A medical emergency abroad can cost thousands of dollars, and without cover you pay for it. In many destinations public health care depends on appointments, queues and availability, and private care is paid up front.
On a Working Holiday it matters even more: almost every visa asks for health insurance for the whole stay, and even when it does not, a year abroad without cover is a bad idea. Never travel without travel assistance insurance.
1. Enter the real dates. Departure and return. Price and plans change with the length of the trip, and cover that ends before you are back is the worst surprise.
2. Check for a deductible. A cheaper plan with a deductible costs more the day you use it. For a long stay, look first at the one without.
3. Look at the medical cover amount. It is the cap on what the insurer pays. The more expensive the destination's health system, the higher you want it.
4. Think about what you will do. Work, adventure sports or riding a motorbike often have their own conditions or exclusions. Read that part of the policy before paying, not after.
5. Keep the assistance number. In an emergency, call the assistance first: that is how they coordinate care and spare you from paying out of pocket what you should not.
