Few cities pack so much history, learning and beauty into so few streets as Cambridge. On the banks of the quiet River Cam, this university city gathers more than eight centuries of scholarship into a historic centre where every corner looks like a stage set: breathtaking Gothic chapels, medieval cloisters, centuries-old libraries and green meadows sloping down to the water. Minds that changed the world studied and taught here, from Isaac Newton to Charles Darwin, from Stephen Hawking to the people who worked out the structure of DNA.

Cambridge grew up around a strategic point: a ford over the River Cam (hence the name, 'the bridge over the Cam'). There was a settlement here from prehistoric times and, above all, a Roman fort controlling the river crossing. The Romans named it in relation to the River Granta; the Anglo-Saxons knew it as Grantebrycge, and from that, over time, came 'Cambridge'. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, William the Conqueror built a castle and the town grew as a river trading centre. The great leap came in 1209, when a group of scholars who had fled unrest in Oxford settled in Cambridge and founded what would become the University of Cambridge, the second oldest English-speaking university in the world. Over the following centuries the colleges were founded: Peterhouse, the oldest, in 1284, and then dozens more, among them King's College (1441), created by King Henry VI, whose chapel is a masterpiece of English Perpendicular Gothic. Cambridge became one of the great centres of European learning and played a part in key chapters of history: the English Reformation, the scientific revolution — with Isaac Newton at Trinity College in the seventeenth century — and later Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and, in the twentieth century, discoveries such as the structure of DNA by Watson and Crick (1953) and the work of physicists and mathematicians at the Cavendish Laboratory. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
The origin of Cambridge is, as its name suggests, tied to a bridge over a river. In Roman times there was a fortified settlement on the hill where the Castle Hill district now stands, north of the River Cam, then known as the Granta. The Romans made use of the river crossing to lay a road connecting Londinium (London) with the north of Britain, and the checkpoint over the ford gave rise to a small urban core.
After the Roman withdrawal, the place was occupied in turn by Angles and Saxons. The Anglo-Saxons called the settlement 'Grantebrycge' ('the bridge over the Granta'), a name that over the centuries and successive invasions — including the Danish one, which left its mark on the area — drifted phonetically until it became 'Cambridge', with the river itself renamed the Cam. The town appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, the great survey William the Conqueror ordered after the Norman Conquest, as a borough of some commercial importance, thanks to its position at the crossing of river and land routes in East Anglia.
The Normans left their own mark: around 1068 a motte-and-bailey castle was built on Castle Hill, of which only the earth mound remains today, and several churches were built or rebuilt, among them the unusual Round Church (Church of the Holy Sepulchre), circular in plan, put up around 1130 in imitation of the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. By the beginning of the twelfth century Cambridge was already a prosperous commercial and river town in the Fens region, but its true historical destiny was still to come.
The founding episode of the University of Cambridge has an origin as specific as it is dramatic. In 1209, in Oxford — which had had an established academic community since the twelfth century — a group of students became caught up in the death of a local woman, which unleashed the fury of the townspeople and led the authorities to hang two or three accused students, even though jurisdiction over them should have belonged to the Church. In protest, and fearing for their safety, a considerable number of masters and students left Oxford.
Part of that group settled in Cambridge, a town that already had some tradition of church teaching but no formal university. Around these migrant scholars there grew up, over the following decades, a community of study (a 'studium generale') that gained royal recognition: in 1231 King Henry III granted it privileges, and in 1233 Pope Gregory IX confirmed its status. So was born the University of Cambridge, the second oldest in the English-speaking world after Oxford, and one of the oldest in Europe still operating.
As in Oxford, the model that took hold was that of the colleges: autonomous residential communities where masters and students lived, ate and studied together. The first was Peterhouse, founded in 1284 by Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely. Many others followed through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries: Clare, Pembroke, Gonville, Trinity Hall, Corpus Christi... each with its own endowment, chapel, library and traditions, a system that still structures academic life in Cambridge today.
The fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were a golden age for the founding of colleges in Cambridge, coinciding with the rise of the Tudor dynasty. In 1441, the young King Henry VI founded King's College, conceived as the natural destination for pupils of his other great foundation, Eton College, near Windsor. The building of its chapel — today the city's most recognisable symbol — dragged on for almost a century, interrupted by the Wars of the Roses, until it was completed around 1515 under the patronage of Henry VII and Henry VIII, leaving as its legacy the largest fan vault in the world.
In 1546, Henry VIII merged two existing colleges (Michaelhouse and King's Hall) to create Trinity College, which would become the largest and richest in Cambridge. It was also the period in which the town was shaken by the Protestant Reformation: Cambridge dons and students, meeting informally at the White Horse Inn (nicknamed 'Little Germany' for its sympathy with Lutheran ideas), debated the new religious ideas arriving from the continent. Among them was Thomas Cranmer, who would become Archbishop of Canterbury and architect of the Anglican Reformation, and who decades later would be burned at the stake in Oxford during the Catholic reign of Mary I.
The university was also the setting for intense theological debates and for the persecution of dissenters in both directions, as the monarchs changed: Protestants under Edward VI, Catholics under Mary I, Protestants again under Elizabeth I. Despite the turbulence, Cambridge consolidated in this period its prestige as one of the great training grounds for England's church, political and intellectual elite.
No name is as closely associated with Cambridge science as that of Isaac Newton. He entered Trinity College in 1661 and, although his great creative period (the 'annus mirabilis' of 1665-1666, when he developed key ideas on calculus, optics and gravitation) took place in his native Lincolnshire because the university had closed due to plague, it was in Cambridge that he matured and, as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, published his crowning work, the 'Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica' (1687), which laid the foundations of classical physics. The legend of the apple tree said to have inspired the law of gravity is linked to the garden of his family home, though a descendant apple tree is kept symbolically beside the entrance to Trinity College.
In the nineteenth century, Cambridge trained another of the scientists who most transformed modern thought: Charles Darwin, who studied at Christ's College between 1828 and 1831 with the initial intention of being ordained as an Anglican clergyman. It was his Cambridge mentor, the professor of botany John Stevens Henslow — later the driving force behind the university's Botanic Garden — who recommended him for the historic voyage of HMS Beagle, the expedition that would provide the central evidence for his theory of evolution by natural selection, published in 1859 in 'On the Origin of Species'.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the founding of the Cavendish Laboratory of physics (1874), under the direction of James Clerk Maxwell, established Cambridge as one of the great centres of scientific research in the world. Its lecture rooms and laboratories would see figures such as J. J. Thomson (discoverer of the electron), Ernest Rutherford (father of nuclear physics) and, in the twentieth century, dozens of Nobel laureates, cementing a scientific tradition that Cambridge keeps up to this day.
The twentieth century confirmed Cambridge as one of the scientific epicentres of the planet. The most famous episode happened on 28 February 1953, when James Watson and Francis Crick, working at the Cavendish Laboratory, announced in The Eagle pub — according to local tradition, bursting in with the line 'we have discovered the secret of life' — that they had determined the double helix structure of DNA, one of the most far-reaching findings in modern biology, built on the X-ray diffraction data obtained by Rosalind Franklin in London. Cambridge was also the setting for the work of Alan Turing, who studied and later became a fellow of King's College, laying the theoretical foundations of modern computing before the Second World War.
In the last decades of the twentieth century, Cambridge added to its academic prestige a thriving technological and business dimension. From the 1970s and 1980s, the combination of university talent, funding and infrastructure gave rise to what is known as the 'Cambridge Cluster' or 'Silicon Fen' (a play on Silicon Valley and the Fens, the marshland of the region): a dense ecosystem of technology, biotechnology and research companies — from startups to giants such as ARM Holdings, whose processors run a large share of the world's mobile phones — that turned the region into one of the most important innovation hubs in Europe.
Today Cambridge combines seamlessly that thousand-year past of monastic and medieval learning with a present of cutting-edge research in biomedicine, artificial intelligence and technology. The city remains, above all, a place where the academic rigour of its 31 colleges, the student bustle of its cobbled streets and the constant hum of new ideas that, as in the days of Newton and Darwin, seek to change our understanding of the world all live side by side.
