Nevado Pastoruri is one of the few glaciers in the Cordillera Blanca you can walk up to without mountaineering gear, which for decades made it one of the most popular outings from Huaraz. It sits in the southern sector of Huascarán National Park, above 5,000 meters, and lets you touch the ice, see caves and glacier walls and, back in the day, even ski and snowboard on the snow.
Today Pastoruri is also a symbol of climate change. The glacier has retreated drastically over the past decades and snow sports here are a thing of the past. So the authorities recast the destination as the 'Ruta del Cambio Climático' (Climate Change Route), a walk designed so visitors see first-hand what global warming is doing to tropical glaciers.

For much of the twentieth century, Nevado Pastoruri was the most visited and best loved glacier in the Cordillera Blanca. What made it unique among the ice giants of Huascarán National Park was this: although it stands above 5,000 meters, you could reach its base on a short walk, with no ropes, crampons or mountaineering experience. That accessibility made it the ideal destination for anyone who wanted to touch the ice of a tropical glacier without being a climber.
In its best years Pastoruri even worked as a small snow-sports resort. People skied and snowboarded on its frozen slopes, and many Peruvian mountaineers took their first steps there learning Andean climbing and ice technique. The glacier drew families, school groups and tourists from everywhere, and became one of the icons of adventure tourism in Áncash and a recurring image of the Cordillera Blanca.
The nearby stands of puya Raimondi at Pumapampa and the sparkling mineral water springs rounded out a trip that combined glacier, endemic flora and geological curiosities. Pastoruri was, in short, the most popular and accessible face of a park that in its higher reaches demands high-mountain technique and stamina.
From the end of the twentieth century, the Pastoruri glacier began retreating at an alarming rate. Measurements showed an accelerating loss of ice mass, part of a general phenomenon affecting the tropical glaciers of the Andes, which are especially vulnerable to rising global temperatures. The glacier fragmented, its front pulled back and the surface of firm snow shrank year after year, until skiing and snowboarding became impossible.
Faced with that decline, the authorities of Huascarán National Park and SERNANP made an unusual, teaching-minded decision: instead of closing the destination or glossing over the problem, they recast it as the 'Ruta del Cambio Climático' (Climate Change Route). The trail was fitted with interpretive panels and photographs showing how far the ice reached in earlier decades, so visitors can see with their own eyes how much the glacier has shrunk and understand the causes and consequences of global warming.
Pastoruri thus became a rare case of a tourist attraction conceived as a warning. Anyone who climbs to its base today isn't only looking at a tropical glacier: they're getting a live lesson on the fragility of the Andes' fresh water reserves, which millions of people depend on. The destination keeps its beauty, but now it also speaks of the uncertain future of Peru's frozen mountains.
Nevado Pastoruri is part of Huascarán National Park, created in 1975 to protect the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range in the world. The park shelters dozens of peaks above 5,000 and 6,000 meters, hundreds of turquoise glacial lakes and unique high-altitude ecosystems, among them the queñua (Polylepis) woodlands and the stands of puya Raimondi, the plant with the largest inflorescence on the planet, which grows precisely in the southern sector of the park, on the road to Pastoruri.
The ecological and scenic importance of the area earned it international recognition: in 1977 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve and in 1985 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park holds emblematic Andean wildlife such as the Andean condor, the vicuña, the taruca and the spectacled bear, and it is one of the country's main water reserves, since meltwater from its glaciers feeds rivers that agriculture and the cities of the coast and the highlands depend on.
The park is run by SERNANP, which regulates access, charges the entry ticket and promotes responsible tourism. In Pastoruri's case that management includes recasting the destination in environmental terms and handling a heavy flow of visitors in a fragile setting. Staying on the trails, leaving no waste and respecting the plants and wildlife are the conditions for this sector of the park to stay open for future generations.
The story of Pastoruri doesn't end at its glacier: the road that leads there, through the southern sector of Huascarán National Park, crosses one of the most singular botanical landscapes on the planet. In the Pumapampa area grow the stands of puya Raimondi (Puya raimondii), the plant with the largest inflorescence in the world. Described for science by the Italian naturalist Antonio Raimondi in the nineteenth century -hence the name-, this giant bromeliad lives several decades storing energy in a rosette of spiny leaves and then, once in its life, shoots up a colossal flower stalk that can top ten meters and carry thousands of flowers, only to die soon after blooming.
That extraordinary cycle turns every flowering into an event: seeing one in bloom is a matter of luck and season, but even without flowers the puya stands, silhouetted against the puna and the snow peaks, are an unforgettable sight. Along with the puyas, the route passes the sparkling mineral water springs of Pumapampa, where the water bubbles up with carbon dioxide rising from underground, and the broad Pachacoto valley, carpeted in ichu and roamed by herds of alpacas and llamas.
This combination of accessible glacier, unique endemic flora and geological curiosities explains why Pastoruri became the star excursion out of Huaraz, and why, even with the glacier in retreat, it's still one of the most complete outings in the Cordillera Blanca: in a single day you go from the puna to the ice, with lessons in biology, geology and climate change along the way.
The decline of Pastoruri isn't the subjective impression of people who visited decades ago: it's documented with scientific precision. According to studies by the Instituto Nacional de Investigación en Glaciares y Ecosistemas de Montaña (INAIGEM), between 1995 and 2016 the glacier lost around 60% of its mass, and its front has pulled back some 651 meters over recent decades. Field research recorded retreats of up to three or four meters in a single month in certain seasons, a rate of loss that surprised even the glaciologists themselves.
This case isn't isolated: it's part of a phenomenon affecting the whole Cordillera Blanca and Peru's tropical glaciers in general. According to INAIGEM's study 'Las Cordilleras Glaciares del Perú', between 1962 and 2016 the country lost 1,284 km² of glacier surface, more than half (53.56%) of the ice cover it had in the mid-twentieth century, with a recent retreat rate of about 4.97 km² a year across the Peruvian ranges.
A less known side effect of the retreat is the appearance of 'acid waters': as the ice that once covered certain rocks melts, minerals are exposed that react with water and oxygen to produce acid drainage, altering the water quality of the streams near Pastoruri, a phenomenon INAIGEM scientists are actively studying. These figures are the technical basis on which the 'Ruta del Cambio Climático' was built: it isn't a tourist metaphor, but the plain-language translation of real measurements on one of the best monitored glaciers in the country.
