📌State
Praia Grande is a municipality in the far south of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, right on the border with Rio Grande do Sul. Don't confuse it with Praia Grande in São Paulo, the beach city on the São Paulo coast: this one is a farming town in a valley, with no sea, 45 metres above sea level, at the foot of the cliffs of the Serra Geral. According to the 2022 IBGE census it has 8.270 inhabitants, and the IBGE estimates 8.696 for 2025, across an area of about 284 km². The name comes from the tropeiros (mule drivers), who called the rounded-pebble banks of its rivers 'praia grande' (big beach). It calls itself the 'Capital dos Canyons' because this is where you enter the canyons of the Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral National Parks from below: the Trilha do Rio do Boi, which runs through the inside of the Cânion Itaimbezinho, starts in its territory, and the Malacara, Índios Coroados and Molha Coco canyons are minutes from the centre. It is part of the Geoparque Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul, recognised by Unesco in 2022. In recent years it has gained another draw: hot-air balloon flights at dawn facing the canyons, an activity that came under new ANAC rules after the accident of June 2025. The upper rims of Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza are visited from Cambará do Sul, on the Rio Grande do Sul side, by driving up the mountains.
📌Currency
Brazilian real (R$). Urbia's canyon tickets can be paid with PIX, debit or credit card, and at the physical ticket office also in cash; online you can pay in up to 3 instalments (source: Urbia's Política de Ingressos and website, verified October 2026). To buy online or at the ticket office you'll be asked for a CPF (the Brazilian tax number); if you're a foreigner and don't have one, check with Urbia before you travel or buy through an agency. Pousadas and restaurants in town use PIX and cards a lot, but for private waterfalls and rural roads bring some cash
📌Best time to go
You can go year-round, but the weather in the mountains changes suddenly. Urbia warns that fog ('cerração' and 'viração') can cover the canyons in minutes and that this does not entitle you to a refund. For the Rio do Boi, summer is best: one blog recommends December to March and another October to April, because in winter the water is very cold; after heavy rain the ICMBio closes the trail due to the risk of flash floods. To see the rims from above, a clear day matters more than the season: keep a spare day in your itinerary in case the morning is socked in
📌Visa
Argentines, Uruguayans, Paraguayans, Chileans, Colombians and Peruvians can enter Brazil as tourists with a valid national ID card or a passport, under the Mercosur and Associated States travel documents agreement. Mexicans have not needed a tourist visa since May 2013, but they enter with a passport. Bring the original document: at the park ticket offices you'll be asked for photo ID (RG, passport, DNI) from age 12, and a birth certificate or equivalent for children under 12

🌤️ Weather in Praia Grande
Loading weather…
Praia Grande is the bottom side of southern Brazil's canyons. While almost everyone looks at Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza from the rim, in Cambará do Sul, here the plan is to go in from the floor: walk along the bed of the Rio do Boi between sheer walls, swim in the pools of the Malacara or watch the sunrise from a balloon with the mountains in front of you. It's a small, quiet town surrounded by banana plantations and rice fields, with pousadas scattered around Vila Rosa and the Serra do Faxinal.
The advantage of staying here is that you have both sides of the national parks at hand: the inside of the canyons from the valley and, when the road allows, the rims of Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza by heading up the mountains. There are trails for every level, from 300 metres up the Morro dos Cabritos to the 14 km of the Rio do Boi, which require an accredited guide and good fitness. And plenty of private waterfalls you can visit by paying a small fee at the gate.
It's best to come with time and without rushing. Fog can wipe out an entire canyon in minutes, the Rio do Boi closes when it rains hard and the climb up the Serra do Faxinal is still under construction with restricted hours. With two or three days you have room for the weather to let you see what you came for. In return, the place gives you basalt cliffs, Atlantic forest, araucaria woods and highland grasslands all within a few kilometres, the landscape for which Unesco recognised the geopark.
📖 History of Praia Grande
Before the Europeans, the valley and the plateau were the territory of the Guarani, Xokleng and Kaingang, who opened the first paths between the coast and the fields above. In the 18th century the first farms appeared, worked by labourers, tenants and enslaved people who came down from the ranches in the mountains. The tropeiros, who drove cattle between the plateau and the coast, named the place 'Praia Grande' after the big banks of rounded stones in its rivers. In the 19th century German and Portuguese settlers arrived from Rio Grande do Sul, and later Italians. Vila Rosa became a trading post on the tropeiros' route and the town grew along the banks of the Mampituba River. In the 1940s the first road to northern Santa Catarina (SC-108) opened. Praia Grande became an independent municipality in 1958: its official founding date is 19 July 1958. A year later, on 17 December 1959, the Aparados da Serra National Park was created to protect Itaimbezinho; in 1972 its boundaries were revised and in 1992 the Serra Geral National Park was created next to it, including Fortaleza and Malacara. In 2021 the ICMBio granted the concession for visits to both parks to Urbia Cânions Verdes, which began charging admission on 1 October that year. In April 2022 Unesco recognised the Geoparque Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul. Ballooning became the town's other trademark, until on 21 June 2025 a balloon carrying 21 people caught fire and fell: eight died. ANAC issued transitional rules from December 2025 and Praia Grande was the first municipality with authorised companies. In 2026 the paving of the Serra do Faxinal (SC-290) is moving forward; the road was closed from April to August and partially reopened.

The flagship canyon of the Aparados da Serra National Park: 5,8 km long with walls over 700 metres high, and viewpoints over waterfalls.
Leer más ↓
Itaimbezinho is the canyon that led to the creation of the Aparados da Serra National Park, set up in 1959 to protect it. Its name comes from Tupi-Guarani and combines the words for 'stone' and 'sharp'. According to Urbia, the concession holder, it is about 5,8 km long with gorges over 700 metres deep; the official leaflet speaks of 600 to 750 m deep and 2 km wide.
The visit from above starts at the Itaimbezinho visitor area, 18 km from the centre of Cambará do Sul on a gravel road. There are three signposted trails: the Vértice (short, to see the waterfalls of the Perdizes stream dropping into the canyon), the Cotovelo (flat, about 6 km return, which you can also do by bike) and the Camisas, which continues on from the Cotovelo. Official durations vary depending on which Urbia source you check: Vértice 1 h to 1 h 30, Cotovelo 2 h 30 to 3 h, Camisas 3 to 4 h.
From Praia Grande you get there by climbing the Serra do Faxinal, which in 2026 is still under construction and only opens in time slots: check the schedule before setting out. The same ticket works for Fortaleza: it allows 3 entries within 7 days. Bring a warm layer even if it's hot down below: up top it's windy and the weather changes fast.
ℹ️ Distance: Visitor area 18 km from Cambará do Sul (gravel); from Praia Grande via the Serra do Faxinal · Best time to go: Clear days; fog can cover everything · Admission: R$ 97 adult; over-60s R$ 68; free for children up to 6 and registered residents of Cambará do Sul, Praia Grande, Jacinto Machado and Mampituba (source: urbiaparques.com.br and Urbia's Política de Ingressos, verified October 2026). Trilha do Rio do Boi (Itaimbezinho from the inside)
14 km return along the riverbed, inside Itaimbezinho, with a mandatory accredited guide and more than 20 river crossings.
Leer más ↓
This is the hike that made Praia Grande famous: instead of looking at Itaimbezinho from above, you go in from the floor following the Rio do Boi between enormous walls. Urbia describes it as a route of about 14 km return, through stretches of forest and along the riverbed itself, highly difficult and taking about 7 hours with stops. One blog counts more than 20 river crossings.
The rules are strict. You must go with a guide or conductor accredited by the ICMBio, the minimum age is 12, places are limited and booking is required. Access to the PIC Rio do Boi (the entry post) is from 8 to 11 am and you must be out before late afternoon; the 2026 risk waiver sets the exit time at 6 pm. Gaiters (perneiras) and hiking boots are mandatory. Urbia warns about flash floods ('trombas d'água'), rockfall on the final stretch and snakes.
The post is 18 km from the centre of Praia Grande on an unpaved road. If the ICMBio closes the trail because of rain, you can ask to reschedule that same day until 4 pm. The Rio do Boi ticket does not include the Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza visitor areas.
ℹ️ Distance: PIC Rio do Boi, 18 km from the centre of Praia Grande (dirt road) · Best time to go: Summer (December to March according to one blog); closes after heavy rain · Admission: Separate ticket of R$ 97 according to one blog (source: viagensecaminhos.com, January 2026) plus the guide, paid separately; Urbia doesn't publish the price outside its booking system (verified October 2026) · Duration: About 7 hours; entry 8 to 11 am

Basalt cliffs stretching 7,5 km, the Mirante with views over the canyon and the Pedra do Segredo, a 30-tonne balancing rock.
Leer más ↓
Fortaleza is the other big visitor area: Urbia speaks of 7,5 km in length, 2 km in width and cliffs rising over 1.000 metres. It's in the Serra Geral National Park, on the border between Cambará do Sul (RS) and Jacinto Machado (SC), 23 km from the centre of Cambará.
The official trails are the Mirante (about 3,5 km return according to one blog, uphill), the Pedra do Segredo, the Borda Sul (long, a guide is a good idea), the Borda do Estacionamento and the Quebra-Cangalha, which starts from the Alto do Mirante. The Pedra do Segredo is a basalt block of about 5 metres and 30 tonnes resting on a tiny base. Nearby is the viewpoint for the Cachoeira do Tigre Preto, which falls in three tiers; from the rim you only see the top part.
A guide is suggested but not mandatory, and there's no minimum age. There's a ticket office, parking, food and toilets. Urbia also sells an 'Amanhecer no Cânion Fortaleza' to watch the sunrise, and there's a 720-metre zip line. The ticket is the same as for Itaimbezinho.
ℹ️ Distance: 23 km from the centre of Cambará do Sul; from Praia Grande, up the mountains · Best time to go: Clear mornings; sunrise with Urbia's special product · Admission: R$ 97 adult; over-60s R$ 68; free for children up to 6 and registered residents of Cambará do Sul, Praia Grande, Jacinto Machado and Mampituba (source: urbiaparques.com.br and Urbia's Política de Ingressos, verified October 2026). A January 2026 blog reports R$ 107 and R$ 75 (source: viagensecaminhos.com, January 2026): confirm the day's price at canionsverdes.urbiapass.com.br · Duration: Half a day or a full day; open 8 am to 5 pm

Cânion Malacara (river trail)
A short guided walk from Vila Rosa to clear-water pools between the walls of the Malacara, 6 km from the centre.
Leer más ↓
Malacara is the canyon closest to the centre of Praia Grande among those with a guided trail inside. One blog gives it 3,5 km in length and walls of 780 to 1.000 metres. The trail starts in Vila Rosa, opposite the entrance to the Pousada Pedra Afiada, 6 km from the centre.
It's about 2 km each way (4 km return) following the river, easy to moderate. With stops and a swim, allow 3 to 4 hours. At the end there are small waterfalls and natural pools of clear water. You must go with a park-accredited guide, hired through the agencies in town; blogs say prices are similar across agencies, but they don't publish them.
It's the ideal option if you're not fit enough for the Rio do Boi or if you're travelling with older kids. In summer the swim is the best part of the outing; in winter the water is freezing. Visits along the upper rim of the Malacara were not open according to the same blog. The Restô do Pedra Afiada bills itself as the only restaurant inside the canyon.
ℹ️ Distance: 6 km from the centre of Praia Grande (Vila Rosa) · Best time to go: Summer, for swimming in the pools · Admission: No published price: you pay the accredited guide, hired through agencies in Praia Grande (source: viagensecaminhos.com, March 2026) · Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Cânion Índios Coroados and its Cachoeiras Gêmeas
A canyon on the SC–RS border with a waterfall of about 100 metres that splits into two parallel drops; the viewpoint is 600 metres away.
Leer más ↓
Índios Coroados is on the climb up the Serra do Faxinal, near the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Its highlight is the Cachoeiras Gêmeas (twin waterfalls): a drop of about 100 metres in total that starts as a single 10-metre fall and then splits into two parallel cascades.
According to one blog, a 600-metre trail leads to the main viewpoint, facing the falls head-on; another 2 km trail along the top, with a side view, requires a guide. Another guide describes access from the south side: about 15 minutes of easy walking from the abandoned inspection post at the border, with no signage. Sources disagree on whether you need a guide for the south side, so ask at your pousada before going alone.
Access is via the Serra do Faxinal (SC-290 in Santa Catarina, RS-427 on the Rio Grande do Sul side), about 15 km from Praia Grande. Since the road is under construction with limited crossing times in 2026, combine the visit with the drive up to Cambará and check that day's opening hours.
ℹ️ Distance: About 15 km from Praia Grande, via the Serra do Faxinal · Best time to go: After rainy days the falls carry more water · Admission: We found no published rate (source: viagensecaminhos.com and maladeaventuras.com, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Serra do Faxinal and Morro dos Cabritos
The 13 km climb of hairpin bends between Praia Grande and Cambará do Sul, with the Morro dos Cabritos viewpoint 300 metres from the road.
Leer más ↓
The Serra do Faxinal is the road linking Praia Grande with Cambará do Sul and the canyon rims. One blog describes its mountain section as 13 km of very tight bends, with views mainly over the Malacara. For years it was dirt and stone; now the Santa Catarina government is paving it (SC-290), with an investment the press puts at between R$ 70 and 76 million.
Watch out for its condition in 2026: it was fully closed from 13 April to 18 August for the construction of a viaduct at the Morro dos Cabritos. Since 18 August it has been open on one lane with a 'pare e siga' (stop-and-go) system, for cars and motorbikes only. According to the Secretaria de Infraestrutura (SIE): Monday to Friday 7:30 to 8:30 and 16:30 to 17:30, Saturdays 7:30 to 8:30 and 11 to 12, closed on Sundays. Other outlets published slightly different times, and opening is suspended in rain or fog.
The Morro dos Cabritos is halfway up the mountain: a 300-metre trail climbs to a flat summit, about 300 metres above the valley, with 360° views of the Rio do Boi and Pedra Branca valleys.
ℹ️ Distance: Starts a few km from the centre of Praia Grande · Best time to go: Clear days; stick to the roadworks crossing slots · Admission: Free (public road; crossing times according to SIE/Government of SC, August 2026) · Duration: Mountain crossing: depends on the slot; viewpoint 30 minutes

Sunrise hot-air balloon flight (voo de balão)
About 45 minutes in the air over the valley facing the cliffs of the Serra Geral, almost always departing at dawn.
Leer más ↓
Ballooning is Praia Grande's other trademark. Flights almost always leave at dawn, when the wind is calm, and last on average 45 minutes in the air; with inflation, flight and packing up the experience takes around 1 h 30, and about 2 h 30 with transfers, according to one blog. After landing there's usually a toast with sparkling wine. Balloons carry 2 to 24 passengers depending on size.
You should know what happened: on 21 June 2025 a balloon carrying 21 people caught fire and fell in Praia Grande; eight died. Flights were suspended for a few days and resumed on 2 July 2025. ANAC then approved transitional rules, in force from 1 December 2025 to December 2026: mandatory insurance, minimum equipment on board, specific licences for pilots and certification signed by an aeronautical engineer. Praia Grande was the first municipality in the country with companies authorised by ANAC.
Before paying, ask the company for the balloon's ANAC registration and the pilot's licence. The flight is cancelled if the weather doesn't cooperate, so book it for your first morning and leave some slack.
ℹ️ Distance: Departures from Praia Grande (transfer included depending on the operator) · Best time to go: Year-round; calm, clear mornings · Admission: From R$ 498 per person (source: viagensecaminhos.com, 2025 price); on Civitatis from US$ 130,13 (price shown in dollars, verified October 2026) · Duration: 45 minutes of flight; about 3 hours in total

Trilha do Morro do Campestre
A climb from Vila Rosa to a grassy summit between three canyons, with 360° views over the cliffs and the town.
Leer más ↓
If you want a wide view of the canyons without driving up to Cambará, the Morro do Campestre is the hike. According to one blog, the trail climbs to an open, grassy summit set between three canyons, with 360° views of the cliffs and the town. From the top you can partly see the Molha Coco, the small, wild canyon between the Malacara and the Índios Coroados that has no tourist facilities.
The hike starts and ends in Vila Rosa, the pousada area a few kilometres from the centre. The standard route takes about 3 hours and the full loop, which adds the Cachoeira da Rosinha, about 4 hours. Another account rates it as moderate with a mandatory guide; the blog mentions that the agency Grota Turismo runs it.
It's best done early, before the valley fog rises, with water, a cap and sunscreen: the top is open with no shade. It's a good plan for your arrival day or for a day when the Serra do Faxinal is closed, since it doesn't depend on that road.
ℹ️ Distance: Starts in Vila Rosa, near the centre of Praia Grande · Best time to go: Clear mornings, year-round · Admission: No published price: book through local agencies such as Grota (source: viagensecaminhos.com, March 2026) · Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Cachoeira dos Borges
A 70-metre waterfall in a private park with cabins and camping, at the headwaters of the Mampituba, 18 km from the centre.
Leer más ↓
Cachoeira dos Borges is a 70-metre waterfall inside a private park. Technically it lies in Mampituba, already on the Rio Grande do Sul side, at the headwaters of the Mampituba river, but the easiest access is from Praia Grande: it's about 18 km from the town centre.
There are two trails to see it: one from above (about 45 minutes) and one from below (about 40 minutes), according to a travel blog. The park is open from 9 am to 5 pm and asks you to book your visit at least 24 hours in advance. There is an admission fee, but the amount wasn't published in the sources we checked.
The same place also works as accommodation: Cachoeira dos Borges Cabanas has cabins and camping, plus a restaurant with wifi. If you stay the night, visiting the waterfall is much more relaxed. Combine it on the same day with Malacara or with Cachoeira dos Ventura, which are in the same rural area.
ℹ️ Distance: 18 km from the centre of Praia Grande · Best time: Spring and summer; after rain there's more water · Admission: Paid admission, amount not published; book 24 h in advance (source: viagensecaminhos.com, March 2026) · Duration: 40 to 45 minutes per trail; 9 am to 5 pm

Cascata da Magia das Águas
A 40-metre waterfall in native forest at the start of the Serra do Faxinal, 3 km from the centre, with a 600-metre self-guided trail.
Leer más ↓
This is the waterfall closest to the centre: Cascata da Magia das Águas is 40 metres high and sits in an area of native forest at the start of the Serra do Faxinal, 3 km from Praia Grande. It's on private land belonging to Pousada Itambé.
You get there on a well-signposted, 600-metre self-guided trail. There's a visitor fee, but the amount wasn't published in the sources we checked. The waterfall is also one of the abseiling points on the 'Goteira' canyoning circuit run by the agency Grota.
It's a good outing for the afternoon of your arrival day or for a foggy day in the mountains, because you don't need to drive up. Wear shoes that can get wet and bring some cash for the fee. If you're interested in abseiling, ask the agencies in town, which offer waterfall descents in the area.
ℹ️ Distance: 3 km from the centre of Praia Grande · Best time: All year round · Admission: Visitor fee, amount not published (source: viagensecaminhos.com, March 2026) · Duration: 1 hour

Cachoeira dos Ventura
A 35-metre waterfall on the Ventura family's land, in the Rio do Boi community, with a 1,5 km trail through Atlantic Forest and banana plantations.
Leer más ↓
Cachoeira dos Ventura is 35 metres high and lies on the Ventura family's private property, in the Rio do Boi community, 8 km from the centre of Praia Grande. It's one of the favourites for abseiling.
You reach it on a self-guided trail of about 1,5 km each way, which passes through Atlantic Forest and banana plantations; the round trip takes about 2 hours, according to a travel blog. The fee is paid on site, and the amount wasn't published in the sources we checked.
Since it's on the same road that leads to the Rio do Boi entrance post, you can add it to a day exploring the valley, though not on the same day as the long trail. Wear hiking shoes: the path gets muddy when it rains. And take your rubbish back with you, as on any rural property.
ℹ️ Distance: 8 km from the centre of Praia Grande (Rio do Boi community) · Best time: Spring and summer · Admission: Fee paid on site, amount not published (source: viagensecaminhos.com, March 2026) · Duration: About 2 hours round trip

The town on the plateau, in Rio Grande do Sul, from which you reach the rims of Itaimbezinho (18 km) and Fortaleza (23 km).
Leer más ↓
Cambará do Sul is the flip side of Praia Grande: it sits up high, in the highland grasslands of Rio Grande do Sul, and is the gateway to the Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza sections. According to Urbia, Itaimbezinho is 18 km from its centre on a gravel road and Fortaleza is 23 km. The Urbia Cânions Verdes headquarters is at Avenida Getúlio Vargas 1140.
For anyone coming from Porto Alegre (185 km) or Gramado (113 km), Cambará is the natural base. If you want to do Rio do Boi, Malacara and the balloon flight, Praia Grande is the better choice. Many travellers split their nights between the two. One blog puts the distance between the towns at 36 km via the Serra do Faxinal, which in 2026 has restricted crossing times because of roadworks.
Trout (truta) is the signature dish and is served in most restaurants, and in winter araucaria pine nuts appear. If you're driving up from Praia Grande for just one day, leave in the first morning crossing window and plan to come back in the afternoon one.
ℹ️ Distance: 36 km from Praia Grande via the Serra do Faxinal (according to a blog) · Best time: All year round · Admission: Free (the town); the canyons are paid separately (source: urbiaparques.com.br, verified October 2026) · Duration: One night or a day trip

Parque Municipal Poço do Bira and central Praia Grande
The river beach that gave the town its name, on the banks of the Mampituba, and the square with the Igreja São Sebastião in the centre.
Leer más ↓
Parque Municipal Poço do Bira, also called Balneário Mampituba, is the river beach that, according to a local blog, gave the town its name: the stony banks of the Mampituba river that the tropeiros called 'praia grande'. It's very close to the centre and access is free. In summer it fills up with locals who come down to cool off in the river's cold water.
In the centre you'll find the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião and, opposite it, São Sebastião square, with trees, benches and a children's playground; it's a nice spot for late afternoon. The centre also has some of the town's restaurants, such as Black House 414, on Rua Irineu Bornhausen, and Casarão, on Rua Ricardo Inácio.
It's not a place worth travelling for in itself, but it's great for free time between trails: a dip in the river after a day of hiking, an ice cream in the square or a craft beer at Grota Bier, a few blocks away on Rua Abel Esteves de Aguiar.
ℹ️ Distance: In the centre of Praia Grande · Best time: Summer, for swimming in the river · Admission: Free · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

🚌 How to get there and distances
Getting around
PriceNo public transport to the parks. Parking at Itaimbezinho/Fortaleza: car R$ 20 per entry (source: viagensecaminhos.com, January 2026); free at Rio do Boi (Urbia's Política de Ingressos, 2025)
NotesIt's the most practical way to get around. The roads to the canyons are gravel or dirt: drive slowly and don't set off with a nearly empty tank. One blog recommends renting a car because there are no regular buses to the parks.
Serra do Faxinal (SC-290) under the pare e siga (stop-and-go) system
NotesCars and motorbikes only. Monday to Friday 7:30–8:30 and 16:30–17:30; Saturdays 7:30–8:30 and 11–12; closed on Sundays (SIE, August 2026). Other outlets published 7–8 and 17–18. Suspended in rain or fog. Check with the Prefeitura or the SIE before setting off.
Agency transfer (Rio do Boi, Malacara, canyons)
PriceIncluded in packages such as the R$ 400 Rio do Boi one (source: maladeaventuras.com, December 2023); today, ask for a quote
NotesFor Rio do Boi one blog recommends paying for the transfer: the road to the entrance post is rocky. The agencies in town pick you up at your pousada.
PriceR$ 35 rental for the trilha do Cotovelo (source: viagensecaminhos.com, January 2026)
NotesUrbia offers bikes at the Itaimbezinho section. The trilha do Cotovelo is flat, about 6 km round trip.
Regional bus (Sombrio, Araranguá, Criciúma ↔ Praia Grande)
PriceSombrio R$ 24; Araranguá R$ 38; Criciúma R$ 59 (source: Buson, aggregator, verified October 2026)
NotesOne departure a day towards Praia Grande on each route (Criciúma 15:30, Araranguá 16:15, Sombrio 16:55). Operated by Empresa União and Expresso São Marcos according to Buson. Useful for getting to the town, not for reaching the canyons.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What document do I need to enter Brazil?+
Argentines, Uruguayans, Paraguayans, Chileans, Colombians and Peruvians can enter as tourists with a valid national ID card or a passport, under the Mercosur and Associated States travel documents agreement. Mexicans have not needed a tourist visa since May 2013, but they enter with a passport. Photocopies and driving licences are not accepted. At the parks you'll be asked for photo ID from age 12 to validate your admission, and for the Rio do Boi the guide's form asks for a CPF, national ID or passport for each hiker. If you're travelling with minors, check the authorisation your country requires.
Is it better to stay in Praia Grande or in Cambará do Sul?+
It depends on what you want to do. Praia Grande is the base for the Rio do Boi, the Malacara, the valley waterfalls and the balloon flight. Cambará do Sul is closer to the canyon rims: Itaimbezinho is 18 km away and Fortaleza 23 km, according to Urbia. Until the Serra do Faxinal roadworks are finished — in 2026 the road only opens in one-hour windows and is closed on Sundays — crossing from one town to the other in a day takes planning. The most comfortable option is to split your nights: two in Praia Grande for the valley and one or two in Cambará for the rims. If you only have one day, go for the Rio do Boi or Fortaleza depending on your fitness.
Can I do the Trilha do Rio do Boi on my own?+
No. You must go with a guide or conductor accredited by ICMBio, the minimum age is 12, places are limited and you have to book your entry in Urbia's system. You enter the checkpoint between 8:00 and 11:00. It's about 14 km there and back, with more than 20 river crossings, and takes around 7 hours. Urbia rates it as highly difficult and warns of flash floods and rockfall. If it rains heavily, ICMBio closes it; in that case you can ask to reschedule on the same day until 16:00. Gaiters and hiking boots are mandatory, and bring food and water for the whole day.
How many days do I need?+
With three full days you can see the main sights without rushing: one for the Rio do Boi, another for the Malacara or Morro do Campestre and the waterfalls, and another to go up to Fortaleza and Itaimbezinho. Add the early-morning balloon flight if you're interested. Also leave a spare day: fog can hide the canyons and the Rio do Boi is suspended when it rains. Urbia's ticket lets you go back up to three times within seven days, so if one day dawns socked in you can try again without paying twice. With two days, do the Rio do Boi and one rim; with just one, pick one of the two.
Do I need a car?+
Pretty much, yes. There's no public transport to the parks or to most of the waterfalls, and the roads are dirt or gravel. You can get to Praia Grande by bus: there's one daily departure from Criciúma, Araranguá and Sombrio, which connect with Florianópolis and Porto Alegre. But once in town you'll depend on the agencies, which include transfers on tours such as the Rio do Boi. If you drive, keep in mind parking at Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza (car R$ 20 per visit according to a January 2026 blog) and the crossing times on the Serra do Faxinal. Lorries, buses and motorhomes cannot use the mountain road while the works last.
Is the balloon flight safe?+
In June 2025 a balloon caught fire and crashed in Praia Grande, and eight people died. Since then ANAC has issued temporary rules (in force from 1 December 2025 until December 2026) requiring mandatory insurance, minimum on-board equipment, a specific pilot licence and certification by an aeronautical engineer. Praia Grande was the first municipality with companies authorised by ANAC. Before paying, ask for the balloon's registration, the pilot's licence and proof of authorisation, and be wary of prices well below the rest. The flight is cancelled if wind or fog don't cooperate, so book it for your first morning and ask about the rescheduling policy before paying.
What happens if it's cloudy or raining?+
It's common. Urbia warns that the 'cerração' and the 'viração', the region's typical fogs, can wipe out the canyon views in an instant, and that this doesn't entitle you to a refund. You can reschedule once at no cost if you give 12 hours' notice, and the ticket is valid for three visits within seven days. The Rio do Boi has a different rule: if ICMBio closes it because of the weather, there's rescheduling and there are refund exceptions. Foggy days are good for the valley waterfalls, the Poço do Bira or a long lunch. Always bring a waterproof jacket and warm layers: up top it can be much colder than in town.
