📌Municipality
Benalmádena is a municipality in the province of Málaga, in Andalusia, on the western Costa del Sol between Torremolinos and Fuengirola. It covers about 26.9 km², sloping down from the Sierra de Mijas to the Mediterranean, and lies about 12 km from Málaga airport. According to the INE, 78,338 people lived here on 1 January 2025. It is really three towns that almost touch. Benalmádena Pueblo is the historic core of white houses, 241 metres up and 2.7 km from the sea. Arroyo de la Miel is the shopping and residential area that grew up around an 18th-century paper mill, and it has the train station. Benalmádena Costa has more than nine kilometres of beaches, the seafront promenade and the marina. The tourist office calls it the Costa del Sol town with the most leisure parks: it has a cable car, a dolphinarium, an aquarium and a butterfly house. It is best known for Puerto Marina, the 1982 marina with white buildings on artificial islands, and for the Estupa de la Iluminación, a 33-metre Buddhist temple with a golden dome that you can see from the motorway. It makes a practical base that is cheaper than Marbella for exploring the coast by train or bus.
📌Currency and language
You pay in euros and cards are accepted almost everywhere, even at the ticket gates of the Cercanías commuter train, which take contactless cards or your phone. Carry coins for the town bus: single tickets are paid on board. People speak Spanish with an Andalusian accent, but in Benalmádena Costa and Puerto Marina you will hear a lot of English. The tourist office counts more than 140 nationalities living in the municipality, and many menus come in several languages.
📌Best time to go
The tourist office talks about more than 300 days of sunshine a year, with mild winters and most of the rain in November and February. For the beach, go from June to September. July and August are the most expensive and crowded months. May, June, September and October usually strike the best balance between weather and price. Note that the cable car and Selwo Marina do not open every day and they close for bad weather or maintenance, so check their calendars before planning your trip.
📌Visa and entry
Argentines, Uruguayans, Chileans, Mexicans, Colombians and Peruvians can enter Spain as tourists without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen area. Since 10 April 2026 the EES (Entry/Exit System) has been fully in operation, so your fingerprints and photo are taken at your first Schengen border check. As of October 2026, ETIAS, the online pre-travel authorisation, is not yet required and has no official start date.

🌤️ Weather in Benalmádena
Loading weather…
Benalmádena has something unusual on the Costa del Sol. In a single day you can ride a cable car up a mountain of almost 800 metres, come down to a white village with a square and a fountain, and end the afternoon on the beach or watching boats in a storybook marina. Everything is close together and connected by bus or train, so you don't need a car. That makes it a good choice for travellers on a tight budget who want a base for visiting Málaga, Mijas or Fuengirola.
What surprises people most is the mix. A golden Buddhist stupa stands on the hillside, and the tourist office says it is the largest in the Western world. A little further down is a castle that a doctor built in honour of Columbus. On the coast there is a 1930s neo-Moorish castle that is now a cultural centre. In between you'll find a dolphinarium, an aquarium, a butterfly house with more than 1,500 butterflies and a 20-hectare city park with a lake, a small zoo and a cactus garden.
It is not a quiet place in August, when the seafront promenade fills up with families and with British and Scandinavian tourists. But it has a clear advantage over its more famous neighbours: hotels and meals cost quite a bit less, the town bus costs €1.60 and the train gets you to the airport in about 20 minutes. If you're travelling with kids, it is probably the town on the coast with the most things to do per square metre.
📖 History of Benalmádena
Benalmádena's history begins in the Cueva del Toro, on Mount Calamorro, with cave paintings attributed to the Solutrean period, about 21,000 years ago. The caves of La Serrezuela were used in the Neolithic, and about 2,900 years ago the settlement of Cerro de la Era coexisted with the first Phoenicians. The Romans left two coastal villas: Benalroma, occupied between the 1st and 6th centuries, and the Villa Mauritana at Torremuelle, which had fish-salting works. The name appears in the al-Andalus period and is usually explained as Ibn al-Madena, 'sons of the mines', after the local iron deposits. The fortress of today's Pueblo was probably built in the 12th century, and the Nasrids watched the coast from towers such as Torre Bermeja and Torre Quebrada. In 1485 the troops of Ferdinand the Catholic destroyed the alcazaba. In 1491 there was an attempt to resettle the town with 30 Christian families, which had little success because of pirate raids. In 1784 the Genoese Félix Solesio bought the Arroyo de la Miel estate and set up the San Carlos paper works to supply the Real Fábrica de Naipes in Macharaviaya, and the neighbourhood grew from there. Tourism arrived from the 1950s, with hotels such as the Riviera and the Alay, the Tívoli World park in 1972 and Puerto Marina in 1982. The cable car up the Calamorro has run since 3 March 2000, and the Estupa de la Iluminación opened on 5 October 2003. Tívoli World, on the other hand, has been closed for more than five years, and in 2026 a plan to reopen it with hotels and shops was still pending.

Puerto Marina (Puerto Deportivo de Benalmádena)
The marina with white buildings on artificial islands, voted best marina in the world in 1995 and 1997.
Leer más ↓
Puerto Marina is Benalmádena's postcard view. It opened in 1982, and the tourist office points out that it was voted Best Marina in the World in 1995 and 1997 and has held a Blue Flag since 1987. It has more than 1,100 berths and very distinctive architecture: white, Mediterranean-style buildings set on artificial islands linked by bridges and canals.
You can walk around it for free. Along the docks there are restaurants, bars, ice-cream shops, stores, a small amusement park and play areas for kids. The SEA LIFE aquarium is right here, and this is where the dolphin-watching boats and the ferry to Fuengirola leave from. At night it fills up with people and music from the pubs.
It's worth going twice: mid-morning for a quiet walk and photos of the islands, and at sunset, when the sun drops over the sea and the terraces light up. Be careful about eating right on the waterfront, because you pay for the view. For something cheaper, walk a few blocks towards Avenida Antonio Machado. The busiest bus stop in the municipality is on that avenue, very close to the marina.
ℹ️ Distance: In Benalmádena Costa; Avenida Antonio Machado bus stop very close by · Best time to go: All year round; best at sunset · Admission: Free (public space; source: thisisbenalmadena.travel, tourist office, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Teleférico de Benalmádena and Mount Calamorro
The only cable car on the Costa del Sol: a 15-minute ride from Arroyo de la Miel to the top of the Calamorro, with views over the whole coast.
Leer más ↓
The cable car has run since 3 March 2000. The bottom station is on the Explanada del Tívoli, in the middle of Arroyo de la Miel. The four-person cabins travel 2,646 metres of cable and climb 636 metres in about 15 minutes. First you pass over the Tívoli World park (closed), and then the view opens up over the whole Málaga coast.
The top station sits at about 720 metres and the summit of the Calamorro at about 770. Short trails lead to viewpoints, and the operator says that on clear days you can see the Sierra Nevada, the Rock of Gibraltar and even the coast of Africa. The Fundación Valle de las Águilas puts on a birds-of-prey show, which costs extra. If you like walking, signposted trails start from the summit, such as the Arroyo de los Muertos trail, which goes down to Arroyo de la Miel.
Buy online, because it is quite a bit cheaper than at the ticket office. It doesn't open every day and it closes in high winds or for maintenance, so check the calendar or call 952 577 773 before you go. Bring a jacket: it's much windier at the top than on the beach.
ℹ️ Distance: Bottom station on the Explanada del Tívoli, Arroyo de la Miel; steps from Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel train station · Best time to go: Clear days; morning or afternoon, never in strong wind · Admission: Return: from 17,90 € online and from 21,90 € at the ticket office (ages 8 and up); reduced from 12,90 € online; free for children under 3 and under 1 metre tall (source: telefericobenalmadena.com, verified October 2026) · Duration: 2 to 3 hours including the summit

Estupa de la Iluminación (Stupa de Benalmádena)
A 33-metre Buddhist temple with a golden dome, opened in 2003 on the hillside of Benalmádena Pueblo. Entry is free.
Leer más ↓
The Estupa de la Iluminación opened on 5 October 2003 at the initiative of Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche, a Buddhist master from Bhutan. The tourist office calls it the largest Buddhist temple in the Western world. It is 33 metres tall, with a square base 25 metres on each side and a golden dome that shines in the sun and can be seen from the motorway.
Most stupas are solid, but you can go inside this one. It has a meditation hall of more than 100 m², and anyone can go in and join the guided meditations. You are asked to be quiet and respectful, as in any temple.
The view from the esplanade is one of the best in the municipality, with Arroyo de la Miel and the sea below. It is about a 15-minute walk from the historic centre of Benalmádena Pueblo, and the Monowa butterfly house is right next door, so it makes sense to visit both together. By bus, line M-103 has a stop called Stupa Tibetana. The stupa's official website was not accessible in October 2026, so check opening hours at the tourist office before you go.
ℹ️ Distance: Avenida Retamar, in the upper part of Benalmádena Pueblo; Stupa Tibetana stop on line M-103 · Best time to go: All year round; at sunset the dome glows gold · Admission: Free (open access; source: thisisbenalmadena.travel, tourist office, verified October 2026) · Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Benalmádena Pueblo (old town)
The historic core of white houses almost 300 metres above the sea, with the Niña de Benalmádena, the Jardines del Muro and a pre-Columbian museum.
Leer más ↓
Benalmádena Pueblo is where the municipality began: a town from the al-Andalus period clinging to the hillside, about 2.7 km from the coast. It still has narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed façades with flowerpots and quiet squares, very different from the atmosphere down on the Costa.
At its centre is the Plaza de España, with the sculpture of the Niña de Benalmádena by Jaime Pimentel: a bronze girl holding out a seashell, the symbol of the town since the late 1960s. Nearby are the church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Jardines del Muro, redesigned in the 1980s by César Manrique along the line of the old town wall. From their viewpoint you can see the Castillo de Colomares.
On the Plaza de las Tres Culturas is the Museo de Arte Precolombino Felipe Orlando. The tourist office says it is the only museum of its kind in Spain, with pieces from pre-Columbian America and archaeological finds from the municipality. For a Latin American reader it's a curiosity: pottery from our own continent in an Andalusian village.
Take bus M-103 up from the Costa. It's a good place for the menú del día, which is cheaper here than at the marina.
ℹ️ Distance: About 2.7 km from the coast, on the hillside; town bus M-103 · Best time to go: All year round; best in the morning or at sunset · Admission: Walking around is free. Pre-Columbian Museum: free admission according to the museum's municipal events listing (source: benalmadena.es, November 2024 listing, verified October 2026) · Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Castillo de Colomares (Castillo Monumento Colomares)
A monument to Columbus and the discovery of America, built by a doctor between 1987 and 1994, with a mix of styles and the three caravels.
Leer más ↓
The Castillo de Colomares is not a medieval castle. The doctor Esteban Martín Martín (1926-2001) built it between 1987 and 1994, with the help of two bricklayers from Mijas, as a tribute to Christopher Columbus and his first voyage to America. It mixes neo-Byzantine, neo-Romanesque, neo-Gothic and neo-Mudéjar styles, and the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa María appear on its walls.
The visit is outdoors. You walk around the outside of the monument at your own pace, and 17 points with QR codes explain each corner in several languages. On the ground floor there is a museum of facsimiles with copies of documents from the time of the Discovery. According to the tourist office, it has the smallest chapel in the world, dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and recognised by Guinness World Records, but for now you can't go inside it.
The tourist office estimates an hour and a half to see all of it. It is in the Finca La Carraca, on the road that climbs to the Pueblo. You pay for tickets directly at the ticket office, with no need to book. In autumn it is closed on Mondays.
ℹ️ Distance: Finca La Carraca, Ctra. Costa del Sol, below Benalmádena Pueblo · Best time to go: All year round; in autumn, Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 6 pm (closed Mondays) · Admission: Adults 3,50 €; children and retirees 2,50 €; pay at the ticket office (source: castillomonumentocolomares.com, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Selwo Marina
A marine park inside the Parque de la Paloma, with penguins in an icy enclosure, sea lions, a dolphinarium and tropical wildlife.
Leer más ↓
Selwo Marina is Benalmádena's marine animal park, inside the Parque de la Paloma. It is run by the same group as the cable car and Selwo Aventura, which is why combined tickets are sold. It is divided into themed areas: the Isla de Hielo, with penguins; Las Antillas, home to the dolphinarium; La Hondonada; and Los Trópicos and Amazonía, with exotic birds, squirrel monkeys and a giant tortoise.
During the day there are educational talks, animal feedings and an exotic bird show. Animal encounters (with penguins or sea lions, or the VIP experience) cost extra and are booked online.
Note: in October 2026 the park's website warned that, because of technical adjustments, the main pool was temporarily without activities. Before you pay, check online which shows are running that day. Prices are dynamic, so online is cheaper than the ticket office and there are sometimes big promotions. Outside the high season it doesn't open every day, so look at the opening calendar.
For families with small children it's a half-day visit. You can walk there from Arroyo de la Miel or from the beach.
ℹ️ Distance: Parque de la Paloma, between Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa · Best time to go: Spring and autumn, when it's cooler and less crowded · Admission: General (ages 8 to 64): from 15,90 € online and from 17,90 € at the ticket office; reduced from 13,90 € (source: selwomarina.es, verified October 2026) · Duration: Half a day

SEA LIFE Benalmádena
An aquarium in Puerto Marina with an underwater tunnel, sharks, a ray island and a temple of Asian otters.
Leer más ↓
SEA LIFE Benalmádena is an aquarium in the Merlin Entertainments chain that has been open since 1995 inside Puerto Marina itself. It's small compared with the big European aquariums, but it works well for kids. It has an underwater tunnel where fish and sharks swim over your head, plus the Ray Island, the Wetlands of the World area and the Otter Temple, home to Asian small-clawed otters.
Feedings and talks run throughout the day and are included in the ticket. A virtual reality experience is sold as an extra. It opens seven days a week. In October 2026 the hours were 11 am to 6.45 pm, with last entry at 6 pm.
If you buy online in advance you save up to 10 % and can choose a time slot. It pairs well with a walk around the marina or with the dolphin boat, which leaves from the same spot. The operator Costasol Cruceros sells a package that includes both. The aquarium advises against coming by train, because the nearest station (El Pinillo) is about a 20-minute walk away. The bus to the Benalmar stop is a better option.
ℹ️ Distance: Inside Puerto Marina, Benalmádena Costa · Best time to go: All year round; ideal on a cloudy or very hot day · Admission: 21 € at the ticket office; online from 18,50 € (source: visitsealife.com, verified October 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

A Thai-style temple with more than 1,500 exotic butterflies flying free among waterfalls and tropical plants.

The Mariposario de Benalmádena, now renamed Monowa, is in a building inspired by Thai temples next to the Stupa. Inside, more than 1,500 butterflies from different parts of the world fly free in a tropical setting with waterfalls and flowers. You can watch them hatch, feed and breed, and they often land on you.
The tourist office says it won best attraction at the Remarkable Avenue Awards 2021. It is open 365 days a year. From 1 October to 31 December it opens from 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry half an hour before closing. It's hot and humid inside, so dress lightly.
The visit isn't long, so combine it with the Stupa next door and then walk or take the bus down to the Pueblo. According to the butterfly house itself, from Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel train station you take line 103 and get off at the Stupa Tibetana stop. By car, take exit 1008 off the A-7 motorway, and there is free parking nearby.

Parque de la Paloma
Benalmádena's big city park: more than 200,000 m² with an artificial lake, a small zoo and a cactus and succulent garden.

The Parque de la Paloma is the municipality's green lung and, according to the tourist office, one of the most visited city parks on the Costa del Sol. It covers more than 200,000 m², with shady paths, a large artificial lake with ducks, playgrounds and places to rest.
The best part for families with kids is the small zoo inside the park. There is also a Cactus and Succulent Garden with more than 450 species from around the world. There are bars and restaurants inside, but you can also bring food and have a picnic on the grass.
It's a few minutes' walk from the beach and links Arroyo de la Miel with Benalmádena Costa, so it makes a pleasant shortcut between the train area and the sea. Selwo Marina is inside the park. Next door, at the fairground, there is a flea market and an organic market, and you can see the municipality's Hindu temple.
It's a good free plan for the afternoon, or for a break from the beach when the sun gets too strong.

Castillo El Bil-Bil and Bil-Bil beach
A 1930s neo-Moorish mansion by the sea, now a cultural centre, next to a central beach on the seafront promenade.

El Castillo El Bil-Bil is one of the symbols of Benalmádena Costa. It is a neo-Arabic style building from the 1930s, designed by Enrique Atencia according to the encyclopedia, on Avenida Antonio Machado right next to the seafront promenade. Today it is a cultural venue open all year round, with exhibitions and activities.
It is part of what the tourist office calls the cultural triangle, together with the Centro de Exposiciones and the Centro de la Historia de Benalmádena. The latter opened in 2022 facing the sea and incorporates the remains of the Roman villa of Benalroma, with oil and fish-salting production areas dating from the 1st to the 7th centuries.
You can see the building for free from outside, and it is one of the classic photos of the promenade. In front of it is Bil-Bil beach, central and right on the seafront promenade, which the tourist office highlights along with Malapesquera and Santa Ana. On the night of San Juan, 23 June, the big concert that opens the festivities takes place next to the castle. Torrebermeja-Santa Ana, Fuente de la Salud and Carvajal beaches
Benalmádena's three Blue Flag 2026 beaches, along more than nine kilometres of coastline with an accessible seafront promenade.
Leer más ↓
Benalmádena has more than nine kilometres of coastline, according to the tourist office: wide sandy beaches beside the seafront promenade in the east and rockier, quieter coves towards the west, good for snorkelling. In 2026 three beaches were awarded the Blue Flag: Torrebermeja-Santa Ana, which regained the distinction, Carvajal and Fuente de la Salud.
Torrebermeja, also called Malapesquera, sits right next to Puerto Marina and the yacht club, and takes its name from a Nasrid watchtower that still stands. Fuente de la Salud is also next to the marina, with plenty of places to eat. Carvajal is at the western end, on the border with Fuengirola, and is usually quieter.
They are all public and free; you only pay if you rent a sun lounger and umbrella at a chiringuito. There are showers, toilets, children's play areas, and some beaches have ramps, amphibious chairs and walkways for people with reduced mobility. There is also Benalnatura, one of the first nudist beaches in Spain. The Mediterranean water here is cooler than in the Caribbean: in June it can still be cold.
ℹ️ Distance: All along Benalmádena Costa; Torrebermeja and Fuente de la Salud next to Puerto Marina · Best time: June to September for swimming; all year round for walking · Admission: Free (public beaches; Blue Flags 2026 according to El Español, May 2026, verified October 2026) · Duration: As long as you like

Arroyo de la Miel
The town's lively shopping district, which grew up around a paper mill founded in 1784, with tapas, a street market and a train station.
Leer más ↓
Arroyo de la Miel is the Benalmádena where people actually live. It is the most populated area and the most practical for staying on a budget, because it has the underground Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel train station and sits between the Pueblo and the beach. The name comes, according to the encyclopedia, from the honeycombs that were common in the area.
Its origins lie in the San Carlos paper works, which the Genoese Félix Solesio set up in 1784 to supply paper to the Real Fábrica de Naipes in Macharaviaya. From that era remain the 18th-century La Tribuna building and the lintelled San Carlos arch, which marked the entrance to the factory, near the neighbourhood's Plaza de España.
Today it is an area of shopping streets, terraces and tapas bars with local prices. It has a street market on Avenida Manantial, the Casa de la Cultura and an open-air municipal auditorium. The cable car station is right here, on the Explanada del Tívoli, and the Parque de la Paloma is a few blocks away. It is the best area for anyone who wants to get around by train and eat well without paying marina prices.
ℹ️ Distance: Town centre; Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel commuter train station · Best time: All year round; in the evening, for tapas · Admission: Free (public streets and squares; source: thisisbenalmadena.travel, tourist office, verified October 2026) · Duration: Half a day

Day trip to Mijas Pueblo
A neighbouring white mountain village, a short ride on the M-121 bus from Benalmádena, with viewpoints over the coast.
Leer más ↓
Mijas Pueblo is the most visited white village on this part of the coast and it is very close: the Consorcio de Transporte's M-121 line links Mijas with Benalmádena and Torremolinos, and a ticket from Benalmádena Costa costs 1,75 €. It is a half-day trip you can do without a car or a tour operator.
The village sits on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, the same range as the Calamorro, and has whitewashed streets with flowerpots and viewpoints over Fuengirola and the sea. It tends to get a lot of tour groups, so timing matters.
A tip: go up early, before the tour coaches arrive, and come down to Benalmádena or Fuengirola for lunch, where food is cheaper. If you want to add some beach time, from Mijas you can go down to Fuengirola and come back on the C1 train or on the Costasol Cruceros ferry to Puerto Marina. If you prefer everything organised, there are tours combining Marbella and Mijas from 39,90 € per person on Civitatis.

In Málaga you can explore the historic centre, the cathedral, the Alcazaba and the Roman theatre, the port with Muelle Uno and Malagueta beach. Many museums have their own rates and some are free on certain days: check each website before you go.
María Zambrano station is also the AVE (high-speed train) station for Madrid, Córdoba or Seville, and Málaga's bus station is right next to it, connected through the El Perchel interchange. Watch out for the last train back if you go out at night. The C1 is often packed at rush hour and has occasional cancellations: leave yourself some margin if you have a flight to catch.

NotesThe M-103 is the most useful for visitors: it links Torremuelle, Benalmádena Costa, Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Pueblo, with the Stupa Tibetana stop for the Stupa and the butterfly park and the Tívoli stop for the cable car. The M-107 runs a loop between Santángelo and Arroyo de la Miel.
Consorcio metropolitan buses (M-110, M-112, M-116, M-121, M-123, M-126)
PriceBenalmádena Costa-Torremolinos 1,60 €; Benalmádena Costa-Málaga, Fuengirola or Mijas 1,75 €; with a card 1,04 € and 1,18 € (source: official Avanza fare table, version in force since 1 June 2026, verified October 2026)

The M-110 goes to Málaga, the M-121 to Mijas Pueblo and the M-126 to Torremolinos. The main stop is on Avenida Antonio Machado, near Puerto Marina; there is no proper bus terminal.
C1 commuter train (Málaga-Airport-Fuengirola)
PriceRenfe does not publish the price of each journey: fares are charged by zone and shown by the ticket machine or the gate. You can pay with a contactless card or your phone, tapping in and out; from the fifth journey of the month there is a 40 % discount (source: renfe.com, verified October 2026). As a reference, an aggregator lists a 1-2 zone single at 1,80 € (source: redtransporte.com, aggregator, verified October 2026)
NotesBenalmádena has two stations: Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel (underground, the main one) and Torremuelle, on the coast. If you do not tap out, you are charged the maximum fare for all zones. It gets very crowded at rush hour.
On foot along the seafront promenade
PriceFree (public promenade; source: thisisbenalmadena.travel, tourist office, verified October 2026)
NotesThe seafront promenade runs along the whole coastline and is accessible. You can easily walk between Puerto Marina, Bil-Bil and the Parque de la Paloma. To go up to the Pueblo or the Stupa, however, take the M-103 bus: the hill is steep.

🍴 Where to eat
Menú del día y cocina casera en Benalmádena Pueblo
Options / signature dishAt lunchtime many bars in the Pueblo offer a menú del día (starter, main, dessert and a drink). At Restaurante Manolo one diner reported paying 14,50 €, and at Mesón La Mezquita, calle Extremadura 10, customers single out the menú del día for its value for money (source: Gastroranking, reviews, checked October 2026). Eating here is cheaper than in Puerto Marina
Tapas en Arroyo de la Miel
Options / signature dishArroyo de la Miel is where locals go for tapas. Los Delantales, on calle San Telmo, comes to around 20 € per person and its customers recommend the chicken (source: Gastroranking, checked October 2026). Order pescaíto frito (small battered and fried fish) or boquerones, and ask about the tapa of the day. Book at weekends
Espetos de sardinas en los chiringuitos de playa
Options / signature dishThe espeto is the signature dish of the Málaga coast: sardines skewered on a cane and grilled over a fire, in a boat filled with sand. A travel blog puts Chiringuito Rafael, on Fuente de la Salud beach, and Chiringuito Malapesquera, next to Puerto Marina, at about 25-35 € per person (source: blog
viajandoporelmundomundial.com, checked October 2026). At Malapesquera they also suggest porra antequerana and battered boquerones
Pescados, mariscos y arroces
Options / signature dishFor a more sit-down fish lunch: Taberna Marinera Pepi y Juan, on avenida Juan Sebastián Elcano, and La Despensa del Mar, on avenida de la Constitución, known for its rice dishes: both average 20-30 € per person (source: Gastroranking, checked October 2026). Try the arroz caldoso (soupy rice) and the fritura malagueña. The restaurants on the Puerto Marina waterfront charge more for the view
❓ Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa, EES or ETIAS to visit Benalmádena from Latin America?+
You don't need a visa if you hold an Argentine, Uruguayan, Chilean, Mexican, Colombian or Peruvian passport: you can stay as a tourist for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area. What changed in 2026 is the EES, the Entry/Exit System: since 10 April your fingerprints and photo are taken at your first Schengen border check instead of your passport being stamped. If you reach Málaga with a stopover in Madrid or another European city, you go through it there. ETIAS, the prior online authorisation, is not required yet: at the end of July 2026 the EU removed the reference to the last quarter of 2026 from its website and said it will announce the date several months in advance. Carry your return ticket, bookings, health insurance and proof of funds.
Is there a tourist tax in Benalmádena?+
No. As of October 2026 Andalusia has no tourist tax and Benalmádena doesn't charge one of its own either, because Andalusian municipalities can't create one without a law from the Junta (the regional government). The issue is under debate: in September 2026 the mayor of Seville again asked the Junta to allow it, while hoteliers oppose it and Vox, which is part of the Andalusian government, rejects it. So you won't see that charge on your hotel bill. If you're travelling in 2027 or later, it's worth checking again, since any change would come through a regional law.
How do I get from Málaga airport to Benalmádena?+
The most practical and cheapest option is the Cercanías C1 train towards Fuengirola. The station is inside the airport, and in about 20 minutes you reach Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel or Torremuelle; according to the tourist office it runs roughly every 20 minutes for much of the day. The price depends on the zones and Renfe doesn't publish it per journey: you see it at the ticket machine, or you pay with a contactless card at the turnstile, tapping again on the way out. There's no direct bus from the airport to Benalmádena. A taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes; we couldn't find an official published fare, and aggregators give averages of 23 to 46 €.
How many days should I stay and where should I sleep?+
Two or three days are enough for Benalmádena itself: one for the cable car and Arroyo de la Miel, another for the Pueblo, the Stupa, the butterfly park and Colomares, and another for Puerto Marina and the beach. If you're travelling with kids, add a day for Selwo Marina and SEA LIFE. With five or six days you can use the town as a base for Málaga, Mijas, Fuengirola and even day trips to Ronda or Granada. For sleeping, Arroyo de la Miel is the most practical for the train and prices; Benalmádena Costa if you want beach and nightlife; the Pueblo if you're after peace and quiet, though you'll rely on the M-103 bus.
Do I need a car?+
No. Benalmádena is well connected: the C1 train reaches the airport, Málaga and Fuengirola; the M-103 local bus links the Costa, Arroyo de la Miel and the Pueblo for 1,60 €; and the Consorcio buses go to Mijas, Torremolinos and Málaga for 1,60 to 1,75 €. The hardest parts on foot are the climbs up to the Pueblo and the Stupa, but that's what the bus is for. A car is useful if you want to explore inland villages or head to the mountains on your own. If you rent one, bring an International Driving Permit along with your licence, as it's usually requested from people with a Latin American licence.
Is it safe, and is it good for kids?+
It's a family-friendly, relaxed destination by tourist-area standards. The main risk, as all along the coast, is petty theft: keep an eye on your phone and wallet on the beach, on crowded trains and in Puerto Marina at night. For kids it's one of the best places on the Costa del Sol: the tourist office bills it as the town with the most leisure parks, and you have the cable car, Selwo Marina, SEA LIFE, the butterfly park and Parque de la Paloma, which is free. One tip: the Tívoli World amusement park, which still appears in some guides, has been closed for more than five years.
What should I know about the train and planned works?+
The C1 is the backbone of local transport, but it gets very crowded at peak times and in 2026 it had cancellations and breakdowns. If you have a flight to catch, leave with time to spare. A closure of about six months has also been announced on the Málaga-Torremolinos section for works, planned for late 2027 or early 2028, with replacement buses whose details haven't been published yet. If you're travelling around then, check Renfe's notices. One more thing: the cheap monthly Cercanías pass is for residents of Spain; as a tourist you'll pay for single tickets, although with a contactless card there's a 40 % discount from your fifth journey of the month.
