📌What it is
Chomoni Beach is one of the most beautiful and photogenic beaches on Grande Comore, on the island's east coast, about 16 km from Moroni. It is a cove of pale sand framed by large black basalt rocks and coconut palms, with turquoise water and a few natural pools formed by the lava. The contrast between the pale sand, the dark volcanic rock and the blue sea has made it a classic postcard of the archipelago.
📌Location
It lies on the east coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja), in the Bambao district, about 16-20 km northeast of the capital, Moroni. You reach it along the east coast road. Being fairly close to Moroni and the airport makes it easy to visit on a half-day trip, and it pairs well with other beaches and with Lac Salé in the north of the island.
📌Best time to go
The best season to enjoy Chomoni is the cool dry season, from May to October, with less rain, calmer seas and good visibility. The wet season (November-April) brings heat, storms and sometimes rough seas. Whatever the time of year, it's best to go when the tide and sea conditions are favourable, as there are currents along some stretches; sunny middays bring out the colour of the water.
📌Getting there
There is no regular public transport to the beach; the usual options are a hired car with driver, a taxi at an agreed price or an organised trip from Moroni. The drive takes about 30-45 minutes. It's a good idea to arrange for the driver to wait, since there are no taxis at the beach. Many travellers combine Chomoni with Lac Salé and the northern beaches on the same outing.
📌Facilities
Chomoni is a fairly natural, quiet beach with basic infrastructure: there is usually a café or simple eatery and toilets, but it is not a developed resort beach. There are no sunshades for hire and no big tourist services. Bring water, food, sun protection and some cash (Comorian francs). As this is a conservative Muslim country, modest swimwear and clothing are recommended, especially outside hotels.
📌Language and currency
Comorian (Shikomori), French and Arabic are spoken. The currency is the Comorian franc (KMF), pegged to the euro (1 EUR = 491,96775 KMF); the US dollar is around 450 KMF (July 2026). At the beach and in nearby villages almost everything is paid in cash, so bring francs or euros in small notes for meals, drinks and transport.

Chomoni Beach is the image many travellers take home from the Comoros: a cove of pale sand, dotted with huge boulders of polished black lava and lined with coconut palms, with turquoise water forming small natural pools among the basalt. Set on the east coast of Grande Comore, less than half an hour from Moroni, it is one of the most photogenic and least crowded beaches in the archipelago, a place where the volcanic landscape meets the Indian Ocean.
What sets Chomoni apart is exactly that contrast: pale sand and light coral next to dark volcanic rock and a sea in shades of turquoise and deep blue. It isn't a tourist resort with rows of sunshades, but a natural, quiet beach, ideal for spending the day, swimming in its pools, taking photos among the rocks and enjoying the calm of an island that barely sees mass tourism.
This practical guide explains how to get to Chomoni from Moroni, what facilities to expect (few, so come prepared), when it's best to go and which other sights on the island to combine it with. It's a perfect stop to add a day of beach and nature to a trip around Grande Comore, alongside the climb up Karthala, a visit to Moroni and a tour of the island's volcanic north.
📖 History of Chomoni Beach
Chomoni is a natural beach on the east coast of Grande Comore, shaped by the interplay between the lava flows of the island's volcanism and the sea, which carved coves of pale sand out of the black basalt. With no large tourist developments, it is part of the coastline of the villages of the Bambao region, on an island whose landscape and culture are explained in the history of Moroni and of Karthala volcano. Its volcanic geology is covered in detail on our history page.

📖 History of Chomoni Beach
Origins, formation and what the sources say.
A beach shaped by the volcano and the sea
Like almost everything on Grande Comore, Chomoni Beach is a child of volcanic activity. The island was built up by successive eruptions that raised the La Grille massif in the north and the Karthala massif in the south from the ocean floor. On the east coast, flows of basaltic lava reached the sea and hardened into a shoreline of black rock. Over time, the waves piled pale sand and crushed coral into small coves along it.
That is how Chomoni came to be: a cove where pale sand mixes with large blocks of polished basalt and with natural pools the lava left behind as it cooled. This contrast between dark volcanic rock, light sand and turquoise water is typical of the Comorian coast, and it is especially striking on the island's eastern side. On the north coast, near Mitsamiouli, the same process creates beaches with an almost black sheen and coral coves.
So geology explains Chomoni's beauty. This is a young, changing landscape, still shaped by the forces that created the archipelago. Every lava rock is a piece of the eruptions that formed the island, and the beach is a delicate balance between the fire that built the coast and the sea that carves it day after day.
The east coast and the villages of Bambao
Chomoni lies on the east coast of Grande Comore, in the historic region of Bambao. The region gave its name to one of the island's old sultanates. Before unification and the colonial period, Grande Comore was split into several rival sultanates, and Bambao was one of the most important, centred on the Iconi area to the south. The villages on this coast lived from farming, fishing and seaborne trade across the Indian Ocean.
Like the rest of the archipelago, this coast was part of Swahili civilisation and of the Islamic world of the western Indian Ocean. Dhows linked it with Zanzibar, the East African coast and the Arab world. The villages of the region still have their mosques, their traditions and a rural, fishing way of life that has barely changed and has stayed outside tourism.
Today the east coast is a quiet, little-developed area, where beaches like Chomoni sit alongside small fishing villages and plantations of coconut palms, bananas and spices. Because there are no large resorts, the coast has kept its natural character, and this strip of shoreline is one of the most peaceful and authentic corners of Grande Comore.
Chomoni today: nature without the crowds
For today's traveller, Chomoni is one of the most recommended beaches in the Comoros, precisely because of its natural beauty and its calm. The archipelago gets very few tourists each year, so you can enjoy beaches like this one almost alone, without the infrastructure or the bustle of busier Indian Ocean destinations. It's a place to spend the day, swim in the lava pools, take photos and rest under the coconut palms.
It's less than half an hour by car from Moroni, which makes it the easiest beach trip from the capital. It also fits perfectly into an itinerary that includes climbing Karthala, visiting the city and touring the volcanic north with Lac Salé. Many Comorians from the capital also head there at weekends to spend the day with their families.
The challenge here, as in the rest of the country, is to protect this natural heritage from litter and haphazard development. At the same time, it can draw respectful tourism that brings income to local communities. The Comoros has gained recent international attention with the inscription of its medinas on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026, and beaches like Chomoni could become better known as a result. For now, they remain a well-kept tropical secret of the Indian Ocean.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to swim at Chomoni?+
Yes, it's a very good beach for swimming, especially in its natural lava pools, where the water is calmer and clearer. Even so, along some stretches and at certain tides there can be currents or rocks, so go in carefully, check sea conditions locally and swim in the sheltered areas. There are no lifeguards.
Are there facilities at the beach?+
Facilities are basic. There is usually a café or simple eatery and toilets, but it isn't a resort beach with sunshades, loungers or shops for hire. Bring water, food, sun protection, a hat and some cash in Comorian francs. That's part of Chomoni's charm: a natural, quiet beach, not a crowded resort.
How should I dress for the beach in the Comoros?+
The Comoros is a conservative Muslim country. On public beaches like Chomoni, modest swimwear and clothing are advisable, avoiding very small bikinis outside hotel beaches; for men, board shorts. Resort private beaches are more relaxed. Dressing respectfully makes it easier to get along with local people and is a much-appreciated sign of consideration.
What can I combine a visit to Chomoni with?+
Chomoni pairs very well with Lac Salé and the northern beaches (Mitsamiouli, Trou du Prophète) on a full-day trip along the east and north coasts of Grande Comore. It also works as a rest day after climbing Karthala or visiting Moroni. Being half an hour from the capital, it's easy to fit into any itinerary around the island.
When is the best time to go?+
The cool dry season, from May to October, is best: less rain, calmer seas and good visibility. The wet season (November-April) brings heat, storms and sometimes rough seas, with a risk of cyclones between December and March. In the dry season, sunny middays bring out the turquoise of the water and its contrast with the black lava.
