Home Affairs updated its news page today: the expected average processing time is now around three months for most applications. The same notice was placed on the second 462 visa page, with a harder phrase: do not buy flights until it is granted. And they added that you must be on the correct side of the border on the day of the grant.

Working Holiday Australia: the guide →Viajar a Australia →

On 23 September 2026, the Department of Home Affairs updated the "Latest news" section of the Working Holiday Maker programme. Everything that follows is verbatim quotes from official pages. Where the source does not say something, we say so in those words.

What the news page says, verbatim

"The number of Working Holiday Makers is at a record level. To manage high demand and support the long-term sustainability of the WHM program, we are normalising processing timeframes for most WHM visa applications. The average processing time is expected to be around three months."

In plain terms: there is a record number of people in the programme and, to sustain it, they are going to "normalise" processing times. The expected average is now around three months.

It's worth reading the three words that qualify the sentence, because they are theirs and not ours: it says "most", the majority, not all —and it doesn't specify which ones are left out—; it says "average", an average, not a guaranteed deadline; and it says "around". The page does not publish an effective date. The only dated item is the stamp at the foot of the page, which says "Last updated: 23/09/2026 3:52 PM", with no time zone given.

Where you have to be on the day it's granted

"WHM applicants must be in the correct location when their visa is granted. If you applied in Australia, you must be in Australia when we grant your visa. If you applied outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when we grant your visa."

In plain terms: if you applied from inside Australia, you have to be in Australia on the day it's granted. If you applied from outside, you have to be outside.

And on the same page: "We recommend that you wait until we grant your visa before booking flights or making travel, work or study commitments."

The same notice is on the second visa page, and there it is an order

On the official Second Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) page there is a blue box at the very top with this text, which is not the same as the one in the news section:

"We are normalising processing timeframes for most WHM visa applications. The average processing time is expected to be around three months. Do not book flights or make travel, work or study commitments until we grant your visa."

In the news section they "recommend" waiting. On the second visa page they say it as an imperative: do not buy flights. It is the same information, said more forcefully, on the application page.

What the official source says about the quotas

The official quota status table, updated on 21 September 2026, shows Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Spain with the status paused for the first Work and Holiday 462.

And that same page says, word for word: «Each program year, there is a limit, or 'cap', on the number of first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visas that we can grant to applicants from certain countries. There are no caps for second or third Work and Holiday visas.»

🛡️ Getting sick far from home shouldn't cost you thousands of USD

Abroad, getting sick is more than a bad day. In many destinations public healthcare depends on appointments, queues and availability, and private care is paid upfront. An emergency can cost thousands of USD, right when you are far from home and on a tight budget. That is why I recommend you never leave without travel assistance.

I recommend GO! Assistance because it covers what matters: medical care, emergencies, medication and hospitalization depending on the plan. It protects you 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world, with real-time solutions on the ground. GO! 365 ECO and GO! 365 give you USD 45,000 of global coverage: the first with a USD 100 deductible, the second with none.

If you quote from Argentina, in October GO! also offers 12 interest-free instalments on selected products.
