Olympic National Park is one of those places that seem to hold several parks inside a single one. On one trip you can go from the glaciated summits of the Olympic Mountains, with their alpine meadows and views of the range, to the mossy silence of one of the few temperate rainforests in the northern hemisphere, and from there to a wild, misty Pacific coast strewn with driftwood logs and sea stacks. That extreme diversity, packed into Washington's Olympic Peninsula, earned it World Heritage status from Unesco in 1981.
The park's mountainous heart, overlooked by the Hurricane Ridge viewpoint, is crowned by Mount Olympus (2.432 m) and its glaciers. To the west, where the ocean dumps more than 3.000 mm of rain a year, grow the Hoh and Quinault forests, green cathedrals of giant firs and spruces covered in mosses and lichens. And on the shore, beaches such as Rialto, Ruby or Second Beach offer one of the most pristine stretches of coast in the contiguous United States.

Long before the European explorers arrived, the Olympic Peninsula was home to the Native peoples of the northwest coast —the Quileute, Hoh, Quinault, Makah, S'Klallam and others—, who lived off the salmon, the whales and the forests, and whose reservations still border the park. The mountainous interior, hard to reach, remained almost unexplored by white men until the end of the 19th century: the famous Press Expedition crossed it only in 1889-1890. In 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt created Mount Olympus National Monument to protect the Roosevelt elk, which has its largest population here. In 1938, his cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt pushed through the creation of Olympic National Park, which later added the coastal strip. Unesco recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1981 for its unique natural value. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
The Olympic Mountains are geologically young and have a marine origin. Tens of millions of years ago, the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate began to sink beneath the North American plate (a subduction process that is still active). In that collision, sediments and basalts from the ocean floor were scraped off and piled up against the continent, folding and rising until they formed the Olympic Peninsula. That is why, in the very heart of the range, you still find rocks with marine fossils. The Pleistocene glaciations finished shaping the landscape: glaciers carved out U-shaped valleys and left lakes such as Crescent and Quinault. Mount Olympus (2.432 m), the highest summit, still holds several active glaciers today.
The enormous amount of rain the Pacific dumps on the western slope —more than 3.000 mm a year at some points— gave rise to one of the few temperate rainforests in the northern hemisphere, with Douglas firs, Sitka spruces and giant western red cedars covered in moss. To the east, by contrast, the mountains' rain shadow creates a surprisingly dry zone around Sequim.
Long before the Europeans arrived, the peninsula was the territory of numerous Native peoples of the northwest coast: the Quileute, Hoh, Quinault, Makah, Lower Elwha Klallam, Jamestown S'Klallam and Skokomish, among others. They lived off the abundance of salmon, shellfish, whales and forests, developed a rich culture of canoes, totem poles and cedar plank houses, and to this day maintain reservations that surround the park.
The first Europeans to sight the coast were Spanish and British navigators of the 18th century. In 1774, the Spaniard Juan Pérez sailed these waters, and in 1788 the British captain John Meares named the highest summit 'Mount Olympus', evoking the mountain of the Greek gods for its majesty. The strait separating the peninsula from Vancouver Island bears the name of Juan de Fuca, a Greek navigator in the service of Spain.
While the coast was charted relatively early, the mountainous interior —steep, covered in impenetrable forest and hard to reach— remained practically unexplored by white men until the end of the 19th century. The Olympic range was one of the last unmapped areas in the contiguous United States.
The decisive exploration was the Press Expedition of 1889-1890, financed by the Seattle Press newspaper: a group of men crossed the peninsula from north to south in the depths of winter, on a punishing journey of several months that finally revealed the geography of the interior. Shortly afterwards, expeditions such as that of Lieutenant Joseph O'Neil completed the survey of the mountains. These journeys showed both the natural wealth of the region and the urgency of protecting it from the logging that was advancing on its forests.
At the start of the 20th century, intensive logging and hunting threatened both the great forests and the Roosevelt elk, a subspecies that has its largest population in the world on this peninsula. In 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt used the Antiquities Act to create Mount Olympus National Monument, protecting the mountainous heart and, above all, the elk that would end up carrying his surname.
Over the following decades there was a fierce dispute between conservationists and the timber industry over the fate of the forests. The decisive push came from another Roosevelt: in 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited the peninsula and was moved by the size of the trees. In 1938, Congress created Olympic National Park, protecting the mountains and the great rainforests. In 1953 a coastal strip of some 100 km was added, giving the park its third great ecosystem: the wild Pacific coast.
International recognition confirmed its value: in 1976 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, and in 1981 a World Heritage Site, for the exceptional combination of ecosystems and species it holds in a single place.
What makes Olympic National Park unique is the coexistence of three clearly distinct natural worlds, most of them protected as wilderness. Up high, the glaciers of Mount Olympus and the alpine meadows of Hurricane Ridge fill with flowers in summer. On the western slope, the rainforests of Hoh, Quinault and Queets rank among the most exuberant on the planet, with trees topping 90 meters and trunks carpeted in moss. And along the shore, beaches such as Rialto, Ruby and Second Beach preserve one of the most pristine stretches of coast in the country.
The peninsula's isolation gave rise to endemic species, such as the Olympic marmot, which exists nowhere else in the world. The park is also home to black bears, cougars, river and sea otters, bald eagles and, in its rivers, salmon that run upstream to spawn.
One of the most celebrated ecological restoration projects in United States history happened here: the demolition of the two great dams on the Elwha River, completed in 2014, was at the time the largest dam removal in the country. Freed after almost a century, the river recovered its natural course and the salmon returned to run it, in a case study followed worldwide on the recovery of river ecosystems.
Today Olympic National Park receives around 2,5 to 3 million visitors a year, drawn by that rare chance to touch mountain, temperate rainforest and ocean on a single trip. More than 95% of its surface is designated wilderness, which limits development and preserves its remote character: only secondary roads reach its edges, with no route crossing it from side to side.
The Native nations maintain a living, central presence in the region. Their reservations surround the park and they keep their traditions, their language and their fishing and gathering rights. Places such as Cape Flattery (on Makah land) or the beaches of La Push (Quileute nation) are visited by respecting each community's permits and rules.
The great challenges today are environmental: the retreat of the glaciers on Mount Olympus due to climate change, the health of the salmon populations, tourist pressure on fragile areas such as the Hoh forest and the conservation of the coast. To manage demand, the NPS applies reservation systems at some access points and for backcountry camping. The park remains a symbol of the Pacific Northwest and a living laboratory of conservation.
