📌Where it is
Rio de Janeiro's Zona Sul, between the Jardim de Alah canal, which separates it from Ipanema, and the Dois Irmãos hill, at the foot of the Mirante do Leblon. It is the last beach in the Zona Sul before the tunnel to São Conrado.
📌Getting there
Metro Line 4: Jardim de Alah station, a few blocks from the sand; also Antero de Quental, in the heart of the neighbourhood. Several bus lines run along the seafront.
📌How much time to spend
Half a day on the beach, plus an afternoon for the neighbourhood: the Mirante do Leblon, Rua Dias Ferreira and its restaurants, and the walk to the Lagoa.
📌Best time to go
All year round. In summer it is packed and the sea is warmer; in autumn and spring it is left almost to the locals. You can watch the sunset behind the Dois Irmãos from the sand itself.
📌Currency and prices
Brazilian real (R$). The beach is free; the neighbourhood, on the other hand, is one of the most expensive in Brazil for eating and staying.
📌Language
Portuguese; English and Spanish are spoken in restaurants and shops.
📌What surprises people most
The Baixo Bebê: a stretch of sand designed for families with young kids, with play equipment, shade and calmer water. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the city.
📌Watch out for
The sea near the canal and on rough days, when the currents are strong. And the neighbourhood prices: lunch on Dias Ferreira costs as much as a whole day in Copacabana.

Leblon is the beach where Rio slows down. It sits right next to Ipanema, separated only by the Jardim de Alah canal, but the feel is different: more local, more family-oriented, fewer vendors, more people who live round the corner and walk down with a beach chair under their arm. The sand ends at the foot of the Dois Irmãos hill, with the Vidigal favela climbing the slope, and on that point stands the Mirante do Leblon, one of the best viewpoints in the city.
The neighbourhood around it is the most expensive in Rio and one of the most expensive in Brazil, but also the most pleasant to walk: tree-lined streets, wide pavements, Rua Dias Ferreira turned into a food corridor, bookshops, cinemas and a residential air that translates into calm on the beach. On the sand, the Baixo Bebê section, with play equipment and facilities for small children, is a rarity that families discover and never give up.
Here we tell you how to make the most of it: which stretch to choose depending on who you are with, how chair rental works, where to watch the sunset, how to get there by metro without detours and what to do nearby, from the loop around the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to the climb up to the viewpoint. A public beach, free access and one of the most beautiful views in the country as a backdrop.
📖 History of Praia do Leblon
The name comes from Charles Le Blond, a French merchant who in the 19th century owned land in the area, then a strip of sandbanks and mangroves between the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and the sea. For much of the 19th century the area was linked to the Chácara do Leblon, where the abolitionist José de Seixas Magalhães sheltered escaped slaves in the years before the Lei Áurea of 1888, an episode that is part of the neighbourhood's memory. Urban development arrived in the early 20th century, after the opening of Avenida Niemeyer and the construction of the Jardim de Alah canal, inaugurated in the 1920s to connect the Lagoa with the sea. From the fifties and sixties onwards, Leblon grew on the back of Ipanema's boom and established itself as Rio's wealthiest residential neighbourhood. Today it stands for relative calm in an intense city: the beach has its own code, more family-oriented towards the canal and sportier towards Posto 12, and the neighbourhood has the highest concentration of good restaurants in the city in just a few blocks, with Rua Dias Ferreira at its centre. The Mirante do Leblon, on Avenida Niemeyer, is the spot where you can see it all together: beach, Dois Irmãos, Vidigal and the open Atlantic.

1
The Mirante do Leblon (Alto Leblon)
The lookout over the western tip of the beach, at the start of Avenida Niemeyer, with a full view of Leblon, Ipanema and the Dois Irmãos.
Leer más ↓
Heading up Avenida Niemeyer, just where the beach ends, there is a viewpoint with an open view of the sea and the whole Zona Sul coastline: you can see the sands of Leblon and Ipanema lined up, the Pedra do Arpoador in the distance and, on the other side, the wall of the Dois Irmãos with Vidigal perched on it. Below, the waves break against the rocks and there are usually surfers.
It is a classic sunset spot and also popular with anglers. It is a few minutes' walk from the western end of the beach, and it marks the start of the scenic road to São Conrado. At night it is quieter: better to go in daylight.
Getting there: on foot from the end of the beach or by taxi along Avenida Niemeyer. Best time: late afternoon. Tips: pair it with a coffee in Alto Leblon before heading down to the sand.
2
The Baixo Bebê
The stretch of sand designed for families with young kids, near the canal: play equipment, shade, showers and calmer water.
Leer más ↓
At the end of Leblon facing the Jardim de Alah canal you will find the Baixo Bebê, a stretch of beach organised by and for families with small children. It has playground equipment set up on the sand, shade, showers, lifeguards and water that is usually calmer than along the rest of the coast, sheltered by the point.
It began as a residents' initiative and became a trademark of the neighbourhood: it is rare to find a space designed this way on an urban beach. At weekends it fills up with local carioca families, and the atmosphere is more neighbourhood playground than tourist beach.
Getting there: eastern end of the beach, by the canal; Jardim de Alah metro. Best time: morning, before the sun gets strong. Tips: arrive early to get shade near the play area.
3
Rua Dias Ferreira
Rio's most concentrated food corridor: a few blocks with dozens of top-notch restaurants, bars and cafés.
Leer más ↓
Rua Dias Ferreira, running parallel to the beach a few blocks inland, is the hub of Leblon's food scene and probably the street where you eat best in Rio. Within a few blocks you will find contemporary Brazilian restaurants, Italian and Japanese places, wine bars, pasta houses, artisanal ice cream shops and bars that fill up after the beach.
It is an expensive street, but it also has classic botequins where you can have a chopp and a pastel at a reasonable price. The night starts early and runs late, especially from Thursday to Saturday.
Getting there: on foot from the beach, three or four blocks inland. Best time: evening. Tips: in high season it is worth booking; many places have pavement tables that fill up first.
4
The Jardim de Alah canal and the walk to the Lagoa
The canal that separates Leblon from Ipanema and connects the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas with the sea, with gardens, a cycle path and the most direct access to the lagoon circuit.
Leer más ↓
The Jardim de Alah is the green strip surrounding the canal dug in the twenties to connect the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas with the ocean. Today it is an urban park with paths, sports courts, play areas and shade, and it acts as a hinge between Leblon, Ipanema and the Lagoa.
From here you can reach the lagoon circuit in minutes, a loop of about seven and a half kilometres with a cycle path and running track that is the Zona Sul's great open-air gym. It is the natural late-afternoon outing, when the sun sinks behind the hills and the lagoon fills with rowers, runners and pedal boats.
Getting there: Jardim de Alah metro, or on foot from the beach. Best time: late afternoon. Tips: renting a bike to ride all the way round the Lagoa is one of the best cheap things to do in the city.
5
The view of the Dois Irmãos and Vidigal
The two twin hills that close off the beach to the west, with the Vidigal favela on the slope and the trail that climbs to the top.
Leer más ↓
The Dois Irmãos are Leblon's visual signature: two granite peaks just over five hundred metres high that close off the bay and frame every photo of the beach. On the slope sits Vidigal, one of Rio's best-known favelas, with one of the best views of the city.
From Vidigal starts the trilha do Morro Dois Irmãos, a trail that climbs in just under an hour to a lookout over Leblon, Ipanema, the Lagoa, Christ the Redeemer and, on the other side, São Conrado and the Pedra da Gávea. It is a popular hike best done in the morning, after checking the situation in the community that day; most people go up with local guides or in organised groups.
Getting there: access via Vidigal, from Avenida Niemeyer, by moto-taxi or van to the trailhead. Best time: early morning, with clear skies. Tips: check the day's conditions before going up and avoid going alone.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Leblon and Ipanema?+
They are the same strip of sand, separated by the Jardim de Alah canal, but the vibe changes. Ipanema is younger, more touristy and busier; Leblon is more family-oriented and local, with fewer vendors and the Baixo Bebê section designed for small children. The Leblon neighbourhood is the most expensive in the city for eating and sleeping.
What is the Baixo Bebê?+
A stretch of beach near the canal set up for families with young kids: it has play equipment on the sand, shade, showers, lifeguards and usually calmer water. It is a Leblon peculiarity not found on other beaches in the city, and at weekends it fills up with carioca families.
How do I get there by metro?+
On Line 4, getting off at Jardim de Alah, next to the canal at the eastern end of the beach, or at Antero de Quental, in the centre of the neighbourhood. From the Centro you need to change from Line 1 at General Osório. The trip costs R$ 7,90, the public fare in force since 12 April 2026.
Do you pay anything at the beach?+
No, access is open and free. You only pay for what you eat and drink and, if you want, the chair and umbrella you rent from a stall on the sand; each stall sets its own price, so it's worth asking before you sit down.
Can you climb Morro Dois Irmãos?+
Yes. The trail starts in Vidigal, on the side of the hill, which you reach from Avenida Niemeyer by motorbike taxi or van. The climb takes less than an hour, and the view from the top takes in Leblon, Ipanema, the Lagoa, Christ the Redeemer and São Conrado. It's best to go in the morning, check the day's situation in the community beforehand and not go up alone.
Where's the best place to eat?+
Rua Dias Ferreira is Rio's densest food street: dozens of top restaurants packed into a few blocks. If you're after something cheaper, the botequins on the nearby streets serve chopp and bar food at normal prices, and on the beach there are the kiosks along the calçadão.
Is it good for swimming?+
The sea is the same as in Ipanema, with waves and currents, although the stretch near the canal tends to be more sheltered and is the one families choose. Swim near a lifeguard post and during daylight hours; when there's a heavy swell, it's better to stay at the water's edge.
