The Tatacoa Desert is one of the most surprising landscapes in Colombia: an arid expanse in Huila, in the Magdalena river valley, where erosion has sculpted labyrinths of earth in reddish and grey tones that look like they belong on another planet. Its other great claim to fame comes from the sky. Far from the light pollution of the cities and with a dry, clear atmosphere much of the year, the Tatacoa is one of the best places in Colombia for stargazing. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
When Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada crossed these lands in the 16th century, he christened them 'the valley of sorrows': a parched, hostile, impossible place. Almost five centuries later, that same spot the conquistadors loathed is one of the most sought-after destinations in Colombia, and for a reason they could never have imagined: its sky. At night, with not a single city to pollute it, the Tatacoa Desert becomes one of the country's best windows onto the universe, the Milky Way stretched from horizon to horizon. But the Tatacoa's story begins much earlier, and underground.
The Tatacoa Desert, despite its name, is not a desert in the strict sense but a tropical dry forest, one of the most arid, fragile and threatened ecosystems in Colombia. It spreads across the upper valley of the Magdalena river, in the department of Huila, in a zone of scant rainfall and high temperatures, where vegetation adapted to dryness —columnar cacti, thorny scrub, dry-forest trees— shares the ground with stretches of bare earth.
What makes the landscape so spectacular is erosion. Over millions of years, the water of sporadic rains and the wind have carved the soft earth into labyrinths of gullies, furrows, columns and formations concentrated in two sectors of very different color: the Cuzco sector, in reddish and ochre tones (the 'red desert'), and the Los Hoyos sector, greyish and almost lunar (the 'grey desert'). That erosive geology, combined with the dryness, gives the place its look of a landscape from another planet.
The tropical dry forest ecosystem is of enormous ecological value precisely because it is so scarce: few well-preserved remnants are left in Colombia or anywhere else. The Tatacoa is home to a particular flora and fauna, adapted to extreme conditions, and represents a natural heritage that needs protecting against the pressures of climate and human activity.
Beneath the Tatacoa's arid landscape lies one of the most valuable archives of the past in South America. The area known as La Venta is one of the richest paleontological sites on the continent, celebrated for the abundance and quality of its middle Miocene fossil fauna, roughly 12 to 13 million years old.
In that remote time the region was not a desert but a warm, humid, lush environment, with rivers, forests and abundant life. The fossils found at La Venta reveal a world populated by mammals, giant reptiles, turtles, crocodiles, fish, birds and enormous rodents, as well as prehistoric primates, which have allowed scientists to reconstruct South American fauna of that era in detail. Because of its importance, La Venta is a world reference site for the study of Neogene faunal evolution in South America.
Some of these finds are conserved and displayed at the Museo Paleontológico de Villavieja, the town that serves as gateway to the desert. Visiting it adds a fascinating dimension to the experience: grasping that today's arid, almost lunar landscape was, millions of years ago, a world teeming with life, and that the very erosion that sculpted the desert is what has been laying its fossils bare.
The origin of the name 'Tatacoa' is usually traced to the era of the Spanish conquest. According to tradition, the conquistadors who traveled the Magdalena valley named the area after a snake (a type of local rattlesnake), an animal that abounded in the arid country. The chronicler Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, who crossed the region in the 16th century, is said to have described these lands as a 'valley of sorrows' for their desolate look and extreme climate. The exact etymology admits several versions, as happens with many colonial place names.
For centuries the Tatacoa was hard country for human life, because of its heat and its dryness, but in recent decades that same extreme character has become its greatest virtue. The dry atmosphere, the clear skies for much of the year and the absence of large cities nearby —and therefore of light pollution— made the desert one of the best places in Colombia for astronomical observation.
So the Tatacoa became an astrotourism destination: observatories were set up, astronomers and enthusiasts arrived, and events and festivals for watching the stars were organized. Today the desert the conquistadors saw as a valley of sorrows is celebrated for its starry nights, its Milky Way visible to the naked eye and its deep sky. That double identity —arid landscape by day, window onto the cosmos by night— is what makes the Tatacoa such a singular destination.
Before the Spanish arrived, the upper Magdalena valley was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, among them communities related to the groups of the upper Magdalena and, further south, the influence of the Agustinian culture of San Agustín. These populations made use of the great river's banks for fishing, farming and exchange, in a territory that, despite the aridity of the Tatacoa, offered resources close to the water.
Present-day Villavieja, gateway to the desert, has colonial origins. The settlement took shape in the Spanish period beside the Magdalena river, one of the great communication arteries of New Granada, along which goods, travelers and news moved between the Andean interior and the Caribbean coast. The chapel of Santa Bárbara de Villavieja, one of the oldest religious buildings in Huila, bears witness to that era and today houses, fittingly, the paleontology museum that guards the La Venta fossils.
For centuries the region's economy revolved around extensive cattle ranching —goat, today the area's emblematic dish, is an heir to that tradition— and farming adapted to dryness. The aridity that made daily life difficult kept the Tatacoa relatively unpopulated and off the main circuits, preserving its landscape until nature tourism and astrotourism put it on the map.
In recent decades the Tatacoa has gone from being a forgotten corner of Huila to one of the best-known natural destinations in Colombia. The engine of that change was, above all, its sky. The setting up of astronomical observatories —the Observatorio Astronómico de la Tatacoa, driven by science communicators and astronomers, and others such as Astrosur— established the desert as the country's astrotourism capital, with night observation sessions, star festivals and astronomy events that draw visitors from around the world.
Astronomical fame brought development, but also challenges. The growth of tourism, the building of lodgings and the increase in artificial lighting threaten precisely what makes the Tatacoa unique: the darkness of its sky. That's why authorities, observatories and communities have pushed initiatives to reduce light pollution and protect the quality of the night sky, in line with international recommendations on 'dark sky reserves'.
At the same time, awareness is growing of the fragility of the tropical dry forest and the need for responsible tourism: sticking to the trails, not damaging the gullies or the cacti, caring for water —a scarce resource— and supporting local guides and small businesses. The Tatacoa's recent history is, to a large degree, the story of a balance still being built between the tourist use of an extraordinary landscape and the conservation of its natural value and its starry sky for future generations.
