Yellowstone looks like a place from another planet: a vast wilderness high in the Rocky Mountains, sitting on a giant volcano that keeps its heart burning below the surface. The result is a natural spectacle unlike any other in the world: geysers firing columns of boiling water at the sky, hot springs in impossible colors (blues, oranges, greens), pools of bubbling mud, white stone terraces and a smell of sulfur that reminds you that, under your feet, the Earth is alive. It is the first national park on the planet, created in 1872, and it is still one of the most astonishing.
But Yellowstone is much more than geothermal phenomena: it is one of North America's great wildlife sanctuaries, where herds of bison, elk, black bears and grizzlies, wolves (successfully reintroduced), pronghorn and a multitude of birds roam free across its meadows, forests and valleys. Yellowstone was, for thousands of years, the territory of Native peoples, who knew and frequented the area and its geothermal features (several peoples, such as the Shoshone, the Crow, the Nez Perce and others, had ties to the region). At the start of the 19th century, American explorers and trappers (such as the legendary John Colter, around 1807) crossed the area and brought back accounts of its geysers, boiling springs and wonders, so incredible that many did not believe them (they jokingly called it 'Colter's Hell'). In the late 1860s and early 1870s, official expeditions (such as Washburn's in 1870 and Hayden's in 1871, the latter with the photographer William Henry Jackson and the painter Thomas Moran) finally documented these wonders with photographs and paintings, convincing the country of their existence and their value. The impact was such that on 1 March 1872 Congress and President Ulysses S. Grant established Yellowstone as a National Park: the first national park in the world, a pioneering idea of preserving a natural space 'for the benefit and enjoyment of the people'. That idea, born at Yellowstone, later spread across the planet. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
Every time Old Faithful fires its column of boiling water at the sky, it is reminding us of something unsettling: a few kilometers beneath your feet, the Earth is literally molten. The whole park sits on one of the largest and most active volcanic systems on the planet, a genuine 'supervolcano'. Below ground, at a relatively shallow depth, there is a huge chamber of magma (molten rock) that forms a hotspot in the Earth's crust. That colossal heat is the engine behind everything that makes Yellowstone unique.
The geological story of the place is marked by giant volcanic eruptions hundreds of thousands of years ago (the last big eruption around 640,000 years ago), so colossal that they partly emptied the magma chamber and caused the ground to collapse, forming an enormous caldera (a vast crater-depression) that covers much of the park. Those eruptions were of a scale that is hard to imagine, among the largest known in the planet's recent geological history.
Today the volcano is still active (though not erupting), and its heat, which keeps the groundwater at extremely high temperatures, is directly responsible for Yellowstone's geothermal show: the geysers, the hot springs, the fumaroles and the mud pots. The park holds around half of the world's active geysers, a unique abundance owed precisely to this burning heart. Scientists keep a close watch on the volcano, but it is important to know that a catastrophic eruption is not expected any time soon: what visitors enjoy is the fascinating and safe manifestation (if you follow the rules) of a living volcano.
Long before the American explorers arrived, the Yellowstone region was known, frequented and inhabited by Native peoples for thousands of years. The idea that the area was 'pristine' and 'uninhabited' before its 'discovery' is a myth: archaeology shows a very ancient human presence in the area, going back millennia.
Several peoples had ties to the region and its resources. The Shoshone (in particular a group known as the 'sheep eaters' or Tukudika, who lived in the mountains), as well as the Crow, the Blackfeet, the Nez Perce and others, hunted, gathered, traded and crossed the area, and knew its geothermal features. Some even used certain local resources, such as obsidian (a volcanic glass) for making tools. These peoples' relationship with the hot springs and geysers was part of their world.
As throughout the history of westward expansion, the creation of the park and the arrival of the settlers took place in a context of dispossession and displacement of Native peoples from their territories. Recognizing this thousands-of-years-old Indigenous presence is part of fully understanding the history of Yellowstone: it was not an empty land 'discovered', but a territory long inhabited and known by its first peoples, whose legacy and memory endure.
Accounts of Yellowstone's wonders reached the rest of the United States at the start of the 19th century, but they were so extraordinary that almost nobody believed them. One of the first to spread them was John Colter, a trapper who had been part of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition and who, around 1807, crossed the region on his own and described its geysers, boiling springs and thermal features. His descriptions of a land of fire, steam and boiling water sounded so fantastical that people took them for exaggerations or lies, and the area was jokingly nicknamed 'Colter's Hell'.
For decades, the stories told by trappers and mountain men about Yellowstone circulated as incredible legends: geysers that shot water at the sky, rivers that steamed, mountains of glass, mud that bubbled. Few believed them. Official confirmation came only between 1869 and 1871, with several organized expeditions. The most decisive was the Hayden expedition of 1871, led by the geologist Ferdinand Hayden, which included the photographer William Henry Jackson and the painter Thomas Moran.
It was precisely Jackson's photographs and Moran's spectacular paintings that changed everything: for the first time, the country could see with its own eyes that the 'tall tales' were true, that those wonders really existed. Those images caused a sensation and were key to convincing Congress and public opinion of Yellowstone's extraordinary value, and of the need to protect it. Art and photography, then, helped save Yellowstone.
The historical fact that makes Yellowstone unique beyond its beauty is that it was the world's first national park. On 1 March 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the act, passed by Congress, that established Yellowstone National Park, setting aside that vast expanse of land to protect it and 'dedicate and set it apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people'.
It was a revolutionary, pioneering idea. For the first time in history, a government decided to protect a large natural territory not for its economic use (mining, farming) but precisely to preserve its natural wonders intact and keep them as a public good, accessible to everyone and to future generations. The concept of the 'national park', born here at Yellowstone, was completely new. Until then, great natural spaces were not usually thought of as worth protecting in their own right.
The impact of that decision was enormous and lasting: the national park idea, launched at Yellowstone, became a model that spread first across the rest of the United States (which created many other parks and, in 1916, the National Park Service) and then around the world. Today there are thousands of national parks in practically every country on the planet, all of them heirs to that pioneering idea. Yellowstone is not just an extraordinary park: it is the cradle of one of the most important and most successful conservation concepts in history.
Through the 20th century, Yellowstone established itself as a great sanctuary of nature and wildlife, and as a laboratory of conservation, not without lessons learned and course corrections. In its early decades, its management included practices that today would be considered mistakes, such as the removal of predators. The most emblematic case was the wolves: at the start of the 20th century, wolves were hunted and wiped out from the park, on the grounds that they threatened other animals and livestock. Their disappearance, however, unbalanced the ecosystem (elk herds, for example, soared and overgrazed the vegetation).
One of the greatest achievements of modern conservation came in 1995, when, after decades of absence, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone. The experiment was a remarkable success: the wolves thrived and bred, and their return helped rebalance the ecosystem in a famous 'trophic cascade' (by keeping elk numbers in check, riverside vegetation recovered, which benefited other species). The return of the wolves is now a celebrated example of ecological restoration, and seeing wolves in the wild is one of the park's great draws.
Yellowstone's universal value won international recognition in 1978, when UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site for its exceptional combination of geothermal features (the greatest concentration of geysers on the planet), its grand landscape and its rich biodiversity. Today Yellowstone receives millions of visitors a year and remains a global beacon of conservation: a place where the wilderness, the living volcano and the free-roaming wildlife remind us of the greatness of the natural world and of the importance of protecting it, just as was decided, for the first time, more than 150 years ago.
