The origin of the name: Tobatí in Guaraní

In Tobatí, the name of the town, the clay of its kilns and the pale rock walls that surround it seem to tell one and the same story: that of a place made of earth. Tobatí comes from Guaraní, like so many Paraguayan place names, and its meaning —disputed, but always tied to the earth or to a white rock wall— foreshadows what the town's destiny would be: to become the country's ceramics capital. The most widespread interpretations link it to elements of the language that refer to earth, clay or a feature of the face or of a surface. Some readings relate it to the idea of 'earth' or 'clay' (which would fit remarkably with the town's pottery vocation), while others associate it with Guaraní words such as 'tovatî', read as 'white face', 'white brow' or 'white bank/rock wall', possibly referring to the pale rock formations of the area.

The presence of hills and rock walls around Tobatí lends credibility to the reading tied to a pale-coloured 'wall' or 'bank', while the abundance of clay and the ceramic tradition reinforce the association with earth and clay. Far from excluding each other, both interpretations sketch the profile of a place defined by its geology: rock, clay and relief.

The area was inhabited by Guaraní communities and, after the founding of Asunción in 1537 and the organization of colonial Paraguay, it was absorbed into the system of settlement and evangelization that spread across the Cordillera de los Altos region, where numerous pueblos de indios were established.

Like other places in the area —Yaguarón, Itá, Atyrá, Altos—, Tobatí took shape around religious life, a square and a church, with the Guaraní population gathered and organized under colonial administration and the work of the religious orders. That colonial matrix shaped the town and its church, and laid the foundations of its later development.

Tobatí's location, at the foot of hills and rock formations and in an area rich in clay, would prove decisive for its future: the geology of the place, which gave it its name and its landscape, would also give it its great economic and cultural vocation, pottery, which in time would turn the town into a craft reference for the whole country.

Tobatí and Caacupé: the legend of the two images of the Virgin

Tobatí's religious tradition is closely intertwined with that of neighbouring Caacupé through one of Paraguay's best-loved legends. According to the story, in colonial times a converted Guaraní man and skilled carver named José was saved from a party of hostile Indigenous people by hiding behind a tree and calling on the Virgin. In gratitude, he carved from that same wood two images of the Immaculate Conception: one larger and one smaller.

According to tradition, the larger image remained linked to the church of Tobatí, while the small one became the present-day Virgin of Caacupé, the beloved 'Virgencita Azul', patron of Paraguay. This duality establishes a symbolic and devotional bond between the two neighbouring Cordillera towns, joined by one and the same legendary story.

Like every popular tradition, the story mixes historical elements —the Franciscan presence, the conflicts with peoples of the Chaco, the art of colonial religious imagery— with legendary ones. More than a verifiable historical fact, it's a founding myth of deep religious roots that is part of the region's intangible cultural heritage and connects Tobatí with the country's main pilgrimage centre.

The pottery vocation: Tobatí, ceramics capital

The trait that would in time define Tobatí's identity is its extraordinary pottery vocation. The abundance of clay in the area —tied to the same geology that gave it its name and its landscape of hills and banks— favoured the development of ceramics and pottery as the town's central economic and cultural activity. Generation after generation, Tobatí families learned and passed on the craft of working clay.

Out of the workshops and kilns of Tobatí come flowerpots, pots, jars, pitchers, decorative figures and utilitarian objects that are distributed throughout Paraguay, to the point that the town is recognized as the national capital of ceramics and pottery. Production combines utilitarian pieces for everyday use with decorative and artistic ceramics, and provides a living for much of the population.

This tradition makes Tobatí one of the country's great centres of folk art and a craft-tourism destination: visiting the family workshops, watching the clay process and buying directly from the makers is the town's central experience. Tobatí pottery is also part of Paraguay's living cultural heritage, a craft still practised with inherited techniques.

Wood carving and the legacy of Zenón Páez

Alongside ceramics, Tobatí developed another great craft tradition: wood carving. The town is famous for its carvers, who produce religious images, popular figures, masks and decorative objects, combining the legacy of colonial religious imagery with the creativity of Paraguayan folk art. This tradition gained national and international renown thanks to master craftsmen who emerged from the town itself.

The most famous of them was Zenón Páez, considered one of the great wood carvers of Paraguay. His work —of strong popular and religious character— gave Tobatí art prestige beyond the town's borders and set a standard among local artisans, many of whom continue and reinterpret that legacy. The figure of Páez became forever associated with Tobatí's artistic identity.

Thanks to this double tradition —ceramics and wood carving—, Tobatí is considered one of Paraguay's main centres of folk art. Its heritage isn't kept in display cases but alive in the family workshops where people keep creating, which makes the town a privileged destination for getting a close look at Paraguayan folk art and for directly supporting those who keep it alive.
