Few images sum up surreal Iceland as well as the Blue Lagoon: an enormous pool of milky blue water, steaming, in the middle of a rough black lava field, under a sky that in winter can light up with the aurora. It is without doubt the country's most famous geothermal spa and one of the experiences almost every traveller wants to have at least once. Sinking into its warm water, smearing your face with the white silica mask and letting time pass in the steam is one of those pleasures that justify the trip.
The curious thing is that the Blue Lagoon is not an entirely natural phenomenon: the water comes from the Svartsengi geothermal power station, which uses it to generate energy and then releases it, still rich in silica and minerals, into this lava field. The result was so spectacular — and people started bathing in it in such numbers — that it ended up becoming one of Iceland's great tourist attractions. Today it is a modern, well-kept complex, with a spa, hotels, restaurants and its own cosmetics brand based on the silica, algae and minerals in its water.

The Blue Lagoon did not exist half a century ago: it is, in large part, a fortunate engineering accident. In 1976 the Svartsengi geothermal power station was built nearby, drawing water and steam from the volcanic ground of the Reykjanes peninsula to generate electricity and heating. The used water, still loaded with silica, algae and minerals, was let out into the surrounding lava field. Since silica does not filter well through the porous rock, it formed a pool of a characteristic milky blue. In the early 1980s, some people with skin conditions (especially psoriasis) began bathing there on their own initiative, and noticed improvements. Word of mouth grew, and in 1992 a facility for public bathing officially opened. The Blue Lagoon has not stopped growing since: in 1999 it moved to its current site and building, a dermatological research centre was added, along with a clinic treating psoriasis, a skincare product line and, later, the Silica and The Retreat hotels. Today it is one of the most visited destinations in Iceland. The area is also part of the active Reykjanes volcanic system, which woke in 2021 after centuries of calm, with several eruptions since 2023 (the most recent in July 2025) that have affected neighbouring Grindavík and forced temporary closures of the lagoon itself. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
The story of the Blue Lagoon is, in essence, the story of an industrial by-product that ended up as one of the most celebrated tourist destinations in the world. It all starts on the Reykjanes peninsula, a highly volcanically active area in southwest Iceland, where the heat of the ground has been harnessed for decades to generate energy. In 1976 the Svartsengi geothermal power station came into operation, a plant that extracts high-temperature water and steam from deep in the lava field to produce electricity and hot water for heating.
The water that comes out of the ground in this area is not ordinary fresh water: it is a mixture of seawater and fresh water that has filtered through the volcanic rock and been heated at great depth, picking up minerals, salts, silica (silicon dioxide) and other elements. After passing through the plant and giving up its heat, that used water was released into the surrounding lava field. The idea was that it would seep away and disappear into the porous rock.
But something unexpected happened. The silica dissolved in the water, as it cooled, did not filter well: it precipitated and sealed the pores of the lava, making the ground watertight. So instead of disappearing, the water gradually formed a larger and larger pool, of a characteristic milky blue, in the middle of the black volcanic landscape. Without meaning to, the Svartsengi plant had created an artificial geothermal lagoon. What began as industrial waste was about to start a very different story.
In the early 1980s, some local people began to notice that curious pool of warm, bluish water that had formed beside the Svartsengi plant. The water was hot — heated by the same geothermal process — and it occurred to some of them simply to get in and bathe. There were no facilities, no changing rooms, nothing of the sort: it was an improvised bathe in the middle of a lava field.
The turning point came with people who suffered from psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. According to the most widely told story, a man with psoriasis named Valur Margeirsson began bathing in the lagoon in the early 1980s and noticed a marked improvement in his skin lesions. Word of mouth spread, and other people with skin problems began to come, convinced that the water rich in silica, minerals and algae had healing properties. The lagoon's fame as a therapeutic place began to grow.
With interest rising, in 1987 the first basic public bathing facilities were set up, and in 1992 the Blue Lagoon officially opened as a public bathing site, with more formal facilities. What had begun as waste water from a power plant was turning into a spa. The connection between the Blue Lagoon and dermatology would be sealed over the years, when a research centre and a psoriasis treatment clinic were established there.
Through the 1990s, the Blue Lagoon grew in popularity, not only among people seeking treatment for skin conditions but among Icelanders and, increasingly, tourists who wanted the unique experience of bathing in geothermal water in the middle of a lava field. Demand grew so much that the original facilities became too small. In 1999, the Blue Lagoon moved to its current site and building, with a modern architectural design integrated into the volcanic landscape, changing rooms, restaurants and infrastructure designed to receive large numbers of visitors.
Alongside this, the company developed a scientific and commercial dimension. It set up a research and development centre devoted to studying the properties of the water (silica, algae and minerals), and a clinic specialising in the treatment of psoriasis with documented results. That research also gave rise to its own skincare product line based on the lagoon's ingredients, which became a significant business in its own right.
With Iceland's tourism boom after the 2008 financial crisis — when the króna was devalued and the country became more affordable, and even more so after the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption that put Iceland on the world map — the Blue Lagoon became one of the absolute icons of Icelandic tourism. The facilities were expanded, the Silica (2013) and the luxury The Retreat (2018) hotels were built, with its exclusive spa and the Moss restaurant, and the lagoon came to receive more than a million visitors a year, becoming an almost obligatory visit for anyone arriving in the country.
To understand the Blue Lagoon you have to understand the extraordinary ground it sits on. The Reykjanes peninsula is one of the few places on the planet where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge — the enormous underwater mountain chain that separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates — emerges above the surface. Here, the two plates pull apart by about two centimetres a year, and that boundary between continents is the cause of all the volcanic and geothermal activity in the area.
As the plates separate, magma rises from the depths, heats the rocks and the groundwater, and feeds geothermal systems such as Svartsengi, which supplies the Blue Lagoon. That is why the whole of Reykjanes is dotted with fumaroles, boiling mud pools (such as those at Gunnuhver), young lava fields and ground coloured by volcanic activity. At the peninsula's famous 'Bridge Between Continents', visitors can literally walk over a bridge crossing a fissure between the two plates.
The Reykjanes peninsula is also a UNESCO Global Geopark (Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark) for its exceptional geological value. Understanding this geology helps you appreciate that the Blue Lagoon is not an isolated curiosity but the tourist expression of a much bigger phenomenon: the activity of one of the most dynamic tectonic boundaries on Earth, which shapes the whole of Iceland.
For almost 800 years, the Reykjanes peninsula had stayed volcanically quiet, with no eruptions since the thirteenth century. That long calm was broken spectacularly in March 2021, when an eruption began in the Geldingadalir valley, near Mount Fagradalsfjall. It was an effusive and relatively accessible eruption that became a tourist phenomenon: thousands of people walked to the site to see the rivers of lava up close, in a safe and fascinating spectacle.
That 2021 eruption was only the beginning. Further eruptions followed at Fagradalsfjall in 2022 and 2023, a sign that the whole Reykjanes volcanic system had entered an active phase that, according to volcanologists, could last decades or centuries. The situation became far more serious in late 2023, when the activity shifted towards the Sundhnúkur crater system, much closer to the town of Grindavík and to the Svartsengi plant and the Blue Lagoon themselves.
In November 2023, intense seismic activity and the formation of a magma dyke beneath Grindavík forced the town to be completely evacuated. From December 2023 and through 2024 there were several eruptions in the Sundhnúkur area, with lava flows that reached the outskirts of Grindavík, damaged infrastructure and forced defensive walls to be built to protect the geothermal plant and the Blue Lagoon. The spa closed temporarily on several occasions for safety. This new volcanic era is now part of the reality of the area, and any visitor should check the current situation before travelling through the official Icelandic sources.
The Blue Lagoon cannot be fully understood without looking at Icelandic bathing culture, a deeply rooted tradition. In Iceland, geothermal hot water is abundant and cheap, and almost every town has its public geothermal pool (sundlaug), a social space as important as the square or the café in other countries. Icelanders go to the pool to relax, talk, socialise and fight off the cold and darkness of winter. The rule about showering naked before getting in, which surprises many tourists, is part of that culture of hygiene and communal respect.
The Blue Lagoon took that tradition and raised it to an international-scale tourist experience, wrapped in a luxury spa, a cosmetics brand and designer architecture. In a sense, it is the 'premium', glamorous version of something that for Icelanders is everyday. Its success inspired the creation of other tourism-oriented geothermal baths, such as the Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík, the Forest Lagoon in the north or the Mývatn Nature Baths.
Today the Blue Lagoon is, like Christ the Redeemer in Rio or the Eiffel Tower in their respective countries, one of the brand images of Iceland: it appears in almost every tourism promotion campaign and in the imagination of anyone who dreams of visiting the island. It represents the meeting of the geothermal energy that defines Iceland, the volcanic landscape, wellbeing and modern tourism. That a by-product of a power plant should have become that says a great deal about Icelanders' unique relationship with the forces of their land.
