The Bay of Fundy is one of Canada's great natural phenomena: the bay with the highest tides in the world. Twice a day, billions of tons of water flow in and out of this great Atlantic inlet separating New Brunswick from Nova Scotia, with a change in level that at its deepest end tops 16 meters, the height of a several-story building. For thousands of years the Bay of Fundy was the territory of the Mi'kmaq people, who lived off fishing and the resources of this coast of extreme tides and wove it into their mythology (one legend attributes the tides to a great whale or to the hero Glooscap). The name 'Fundy' probably derives from the Portuguese 'fundo' ('deep') or from French, going back to the explorations of the 16th and 17th centuries. The French founded on its shores some of the first European settlements in North America north of Florida: Port-Royal, in present-day Nova Scotia, in 1605, the core of the colony of Acadia. Through the 17th and 18th centuries the region was the stage for the rivalry between France and England, for the tragic Deportation of the Acadians (1755) and for the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists after American independence. The tidal phenomenon, known and feared by sailors and fishers, was studied scientifically over time, and it was confirmed that Fundy has the highest tides in the world, the result of its funnel shape combined with a resonance effect with the natural tidal cycle, which is close to the bay's own oscillation period. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
Long before the Europeans arrived, the shores of the Bay of Fundy were inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people (and, in neighboring areas, by the Maliseet/Wolastoqiyik), Indigenous nations of northeastern North America. They lived off fishing, hunting, gathering shellfish and the resources of a coast marked by extraordinary tides, which they knew perfectly and which governed their movements by canoe and their gathering of food on the seabed the sea uncovered twice a day.
A phenomenon as colossal as the Fundy tides could not fail to have its explanation in oral tradition. A well-known Mi'kmaq legend attributes the giant tides to an enormous whale that, splashing in the bay, made the water rise and fall; other versions tie them to Glooscap, the great culture hero of Mi'kmaq mythology, whose deeds are said to have shaped the region's landscape (including the islands and formations of the bay). These stories show how Indigenous peoples wove into their worldview a natural phenomenon that still astonishes science today.
Indigenous presence is the deepest layer of Fundy's history, and the region remains the traditional territory of these nations, whose thousand-year relationship with the bay and its tides precedes any European settlement by millennia.
The origin of the name 'Fundy' is not entirely certain and has given rise to several hypotheses. The most widely accepted links it to the Portuguese word 'fundo' ('deep' or 'bottom'), which Portuguese navigators of the 15th and 16th centuries are said to have applied to this deep bay during their explorations of the northwest Atlantic. Another hypothesis ties it to the French 'fendu' ('cleft', 'split'), for the way the bay seems to cleave the land. Either way, the place name was fixed by the use of European sailors and mapmakers.
The first documented European explorations of the area intensified in the early 17th century with the arrival of the French. In 1604, an expedition led by Pierre Dugua de Mons, on which the celebrated cartographer and explorer Samuel de Champlain took part, traveled and mapped the bay. Champlain was the one who left some of the first detailed records of the region, including observations of its extraordinary tides, a phenomenon that surely struck those navigators used to the far more modest tides of Europe.
Those explorations opened the way to the first great European chapter at Fundy: the founding of Acadia, one of France's earliest colonies in North America, which would have the bay as one of its central settings.
The Bay of Fundy was the setting for one of the first permanent European settlements in North America north of Florida. In 1605 the French founded Port-Royal, in present-day Nova Scotia, on the Annapolis Basin, which flows into Fundy. Port-Royal became the core of Acadia, the French colony that covered much of today's Maritime provinces. That is where the Acadian community was born, descended from French settlers who developed a culture of their own and a remarkable farming technique: they built dykes (aboiteaux) to win the fertile Fundy marshes from the sea, turning land flooded by the tides into cropland.
Through the 17th century and the first half of the 18th, the region was the object of a constant dispute between France and England, which seized it from each other again and again in successive wars. Acadia changed hands several times until it passed definitively to British control. The Acadian population, largely French-speaking and Catholic, was left under British sovereignty in an age of imperial tension.
The most tragic episode came in 1755, with the Grand Dérangement, or Deportation of the Acadians. Faced with many Acadians' refusal to swear unconditional loyalty to the British Crown, and in the context of the conflict with France, the British authorities ordered their mass expulsion: thousands of Acadians were torn from their lands around Fundy, their villages and dykes were destroyed, and they were deported and scattered across the British colonies, Europe and, finally, Louisiana (where their descendants are the 'Cajuns'). The historic site of Grand-Pré, today a World Heritage Site, commemorates that tragedy on the shore of the bay.
What was for centuries an astonishing and sometimes fearsome phenomenon for sailors, fishers and Indigenous peoples, modern science explained precisely: the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides on the planet, with differences between high and low water that at its deepest end (the Minas Basin, in Nova Scotia) top 16 meters. Twice a day colossal amounts of water flow in and out of the bay —on the order of hundreds of billions of tons— more than the combined flow of all the freshwater rivers in the world.
The explanation combines two factors. The first is the shape of the bay: Fundy narrows and gets shallower toward its head, like a funnel, which forces the same incoming mass of water to 'pile up' and rise higher and higher as it advances. The second, and decisive one, is a resonance phenomenon: the natural time it takes the water to swing from one end of the bay to the other (its 'rocking period') is very close to the period of the Atlantic's semidiurnal tide, about twelve and a half hours. When the two rhythms nearly coincide, each tide reinforces the next, just as pushing a swing at exactly the right moment makes it go higher and higher. That resonance amplifies the tides to Fundy's record values.
This colossal power does not just create a spectacle: it sculpts rock formations like those at Hopewell, exposes the Joggins fossil cliffs, generates the reversing rapids of Saint John and the tidal bore of the Petitcodiac, and has fed projects to harness the bay's tidal energy.
The history of the Bay of Fundy is measured not only in centuries but in hundreds of millions of years. On the Nova Scotia coast, the world's highest tides erode the Joggins cliffs relentlessly, laying bare one of the most complete and famous sections of Carboniferous rock on the planet. These rocks are about 300 million years old and preserve, like the pages of a book of stone, the record of a lost world: the swamp forests of what is called the 'Coal Age', when this part of the planet was covered in tropical forests that would in time give rise to coal.
The Joggins fossils are extraordinary. Fossilized trunks of giant trees (lycopsids such as Sigillaria) are preserved there upright, just as they grew, and inside some of those hollow trunks the remains of some of the earliest known reptiles were found, animals that marked a milestone in the evolution of land life. Ferns, arthropods and the traces of those ancient ecosystems also turn up.
The site was key to 19th-century science. Pioneering geologists such as Charles Lyell and William Dawson studied it, and the Joggins finds influenced the thinking of the day: Charles Darwin himself cited these fossils in 'On the Origin of Species'. For their exceptional scientific value, the Joggins Fossil Cliffs were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008. Together with its status as a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve, the region's protected areas confirm that the Bay of Fundy is both a natural and a scientific treasure.
Through the 20th century and up to today, the Bay of Fundy went from a territory of fishing, maritime trade and colonial disputes to one of Canada's great nature destinations, with conservation at the fore. In 1948 Fundy National Park was created, on the New Brunswick coast, to protect a stretch of coast with extreme tides and Acadian forest, and to put its landscapes within reach of visitors. Over time other protected areas and sites of interest were added on both sides of the bay.
The region has been recognized internationally for its natural value: besides the World Heritage listing of Joggins, the Minas Basin area and the Fundy area were included in UNESCO biosphere reserve programs, and Fundy's tides and geology regularly figure among the country's most cited natural wonders. Whale watching, drawn by the richness of these waters, took hold as a star activity, with particular attention to the conservation of the deeply endangered North Atlantic right whale.
The bay has also been the object of projects to harness the energy of its tides (tidal power), although their development has been complex given the technical and environmental challenges of such a powerful setting. Today the Bay of Fundy combines its Mi'kmaq heritage, its Acadian and colonial past, its paleontological treasure and its spectacular nature in a destination where the true protagonist is still the same as ever: the tireless rhythm of the highest tides in the world, which twice a day rewrite the landscape.
