Carlsbad Caverns National Park protects one of the most impressive and famous cave systems in the world, in southeastern New Mexico, beneath the Chihuahuan Desert. Its jewel is the 'Big Room', a colossal cavern —one of the largest underground chambers in North America— packed with stalactites, stalagmites, columns and limestone formations sculpted over hundreds of thousands of years.
The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a unique experience: you can descend into the depths on foot through the spectacular natural entrance or go straight down by elevator, and walk the lit trails that wind among the formations. Another of its great spectacles happens at dusk in summer, when hundreds of thousands of bats pour out of the cave into the desert sky.

Origins, formation and what the sources say.
The geological story of Carlsbad begins some 250-265 million years ago, when the region was covered by a tropical sea. Along the edge of that sea grew an extensive reef —the so-called Capitan Reef—, built not by corals like today's but mainly by sponges, algae and other organisms. When the sea evaporated and vanished, that reef was buried under layers of sediment and, over time, turned into limestone. Much later, movements of the crust lifted it and exposed it, forming the Guadalupe Mountains.
What is truly remarkable about Carlsbad is how its caverns were hollowed out. Most limestone caves in the world form from slightly acidic rainwater dissolving the rock from above. But the Carlsbad caverns were created, according to the most widely accepted scientific explanation, in a different way: by sulfuric acid. Groundwater loaded with hydrogen sulfide (coming from nearby oil and gas deposits) reacted and formed sulfuric acid, which dissolved the limestone from below and from within, emptying out enormous chambers.
That process explains the colossal dimensions of rooms like the Big Room. Once the cavities had formed and the water table dropped, the second and most striking phase began: the slow dripping of mineral-laden water deposited, drop by drop and over hundreds of thousands of years, the stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other 'speleothems' (formations) that decorate the cave today. Carlsbad is therefore a rare example of a sulfuric-origin cave, which makes it especially valuable to science.
Humans have known the caverns area for thousands of years. Indigenous peoples lived in and traveled through the Chihuahuan Desert region, and left pictographs near the cave's natural entrance, proof that they knew it was there, although there is no sign that they went deep inside.
The key figure in making the caverns known in modern times was Jim White, a young local cowboy who, in the early 20th century, was drawn by the huge cloud of bats he saw pouring out of a hole in the desert floor at dusk. White explored the cave on his own, working his way into its depths with crude lamps, and became its great promoter and guide, naming many of its rooms and formations.
Before becoming a tourist attraction, the caverns had a curious economic use: the extraction of guano, the accumulated droppings of generations of bats, which was sold as a highly prized fertilizer for the fields of California. For years the cave's guano was mined. Little by little, though, the idea gained ground that such an extraordinary place should be protected and shown to the public rather than exploited, which would open the way to its becoming a national park.
Official recognition came in the first decades of the 20th century. After reports and explorations confirmed the scale and beauty of the caverns —including the photographs that introduced the place to the wider public—, the US government declared Carlsbad Cave National Monument in 1923. A few years later, in 1930, its status was raised and Carlsbad Caverns National Park was created, managed by the National Park Service.
Through the 20th century the infrastructure that makes today's visit possible was developed: paved trails, lighting, and the installation of elevators that descend more than 200 meters to the Big Room directly from the surface, making access easier for those who cannot or do not want to walk down through the natural entrance. Many additional kilometers of passages were also explored and mapped, including nearby Lechuguilla Cave, one of the deepest and most pristine caves in the country, reserved for research.
In 1995, UNESCO inscribed Carlsbad Caverns National Park on the World Heritage list, in recognition of its exceptional geological value and its uncommon sulfuric-acid origin. Today the park protects not only the spectacular underground world but also the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem on the surface and the enormous bat colony whose mass exit at dusk was, in a way, what drew attention to the cave in the first place.
One of the region's great recent scientific milestones came in 1986, when a team of cavers, after years of digging in a small pit that had been known since the early 20th century, broke through into a completely new system of galleries: Lechuguilla Cave. What had looked like a minor cave turned out to be one of the deepest and most extensive in the United States, with more than 240 km of mapped passages and gypsum and sulfur formations unique in the world, further evidence of the same sulfuric-acid dissolution process that gave rise to the Carlsbad caverns. Because it is so extremely fragile, Lechuguilla remains closed to the general public and reserved almost exclusively for scientific research.
In parallel, the National Park Service professionalized the management of the Big Room and the guided tours, introducing online booking systems (recreation.gov) in recent decades to cap the number of daily visitors and protect both the formations and the experience of those walking through the cave. The colony of Brazilian free-tailed bats, which can exceed half a million individuals in the busiest months, is still closely monitored by rangers, who also watch for threats such as white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that decimated bat colonies in eastern North America.
Today Carlsbad Caverns combines its World Heritage status with an active role in caving and biological research, while continuing to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year who go down to walk among formations that took hundreds of thousands of years to grow, drop by drop, in the darkness of the Chihuahuan Desert.
