As the story goes, it was the glare of the Catatumbo lightning that allowed a lookout posted on the coast to spot Drake's ships in the dead of night and raise the alarm to repel the assault. Something similar is told of the Battle of Lake Maracaibo in 1823, during the wars of independence, when the phenomenon is said to have exposed the movement of ships once again. Somewhere between documented history and legend, these accounts fed the fame of the Catatumbo as a Venezuelan natural wonder.
