Stonehenge is one of the most enigmatic and famous places on the planet: a circle of colossal stones raised in the middle of Salisbury Plain some 5,000 years ago, long before the pyramids of Egypt were finished and millennia before the Romans or the druids it is often mistakenly associated with. Seeing those masses of stone outlined against the Wiltshire sky, knowing that Neolithic men and women transported, shaped and raised them without metal, without the wheel and without draught animals, produces an emotion that is hard to explain.
The monument we see today is only the heart of an enormous sacred landscape, sown with burial mounds, ceremonial avenues and other monuments such as Durrington Walls and Woodhenge, all declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Its stones hold mysteries science is still unravelling: where they came from, how the 'bluestones' got here from Wales, or the recent surprise that the great Altar Stone travelled from northeast Scotland, more than 700 km away. And above all, the big question: what was it built for?

Stonehenge was built in stages over more than 1,500 years, between roughly 3000 and 1500 BC, in the Neolithic and the early Bronze Age. It all began around 3000 BC with a circular earthwork enclosure — a ditch and a bank — inside which 56 pits were dug, the so-called Aubrey Holes, where numerous cremation burials have been found: the site worked, in fact, as one of the largest cemeteries of its time in Britain. Centuries later came the stones: first the bluestones, brought from the Preseli Hills in southwest Wales, some 250 km away, and later the gigantic sarsens, sandstone blocks of up to 25 tonnes from about 25 km to the north, with which the great circle and the imposing trilithons (two upright stones topped by a lintel) were raised. The monument is aligned with sunrise at the summer solstice and with sunset at the winter one, which reveals deep astronomical knowledge. Recent research also discovered that the Altar Stone, at the centre, came from northeast Scotland, more than 700 km away, an astonishing journey. Nearby were the settlements of Durrington Walls, where its builders probably lived. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
Long before the pyramids of Giza existed as we know them, and millennia before Rome had an empire, something extraordinary was already being built on a chalk plateau in southern England. Salisbury Plain, in today's county of Wiltshire, was during the Neolithic and the Bronze Age one of the most important ceremonial centres in Europe: a territory sown with enclosures, avenues, barrows and monuments that people raised and visited for more than a thousand years. Stonehenge, the stone circle everyone knows, is only the most famous piece of that vast puzzle.
Understanding Stonehenge means looking beyond the stones. Around it spread hundreds of burial mounds (barrows), Bronze Age tombs grouped into whole cemeteries; the Cursus, an enormous elongated earthwork almost 3 kilometres long and of unknown purpose, older than the circle itself; and, a few kilometres away, the monuments of Durrington Walls and Woodhenge, linked to the builders. That whole complex, along with the Avebury complex a little further north, has been inscribed since 1986 as a Unesco World Heritage Site under the name 'Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites'.
It is important to underline something science has gradually confirmed: the people who built Stonehenge left no texts, because they did not know writing. Everything we know comes from archaeology, that is, from excavating, carbon dating, chemically analysing the stones and the bones, and comparing. That is why the story of Stonehenge is a story under construction, full of solid certainties but also of open questions and hypotheses debated rigorously. And that is also why it is worth distrusting the fantastical explanations — aliens, wizards, mysterious energies — that surround the monument: the real history, the one revealed by the patient work of archaeologists, is more than enough to marvel at.
Stonehenge was not built in one go but over more than fifteen hundred years, in successive stages that transformed the place between roughly 3000 and 1500 BC. What we see today is the superimposition of several different monuments built by generations very far apart from one another.
The first phase, around 3000 BC, had no great stones at all: it consisted of a circular earthwork enclosure, a henge, formed by a ditch dug with antler tools and two chalk banks. Inside that circle, the builders dug 56 pits, known today as the Aubrey Holes (after the antiquarian John Aubrey, who noticed them in the seventeenth century). For a long time they were thought to have held timber posts, but recent research suggests they probably held the first bluestones. Most significantly, numerous human cremations have been found in those pits and in the ditch: Stonehenge began, to a large extent, as a cemetery, one of the largest of the third millennium BC in Britain.
The most spectacular phase came centuries later, around 2500 BC, when the great stones that give the monument its unmistakable outline were raised. The sarsens, enormous blocks of hard sandstone, were put up to form the outer circle of stones joined by lintels and, inside, five colossal trilithons arranged in a horseshoe. The smaller bluestones were rearranged among them. The engineering is astonishing: the lintels are fixed to the uprights with mortise and tenon joints taken from carpentry, and the lintel ring was curved and levelled with precision. All of it was done without metal, without the wheel and without draught animals, only with ropes, wooden levers, ramps, human strength and a social organisation capable of coordinating the work of hundreds or thousands of people over generations.
One of the greatest puzzles of Stonehenge is the origin of its stones, and here research in recent decades has taken some surprising turns. Three types of stone must be distinguished, with three very different origins.
The sarsens, the biggest stones (some over 25 tonnes and 7 metres), are of local silcrete sandstone: a 2020 study confirmed that most come from West Woods, in the Marlborough Downs, some 25 kilometres north of the monument. Dragging such masses that distance is already a feat, but the real mystery is the bluestones. These smaller, bluish stones are not local: they come from the Preseli Hills, in southwest Wales, some 250 kilometres away. That Neolithic people transported dozens of these stones over such a distance — by land, by sea, or by a combination of both — is one of the great debates in archaeology. The exact quarries in Wales have even been identified, such as Carn Goedog and Craig Rhos-y-felin, and some researchers argue that the stones may first have formed a circle in Wales that was later dismantled and moved.
And in 2024 came the biggest surprise. For a century it was believed that the Altar Stone, the great sandstone slab almost 5 metres long lying at the centre of the monument, also came from Wales. But a study published in the journal Nature, after analysing the age and chemistry of the stone's minerals (zircon, apatite and rutile), showed that its composition matches that of northeast Scotland, probably the Orcadian Basin, more than 700 kilometres away. The Altar Stone would have travelled, perhaps by sea along the coast, from the far north of Britain to Wiltshire. The finding, as well as being astonishing, suggests that in the Neolithic there were networks of contact and transport across the whole island, far broader than previously thought.
If one fact reveals the intention of Stonehenge's builders, it is its astronomical orientation. The monument's main axis is precisely aligned with the sun at the two key moments of the year: it points towards sunrise at the summer solstice (the longest day) and, in the opposite direction, towards sunset at the winter solstice (the shortest day). That axis runs through the Avenue, the ceremonial route that connected Stonehenge with the River Avon, and past the Heel Stone, the great solitary stone outside the circle. There is no doubt that the solar cycle was central to the meaning of the place: watching the sky and the passing of the seasons was at the heart of the life and beliefs of these farming peoples.
This has fed the old idea of Stonehenge as an 'astronomical observatory'. It is true that it marks the solstices, and perhaps other phenomena too, but current science is cautious: it was probably far more a temple or a place of ceremonies linked to the sun than a precision instrument for predicting eclipses, as some twentieth-century theories proposed that are now disputed. The functions are not mutually exclusive: the same site could have been a cemetery, a sanctuary, a gathering place and a ritual calendar all at once.
And who were those people? The great neighbouring sites have given valuable clues. At Durrington Walls, some 3 kilometres away, excavations (especially those of the Stonehenge Riverside Project led by Mike Parker Pearson) revealed an enormous Neolithic settlement with dozens of houses and the remains of great feasts: many of the builders lived there, at least seasonally, perhaps gathering for the solstice celebrations. Neighbouring Woodhenge, a monument of timber post rings also aligned with the sun, suggests to some researchers a symbolic contrast between wood (associated with the living) and stone (associated with the ancestors and the dead), joined by the River Avon. Analysis of the bones and teeth of those buried shows that people came to Stonehenge from very distant places, even from western Britain, reinforcing its role as a great pilgrimage centre for the whole island.
What was Stonehenge for? The question is still open, and that is precisely why the place fascinates. Many answers have been proposed over time, some more solid than others. Today archaeologists tend to combine several: Stonehenge was a cemetery and a place of ancestor worship; a sanctuary linked to the sun and the seasonal cycles; a meeting and pilgrimage point that drew communities from all over Britain; and, according to a hypothesis widely publicised by professors Timothy Darvill and Geoffrey Wainwright, perhaps also a place of healing, visited in search of a cure because of the supposed properties of the bluestones, given the unusual number of remains with signs of illness found in the area. None of these ideas rules out the others.
It is worth clearing up a very widespread misunderstanding: the druids did not build Stonehenge and had no connection with it originally. The druids were the priests of the Iron Age Celtic cultures, documented by classical authors such as Julius Caesar, and they flourished thousands of years after Stonehenge was built; by the time they existed, the monument was already extremely ancient. The association between druids and Stonehenge is a romantic invention of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when antiquarians such as John Aubrey and William Stukeley attributed the monument to the druids. From that came the modern 'druid' orders that hold rituals at the site today: a recent and respectable tradition, but with no historical link to its true builders.
In modern times, Stonehenge passed through private hands until it was given to the nation in 1918. Today it is run by English Heritage, and it receives more than a million visitors a year from all over the world, which has meant protecting the monument (you can no longer walk freely among the stones, except on special visits or at the managed-access solstices) and rethinking its setting, with heated debates about the traffic on the A303 road that runs beside it. Twice a year, at the summer and winter solstices, tens of thousands of people — tourists, the curious, pagans and modern druids — gather at dawn to watch the sun line up with the stones, just as, in a different way, the men and women who built it did five thousand years ago. That gesture, repeated across the millennia, is perhaps the most moving thing about Stonehenge: a place that still calls humanity to look at the sky.
