Genovesa, at the far northeastern end of the Galápagos archipelago, is known as the 'Bird Island' for its huge and spectacular seabird colonies. It is one of the best birdwatching destinations in the world: thousands of frigatebirds nest here, along with red-footed boobies (the largest colony in the archipelago), Nazca boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, tropicbirds and petrels, in a concentration that takes your breath away.
Its shape gives away its origin: Genovesa is a partly collapsed volcanic caldera, which has created Darwin Bay (Bahía Darwin), a horseshoe of calm water ringed by cliffs where the boats anchor. Picture an island where the birds don't flee. Where you can walk among thousands of frigatebirds inflating red balloons on their chests, pass within a metre of red-footed boobies nesting in the shrubs and watch an owl hunt in broad daylight, something it does almost nowhere else in the world. That island exists, it is called Genovesa and it lies so far out, at the northeastern edge of the Galápagos, that getting there means sailing overnight. The reward is one of the most overwhelming bird spectacles on the planet.
Genovesa is a volcanic island at the far northeastern end of the Galápagos archipelago, well away from the central islands. Its defining geological feature is that it is formed by a volcanic caldera: a great collapse crater that, partly caving in towards the sea, gave rise to Darwin Bay (Bahía Darwin), an almost circular, sheltered bay ringed by cliffs, which is the main access point to the island.
The name 'Genovesa' evokes Genoa, the Italian city that tradition holds was the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, in line with other place names in the archipelago that recall the discoverer and the enterprise of reaching America. In English it is also known as Tower Island.
Relatively low-lying and isolated, Genovesa never had permanent human settlements and never suffered the mass introduction of invasive species that devastated other islands. That combination of isolation and absence of human impact has kept it one of the most pristine and impressive bird sanctuaries in the whole of the Galápagos.
The nickname 'Bird Island' sums up the natural importance of Genovesa. Few places in the world hold a density and diversity of seabirds like this island. Its cliffs, its lava plateau and its stands of palo santo shelter colonies of magnificent and great frigatebirds —whose males inflate a spectacular red pouch in courtship season—, one of the largest red-footed booby colonies in the archipelago, Nazca boobies, red-billed tropicbirds, Galápagos petrels and the swallow-tailed gull, the only gull in the world with nocturnal habits.
On top of that richness comes a singular predator: the Galápagos short-eared owl, which on Genovesa, with no Galápagos hawk around, hunts even by day, taking advantage of the petrel colonies, an unusual behaviour that makes it especially easy to watch.
The wildlife's trust in humans —the result of the historic absence of land predators and of people— allows close, unforgettable observation. For all these reasons, Genovesa is a star destination for ornithologists and nature lovers, protected within Galápagos National Park and the Marine Reserve, with strictly regulated access to preserve its extraordinary balance.
Although Genovesa never had inhabitants, its position at the far northeastern end of the archipelago made it a landmark for sailors crossing these waters. On the old English nautical charts it appears as Tower Island, for the walled look of its cliffs seen from the sea, while the Spanish name Genovesa honours Genoa, the city tradition points to as the cradle of Christopher Columbus.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, buccaneers and whalers worked their way through the Galápagos, but Genovesa, with no accessible fresh water and no giant tortoises to hunt, stayed clear of the intensive exploitation other islands suffered. That relative human indifference, together with its isolation, turned out to be its greatest good fortune: the island escaped the introduction of the goats, pigs and rats that devastated its neighbours.
From the 19th century on, naturalists and scientific expeditions —such as that of the California Academy of Sciences in the early 20th century— took an interest in its exceptional birdlife. Later, scientists from the Charles Darwin Research Station made Genovesa a key site for the study of seabirds and of evolutionary phenomena: in its Darwin's finches, for example, famous cases of evolution observable in real time have been documented, studied over decades by field researchers.
In 1959, a hundred years after the publication of 'On the Origin of Species', Ecuador declared 97% of the archipelago's land surface a national park, and in 1978 UNESCO put the islands on the first World Heritage list; in 1986 the Galápagos Marine Reserve was created as well, one of the largest in the world. Genovesa was thus doubly protected, on land and at sea, which is crucial for an island whose life depends entirely on the ocean around it.
Park management restricts access to Genovesa to two visitor sites —Darwin Bay and Prince Philip's Steps— and only in the company of authorised naturalist guides, with limited quotas of visitors and boats, marked trails and strict rules of behaviour around the wildlife. Since the island has no jetty and no infrastructure, every landing is done by panga (a tender), and its remoteness keeps visitor numbers relatively low compared with the central islands.
That rigorous protection, combined with the historic absence of invasive species, has allowed Genovesa to keep one of the most spectacular and intact seabird assemblages on the planet. Today it is a destination reserved mostly for northern-itinerary cruises and for ornithologists, an edge of the archipelago where nature is still in charge and where the visitor experiences the wildest, most pristine Galápagos, just as the first naturalists found it.
Behind the bird spectacle, Genovesa holds a decisive chapter of modern science. It was here, on this remote island, that the biologist Rosemary Grant developed from 1978 onwards her research on the Genovesa cactus finch (Geospiza conirostris), one of the famous 'Darwin's birds'. Together with her husband Peter Grant, she did intensive field work on Genovesa for some ten years, individually tagging the finches, measuring their beaks and following their fate generation after generation.
What the Grants demonstrated changed biology: that evolution by natural selection is not only a process of the remote past, but something that can be measured in real time, within a single human lifetime. In drought years, when soft seeds were scarce, the finches with bigger beaks survived, able to crack the hard seeds; in rainy years, the advantage was reversed. On Genovesa they even documented populations with males that sang different songs and had beaks of different sizes, a window onto the way species are born. That work, begun partly on this island, earned them worldwide recognition and cemented the Galápagos as the great living laboratory of evolution that Charles Darwin sensed in 1835.
The visitor walking Darwin Bay today or climbing Prince Philip's Steps is walking, without knowing it, through an open-air classroom of evolutionary theory. Every booby that doesn't move off the trail, every frigatebird courting a few metres away and every finch pecking among the palo santo is a reminder of why these islands changed our understanding of life for good. Keeping Genovesa intact is not only about saving a landscape full of birds: it is about protecting one of the few places in the world where evolution can still be read with the naked eye.
