📍Region
Genoa (Genova in Italian, Zena in Genoese) is the capital of the Liguria region and of the metropolitan city of the same name, in north-western Italy. It sits on a narrow strip between the Ligurian Sea and the Apennines, so the city climbs in terraces from the port up into the hills, linked by public lifts, funiculars and stairways. According to Wikipedia, the municipality has about 566.000 inhabitants (2026 figure) and is the sixth-largest in Italy by population. It was the capital of the Republic of Genoa, one of the great maritime powers of the Mediterranean between the 11th century and 1797, which is why Petrarch called it 'la Superba'. Today it is known for three things: its medieval old town, a maze of alleys (the caruggi) often cited as one of the largest in Europe; the Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2006; and the Porto Antico, redesigned by Renzo Piano for Expo 1992, home to the Aquarium. It is also the city of pesto, focaccia and farinata, and the gateway to the Riviera: Camogli, Portofino and the Cinque Terre are a train or boat ride away.
📌Currency and payments
Euro (€). The civic museums, the Aquarium and AMT sell tickets online, and AMT also has an app and the ILA contactless system for paying fares. Still, it is worth carrying some cash: there are small trattorias and sciamadde (the farinata and fried-food takeaway shops) where you pay in hand, and food guides mention the odd trattoria that only takes cash. Also bear in mind the tourist tax, which is paid separately at your accommodation.
📌Best time to go
Genoa has a Mediterranean climate on the coast, with little temperature difference between day and night. Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking the climbs. According to Kayak, January is the cheapest month for accommodation and September the most expensive. From 16 to 18 October 2026 are the Rolli Days, with special visits to the Palazzi dei Rolli. Watch out for autumn weather alerts: with a red alert from Civil Protection the civic museums close, and the Lanterna also closes with an orange alert or strong wind.
📌Base city
Genoa itself has everything. Cristoforo Colombo airport is to the west, in Sestri Ponente, and connects to the centre via AMT's Volabus (about 30 minutes to Brignole and Principe) or the Genova Airlink bus to Sestri Ponente train station. The two main stations are Piazza Principe, next to the old town, and Brignole, in the modern area. GNV ferries leave from the port, among other destinations to Barcelona. From Genoa you can do day trips to Nervi, Camogli, San Fruttuoso, Portofino and the Cinque Terre.

Genoa doesn't give itself away on the first block. You arrive in a port city, with elevated motorways, cranes and tall buildings, and suddenly you step into a two-metre-wide alley that drops you into a medieval square or the courtyard of a frescoed palace. That contrast is its charm: it is a working city, not a postcard, so you walk it with a different kind of curiosity. For visitors from Latin America there is an extra link: the city has a National Museum of Italian Emigration, and the Galata devotes rooms to the subject.
What you appreciate most is how many good things you can do while spending little. Going up to the Castelletto viewpoint costs the same as a lift ticket. Wandering the caruggi, stepping into San Lorenzo Cathedral, walking Via Garibaldi or heading down to Boccadasse for the sunset costs nothing. And for food, a slice of focaccia or farinata from a bakery in the centre sorts out lunch. Expensive things exist, like the Aquarium, but they are a choice.
Genoa is also a practical base. With regional trains and boats you can reach Camogli, the abbey of San Fruttuoso, Portofino or the Cinque Terre in a day, and come back to sleep at more reasonable prices than on the Riviera. Give the city at least three days and add one or two for the coast. Bring comfortable shoes: everything here goes up and down, and part of the fun is discovering which lift or stairway saves you the climb.
📖 History of Genoa
The first human traces in the area come from a Neolithic settlement near Brignole, dating from the 5th and 4th millennia BC. The city was probably born as a Ligurian oppidum on Castello hill, above the ancient port, in the early 5th century BC, and even then it was known as 'the emporium of the Ligurians' for its trade. After the Roman period and the Early Middle Ages, the free commune that would become the Republic of Genoa emerged in the 11th century. San Lorenzo Cathedral was consecrated in 1118, and in 1339 the first doge, Simone Boccanegra, was elected, giving the Ducal Palace its name. For centuries Genoa dominated trade, with colonies from the Black Sea to the Aegean; the Bank of San Giorgio, founded in 1407, is considered the oldest known state deposit bank. In the 16th century the aristocracy opened the Strada Nuova (1550) and set up the Rolli system, the lists of private palaces required to host state visitors. In 1797 the republic was replaced by the Ligurian Republic, tied to revolutionary France, and in 1805 it was annexed to the Napoleonic Empire. The Congress of Vienna handed it to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815, and from 1861 it was the great port of the Kingdom of Italy, with shipyards and steelworks. In 1926 'Greater Genoa' was created by merging 19 neighbouring municipalities. It was bombed in the Second World War and liberated itself through an uprising in April 1945. The post-war boom was followed by the industrial crisis of the 1970s and 1980s. In 1992 the Expo marking 500 years since Columbus's voyage renewed the Porto Antico; in 2004 it was European Capital of Culture, and in 2006 Unesco inscribed the Strade Nuove. On 14 August 2018 the Morandi bridge collapsed, killing 43 people; the new bridge, designed by Renzo Piano, opened in 2020.

Genoa Aquarium (Acquario di Genova)
Italy's largest aquarium, in the Porto Antico: sharks, penguins, seals and manatees along a route through three pavilions.
Leer más ↓
The Aquarium opened in 1992 as part of the Porto Antico renewal for the Columbus Expo, designed by Renzo Piano. It welcomes more than 1,2 million visitors a year and houses some 10.000 specimens of over 400 animal and 200 plant species, across about 12.000 m² recreating environments from the tropics to Antarctica and from the Mediterranean to wetlands.
The route runs through three pavilions of two levels each, connected and accessible. Among the most popular spots are the Shark Bay, the Moray Eel Grotto and the penguin, seal and manatee tanks.
It is the most expensive ticket in the city, so decide beforehand whether it is worth it for you. With kids, it almost always is. It opens 365 days a year from 9 to 20, with last entry at 18. The lowest price is the fixed-date ticket bought online; the 'Open Flexi' costs more but lets you change the day. If you want to add the Bigo and the Biosfera, the PianetAcquario combo works out cheaper than buying them separately. Arrive early at weekends and on public holidays.
ℹ️ Distance: In the Porto Antico, facing the old town · Best time to go: All year; fewer people on weekdays · Admission: Fixed date online from € 26 adult; ages 4-12 from € 16; over-65s, military and people with disabilities from € 20; ages 0-3 free; Open Flexi € 38 (source: acquariodigenova.it, verified October 2026). Via Garibaldi and Musei di Strada Nuova (Palazzi dei Rolli, Unesco)
The street of Renaissance palaces, a Unesco World Heritage Site, with three of them turned into museums: Palazzo Rosso, Bianco and Tursi.
Leer más ↓
Via Garibaldi was born in 1550 as the Strada Nuova, a showcase street for the Republic's wealthiest families. It is straight, on a gentle slope, 250 metres long and 7,5 wide, and was lined with palaces from the start. Rubens studied these buildings, and his drawings helped spread the style across northern Europe. Since 13 July 2006 it has been part of the Unesco site 'Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli', which includes 42 palaces.
Three of them make up the Musei di Strada Nuova: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi, with Genoese, Flemish and Venetian painting, and in Tursi, Paganini's violins. The combined ticket also includes the Museum of Sant'Agostino.
From 28 September 2026 they open every day from 10 to 18:30; on Mondays only Palazzo Rosso opens. The lift at Palazzo Rosso is out of order, so you have to take the stairs. The street itself is free to walk, and many courtyards can be seen from the pavement. During the Rolli Days the museum can only be visited with a booking and a guided tour.
ℹ️ Distance: In the old town, near Piazza delle Fontane Marose · Best time to go: All year; the Rolli Days are 16 to 18 October 2026 · Admission: Strada Nuova + Sant'Agostino combo € 14; reduced € 9; ages 18 to 25 € 2 (source: museidigenova.it, verified October 2026). The street is free · Duration: 2 to 3 hours with the museums

Old town and caruggi
A medieval maze of narrow alleys between the port and the palaces, with squares, churches, bakeries and neighbourhood markets.
Leer más ↓
Genoa's old town is laid out as a web of medieval alleys, the caruggi, stretching from Carignano hill to Principe station. Its original core, the districts of Prè, Molo and Maddalena, covers 113 hectares, which is why it is cited as the largest ancient old town in Europe.
There is no single route here: the idea is to get lost with the map on your phone. Some street names keep the memory of the streams that now run underground, such as via al Ponte Reale between Piazza Banchi and Piazza Caricamento. Under the Sottoripa arcades, facing the port, are the historic fried-food shops, and around San Giorgio and the Maddalena the sciamadde that bake farinata in wood-fired ovens.
It is free and it is the best way to understand the city. Explore it by day and when there are people around; at night, stick to the busier streets. Many alleys are uphill and have steps, so wear comfortable shoes.
ℹ️ Distance: Between the Porto Antico, Piazza De Ferrari and Principe station · Best time to go: All year, best by day · Admission: Free (public space) · Duration: Half a day at least

Porto Antico and Bigo
The old port redesigned by Renzo Piano for 1992: a waterfront promenade, the Bigo panoramic lift and the glass Biosfera.
Leer más ↓
The Porto Antico was reclaimed for the 1992 Columbus celebrations with a project by Genoese architect Renzo Piano. Today it is a public waterfront promenade with the Aquarium, the Galata Museo del Mare, the Biosfera and the Bigo.
The Bigo, opened on 15 May 1992, is inspired by ships' cargo cranes. Its white steel arms hold up the canopy over Piazza delle Feste and a panoramic lift: the cabin, for up to 30 people, slowly rises to 40 metres while turning 360 degrees, with views over the port, the old town and the hills. A restoration of the structure began in 2025.
Strolling the Porto Antico is free. The Bigo and the Biosfera (a glass sphere containing a tropical ecosystem) are paid separately or in a combo with the Aquarium. At sunset the promenade is lovely for an unhurried walk.
ℹ️ Distance: Facing Piazza Caricamento, steps from the old town · Best time to go: All year; sunset · Admission: Promenade free. Bigo € 6; Biosfera € 6; PianetAcquario (Aquarium + Bigo + Biosfera) € 37 fixed date (source: acquariodigenova.it, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Palazzo Ducale and Torre Grimaldina
The former seat of the Republic's doges, now a cultural centre with art exhibitions, and its medieval tower with old prison cells.
Leer más ↓
The Ducal Palace was the political heart of the Republic. In 1291 the captains of the people bought the buildings where the palace of the Abbots of the People was built, and with the election of the first doge, Simone Boccanegra, in 1339, it came to be called 'ducal'. It was transformed many times, and its restoration was completed for the 1992 Columbus celebrations, when it reopened as a cultural centre.
Today it is run by the Fondazione Palazzo Ducale. In October 2026 it is showing World Press Photo 2026 (25 September to 8 December) and an exhibition of Renoir, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Cézanne from 15 October. Each exhibition has its own ticket.
The Torre Grimaldina, on the west side, predates the palace as part of a private medieval building. Prisons operated on its middle levels from the 16th century, and today it is visited on a tour called 'At the Top', which has its own website. The entrance is at Piazza Matteotti 9, right in the centre.
ℹ️ Distance: Piazza Matteotti 9, in the old town · Best time to go: All year; check the exhibition schedule · Admission: Each exhibition charges separately. With the Genova Museum Card (24 h € 24) you get a reduced rate at Palazzo Ducale exhibitions (source: museidigenova.it, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours per exhibition

San Lorenzo Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Lorenzo)
The city's cathedral, consecrated in 1118, with lions on the steps, a Treasury Museum and the replica of a 1941 shell.
Leer más ↓
The cathedral was built from the 11th century on a former burial ground and enlarged until the 16th century. It was consecrated on 10 October 1118 by Pope Gelasius II, who was passing through the city. In 1840 the staircase was completed with the two white marble lions by sculptor Carlo Rubatto.
Inside, a Second World War story stands out: in the right nave there is a replica of the 381 mm British naval shell that on 9 February 1941 pierced the roof during a bombardment and did not explode. The original shell was defused and dumped at sea.
In the basement is the Treasury Museum, with goldsmith pieces that are few in number but exceptional. It opens Monday to Saturday from 9 to 12 and from 15 to 18; closed on Sundays. There is a combo ticket with the Diocesan Museum. Dress appropriately: it is a working church.
ℹ️ Distance: Piazza San Lorenzo, between Piazza De Ferrari and the port · Best time to go: All year, Monday to Saturday for the Treasury Museum · Admission: Treasury Museum € 5; reduced € 4; over-65s and students € 4; combo with the Diocesan Museum € 10 (source: museidigenova.it, verified October 2026) · Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Spianata Castelletto, lifts and funiculars
Genoa's most famous viewpoint is reached by public lift; the funiculars and the rack railway take you up to the hillside neighbourhoods.
Leer más ↓
Genoa solved its slopes with vertical transport, and using it is an outing in itself. The Castelletto Levante lift climbs 57 metres from Piazza Portello to the Spianata Castelletto, one of Genoa's best-known viewpoints over the centre and the port. It runs every day from 6:40 to 24. The renovated Castelletto Ponente leaves from Galleria Garibaldi with the same hours.
To go higher there is the Zecca-Righi funicular: it leaves from Largo della Zecca, has seven stations and reaches Righi, up in the hills, from 6:40 to 24. The Principe-Granarolo rack railway climbs from the Principe station area. The Sant'Anna funicular is suspended for its mandatory five-yearly inspection.
The lifts and the Sant'Anna use their own cheaper ticket; the Zecca-Righi and the rack railway require the standard city ticket. Go up to Castelletto at sunset and walk down the stairways to the centre.
ℹ️ Distance: Piazza Portello, a few blocks from Via Garibaldi · Best time to go: Sunset and clear days · Admission: Lift or Sant'Anna funicular € 1,20 per ride; 4 rides € 4; Zecca-Righi with city ticket € 2 (source: amt.genova.it, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 hour (Castelletto); 2 to 3 hours if you go up to Righi

Galata Museo del Mare and the Nazario Sauro submarine
The city's maritime museum, with a reconstructed galley, an emigration section and a real submarine moored in the water.
Leer más ↓
The Galata opened in 2004, the year Genoa was European Capital of Culture. It spreads over 5 levels and 31 rooms and tells the story of the city's relationship with the sea since the Middle Ages. There are reconstructions of a 42-metre galley (the Age of Oars), a brigantine (the Age of Sail) and the interiors of a steamship (the Age of Steam), all of which you can go into.
Visitors from Latin America should linger in the section on Italian emigration. Outside, in the dock, the Nazario Sauro is moored, a submarine built in 1976 for the Italian Navy and decommissioned in 2002: you tour the inside wearing a helmet, and it is the only one in Italy that can be visited afloat. Tickets for the submarine alone are not sold.
Until 31 October 2026 it opens every day from 10 to 19; from 1 November to 31 March it is closed on Mondays. There is an audio guide for the submarine for € 1 extra. With kids, the full visit can take around three hours.
ℹ️ Distance: In the Darsena of the Porto Antico · Best time to go: All year; rainy days · Admission: € 19 adult (18-64); reduced € 14 for over-64s and children aged 7 to 17; ages 0-6 free; family (2 adults + 1 minor) € 42; includes the submarine (source: museidigenova.it, verified October 2026) · Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Boccadasse
An old fishing village inside the city, with colourful houses around a cove and a small pebble beach.
Leer más ↓
Boccadasse is an old seafaring borgo in the Albaro district, at the end of Corso Italia, the seafront promenade where the Genoese stroll at weekends. Its pastel houses, packed tightly around a small bay, have survived almost unchanged, and fishermen still work there among ice-cream shops, restaurants and small galleries.
Behind the church of Sant'Antonio, with ex-votos from seafaring folk, is the Edoardo Firpo belvedere, which looks down over the village. You head down by a staircase or by via Aurora, a typical Ligurian crêuza (cobbled lane). Another crêuza climbs to Capo di Santa Chiara, with Gino Coppedè's 1903 Türcke castle and a view over Genoa's eastern coast and the gulf as far as the Portofino promontory.
It is free and it is the classic sunset plan. In summer the little beach gets packed; out of season it is calmer. You can walk there along Corso Italia from the Foce.
ℹ️ Distance: In the Albaro district, at the end of Corso Italia, east of the centre · Best time to go: Sunset; spring and autumn to avoid the summer crowds · Admission: Free (public space) · Duration: 1,5 to 2 hours with the walk along Corso Italia

Staglieno Monumental Cemetery
One of the most important monumental cemeteries in Europe: an open-air sculpture museum in the Bisagno valley.
Leer más ↓
Staglieno is Genoa's main cemetery and, for the number and quality of its funerary monuments, it is considered an open-air museum. The original design was by Carlo Barabino, who died in the cholera epidemic of 1835; it was continued by his pupil Giovanni Battista Resasco. Work began in 1844 and, according to the Comune, it officially opened to the public on 1 January 1851.
Today it covers about 330.000 m² and includes English, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim sections. Buried here are Giuseppe Mazzini, one of the founding fathers of Italy, the composer of the national anthem Michele Novaro, Nino Bixio and Constance Lloyd, Oscar Wilde's wife, and there is a cenotaph to Fabrizio De André. The Appiani tomb was the cover of Joy Division's album Closer.
It opens every day from 7:30 to 17, with entry until half an hour before. It is closed on 1 and 6 January, Easter Monday, 24 June, 15 August and 26 December. The tourist infopoint, on piazzale Resasco, hands out maps Monday to Friday. Be respectful of people visiting their dead.

Lanterna of Genoa (Lanterna di Genova)
The city's symbol, a 77-metre lighthouse, with a walkway above the port, a museum and the climb to the first terrace.
Leer más ↓
The Lanterna is the port lighthouse and the emblem of Genoa. It is 77 metres tall, and its light sits 117 metres above the sea if you count the rock it stands on, which makes it the tallest lighthouse in Italy and in the Mediterranean. It was probably built in 1128 and rebuilt in its current form in 1543. In 1449 one of its keepers was Antonio Colombo, uncle of Christopher Columbus.
The visit starts with a panoramic walk of about 800 metres above the port. It continues through a museum park next to the 17th-century fortifications and the Porta Nuova, and then into the Lanterna Museum at the base. If you pay the extra, you climb 172 steps to the first terrace, the only one open to visitors, with a 360-degree view.
From October to December 2026 it opens Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 18. Take the metro to Dinegro or buses 1, 18, 20 or 32, then walk along the path. It closes during orange or red alerts and in strong wind. The lighthouse extra (€ 3) can only be bought at the ticket office.

Nervi: Anita Garibaldi promenade, parks and museums
The old village on Genoa's eastern shore, with a 1.8 km promenade over the rocks, villa gardens and four art museums.
Leer más ↓
Nervi is the eastern end of the city. The Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi began as a path used by fishermen and farmers. From 1862 the Marquis Gaetano Gropallo turned it into a 1.8 km seafront promenade that starts at Nervi's little harbour and runs along the rocky coast, looking out to the Portofino promontory.
Behind it are the Parchi di Nervi, the gardens of former private villas (Gropallo, Saluzzo Serra, Grimaldi Fassio and Luxoro). They now belong to the Comune and hold more than 100 botanical species and a rose garden. The villas house the Musei di Nervi: the Gallery of Modern Art, the Raccolte Frugone, Villa Luxoro and the Wolfsoniana, with 19th- and 20th-century art.
Take the local train with the integrated AMT-Trenitalia ticket, which is valid as far as Nervi. From 29 September 2026 the GAM opens Tuesday to Sunday from 11 to 17. The combined museum ticket is full price Friday to Sunday and reduced Tuesday to Thursday, so it's worth going on a weekday.
ℹ️ Distance: At the eastern end of the city; reached by local train · Best time to go: Spring (rose garden) and sunny autumn days · Admission: Promenade and parks free. The Palazzo Reale, on Via Balbi, is another of the palaces in the Rolli system listed by Unesco. Today it is a state museum run by the Ministry of Culture, and it ranks among the city's best-known palaces alongside Palazzo Rosso, Bianco and Tursi.
The appeal is seeing one of these palaces with a guide: the guided tour is included in the price, and visitors aged 18 to 25 pay just € 2, the same as at the civic museums. It's a good follow-up to the Musei di Strada Nuova if you still want more palaces after Via Garibaldi.
According to the official website, the guided tour is included in the ticket. Opening hours and closing days are posted in the 'Organizza la tua visita' section of the site, so check them before you go. It's close to Principe station, so you can combine it with the climb to Castello d'Albertis.

Castello d'Albertis - Museum of World Cultures
A neo-Gothic castle above the city, once the home of a travelling sea captain and now the Museum of World Cultures, with views over the port.
Leer más ↓
The Castello d'Albertis is a neo-Gothic castle built for Captain Enrico Alberto D'Albertis, who travelled by sea and land in the 19th and 20th centuries and left the house to the city when he died in 1932. Inside he built his own world: 'cabinets of wonders', seafaring mementoes, tributes to Columbus and colonial trophies.
Today it is the Museum of World Cultures, and the house itself is part of the visit: the captain's cabin, the Turkish room and the view from the tower over the port and the Porto Antico.
From 29 September 2026 it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 18:30, and closes on Mondays that aren't public holidays. To avoid walking up the hill, an AMT lift links Via Balbi, near Principe station, with Corso Dogali, next to the museum. In August, over-65s get in free.

Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino
The classic day trip from Genoa: the tall houses of Camogli, the hidden abbey of San Fruttuoso and the bay of Portofino.
Leer más ↓
East of Genoa, the Portofino promontory has three stops you can combine in a day. Camogli is a fishing village with tall painted houses facing the sea. San Fruttuoso is an abbey in a cove with no road access: you can only get there by boat or on foot by one of two trails, one coming down from Mount Portofino and the other following the coast from Portofino. The current abbey was rebuilt between the late 10th and early 11th centuries, and in the 13th century the Doria family added the wing with a gallery facing the sea. It has belonged to the FAI since 1983. On the seabed of the bay stands the Christ of the Abyss (Cristo degli Abissi), placed there in 1954.
The simplest option is the Golfo Paradiso boat from the Porto Antico, the 'Tour dei 2 Golfi', which stops at Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino. Until 24 October 2026 it leaves the Porto Antico at 14, and from 25 October to 3 January at 11, on certain days only, so check the calendar. Another option is the train to Camogli and the local boat to San Fruttuoso. Bus 782 also runs to Portofino from Santa Margherita Ligure. The boat depends on the sea and is cancelled in bad weather.
ℹ️ Distance: Camogli and Portofino, east of Genoa on the Portofino promontory · Best time to go: Spring and autumn, with a calm sea · Admission: Genoa-Portofino boat return € 26 (half day) or € 29 (full day); Camogli-San Fruttuoso return € 17 (source: golfoparadiso.it, 2026 fares, verified October 2026). The Cinque Terre are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, five villages perched above the sea east of Genoa and listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. In high season the trains and the villages get packed.
The train is the practical way to get between the villages. From 14 March to 1 November 2026 Trenitalia applies the special Cinque Terre fare between Levanto and La Spezia, which changes according to a calendar of A, B or C days (from lowest to highest demand). If you arrive from outside the park on a regional ticket, you pay a supplement. After 19:30 the band A fare applies. There is also the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card, with unlimited second-class travel between Levanto and La Spezia.
From Genoa, Golfo Paradiso runs a direct boat to Monterosso with a three-hour stop, but only from June to September and on specific dates. In October, then, the train is the way to go. Set off early and check the A/B/C calendar before you buy.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa? What are the EES and ETIAS for Latin Americans?+
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay are listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806: their citizens don't need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area, Italy included. If you hold another passport, check on Italy's official visa website or with the consulate. Since 10 April 2026 the EES has been fully operational: on your first entry your fingerprints and photo are recorded, and the system counts your days instead of the passport stamp. ETIAS, a prior online travel authorisation, is still not operational as of October 2026 and the EU has not confirmed a start date. Don't pay for applications on unofficial websites.
How much is the tourist tax in Genoa?+
It is paid at your accommodation, per person per night, and is almost never included in the price on booking websites. According to the specialist press (May 2026), in hotels it ranges from € 2 (1 star) to € 5 (5 stars): 2,50 for 2 stars, 3 for 3 and 4 for 4. In hostels, campsites and agriturismi it is € 2, and in B&Bs, holiday homes and tourist apartments € 3. It is charged for up to 8 consecutive nights and under-14s are exempt. Note: in June 2026 the Comune's Giunta approved raising the tax for non-hotel accommodation and the press mentions up to € 5; it still had to go through the Consiglio. Confirm the amount with your accommodation.
How many days should I stay?+
Three full days are enough to see the essentials. One day for the centre: the caruggi, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, Palazzo Ducale and Via Garibaldi with the Musei di Strada Nuova, and sunset at Castelletto. Another for the Porto Antico: the Aquarium or the Galata, the Bigo and the Lanterna, which in October only opens Friday to Sunday. And a third for Boccadasse, Nervi or Staglieno. If you add one or two more days, spend one on Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino, and another on the Cinque Terre. Bear in mind that many civic museums close on Mondays.
How do I get around? Is it worth renting a car?+
For the city, no. Genoa is best explored on foot, by metro, by bus and with the AMT lifts and funiculars. If you're going to use several modes in a day, the 24-hour MetDaily (€ 10) covers everything, even the airport Volabus and bus 782 to Portofino; otherwise the € 2 ticket for 110 minutes is enough. For Nervi and the west, the urban train with the € 2,20 integrated ticket is the best choice. For Camogli, Santa Margherita and the Cinque Terre the regional train is more practical than a car: in summer, parking on the coast is scarce and expensive.
What about rain and weather alerts?+
In autumn Genoa can get heavy rain, and Liguria's Civil Protection issues colour-coded alerts. On a red alert, civic museums such as those on Strada Nuova, the Galata or the Castello d'Albertis close and events are cancelled. The Lanterna closes even on an orange alert or in strong wind, and boats to Portofino and San Fruttuoso are cancelled in rough seas. Check the forecast the night before and have an indoor plan B, such as the Aquarium or Palazzo Ducale. If you have boat tickets, the company will notify you by SMS or email.
Is Genoa safe to visit?+
Genoa is a large port city and it's worth taking the same precautions as in any capital: keep an eye on your bag and phone on the metro, on crowded buses and in tourist-heavy areas like the Porto Antico. The historic centre is lovely by day, but it has narrow, poorly lit alleys; at night, stick to streets with people and open shops. On the slopes and stairways of the caruggi wear sturdy shoes, especially in the rain, because the stone gets slippery. Keep your accommodation's details and your country's consulate contact information handy.
