Few cities in the world have a guardian as imposing as the one watching over Arequipa. The Misti volcano, an almost perfect cone of 5,822 meters, rises above the 'White City' and turns up in nearly every picture of it, peering out behind the sillar domes of the cathedral and the convents. It's Arequipa's natural symbol and, for many travelers, a temptation: climbing to its summit is one of the most accessible and classic high-altitude ascents in the Andes of southern Peru.
The Misti is an active stratovolcano, though at rest and closely watched by volcanologists. Climbing it calls for no complicated climbing technique, but it does demand very good physical condition, careful acclimatization to the altitude and, almost always, a mountain guide alongside you. The reward is huge: from the top a spectacular view opens up over Arequipa, the valley, the Colca Canyon in the distance and the neighboring volcanoes —the Chachani and the Pichu Pichu—, plus the satisfaction of topping out on a 'five thousand eight hundred'.

Origins, formation and what the sources say.
A million arequipeños live at the foot of an active volcano and greet it every morning like an old acquaintance. The Misti is no ordinary hill: it's a steep-coned stratovolcano —built up by successive layers of lava, ash and other material thrown out over thousands of years— that still breathes sulphur through its crater. It rises to around 5,822 meters above sea level and forms part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes, in an intensely volcanic region of southern Peru where its neighbors, the Chachani and the Pichu Pichu, also stand. Its remarkably symmetrical cone is what gives it that almost perfect outline dominating the Arequipa skyline and appearing in every picture of the White City.
Geologically, the Misti sits within the volcanic zone of the Central Andes, where the subduction of the oceanic Nazca plate beneath the South American plate generates the magmatism that feeds the volcanoes. The Misti is an active volcano in a state of rest: its crater has fumaroles (emissions of gas and sulphur vapor) showing that the volcanic system is still alive below the surface. Over its geological history it has produced eruptions of varying magnitude.
What makes the Misti's situation especially delicate is how close it is to a big city. Arequipa, with close to a million inhabitants, has grown practically at its foot. That makes the Misti one of the highest-risk volcanoes in Peru: a major eruption could affect an enormous population. It is therefore monitored around the clock by specialist institutions, which watch its seismicity, its gases and any sign of reactivation.
For pre-Hispanic Andean cultures, the great mountains and volcanoes were not simple geographical features but living, sacred beings: the 'apus', tutelary deities that controlled the weather, the water and fertility, and that had to be honored and appeased with offerings. The Misti, for its sheer presence and its volcanic nature —capable of throwing out fire and ash— was an especially powerful and feared apu, venerated by the peoples who inhabited the region long before the Incas arrived and, later, within the Tahuantinsuyo.
One of the most striking proofs of this veneration came with the archaeological finds on the summit and around the volcano. On the Misti, evidence was found of the Inca practice of the 'capacocha' (or capac cocha), a ritual of great importance in which offerings —including ritual human sacrifices, generally of selected children or young people— were made on the summits of sacred mountains. These finds, together with offerings of fine objects, pottery and figurines, confirmed that the Misti was a high-altitude shrine of the first rank.
The capacocha was a rite that bound communities to the Inca state and to the mountain deities, and it was practiced on numerous volcanoes and snow peaks of the southern Andes (the most famous case is that of the 'Lady of Ampato' or 'Juanita', found on the nearby Ampato volcano). The Misti, close to important settlements and an active volcano in its own right, held a prominent place in this sacred geography. Its status as an apu still survives today in Arequipa's popular culture.
The history of the Misti is inseparable from that of Arequipa. When the Spanish founded the city of Arequipa in 1540, they did so in a valley at the foot of the volcano, beside the Chili river. And the very nature of the Misti and the neighboring volcanoes ended up giving the city its most distinctive feature: sillar, a white volcanic stone —produced by the region's eruptions— used to build its churches, convents, mansions and arcades. That material earned Arequipa the nickname of the 'White City'.
Sillar, easy to carve and very beautiful, made it possible to raise a monumental body of colonial and republican architecture of enormous value, with jewels such as the Cathedral, the Monastery of Santa Catalina and the many churches of the center. That historic center of Arequipa, with its characteristic sillar architecture and its setting of volcanoes, was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2000. So the Misti not only watches over the city from the horizon: it is literally present in its walls.
The coexistence of Arequipa and its volcano has also had its tense moments. Over the course of history the region has suffered earthquakes and volcanic episodes, and the memory of how dangerous the Misti can be is part of local culture. But beyond the risk, the volcano is a source of pride and identity: it appears on the coat of arms, in the songs, in the iconography and in the imagination of arequipeños, who consider it the guardian of their city.
The Misti is an active volcano, and although today it is at rest, its eruptive history and its closeness to Arequipa make it the object of constant scientific attention. Over the centuries it has had episodes of activity —eruptions, ash emissions and fumaroles— recorded both in the geology and in the chronicles and memory of the region. The fumaroles in its crater are a reminder that the volcanic system is still active below the surface.
The great challenge of the Misti is that it is a high-risk volcano: a very large population lives on its slopes, that of the city of Arequipa and its surroundings. A major eruption could produce lava flows, ash fall, pyroclastic flows and, if ice melted or along the ravines, lahars (flows of mud and debris) that would reach inhabited areas. That is why the specialist bodies study its eruptive scenarios and draw up hazard maps for the region.
Monitoring the Misti is the job of institutions such as the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (through its southern volcano observatory) and INGEMMET (with its own volcano observatory), which continuously watch its seismicity, ground deformation, gas emissions and other signals that could point to a reactivation. This watch, together with preparing the population, aims to reduce the risk of a big city living alongside its volcano. For the visitor who climbs to the summit, seeing the crater's fumaroles is a direct reminder that the Misti is alive.
With the arrival of the modern era and the growth of mountaineering, the Misti took on a new dimension: that of a sporting and exploratory objective. Its imposing height combined with a relatively accessible climb (no great technical difficulties on the normal route) made it one of the most climbed volcanoes in the Andes of southern Peru. As early as the 19th century there were ascents for scientific purposes: the volcano even housed facilities for astronomical and meteorological observation on its summit, taking advantage of its altitude and the clarity of the region's skies.
Through the 20th century and up to today, the Misti has established itself as a classic of Andean climbing. For many mountaineers it's the first 'five thousand eight hundred' they top out on, an excellent gateway to the high Andes. Its closeness to Arequipa, which offers all the infrastructure, guides and agencies, makes organizing the climb easy. Arequipeños, moreover, keep a special relationship with their volcano: climbing it is almost a local rite, and it's not unusual to come across parties going up out of tradition or devotion.
Today the climb up the Misti is one of the headline adventure tourism experiences in Arequipa, along with the Colca Canyon and other destinations. It's usually done over two days, with a high camp, and it demands acclimatization and good fitness more than technique. Topping out, beside the big iron cross and on the rim of the smoking crater, with Arequipa and the neighboring volcanoes at your feet, is a reward that combines physical effort with the thrill of standing on a sacred apu and a living volcano.
