Step by step

South Korea's K-ETA: the 10.000 won, the 72 hours, the exemption that expires on 31 December 2026 and the Q-CODE, which is a separate procedure

The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is the electronic authorisation that South Korea requires, BEFORE BOARDING, from anyone entering without a visa. It is issued by the Ministry of Justice and the only place to apply is www.k-eta.go.kr or the official «K-ETA» app. The portal itself spells out what it is NOT, in these words: «K-ETA is NOT a visa and only fulfills some of the requirements for entering the Republic of Korea without a visa. Please note that an approved K-ETA does not guarantee entry into the Republic of Korea. The final decision will be made by a Korea Immigration Service officer at the port of entry». And you have to get it before getting on the plane, not after: «Nationals eligible for K-ETA, who wish to enter the Republic of Korea without a visa, must obtain K-ETA approval before boarding the flight or ship. Applying for K-ETA after boarding or while already in Korea may result in disadvantages, such as refusal of K-ETA approval or entry restrictions». In return you save yourself a form: «Those with K-ETA approval can pass through entry immigration more conveniently, as they will be exempt from submitting the arrival card when entering the Republic of Korea». Careful: the K-ETA and the Q-CODE are two different procedures, from two different bodies. The K-ETA belongs to the Ministry of Justice and is paid; the Q-CODE belongs to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), is a health declaration and is free.

⚠️ Sensitive information — always check the official source
Visa requirements, quotas, amounts and dates change often. Every fact in this guide was checked against the official source on 2026-09-23 and we re-check it periodically, but before starting any procedure confirm the details on the official links (embassy, consulate or ministry) shown on this page. viajacongus.com does not process visas and does not replace official information.
💵 How much it costs
K-ETA: 10.000 KOREAN WON per person. Verbatim from the portal: «The K-ETA application fee is 10,000 KRW per person. *Approximately USD $7~8». And there is a surcharge added on top, which the body itself publishes: «When paying the K-ETA application fee, additional online payment processing fees may apply. (generally about 3%)». In other words, about 10.300 won in total, between 7 and 8 dollars. IT IS NEVER REFUNDED: «The fee covers the K-ETA application and examination process. Once paid, it is non-refundable regardless of the examination outcome». Not if you are refused, not if you cancel the trip. It is paid with «VISA, MASTER, JCB, AMEX, Diners Club, DISCOVER, UnionPay or Alipay+», and the portal warns about a very common problem: «If your card's overseas payment option is blocked, the fee may not be processed successfully» — if your bank has blocked overseas payments on your card, the payment fails. THERE IS NO PAID EXPRESS PROCEDURE: «Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received, and there is no expedited service to speed up processing for specific applications». If someone sells you an express K-ETA, they are scamming you. Q-CODE: FREE. It is a KDCA system for declaring health information before entry and has no fee. If you are in the group exempt from K-ETA until 31/12/2026, entry costs you ZERO: no K-ETA, no visa, no paid form.
⏳ How long it takes
Official timeframe, verbatim: «K-ETA assessment typically takes 72 hour or less. However, please note that it may take more than 72 hours due to an unexpected increase in applications or other circumstances». Seventy-two hours or less as a general rule, with the express warning that it may take longer. And the body's own recommendation is far more conservative than people assume: in the notice «Notice about the Estimated Time for K-ETA Screening», the Ministry of Justice writes «Therefore, we recommend you to apply for K-ETA in advance (1~2 months prior to expected date of entry)». ONE TO TWO MONTHS before the date of entry. There is no accelerated service, you cannot pay to jump the queue, and applications are reviewed in order of arrival. Q-CODE: it is completed on the spot and the QR code is issued when you finish; the window for submitting it is the 7 days before arrival.
📅 How long it's valid
These are TWO different clocks, and mixing them up is the most expensive mistake in this procedure. CLOCK 1 — HOW LONG THE K-ETA LASTS: THREE YEARS, not two. Verbatim: «You can use K-ETA multiple times within the validity period. * Validity Period: 3 Years (if the passport expiration date is shorter than 3 years, valid until the passport expiration date) * Applications submitted before 2023.07.03: valid for 2 years». The extension from 2 to 3 years was announced in the notice «Expansion of K-ETA Validity Period» and applies to applications submitted after 3 July 2023 at 00:00 KST. If your K-ETA is older than that date, it is still valid for 2 years. And if your passport expires before the 3 years are up, the K-ETA expires with the passport. CLOCK 2 — HOW MANY DAYS YOU CAN STAY: the K-ETA does not decide that. Verbatim: «However, the validity period of K-ETA is separate from the visa-free stay period, so if you enter the country with a K-ETA, you cannot stay longer than the visa-free stay period for each country. The visa-free stay period for a single entry varies by country». Holding a K-ETA valid for three years does NOT mean you can stay for three years: you can stay for the days assigned to your passport (90 days, 3 months or 30 days depending on the country), and with a single K-ETA you can enter and leave as many times as you like within those three years. THE TEMPORARY EXEMPTION — AND THIS IS THE DATE TO WRITE DOWN: the K-ETA exemption for 25 countries and regions runs from 1 April 2023 to 31 DECEMBER 2026 (KST). The official notice says: «The Ministry of Justice decided to extend the temporary exemption period for 1 more year to stimulate the tourism industry, the exemption will be effective until December 31, 2026 (KST). * Extended K-ETA temporary exemption period: From January 1, 2026 (Thu) to December 31, 2026 (Thu) (KST)». The official reason for the measure is the «Visit Korea Year(2023-2026)». As of 23/09/2026 NO extension beyond 31/12/2026 has been published. Q-CODE: it is used up as soon as you enter — «The validity of input Q-CODE expires upon completion of the corresponding immigration process. Please input new quarantine information at the time of next entry to the Republic of Korea».

👤 Who needs it?

We read the three official lists on 23/09/2026 and our twenty-eight nationalities fall into three groups. GROUP 1 — EXEMPT FROM K-ETA UNTIL 31/12/2026, they neither pay nor apply for anything: GERMANY, AUSTRALIA, DENMARK, SPAIN, THE UNITED STATES and ITALY. That is six. GROUP 2 — HAVE TO GET THE K-ETA AND PAY FOR IT: Andorra, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. That is twenty. GROUP 3 — NOT ELIGIBLE FOR K-ETA AND NEED A VISA: BOLIVIA and CUBA. They do not appear on the portal's list of 116 eligible countries and regions, so there is no K-ETA to apply for: you have to request a visa at the Korean consulate. The DAYS OF STAY granted by visa-free entry depend on your citizenship, and we also read them one by one on the official list: 90 days for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, the United States, Guatemala, Italy, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela; 3 MONTHS —which the portal deliberately writes differently— for MEXICO, SURINAME and Belgium; and only 30 DAYS for ANDORRA, GUYANA, HONDURAS and PARAGUAY. There are also exemptions that depend not on the country but on the person, which the portal lists as follows: Koreans and dual nationals with a valid Korean passport; US military personnel on active duty under the SOFA; flight crew and seafarers; ABTC (APEC) card holders; transit passengers; registered foreigners and visa holders; UN passport holders; diplomatic or official passport holders; cruise passengers; and —the most important one for families— «Those who are 17 years old and younger or 65 years old and older (on the date of entry)».

🧭 The step by step

1
Step 0: check whether you are exempt until 31 December 2026, because you may not have to do anything at all
Korea temporarily suspended the K-ETA for 25 countries and regions «as part of a plan to support the revitalization of the tourism industry in relation to commemorating 「Visit Korea Year(2023-2026)」». The full official list, as published by Korean missions: ASIA (5): Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Macao. AMERICAS (3): Canada, the United States and Guam. EUROPE (13+2): the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, plus Switzerland and Liechtenstein. OCEANIA (2): Australia and New Zealand. Of our twenty-eight nationalities, six are exempt: Germany, Australia, Denmark, Spain, the United States and Italy. If your passport is one of those, you apply for nothing and pay nothing: you show up at the airport with your passport.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: THE DATE: 31 DECEMBER 2026 (KST). As of 23/09/2026 no extension beyond that date has been published, and the programme that justifies it —the «Visit Korea Year»— ends in 2026. If your trip is in 2027, today you can NOT take it for granted that you are exempt: check the notice board at k-eta.go.kr before buying your ticket. If your flight crosses 31 December 2026, get the K-ETA anyway: it costs seven dollars and lasts three years.
2
If you are exempt but want the K-ETA anyway, you can: it saves you a form at the airport
The exemption does not stop you from getting one. The official notice puts it this way: «Still, those who wish to receive benefits from K-ETA approval, such as not having to submit an arrival card, may apply for K-ETA; in that case, the application fee will be charged». The concrete benefit is in the general conditions: «Those with K-ETA approval can pass through entry immigration more conveniently, as they will be exempt from submitting the arrival card when entering the Republic of Korea». In other words: with a K-ETA you do not fill in the arrival card on the plane or in the queue.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: If you are exempt and decide to get it, you pay the 10.000 won all the same. And if you already had one from before, it remains valid until it expires: «Those who have obtained K-ETA can use it until its expiration date and the application fee paid is non-refundable». Nobody gives you your money back for having become exempt afterwards.
3
Check whether your country is among the 116 eligible ones, because two are not
The page «Countries/Targets Available for Application» lists 116 countries and regions whose citizens can apply for a K-ETA, with the days of stay granted to each nationality. We read it in full on 23/09/2026 and of our twenty-eight nationalities there are TWO that do not appear: BOLIVIA and CUBA. If your passport is Bolivian or Cuban, there is no K-ETA to apply for: visa-free entry does not apply to you and you have to request a visa at the Korean consulate.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Do not confuse «I am not on the K-ETA list» with «I cannot go to Korea». It means your route is the visa, which is a different procedure, longer and with documents to submit. Look into it months ahead, not weeks.
4
Write down how many days YOU get, because it is not 90 for everyone
The days of visa-free stay depend on your citizenship and are published country by country on the official list. Data read on 23/09/2026 for our nationalities: 90 DAYS for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, the United States, Guatemala, Italy, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela. 3 MONTHS for Mexico and Suriname. And only 30 DAYS for ANDORRA, GUYANA, HONDURAS and PARAGUAY.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Two fine points. First: «90 days» and «3 months» are NOT the same thing, and the portal deliberately writes them differently — three calendar months can be 89, 90, 91 or 92 days depending on which months they are. Second: if your passport is Andorran, Guyanese, Honduran or Paraguayan, you have 30 days, not 90. A six-week itinerary through Korea, Japan and Korea again is impossible with 30 days and a single entry: plan it with the real figure.
5
Go ONLY to k-eta.go.kr or the official app. There are no authorised agencies
The first line on the portal's home page says it: «K-ETA application is available only at "www.k-eta.go.kr" or the mobile app (K-ETA). (Application fee: approximately USD 7~8). Please be careful of similar agencies/phishing sites that charge high fees under the pretext of providing K-ETA application agency (or expedited) services». And the notice «Beware of NON-OFFICIAL Websites and Agencies for K-ETA» is even clearer: «some non-official websites were recently found demanding a higher application fee. As relevant damage incidents have been reported, please be cautious about non-official websites, agencies, etc. Please be informed that the Government of the Republic of Korea has not delegated the service of the K-ETA application to any agencies».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Read the key sentence twice: the Korean government has NOT delegated the procedure to any agency. None. There is no such thing as an authorised agency. And since there is no expedited procedure —«there is no expedited service»—, anyone selling you an «urgent K-ETA» is selling you something that does not exist. The official phone number is 02-2666-0463, with the clarification that «In principle, K-ETA Center does NOT provide telephone or face to face consultations»: enquiries go through the portal's [Ask Us] form.
6
Decide whether to apply as a member or a non-member. It changes little, but it changes
The portal offers both routes and spells out what they share: «Commonalities between non-members and members: Application fee, assessment time, permit validity period». The price, the waiting time and the validity are identical. What registering adds: «You can check the result and update information without email verification» and «You can view all application details at once». There are seven steps in both cases: acceptance of terms, sign-up or email verification, passport details, application details, review of the information, payment and application complete.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: If you are travelling as a family or a group, register as a member: without an account, every time you want to see the result or change the travel information you have to verify each person's email again. And if you started and saved with «Save Temporarily», you have seven days to come back: «if the saved form is not retrieved within 7 days, it will be deleted automatically».
7
Choose your email account carefully, because Gmail is causing problems
This is a current and specific official notice, published on 11 March 2026: «We are currently experiencing delays in receiving emails from GMail users. Consequently, K-ETA applications submitted via GMail may face difficulties. We kindly request that you use an alternative email address for your application. (For U.S.-based email services such as outlook.com and hotmail.com, the same reception delays may also occur.)». The body itself asks you to use a different email address.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: If you are a non-member, the email is not a detail: it is the key to everything. With the email you verify the application, resume a saved form, check the result and update the travel information. If the email does not arrive, you are locked out of your own application. Use an address that is not Gmail, Outlook or Hotmail, or register as a member so you do not depend on email.
8
Gather the four things the system asks for, and nothing else
The official list of «Items to prepare for K-ETA application» is short: «01 Valid passport», «02 Valid e-mail address», «03 ID photo», «04 Credit or debit cards that can be used to pay the fee». The photo is uploaded by scanning the passport data page with your phone camera or by uploading the file, and the system fills in the fields on its own. On religious clothing there is an official answer: «You may upload the photo wearing religious clothing for religious purposes. However, the face of the applicant (from the forehead to the chin) should be shown clearly».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Korea does NOT publish specifications for the size, weight or background of the K-ETA photo: NOT PUBLISHED. The only published requirement is that the face must be clearly visible from forehead to chin. That is why an ordinary ID-style photo is best: facing forward, with even lighting, no sunglasses, no cap and a plain background. The only explicit condition is that your whole face can be seen.
9
When scanning the passport, check the surname field
It is a real problem with an official answer. Verbatim: «On some countries' passports such as Malaysia, surname and given name are not separated. In this case, when the passport bio page is uploaded, the full name will be automatically entered in the surname field and the given name field will be grayed out. If the full name is entered correctly as written on the MRZ at the bottom of the page, you do not need to edit it». The practical rule is to look at the MRZ —those two lines of characters at the foot of the passport page— and check that what the system entered matches what it says there.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: This field hits compound surnames and the double surnames of Spain and Latin America head-on, and those are the norm in our region. If your passport says «GARCIA LOPEZ» in the surname field and «MARIA JOSE» in the given names field, it has to stay exactly like that. A mistake here cannot be fixed afterwards: you have to apply again and pay again.
10
Choose the purpose of entry precisely, because there is a new one
The purposes allowed under visa-free entry are, verbatim from the applicant page: «People intending to stay for a short period of time for travel, visiting relatives, attending events or conferences, or business purposes (no commercial activities allowed)». Tourism, visiting family, events or conferences, and business without commercial activity. In March 2024 the Ministry of Justice added a category of its own: «Introduction of 「Tour (Incentive Travel)」as a New Purpose of Entry», for corporate incentive trips.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: The bracketed «no commercial activities allowed» is the limit. Going to sell, to work even for a few days, or to do any paid activity is not covered by the K-ETA, and declaring a false purpose has a written consequence: «K-ETA approval will be refused or canceled if false or inaccurate information is submitted on the application. The individual may also be subject to penalties or entry restrictions according to relevant Korean laws». And worse: «These restrictions apply equally to all accompanying applicants, including the user» — it falls on everyone who applied together.
11
Pay the 10.000 won and count the surcharge
The fee is 10.000 won per person, around 7 or 8 dollars, and on top of that the payment gateway's surcharge is added: «additional online payment processing fees may apply. (generally about 3%)». Accepted cards are «VISA, MASTER, JCB, AMEX, Diners Club, DISCOVER, UnionPay or Alipay+». The receipt arrives automatically by email since July 2023: «the receipt for the applications submitted after July 3, 2023, 09:00 (KST) will be sent to the applicant's e-mail address automatically».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Two official warnings about payment. One: «If your card's overseas payment option is blocked, the fee may not be processed successfully» — if your bank has blocked overseas purchases on your card, enable them BEFOREHAND. Two, if a 3DS error appears: «Please contact the card company if a 3DS (payer authentication) error message appears when you are making the payment». The authentication error is resolved by your bank, not by the Korean portal. And the fee is not refunded whatever happens: «non-refundable regardless of the examination outcome».
12
Wait the 72 hours without retrying, because retrying can get you blocked for six months
This is the step nobody expects and the one that ruins the most trips. Official notice «The Restriction on the Number of K-ETA Applications due to Repetitive Application», verbatim: «If applicants applied for K-ETA 3 times and more in the past 6 months, they can re-apply for K-ETA after 6 months from the date of the result of the first application is notified. - If the applicants applied for K-ETA 10 times, they can re-apply for K-ETA after 6 months from the date of the result of the 8th application is notified». Three applications in six months and you are blocked for six months counted from the result of the first one. There is one exception: «However, this policy does not apply to the re-application caused by incorrect personal information (e.g. passport number, name, date of birth, sex, nationality, photo etc.)».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: And what happens if you get blocked: «Applicants who wish to enter Korea during the restriction period, need to apply for a visa at a nearest Korean Embassy or Consulate». In other words, by retrying three times to save time you end up going to the consulate to request a visa. The golden rule: apply ONCE, with the details correct, and wait. Do not reapply because «the email did not arrive»: check the status with [Check Application Results].
13
Confirm the result, and know that approved is not the same as admitted
You check the result on the portal under [Check Application Results]. If you are a non-member, you have to verify your email; if you are a member, logging into your account is enough. The Ministry of Justice published a specific guide with screenshots: «How to check K-ETA application results and update travel information», with versions in several languages. And the underlying warning, worth repeating: «K-ETA is NOT a visa and only fulfills some of the requirements for entering the Republic of Korea without a visa. Please note that an approved K-ETA does not guarantee entry into the Republic of Korea. The final decision will be made by a Korea Immigration Service officer at the port of entry».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Paying for the K-ETA does not buy you the right to enter: it buys you the right to board. The final decision is made by the immigration officer at Incheon, Gimhae or Jeju. Bring your return ticket, your accommodation booking and the address where you will be staying: that is what they are going to ask you for.
14
If anything about your trip changes, UPDATE IT. It is not optional
It is an explicit obligation with an explicit consequence: «If the [Travel Information*] changes after obtaining K-ETA, you must update it on the [Update Travel Information] page of the K-ETA website. Failure to do so may result in entry denial or other disadvantages. * Travel information: Purpose of entry, address of intended stay, contact information, expected date of arrival and depature, information on accompanying persons». The five pieces of information you have to keep updated are: purpose of entry, accommodation address, contact details, expected dates of arrival and departure, and information on your travel companions. It is done on the portal itself, in the [Update Travel Information] section, and it is free.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Changing hotels is the typical case: you get your K-ETA in March with one booking and in June you sleep somewhere else. That has to be updated, and not doing so can end in «entry denial». What you do NOT have to update, on the other hand, is your job: «My occupation has changed after I got K-ETA approval. Do I need to re-apply for K-ETA? — No. (...) Even though your occupation has changed after you got K-ETA approval, you do not need to re-apply».
15
If you renewed your passport, the K-ETA is void: you have to apply again
The rule, verbatim: «Even if your K-ETA has not expired, you must apply for a new K-ETA if your passport has been reissued or if there are changes to your criminal record or infectious disease information». And the FAQ repeats it for the most common case: «I renewed my passport since I lost the previous one that had K-ETA approval. Do I need to re-apply for K-ETA? — If you renewed your passport due to modifying the name, passport loss/renewal, etc, you need to re-apply for K-ETA even if you had approval for the previous passport». Three things force you to redo it: a new passport, changes to your criminal record and changes to your infectious disease information.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: If you have two passports, pick one and use it for everything: «The passport used on the boarding pass, the one you will be using to enter Korea, and the one used in the K-ETA approval must all be the same». The one on the boarding pass, the one at entry and the one on the K-ETA have to be the SAME document. It is the classic trap for dual nationals who get the K-ETA with their European passport and buy the ticket with their Latin American one.
16
The Q-CODE is ANOTHER procedure, from another agency, and it is free
The Q-CODE is run by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and has nothing to do with the K-ETA. The system's own definition, verbatim: «Q-CODE is a system established by the KDCA in order to shorten the time for quarantine inspection and provide the conveniences overseas entrants require upon entry to the Republic of Korea. Anyone who inputs normal quarantine information through Q-CODE will be able to avail fast and convenient quarantine inspection after their arrival at the Republic of Korea». Who has to fill it in: «Target Persons for Input of Q-CODE: People who enter Korea after visiting areas under quarantine control» — people entering Korea after having been in areas under quarantine control. Four things are needed: «1. (Mandatory) Valid passport; 2. (Selective) Valid E-mail address; 3. (Mandatory) Valid airline ticket(Valid boarding pass); 4. (Mandatory) Health Condition Information». There are five steps: accept the terms, personal details, entry and stay details, health condition, and issuing the QR.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: The window is short and timing matters: «The pre-entry system for quarantine information (Q-CODE) allows input starting 7 days prior to your arrival in South Korea. It is crucial to complete the issuance of the QR code before boarding the aircraft». Seven days before, and the QR issued BEFORE boarding. It cannot be corrected: «If any correction is needed for your quarantine information, you may start from the beginning to input information in the system and receive a new QR-Code». And it is good for a single trip: «The validity of input Q-CODE expires upon completion of the corresponding immigration process. Please input new quarantine information at the time of next entry».
17
If you feel unwell or anything about your health changes, say so on arrival
The Q-CODE is not a formality to get out of the way: it is a health declaration with consequences. Verbatim: «In the case of changes in the quarantine information entered due to health conditions or unavoidable circumstances, you must inform the quarantine officer of the updated details upon arrival in South Korea. Otherwise, you may be subject to the disadvantage of quarantine action reinforced by the Quarantine Authority of Korea». And false statements are punished: «If you input false or inaccurate information related to the Q-CODE, you may incur a penalty or be subjected to entry restriction in accordance with the relevant laws and ordinances of the Republic of Korea. The same law applies when you submit false or inaccurate QR-code by proxy». The QR is shown to the quarantine officer: «The QR code (...) should be presented to the quarantine officer during the entry inspection».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: Just like the K-ETA, the Q-CODE does not guarantee you anything either: «Input of Q-CODE may not guarantee quarantine and entry to the Republic of Korea. After arrival, the conditions of entry and quarantine shall be finally determined through evaluation by officers of quarantine control and immigration control in the Republic of Korea». And watch the last sentence of the warning: the penalty also reaches whoever submits a false QR ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE. If you fill in the form for a relative, you are responsible for what you entered.
18
Jeju also requires a K-ETA, even if you have heard it is open
Jeju Island has a special visa-free entry regime that led many people to believe they could enter that way without a K-ETA. That closed in 2022. Official notice, verbatim: «Starting September 1, 2022 (KST), the foreign travelers who are from 112 K-ETA eligible countries (the nationals of visa waiver and visa-free countries/regions) are required to have K-ETA before boarding a Jeju bound flight/vessel from overseas». The stated reason is concrete: «Jeju Island became a target port of entry to the foreigners who were denied of K-ETA but attempting to enter the country without K-ETA».
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: If your itinerary flies straight into Jeju from abroad —there are flights from several Asian countries—, you need the K-ETA all the same. The exception under Jeju's special regime now applies only to foreigners who are NOT nationals of visa waiver countries, which is exactly the opposite of our readers' situation.
19
Before you fly, check the portal's notice board
The K-ETA is one of the procedures that publishes the most operational notices, and some of them change day to day. As of 23/09/2026 the board has in force, among others: the notice about delays with Gmail (11/03/2026), the notice that the online enquiry service will be closed for the Chuseok holiday from 24 to 26 September 2026 —with the clarification that «During this period, assessment process will be proceeded as usual», meaning assessment continues—, and the how-to-apply guide updated on 07/01/2026 with PDFs in English, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Hungarian, Dutch and Arabic. The portal also has a «Special Entry Procedure Declaration» mechanism that is activated in disaster situations and requires all foreigners to declare their entry before travelling; as of 23/09/2026 we verified that it was NOT active.
Go to the official site for this step →
Watch out: This is the step most people skip and the cheapest to do: it is two minutes of reading. With a country exemption that expires on 31 December 2026, a health regime that changes by the quarter and an emergency mechanism that can be switched on, the official notice board is the only place where you will see the change before the airport counter tells you about it.
