The Embassy of Ireland in Chile confirmed that on 30 September, from 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning Chile time, the second round of the year opens. There are 100 places, and you enter by sending ONE single e-mail to irishwhchile@vfsglobal.com within that hour. Sending more than one, sending it outside the window, or writing in a rude tone disqualifies you.

Working Holiday Ireland: the guide →Viajar a Ireland →

The date was confirmed by the embassy itself on its official Instagram account, @irlembchile: "On 30 September, from 9:00 to 10:00 (Chile), a new round of the Working Holiday Ireland programme opens". It does not appear on its website because the dates of each round are announced through that channel.

Ireland has a Working Holiday agreement with Chile that allows 200 young Chileans per year to spend up to twelve months in the country, working to supplement their stay. The 200 places are split into two rounds of 100, one in each half of the year.

The mechanism is not a form or a website: it is an e-mail, and it only counts if it arrives within a one-hour window.

How to apply, exactly

You have to send ONE single e-mail saying you are interested in taking part in the programme, between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning Chile time, to irishwhchile@vfsglobal.com, on the date the embassy announces.

Those selected receive an appointment to submit the application. You are not allowed to send someone else to that appointment in your place.

The embassy also states that phone or in-person enquiries about this programme are not answered.

The requirements

Be a Chilean citizen with a valid Chilean passport and usually live in Chile. You may be asked for a PDI travel record, a rental contract, an employment contract or a service invoice as proof of residence.

Be between 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, at the time of applying. Have no criminal record.

Funds: 1,500 euros if you have the return ticket already bought, or 3,000 euros if you don't. You may be asked for proof again when you enter Ireland.

Insurance with four types of cover: civil liability, medical, accident, with hospitalisation and repatriation, valid for the entire stay. A standard travel insurance policy usually does not include civil liability.

You cannot travel accompanied by dependent family members, unless they have their own visa.

What disqualifies you

Sending more than one e-mail: the embassy expressly asks for one per person.

Sending it outside the 9:00 to 10:00 window.

Sending someone else to the appointment.

And something that is often overlooked: the embassy warns, in these words, that abusive messages or calls are grounds for disqualification.

A doubt we prefer to leave open

The embassy writes that "the 100 e-mails received in each process" get an appointment, and that phrase can be read two ways: either the first 100 to arrive, or 100 chosen from everything received in that hour.

We did not find a clarification on its website that settles the question, and we are not going to make one up. Until there is one, the prudent thing is to send it as soon as the window opens: if it's first come, first served, that works in your favour, and if it's a draw, it doesn't hurt you.

The exact date of each round is announced by the embassy in its news section and on its official Instagram account.

🛡️ Getting sick far from home shouldn't cost you thousands of USD

Abroad, getting sick is more than a bad day. In many destinations public healthcare depends on appointments, queues and availability, and private care is paid upfront. An emergency can cost thousands of USD, right when you are far from home and on a tight budget. That is why I recommend you never leave without travel assistance.

I recommend GO! Assistance because it covers what matters: medical care, emergencies, medication and hospitalization depending on the plan. It protects you 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world, with real-time solutions on the ground. GO! 365 ECO and GO! 365 give you USD 45,000 of global coverage: the first with a USD 100 deductible, the second with none.

If you quote from Argentina, in October GO! also offers 12 interest-free instalments on selected products.
