The El Tatio geothermal field was known and respected from pre-Hispanic times by the Atacameño (Likanantai) peoples, who saw these steaming springs as a place charged with meaning. The name 'Tatio' is usually linked to words from Andean languages; one of the most widespread readings connects it to the idea of the 'oven' or 'the weeping grandfather', though its exact origin is disputed. El Tatio's geothermal activity comes from the volcanism of the Andes: rain and meltwater seep underground, are heated by contact with magma chambers and return to the surface as geysers, fumaroles and hot springs. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
At 4,300 meters, in the driest desert on the planet and under a sky that is still black, the earth boils. Before the sun comes up, dozens of columns of steam rise from the frozen altiplano floor: that image — unreal, almost otherworldly — is El Tatio. Technically, the El Tatio Geysers are a geothermal field: an area where the Earth's internal heat reaches the surface through geysers, fumaroles, hot springs and bubbling mud pots. It lies high in the Andes, above 4,300 meters, in the Antofagasta Region, some 90 kilometers north of San Pedro de Atacama. It is one of the highest geyser fields in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere, with dozens of active vents scattered across an altiplano valley ringed by volcanoes.
The phenomenon comes down to the area's geology. El Tatio sits on an active volcanic region of the central Andes. Rain and meltwater from the peaks seep underground where, on contact with rock heated by magma chambers, they warm intensely. That water, under pressure, rises back toward the surface and, finding cracks and conduits, erupts as geysers (intermittent jets of water and steam), fumaroles (steam vents) and hot springs.
A geyser works like a kind of natural pressure cooker: the underground water superheats and, on reaching a certain pressure, escapes upward all at once as a column of steam and boiling water. At El Tatio this happens simultaneously at many points, above all in the cold hours before dawn, when the contrast with the freezing air makes the fumaroles especially spectacular.
The name 'Tatio' comes from the Andean languages of the region and its exact meaning is open to several readings, which adds an air of mystery to the place. The area was always the territory of the Atacameño (Likanantai) peoples, speakers of Kunza, a language now virtually extinct, and it also felt the influence of Quechua and other Andean tongues, which makes the precise origin of the place name hard to trace.
One of the most widespread readings links 'Tatio' to the idea of an 'oven', or the place where the earth cooks and boils, an obvious reference to its geothermal activity. Another much-repeated version translates it poetically as 'the weeping grandfather', associating the steam columns and the water welling up with the image of a wise old man of the mountains. There are further readings tied to the rising sun or to the idea of a 'sob', always circling the image of rising vapor.
Whatever the exact etymology, what is certain is that for the Indigenous peoples El Tatio was a special place charged with meaning: a site where the earth itself showed up alive and powerful, amid a setting of volcanoes considered sacred. That spiritual, ancestral relationship with the territory remains important for the Atacameño communities who guard and administer the site today.
Long before it became a tourist attraction, El Tatio was part of the world of the Atacameño (Likanantai) peoples, who for millennia inhabited the oases and ravines of the Atacama Desert and traveled the high routes of the cordillera. For them, this territory of volcanoes, bofedales and steaming springs was no ordinary place but part of a landscape charged with spiritual meaning, where the mountains (the 'mallku', or tutelary peaks) and the waters held sacred value.
Nearby villages such as Caspana, Toconce and other altiplano hamlets keep to this day an ancestral relationship with these highlands, where they herd llamas and alpacas, farm on terraces and preserve traditions, language (what survives of Kunza) and ceremonies bound to earth and water. The bofedales of El Tatio and its surroundings are also a source of water and pasture for livestock, vital resources in so arid a setting.
This historical connection is essential to understanding El Tatio today: the Atacameño communities assert their standing as the owners and guardians of the territory, and now take part in its administration and in decisions about its use. The defense of El Tatio against projects that might damage it — such as the attempts at industrial geothermal development — was led in large part by these communities, who see the place as both a natural heritage and a cultural legacy of their own.
El Tatio's enormous energy potential did not go unnoticed. Through the 20th century there were studies and surveys assessing the possibility of generating geothermal power from the heat underground, a renewable source and, in theory, an attractive one for a country as energy-dependent as Chile. Exploratory drilling was carried out at various times to gauge the capacity of the geothermal field.
The most notorious and controversial episode came in 2009, when an exploratory well on a geothermal project ran out of control: a drilling operation triggered the uncontrolled release of a gigantic column of steam and water that stayed active for weeks, in what became known as a 'blowout'. Images of that huge artificial fumarole traveled across the country and set off the alarm.
The incident provoked a fierce reaction from the Atacameño communities, from environmental organizations and from public opinion, all of whom saw one of northern Chile's most emblematic and fragile landscapes under threat. Social and environmental pressure, along with the technical difficulties and the reputational damage, ultimately halted plans for industrial energy development at El Tatio. The episode became a symbol of the conflict between exploiting natural resources and conserving heritage and the rights of Indigenous communities.
Once industrial energy development was ruled out, El Tatio consolidated its calling as one of the great tourist destinations of northern Chile and as a natural and cultural heritage site to be protected. Today it's an unmissable stop on the classic Atacama circuit, taking in hundreds of visitors every pre-dawn who come up from San Pedro de Atacama to witness the spectacle of the fumaroles at sunrise.
An important feature of El Tatio today is that its administration lies largely in the hands of the local Atacameño communities (from villages such as Caspana and Toconce), who charge admission, run the site, maintain the trails and pools, and look after the balance between tourism and conservation. This community management model is an example of how Indigenous peoples reclaim control of their territory and draw economic benefit from tourism while protecting a place of high ecological and symbolic value.
The challenge at El Tatio, as at so many emblematic natural sites, is to handle the growing flow of visitors without damaging the fragile geothermal ecosystem or the bofedales and wildlife around it. That is why so much emphasis is placed on staying on the trails and not leaving the designated areas (for safety too, given the very real danger of the boiling water) and on following the instructions of guides and administrators. Visiting El Tatio respectfully is the best way to help preserve this geothermal heart of the altiplano for the generations to come.
