The Columbia Icefield is the largest mass of ice in the Canadian Rockies: a vast ice sheet, fed by high-altitude snowfall, straddling Jasper and Banff national parks on the border between Alberta and British Columbia. Several glaciers flow down from it, and it's one of the few places in the world where the meltwater ends up draining towards three different oceans. The most accessible and most famous of its glaciers is the Athabasca, which reaches almost to the edge of the road.
The Athabasca Glacier is the star of the show for visitors: a descending tongue of ice you can look out over from the road and walk on, either on guided tours in special big-wheeled vehicles (the 'Ice Explorers') or on guided hikes. You get here along the Icefields Parkway, one of the most spectacular scenic routes in the world, linking Lake Louise with Jasper among peaks, glaciers and turquoise lakes.

One clarification for anyone in doubt: although the town of Jasper suffered a serious fire in July 2024, the Icefields Parkway, the Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca Glacier and the major viewpoints are all fully open and operating in 2026. The town of Jasper has also been rebuilt and is running with hotels, restaurants and services; you can visit the area entirely as normal (verified July 2026).

Picture a single snowflake falling on the summits of the Columbia Icefield. Depending on where it lands — a matter of a few metres — its water will end up in one of three different oceans: the Arctic, the Pacific or, by way of far-off Hudson Bay, the Atlantic. This corner of the Rocky Mountains is one of the very few triple hydrological divides on the planet, a point where the continent's waters split and take courses that carry them thousands of kilometres apart. That geographical oddity is only the beginning of a much older story.
The Columbia Icefield is the largest ice sheet in the Canadian Rockies, straddling what are now Banff and Jasper national parks, on the boundary between Alberta and British Columbia. It's a living remnant of the great glaciations that covered much of North America and shaped the relief of the Rockies, carving valleys, polishing summits and leaving lakes and moraines in their wake. It's fed by heavy snowfall at altitude, which compacts year after year until it becomes glacial ice, and from that enormous reserve several glaciers flow down towards the valleys: the Athabasca, the Dome and the Saskatchewan, among others.
For millennia this high-mountain region remained practically inaccessible, known to the Indigenous peoples of the Rockies and, later, explored by mountaineers and scientists who gradually mapped its ice. Its preservation was secured when it was taken into Canada's national park system: Banff, created in 1885 as the country's first, and Jasper, established in 1907.
What turned the Columbia Icefield into one of the great attractions of the Rockies was the building of the road we know today as the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93). This scenic route links Lake Louise, in the south, with Jasper, in the north, crossing a spectacular landscape of peaks, glaciers, turquoise lakes and waterfalls, and it passes right at the foot of the Athabasca Glacier.
The opening of the road, completed around the middle of the 20th century, made a glacier that had previously been reachable only by mountaineers accessible to ordinary visitors for the first time. The Athabasca Glacier, whose tongue of ice comes down almost to the edge of the road, thus became the most visited on the continent. Tours out onto the ice soon developed, first with rudimentary vehicles and later with the big specially wheeled vehicles (the 'Ice Explorers' or 'Snocoaches'), which let crowds stand safely on the glacier's surface.
Over the decades the site added infrastructure: a visitor centre (the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre), a lodge and, more recently, the glass panoramic walkway of the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, suspended over the valley. The Icefields Parkway, for its part, established itself as one of the most celebrated tourist routes in the world, driven every year by crowds of travellers.
Beyond its beauty, the Athabasca Glacier has become one of the most visible pieces of evidence of climate change in Canada. Like many mountain glaciers around the world, it has been retreating markedly for decades: its tongue of ice has shortened noticeably, and its volume and thickness have fallen appreciably over the last century.
The retreat is so obvious that markers have been placed along the access trail to the foot of the glacier showing how far the ice reached in different decades. Walking between those signs, the visitor physically crosses the ground the glacier has uncovered, an experience that makes the effect of global warming tangible and moving.
That's why a visit to the Columbia Icefield has taken on strong educational value: the guides and the interpretive centres explain not only the geology and the formation of glaciers but also the melting under way and its consequences for the region's water resources. The glacier you can stand on today is, in a sense, a natural monument in the process of disappearing, and that adds a dimension of urgency and reflection to one of the most striking experiences in the Canadian Rockies.
Although the Indigenous peoples of the Rockies had known these mountains since time immemorial, the Columbia Icefield remained unknown to the Western world until the end of the 19th century. It was 'discovered' for European science in 1898 by the British mountaineers John Norman Collie and Hermann Woolley, who climbed Mount Athabasca and, from its summit, gazed in astonishment at the immense, until then unmapped, expanse of the icefield. Collie compared the sight to a sea of ice fading into the horizon.
The name 'Columbia' comes from nearby Mount Columbia, the second-highest summit in the Canadian Rockies, which in turn takes its name from the Columbia River, whose waters rise partly from this icefield. The Athabasca Glacier and the river of the same name, by contrast, carry a name of Cree origin ('athapaskaw', 'where there are reeds' or 'where the reeds cross'), a reflection of the Indigenous presence throughout the region.
In the following decades, mountaineers, surveyors and guides — many of them Swiss, hired by the Canadian Pacific railway company — systematically explored and mapped the area, opening climbing routes to its summits. That golden age of mountaineering in the Rockies made the Columbia Icefield a legendary objective for climbers, long before the road opened it up to mass tourism.
The Columbia Icefield isn't only a tourist attraction: it's also a valuable natural laboratory for science. For decades glaciologists and climatologists have studied the dynamics of mountain glaciers here, measuring year after year the mass balance of the Athabasca Glacier — the difference between the snow that accumulates in winter and the ice lost in summer. Those records, among the longest in North America, document with precision the sustained loss of ice over the last few generations.
The icefield's importance goes beyond the symbolic. Its glaciers feed rivers — the Athabasca, the North Saskatchewan, the Columbia — on which ecosystems, cities and agriculture across vast regions of Canada and the United States depend. Shrinking this reserve of frozen water therefore has practical consequences for millions of people in the long run.
Today Parks Canada and the tour operators try to balance visitor access with the protection of a fragile environment. The experience of standing on the glacier comes more and more with a message of awareness. The future of the Columbia Icefield, like that of so many glaciers around the world, is tied to global emissions, which gives this wonder of the Rockies a relevance that goes beyond tourism: it's a natural spectacle and a warning at the same time.
