes and explain natural phenomena through their 'loves' and 'jealousies'.
This sacred relationship with the mountain is not only a thing of the past: it is still alive among the Kichwa communities living on the volcano's slopes, who keep up practices, rituals and a deep respect for the 'taita'. The mountain is a source of water, of pasture for animals and of identity. The name Chimborazo also gave its name to the province that holds it, and the volcano became a national symbol of Ecuador, present even on its coat of arms and mentioned in its anthem.
The páramo that surrounds Chimborazo has historically been the territory of high-altitude herding and farming peoples, adapted to living in one of the most extreme environments in the Andes. This human and spiritual dimension is key to understanding that Chimborazo is not just a 'record-holding' mountain or a sporting objective, but a living being within Andean culture, with centuries of shared history with its people.
For much of history, before the Himalayan peaks were measured and known, Chimborazo was considered by the Western world to be the highest mountain on Earth. That fame, now surpassed in terms of height above sea level (Everest and many other peaks are higher), nevertheless had a real basis in what was known at the time, and it was reinforced by the scientific expeditions that came to study it.
The belief in Chimborazo's supremacy was not a whim: in the geography of the day it really was one of the highest catalogued peaks, and its imposing glaciated bulk, visible from enormous distances right on the equatorial line, impressed everyone who saw it. That reputation made it a coveted target for European explorers and scientists who wanted to measure it, study it and, eventually, conquer its summit.
Over time, measurements of the great Asian ranges pushed Chimborazo down the list of the highest mountains by elevation. But the Ecuadorian volcano had an ace up its sleeve: a different and utterly curious title that modern science would end up confirming and that would give it back, in a sense, the crown of 'highest point'. That title has to do with the shape of the planet itself.
One of the most famous episodes in Chimborazo's history is the attempted ascent by the German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt, in 1802, during his famous journey through the equinoctial regions of America. Humboldt, accompanied by the French botanist Aimé Bonpland and the Ecuadorian scientist Carlos Montúfar, set out to climb the volcano that many then considered the highest in the world.
The expedition did not reach the top —it was stopped by an impassable crevasse, altitude sickness and extreme conditions— but it reached an impressive height for the time, setting an altitude record for human beings that would stand for decades. Beyond the sporting achievement, what really mattered was the scientific dimension: Humboldt made observations on pressure, temperature, vegetation and geology at different altitudes, data that fed his revolutionary ideas about how life and ecosystems change with altitude and latitude.
The experience on Chimborazo was key to Humboldt's thinking and contributed to his integrated vision of nature, in which climate, geography and living things form an interconnected whole. The account of his attempt spread the volcano's fame across Europe and turned it into a romantic icon of scientific exploration. That is why Chimborazo is forever linked to Humboldt's name and to the birth of modern geography and ecology.
The dream of crowning Chimborazo was only realized in 1880, at the hands of the English mountaineer Edward Whymper, one of the great alpinists of his time, famous for making the first ascent of the Matterhorn in the Alps. Whymper traveled to Ecuador with the aim of climbing the great Andean volcanoes and making scientific observations on altitude sickness and physiology at great heights.
He was accompanied by the Italian mountain guides Jean-Antoine Carrel and Louis Carrel, experienced alpinists from the Alps who had already worked with him. Together they reached the summit of Chimborazo for the first time on record. The feat had a wide impact and cemented the presence of alpinism in the Ecuadorian Andes. In tribute to these pioneers, the volcano's two mountain refuges bear their names today: the Refugio Whymper and the Refugio Hermanos Carrel.
Whymper also used his ascents in Ecuador (he climbed several volcanoes during his stay) to study the effects of altitude on the human body, contributing to knowledge of mountain sickness. His book on his travels through the Ecuadorian Andes became a reference work. Since then, Chimborazo has been a classic mountaineering objective, and its technical ascent over glacier still draws climbers from all over the world, always with the seriousness a mountain of more than 6,000 meters demands.
Chimborazo's most fascinating title has nothing to do with height above sea level, but with the shape of the planet. The Earth is not a perfect sphere: because of its rotation, it is flattened at the poles and bulges at the equator, forming what scientists call an ellipsoid or, more precisely, a geoid. That means a point on the equatorial line is, by the very shape of the planet, farther from the center of the Earth than a point at the same elevation near the poles.
Chimborazo lies barely one degree south of the equator, right in the planet's most bulging zone. So although its summit rises 'only' 6,263 meters above sea level —far below Everest's 8,849 meters— when you measure the distance from the center of the Earth to each summit, Chimborazo's turns out to be the farthest from the planet's core, beating Everest's by a little more than two kilometers. In that very specific sense, the peak of Chimborazo is 'the highest point' on the planet, the closest to outer space and to the sun.
This fact, confirmed by highly precise modern measurements, gave Chimborazo back a worldwide profile and became its main tourism calling card. It is a beautiful way to bring geography, astronomy and the geometry of the planet together in a single mountain, and an irresistible argument for anyone who dreams of standing on the point of Earth closest to the stars. Along with the nearby Mitad del Mundo, Chimborazo is a reminder that Ecuador is, in many senses, the country at the center of the world.
In 1987 the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve was created, a protected area covering the high páramo around the Chimborazo and Carihuairazo volcanoes. Its central aim was the conservation of this fragile Andean ecosystem and, very particularly, the reintroduction of the vicuña, the smallest and finest of the wild South American camelids, which had disappeared from Ecuadorian territory.
The reintroduction project was a conservation success story: starting from animals brought in from other Andean countries (such as Peru, Bolivia and Chile), the vicuña population on Chimborazo grew into the thousands of animals that populate the páramo today. Seeing herds of vicuñas trotting across the sand flats with the volcano behind them is one of the finest images of Ecuadorian conservation, and a major tourist draw. The reserve also protects other species, such as the Andean condor, foxes, rabbits and high-altitude birds, along with the páramo's characteristic flora.
But Chimborazo faces serious challenges today, especially climate change. Its glaciers, like those across the whole Andean range, have retreated markedly in recent decades, which affects the landscape, water reserves and the ecosystems that depend on that meltwater. The sacred mountain of the Andean peoples, a geographic record-holder for the planet and a refuge for the vicuñas, is also a visible witness to the global environmental crisis. Caring for Chimborazo —its ice, its páramo, its wildlife and its people— is part of the legacy the place demands of those who visit and study it.
