Picture a channel so precise that, a thousand years before Rome existed, it was already forcing water to turn at right angles and slow down on tight curves so as not to break the stone. That is the Cumbemayo aqueduct, the site's great jewel: a work of hydraulic engineering cut directly into the rock that specialists date to around 1500-1000 BC, that is, some three thousand years ago. That makes it one of the oldest structures of its kind in all the Americas, built by cultures of the Formative period, long before the Incas emerged. The channel runs for several kilometers across the Cajamarca plateau, at around 3,500 meters.
What amazes engineers and archaeologists is the sophistication of its layout. The channel, with a cross-section carefully carved into the stone, does not follow a straight line: it traces zigzags, right angles and calculated changes of gradient to control the speed of the water and reduce erosion, showing a deep grasp of hydraulics. The aqueduct is thought to have collected rainwater and spring water from the plateau and carried it, possibly diverting it between basins, toward farmland or settlements in the valleys.
The existence of a work this precise and this old reveals how far the Andean societies of the Formative period had developed in the Cajamarca region, partly contemporary with the Chavín culture. Today the Cumbemayo complex —with its millennia-old aqueduct, its stone forest and its shrines— is one of the main attractions around Cajamarca, alongside the Ventanillas de Otuzco, the Baños del Inca and the Granja Porcón. Its conservation and study make it possible to keep unpicking the knowledge of early Andean societies, authors of one of the oldest and most surprising waterworks on the continent.
Although Cumbemayo was always known and walked by the local people of Cajamarca —the aqueduct was never truly 'lost'— its systematic archaeological study is relatively recent. Peruvian researchers began documenting and dating the channel and the rock shrine in the mid-twentieth century, applying modern archaeological methods to establish its age and debate its function, at a time when the pre-Hispanic heritage of Peru's northern highlands was only starting to be valued beyond the great Inca sites.
On the back of that research, Cumbemayo was declared cultural heritage and an archaeological protection zone, and over recent decades the Peruvian state, through bodies such as the Ministry of Culture and the regional authorities of Cajamarca, has driven signage, trail and protection works to make it accessible to tourism without compromising its conservation. Recent projects have sought to improve the complex's interpretation infrastructure, with marked trails and information panels.
Today Cumbemayo is one of the main tourist attractions of the Cajamarca region, and its study continues: archaeologists and engineers are still debating details of exactly how the channel was built and how it relates to other pre-Inca sites in the northern highlands, a field of research that still has open questions about one of the most remarkable waterworks in pre-Columbian America.
