Some places seem to belong to another time, and Torotoro National Park is one of them. In the north of the department of Potosí, though you reach it from Cochabamba, hides one of the most astonishing corners of Bolivia: a land of folded, sculpted rock where the Earth shows its insides and its most remote past. Canyons with dizzying walls, caves that sink into the dark, rocks that trace impossible cities and, above all, the footprints of the giants that walked here more than 60 million years ago: the dinosaurs.
The park surrounds the small, quiet village of Toro Toro, a Quechua-rooted place with friendly people that works as the base for every excursion. The walks set out from there —always with local guides, which are compulsory— toward the dinosaur tracks, the imposing Torotoro Canyon and the El Vergel waterfall, the deep Umajalanta cave (the deepest in Bolivia, with its stalactites and its blind fish) and the surprising 'Ciudad de Itas', a maze of rock formations that looks carved by a lost civilization.

The history of Torotoro is, above all, a geological history measured in millions of years. The park's rocks, folded and lifted by the collision of the plates that raised the Andes, hold an extraordinary record of the Earth's past: on what tens of millions of years ago were the muddy shores of ancient lakes and seas, dinosaurs left their tracks, which time turned to stone. Today those ichnites (fossilized footprints) make Torotoro one of the most important paleontological sites in South America. The region was inhabited from pre-Hispanic times by Quechua peoples, and it also keeps traces of that human past, such as rock paintings and ruins. The village of Toro Toro grew as a small farming and herding community of the valleys, relatively isolated by the rugged geography. To protect this unique heritage —geological, paleontological and natural—, the Bolivian state created Torotoro National Park in 1989, today run under the country's protected areas system (SERNAP). Origins, formation and what the sources say.
In barely 16,570 hectares —Torotoro is Bolivia's smallest national park— you get more than 3,500 dinosaur tracks, the deepest cave in the country and layers of rock standing on end like the pages of a book flung wide open. Few places on the planet pack so much deep time into so little space. And yet the history of Torotoro begins long before any human history: it begins in the 'deep time' of geology, measured here in tens and hundreds of millions of years. What is today a land of canyons, ranges and dry valleys in the north of the department of Potosí, in central Bolivia, was in remote ages a region of very different settings —plains, muddy shores, ancient bodies of water— where sediments were laid down layer on layer and in time turned to rock.
The great event that shaped today's landscape was the rise of the Andes. The collision of the tectonic plates that produced the longest mountain chain in the world folded, fractured and tilted those layers of sedimentary rock that had lain horizontal. That is why one of Torotoro's most characteristic sights is rock strata standing almost vertical, like the pages of an open stone book, especially visible on the walls of the Torotoro Canyon.
To that work of tectonics was added, over millennia, the patient action of water and erosion, which cut canyons, shaped the strange formations of the 'Ciudad de Itas' and dissolved the limestone to create the Umajalanta cave system. The result is one of the most extraordinary and instructive geological landscapes in Bolivia: a place where the Earth itself puts its structure and its history on open display, and where the traces of the life that filled these places millions of years ago were also laid bare.
The most famous chapter of Torotoro's prehistory is the dinosaurs. Tens of millions of years ago, during the Cretaceous period, this region held settings very different from today's: stretches of plain and muddy shore beside ancient bodies of water, with a climate and vegetation belonging to that lost world. Numerous dinosaurs of various kinds walked through that mud, pressing their footprints into the soft ground.
Under particular conditions, that track-marked mud dried, was covered by new sediments and, over geological time, hardened into rock, preserving the prints as fossils. Later the rise of the Andes tilted those layers and erosion uncovered them again. So what we see today as thousands of fossilized dinosaur tracks (technically 'ichnites') on the rock is the direct record of those giant animals passing through.
These tracks make Torotoro one of the most important paleontological sites in Bolivia and in South America: more than 3,500 footprints have been recorded, attributed to around 21 different types of dinosaur. Specialists identify traces from different groups —large four-legged sauropods, two-legged carnivorous theropods, ornithopods, ankylosaurs and even ceratopsids—, told apart by the shape, size and arrangement of the prints; some trackways run for tens of meters, making it possible to reconstruct the gait of a single animal. Alongside the tracks, the region holds other fossils —such as the 'turtle graveyard' and marine remains— that round out the portrait of a past in which this high, dry land was filled with radically different creatures and environments. Walking among these tracks is, literally, following in the footsteps of the dinosaurs.
Long after the dinosaurs, but also a very long time ago, these valleys and ranges were inhabited by human beings. The Torotoro region was settled from pre-Hispanic times by Andean communities, Quechua-rooted and, at different moments, tied to the cultures that dominated the central Andes. These peoples adapted to a setting of rugged geography, farming in the valleys and herding on the heights.
Of that ancient human presence, traces remain scattered across the park, above all rock art: paintings and engravings on overhangs and rock faces (some in the area of the Ciudad de Itas and its surroundings), whose figures connect to the beliefs, rituals and everyday life of those communities. These traces, along with other archaeological remains in the region, speak of a long relationship between Andean peoples and this singular landscape.
With Inca expansion and, later, the Spanish conquest and the colonial period, the region was drawn into the wider Andean world, although its broken geography kept it relatively isolated and rural. The village of Toro Toro grew as a small farming and herding community of the valleys, keeping its Quechua language and its traditions. That cultural continuity reaches to this day: the Quechua community living in Toro Toro is heir to that long history and, today, plays the leading part in caring for and running the park.
Beneath the surface of Torotoro hides another world, as astonishing as the tracks and the canyons: the caves. The most famous is the Umajalanta cave, the deepest and most extensive known cave in Bolivia, with some 4,600 meters of explored galleries and a drop of around 164 meters below the surface. About 8 kilometers from the village of Toro Toro, its origin is geological too: water, over thousands of years, dissolved the limestone and carved galleries, halls and passages into the belly of the mountain, in a process typical of karst landscapes. Its entrance, some 20 meters high by 30 wide, literally swallows a river that runs off into the darkness.
The name 'Umajalanta' comes from the Andean languages of the region (Quechua and Aymara roots) and is usually translated as 'the water that sinks' or 'that gets lost' underground, a very apt description of the watercourses that disappear into the cave. Inside it, patient dripping and the chemistry of water have built a forest of stalactites, stalagmites and columns in whimsical shapes, natural sculptures that keep growing, millimeter by millimeter, across the centuries.
But the most fascinating thing about Umajalanta is the life it shelters in its permanent darkness. In its underground waters lives an endemic blind fish, the cave catfish Trichomycterus chaberti —whitish and about 10 centimeters long—, identified by the explorer J. Chabert in 1966: by evolving over generations in the total absence of light, it lost its eyes and its pigment, an extraordinary example of biological adaptation. Bats and other cave fauna live there too. Pushing into Umajalanta —with a helmet, a torch and a guide, crawling and climbing through its passages— is a genuine adventure and an encounter with a hidden, one-off ecosystem, another of the reasons Torotoro earns its reputation as an exceptional park.
Torotoro's extraordinary value —geological, paleontological, speleological and natural— made the need to protect it clear in time. The dinosaur tracks, the caves, the canyons and the region's ecosystems are an irreplaceable heritage, vulnerable to decay, vandalism or uncontrolled exploitation. To safeguard it, the Bolivian state created Torotoro National Park on 26 July 1989, through Supreme Decree 22269, giving it the legal status of a national protected area over a surface of some 16,570 hectares.
Despite being Bolivia's smallest national park by area, Torotoro concentrates an exceptional density of natural and scientific draws —dinosaur tracks, caves, canyons, rock art and hundreds of species of flora and fauna—, which makes it a jewel of the country's protected areas system. Today it is run by SERNAP (the National Protected Areas Service), the body in charge of Bolivia's parks and reserves, in coordination with local authorities and the local population.
One of the most notable features of the Torotoro model is the strong involvement of the Toro Toro community in tourism and conservation. The system of compulsory local guides —organized in an association— serves a double purpose: keeping visitors safe on rough ground (canyons, caves, heights) and protecting the heritage, preventing damage to the tracks, the formations and the archaeological sites. At the same time, tourism has become an important source of income and of pride for the villagers. So the more recent history of Torotoro is one of a balance sought between conserving a unique natural treasure and the development of a small Quechua community that looks after it and shares it with the world.
