📌What it is
Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve is a private reserve of about 600 hectares of forest in the mountainous north of Eswatini, a few kilometres from Piggs Peak, in the Hhohho region. At its heart is the Phophonyane River, which runs down a jungle-clad gorge in a series of waterfalls, rapids and natural pools, with the main drop of about 80 metres. It's a calm, green corner, ideal for easy walks, swimming in rock pools and watching birds and monkeys, with a charming ecolodge among the falls as a base for the night.
📌Best time to go
Phophonyane can be enjoyed all year round. The dry season (May to September) is the most comfortable for the trails, with cool weather and no mud, although the falls carry less water. In summer (November to March) there is more rain, the forest turns lush and the falls run with much more volume and force, but it's more humid and hot, and some stretches get slippery. The natural pools for swimming are best enjoyed in the warmer months. Because of the altitude, nights are cool for most of the year.
📌Suggested days
Half a day is enough to walk the main trails, see the falls and enjoy a swim in the pools. But Phophonyane invites you to stay: spending one or two nights at its ecolodge, surrounded by the sound of water and forest, is one of the most relaxing experiences in the north. As a base it combines very well with Nsangwini (which the lodge helps you visit), Piggs Peak and Maguga Dam, all nearby, so two nights let you bring together nature, culture and rest.
📌Getting there
The reserve is about 8-10 km northeast of Piggs Peak, along a signposted turn-off from the main road, heading towards the Lowveld. From the town it's 15-20 minutes by car; the last stretches are on a rural road. From Mbabane it's about 2 hours. There's no public transport to the reserve, so the best option is a rental car or arranging a transfer with the ecolodge. Drive carefully on the dirt road, especially after rain.
📌What to do
The main things are walking and enjoying the water: well-maintained trails through the gorge forest (such as Gobolondlo Ridge) lead to the falls, the rapids and the natural pools where you can swim. On top of that there's bird and monkey watching, the guided walks and 4x4 outings offered by the lodge, and visits to the nearby Nsangwini rock art. It's a destination of quiet nature, perfect for switching off, walking at an easy pace and taking a dip in mountain pools.
📌Language and currency
siSwati and English are spoken; the lodge staff speak English. The currency is the lilangeni (emalangeni; SZL or E), pegged at par to the South African rand, which is also accepted. In mid-2026 the exchange rate is around 18 emalangeni to the dollar. You can pay by card at the ecolodge, but it's worth carrying some cash for the entrance fee, tips and expenses in the rural area, where there are no ATMs nearby. Entry to the reserve is inexpensive, about E40-50 per person.

Hidden in the forest of northern Eswatini, a stone's throw from Piggs Peak, Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve is one of those places that invite you to slow down and breathe. Across its 600 hectares of mountain forest, the Phophonyane River tumbles down a gorge in a succession of waterfalls, rapids and natural pools of fresh water, surrounded by lush vegetation, birds and monkeys. It's a calm, green corner, very different from the big safari parks, made for walking, swimming and switching off.

The heart of the reserve is its main waterfall, about 80 metres high, and the network of trails winding through the forest to viewpoints and pools where you can take a dip. And its great charm is that you can sleep right in the heart of this paradise: the Phophonyane ecolodge, with cottages, traditional 'beehive' huts and luxury tents overlooking the falls, is one of the most special and romantic stays in the country, with the murmur of the water as its soundtrack.

This guide takes a practical look at Phophonyane: how to get there, which trails and pools to enjoy, where to sleep and eat, and how to combine the reserve with the Nsangwini rock art, Piggs Peak and Maguga Dam, all nearby. For anyone looking for quiet nature, water and rest in the mountainous north, Phophonyane is a gem that deserves more than a passing visit.

📖 History of Phophonyane Falls

The name 'Phophonyane' evokes in siSwati the sound and fall of water, and it describes perfectly this corner where the river of the same name runs down the gorge in falls and pools. The area, in the forested north near the old Piggs Peak gold mines, was protected as a private nature reserve to preserve its forest, its waters and its wildlife, and it became one of Eswatini's first ecolodges, a pioneer of low-impact nature tourism. Today its 600 hectares combine conservation, hiking and rest. The full story is told on our history page.

The star of the reserve is the main Phophonyane waterfall, a drop of about 80 metres where the river plunges down the gorge surrounded by forest. It's the high point of the trails and one of the most beautiful landscapes in northern Eswatini: water falling through jungle vegetation, with the noise and freshness that give the place its name. From viewpoints and spots along the trail you can take in the waterfall and the set of rapids and smaller drops the river forms along its descent. It's an especially powerful sight in the rainy season, when the flow multiplies. Getting there: along the reserve's trails from the ecolodge or the entrance. Best time: summer and shortly after the rains for maximum flow. Tips: stick to the marked trails; wear shoes with good grip, as the rocks near the water are slippery.

A short distance from Phophonyane, towards the Komati River valley, lies Nsangwini, Eswatini's finest rock art site, with paintings by the ancient San hunter-gatherers up to 4,000 years old, including the only known 'winged' human figures. The Phophonyane ecolodge usually offers or arranges the visit to Nsangwini, which makes it very easy to combine nature and heritage in a single stay. It's the perfect cultural excursion to complement a restful stay at the falls: a morning among the ancient paintings and an afternoon swimming in the forest pools. Getting there: via the MR1 and a rural turn-off, arranged through the lodge. Best time: dry season; go early because of the heat. Tips: entry about E80 with a community guide; see the Nsangwini page for more detail.

📖 History of Phophonyane Falls

Origins, formation and what the sources say.

Phophonyane: 'the sound of falling water'

The name 'Phophonyane' is itself a description of the place: in siSwati it evokes the sound and fall of water, the constant murmur of the river tumbling down the gorge. Before it was a reserve or an ecolodge, this corner of northern Eswatini was simply that: a stretch of mountain forest where the Phophonyane River ran down in waterfalls, rapids and pools, in a lush, humid, cool setting very different from the dry lands of the rest of the country.

Geographically, Phophonyane belongs to the mountainous, forested north of Eswatini, the same region of hills, mists and valleys where, in the late 19th century, the gold rush broke out that gave rise to the nearby town of Piggs Peak. It is a transition zone between the cool Highveld and the warm Lowveld to the east, which gives it lush vegetation and a great wealth of birds and forest wildlife.

For centuries, this forest and its river were part of the landscape of the Swazi kingdom, used by local communities and roamed by wildlife. Its particular beauty — water falling through the forest — set it apart as a special place, an oasis of coolness and greenery in the north of the country, long before tourism took notice of it.

From northern forest to nature reserve

In a region where much of the natural landscape was transformed by gold and asbestos mining and, above all, by the vast pine and eucalyptus plantations that now cover the northern hills, conserving a native forest like Phophonyane's took on special value. Protecting this stretch of riverine forest, with its river, waterfalls and wildlife, meant preserving a piece of the original nature of northern Eswatini against the spread of industrial forestry.

That is how the Phophonyane Nature Reserve came about: a private protected area of around 600 hectares centred on the river gorge and its forest. The reserve safeguards not only the waterfalls and pools, but also the habitat of many birds, monkeys and other species that depend on this mountain forest environment, which is increasingly scarce in the region.

Protecting the area relied on a low-impact nature tourism model: instead of exploiting the forest, the choice was to conserve it and open it to visitors looking for walks, swims and rest in a wild setting. That philosophy would make Phophonyane a pioneer of ecotourism in Eswatini.

A pioneer of Swazi ecotourism

Phophonyane became one of the first ecolodges in Eswatini and a benchmark for nature tourism in the country. The idea was simple and ahead of its time: let people enjoy the forest and the waterfalls by sleeping right inside it, in lodgings blended into the landscape and respectful of their surroundings, thereby funding the reserve's conservation.

The ecolodge developed accommodation full of charm and character: comfortable, well-equipped cottages, 'beehive' huts inspired by traditional Swazi architecture, and luxury safari tents overlooking the waterfalls, all set among the vegetation with the sound of water as a constant. Sleeping at Phophonyane became one of the most romantic and unusual experiences in Swazi tourism, far removed from the big resorts.

As well as accommodation, the reserve offered well-maintained trails through the forest — such as the Gobolondlo Ridge trail — swimming in the pools, bird and monkey watching, and guided outings, including a visit to the nearby Nsangwini rock art. In this way, Phophonyane built an offering that combines nature, culture and rest, and that supports local jobs and the economy of the northern region.

Phophonyane today: nature, calm and rest

Today the Phophonyane Nature Reserve is one of the best-loved corners of northern Eswatini and an almost essential stop for anyone seeking quiet nature away from the bustle. Its 600 hectares of forest, with the main waterfall of around 80 metres, the rapids and the natural pools, offer a cool, green refuge that contrasts with the rest of the country and invites you to walk at an easy pace, swim and switch off.

The reserve is part of the nature and culture circuit of the mountainous north, together with Piggs Peak, the Maguga Dam, the Nsangwini rock art and the Malolotja mountains. Being close to all of them — Nsangwini a short distance away, Maguga half an hour away, Piggs Peak just round the corner — makes it an excellent base for exploring the area, combining rest at the falls with excursions to the surroundings.

As an example of private conservation and ecotourism, Phophonyane shows that protecting a forest can go hand in hand with sustainable tourism that benefits both communities and travellers. For those who make it here, the reserve is a lesson in calm: the sound of water, the green of the forest and the slow rhythm of the mountains, in one of the most peaceful and beautiful corners of Eswatini.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is Phophonyane and why visit?+
It's a private nature reserve of about 600 hectares of forest near Piggs Peak, in northern Eswatini, where the Phophonyane River runs down a gorge in a series of waterfalls, rapids and natural pools, with a main drop of about 80 metres. People visit to walk forest trails, swim in pools of fresh water, watch birds and monkeys and switch off in a calm, green setting. Its ecolodge, among the falls, is one of the most special stays in the country.
Can I visit for the day or do I need to stay overnight?+
You can visit for the day by paying an inexpensive entrance fee (about E40-50 per person), which gives access to the trails, the falls and the pools. But Phophonyane invites you to stay: spending one or two nights at the ecolodge, in a cottage, a beehive hut or a luxury tent by the water, is a very special experience. If you're short on time, half a day covers the essentials; if you're after rest, it's worth staying the night.
Can you swim at the falls?+
Yes, one of the great pleasures of the reserve is its natural pools and swimming holes of fresh water, ideal for a dip, especially in the warmer months (summer). Ask at the ecolodge which pools are safe given the current flow, and don't go in when the river is running very high after rain. The rocks near the water are slippery, so move carefully and wear shoes with good grip.
How do I get there, and do I need a car?+
The reserve is 8-10 km from Piggs Peak, along a signposted rural turn-off; from the town it's 15-20 minutes. The most practical option is a rental car, as there's no public transport to the reserve and the last stretches are dirt road. If you don't have a car, you can arrange a transfer directly with the ecolodge when you book, or a taxi from Piggs Peak (agreeing on the return trip). Drive carefully on the rural road, especially in the rain.
What other visits can I combine with Phophonyane?+
Very easily with the Nsangwini rock art (the ecolodge usually helps organise the visit), with Piggs Peak and its crafts (15-20 min away) and with Maguga Dam (30-45 min away). Also with Malolotja Nature Reserve, further south. An ideal plan in the mountainous north is to stay at Phophonyane, spend a morning at Nsangwini and an afternoon at the pools and trails, perhaps adding a boat trip on Maguga.
