Mount Rainier National Park protects the highest and most iconic volcano in the state of Washington: Mount Rainier, a glacier-clad colossus of 4,392 meters that dominates the Pacific Northwest skyline and that, on clear days, can be seen from Seattle and Tacoma like a vision floating above the landscape. It is an active stratovolcano, the most heavily glaciated in the contiguous United States, and a symbol of the whole region. In 1899 it became the fifth national park created in the country.
Around the volcano unfolds a world of subalpine meadows that in high summer erupt into carpets of wildflowers, ancient forests of giant conifers, waterfalls, lakes that mirror the mountain and glaciers descending its flanks. The two most famous areas are Paradise, on the south side, celebrated for its flowering meadows and its historic lodge, and Sunrise, on the northeast side, the highest point reachable by car, with head-on views of the glacier. The park offers everything from gentle strolls to the demanding climb to the summit.

The mountain was and is sacred to the Indigenous peoples of the area (Nisqually, Puyallup, Yakama and others), who knew it by names such as Tahoma or Tacobet. People in Seattle have an expression for clear days: 'the mountain is out'. They are not talking about any old hill, but about a volcano of 4,392 meters that appears floating on the horizon almost 90 kilometers away, so enormous it looks unreal. Long before it bore the name of a British admiral, for the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest that colossus was far more than a mountain: it was a sacred presence that has dominated their landscape and their worldview since time immemorial. Peoples such as the Nisqually, the Puyallup, the Yakama, the Muckleshoot, the Squaxin Island and the Cowlitz lived around the mountain and its rivers, and knew it by various names in their languages, among them Tahoma or Tacobet, usually interpreted as 'the mountain' or 'the place of the waters' or 'the mother of the waters', in reference to the rivers born of its glaciers.
The mountain was a source of life — from it came the rivers that fed the salmon and the forests — and at the same time a place feared and respected for its power, its storms and its nature as a volcano. These peoples used the subalpine meadows in summer to gather berries and hunt, and the lower slopes for hunting and gathering, but the summit and the highest areas were wrapped in a spiritual aura.
That sacred relationship with the mountain lives on among the Indigenous peoples of the region, who maintain their cultural bond with it. The preference of many for the original name 'Tahoma' over the imposed 'Rainier' reflects that deep connection and the assertion of their heritage, a debate that continues to this day.
The name by which the world knows the mountain today comes from British exploration. In 1792, during his expedition along the northwest coast of America, Captain George Vancouver sighted the imposing volcano and named it 'Mount Rainier' after his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier of the British Royal Navy, who curiously never saw the mountain. So a colossus sacred to the local peoples ended up named after a foreign military officer, a typical case of colonial cartography.
Over time there have been attempts and campaigns to restore the original name Tahoma, but 'Rainier' prevailed officially and persists, although the debate continues. The first documented ascent to the summit was made by Hazard Stevens and P. B. Van Trump in 1870, guided along part of the route by local knowledge; it was a pioneering feat of American mountaineering. Before that, Indigenous peoples had probably climbed to the higher reaches of the mountain.
Since then, Mount Rainier has become a magnet for mountaineers and explorers. Its ascent, over glaciers and at high altitude, remains a serious challenge that draws thousands of people every year and that also served as a training ground for expeditions to bigger mountains. The mountain gradually took a central place in the identity and the imagination of the state of Washington.
By the end of the 19th century, growing appreciation for the beauty and singularity of Mount Rainier, together with the rise of the conservation movement, led to calls for its protection. Naturalists and defenders of nature, among them the celebrated John Muir — who climbed to the summit in 1888 and wrote about the mountain — as well as scientists, mountaineers and societies such as the Sierra Club, campaigned to preserve it. The extraordinary concentration of glaciers, the flower meadows and the old-growth forests made the place an obvious candidate for a national park.
The campaign bore fruit in 1899, when the United States Congress established Mount Rainier National Park, making it the fifth national park in the country. It was one of the first parks created explicitly to protect a mountain environment with its wildlife, its glaciers and its landscape, at a time when the idea of a national park was still taking shape.
Through the 20th century, the park developed its infrastructure — scenic roads, historic lodges such as the Paradise Inn (1917), visitor centers and trails such as the legendary Wonderland Trail that circles the mountain — seeking to balance public access with conservation. Today, Mount Rainier remains an active volcano under watch, a world-famous nature destination and, above all, the unmistakable icon presiding over the skyline of Seattle and of the whole state of Washington.
Beyond its beauty, Mount Rainier is considered by geologists one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the United States, not so much because of the risk of an imminent explosive eruption — it has not erupted for centuries, although it is still classified as active — but because of a quieter and potentially catastrophic threat: lahars, flows of mud, rock and melted ice that can rush down the valleys at great speed, triggered by an eruption but also simply by the collapse of part of the mountain, whose rock is weakened by internal hydrothermal activity.
The risk is real and well documented: the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates there is roughly a one-in-seven probability of a catastrophic lahar occurring in the next 75 years, and more than 90,000 people today live in valleys such as that of the Puyallup River, built on deposits from ancient lahars, in areas that could be affected by a future event of this kind. Entire communities in the Puyallup valley, including part of the town of Orting, sit literally on the mud of an eruption and collapse that happened some 500 years ago.
To mitigate that risk, since 1998 a group of local, state and federal agencies — Pierce County, the USGS, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and emergency management bodies — has operated the Mount Rainier Lahar Detection System, a network of seismic and acoustic sensors installed in the valleys running down from the mountain, capable of automatically detecting the characteristic vibrations of a lahar in motion and triggering early warnings to the communities downstream. In recent years the system has been modernized with new sensors on the eastern flank of the mountain, extending the coverage of this early-warning network that coexists, almost invisibly to the visitor, with the tourist experience of the park.
