Krka National Park is Dalmatia's water postcard: a river that, instead of eroding the rock, builds it. Its stepped waterfalls do not fall over hard stone but over living barriers of tufa (travertine), formed over millennia by mosses, algae and calcium carbonate. The result is Skradinski buk, the largest tufa waterfall in Europe: seventeen linked falls over some 400 metres, among wooden boardwalks, old mills and pools of an impossible turquoise.
But Krka is much more than its star waterfall. Upstream is Roški slap, its curtain of fine threads of water nicknamed 'the necklaces'; in the middle of the lake floats the island of Visovac, with a 15th-century Franciscan monastery; and hidden among the canyons is the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Krka. To all of that add a surprising fact: beside Skradinski buk, from 1895, one of the world's first hydroelectric plants operated, giving Šibenik electric light barely two days after the plant at Niagara Falls.

The river Krka rises near Knin and, on its way to the Adriatic at Šibenik, creates a sequence of tufa waterfalls unique in Europe. Those travertine barriers, formed by the action of mosses and algae on the calcium carbonate in the water, are the same process that shaped Plitvice. Franciscan monks settled on this landscape on the island of Visovac (1445) and Serbian Orthodox monks at the Krka monastery, and in 1895 the Jaruga hydroelectric plant was installed here, one of the world's first using alternating current. Origins, formation and what the sources say.
Almost every river in the world does the same thing: it erodes, wears down, carries stone off to the sea. The Krka does the opposite. On its roughly 70-kilometre journey from the mountains of the Dalmatian interior to the Adriatic, this river does not dig its bed: it builds it, raising walls of stone that it then tumbles over. That geological oddity is the whole point of Krka National Park, and it explains why its waterfalls are like no others.
The Krka rises near the town of Knin, at the foot of Mount Dinara, beside the Topolje waterfall. From there it crosses karst country: a landscape of porous, cracked limestone where water filters down, disappears underground and reappears loaded with minerals. Limestone is soluble, and the water running through it carries away dissolved calcium carbonate from the rock itself. That chemical detail — 'hard' water, saturated with lime — is the seed of everything that follows.
Along its course, the Krka forms seven great stepped waterfalls and several lake-like widenings, such as Visovac. The most famous and spectacular is the last before the sea, Skradinski buk, where the water drops almost 46 metres across seventeen linked falls over some 400 metres. It is the largest travertine waterfall in Europe. Upstream is Roški slap, with its wide curtain of fine threads of water; and in between, the river slows and opens into still surfaces where islands float. When the Krka's fresh water finally reaches Šibenik, it meets the Adriatic tide in a unique estuary, one of the few places in Europe where a river of travertine waters flows straight into the sea.
The secret of the Krka — and of its big brother, Plitvice — lies in one word: tufa, or travertine (sedra, in Croatian). Tufa is a porous limestone that does not form under geological pressure over millions of years but here and now, in the water, at a rate you can measure in millimetres per year. And the most astonishing part is that it is largely made by living things.
The process works like this. The Krka's water comes down saturated with dissolved calcium carbonate and carbon dioxide. When it reaches a rapid, a rock or a drop, the water churns, splashes and releases CO2 into the air. Losing that gas breaks the chemical balance: the calcium carbonate stops being dissolved and begins to precipitate, that is, to settle as a solid crust on any irregular surface. Mosses, algae and certain bacteria living in the water act as scaffolding: their surfaces offer points where the carbonate can grip and crystallise, so that the vegetation itself becomes coated in stone and turns into part of the barrier.
That barrier grows. And as it grows, the roughness and the gradient increase, so the water churns even more, releases more CO2 and deposits more carbonate: a virtuous circle that raises, layer by layer, barriers that end up metres high. That is why Krka's waterfalls are 'alive': they are growing and changing all the time. These barriers are reckoned to take centuries and millennia to form, and they are extremely fragile.
That fragility explains one of the most important pieces of news for today's visitor: since January 2021 swimming has been banned at Skradinski buk. For decades, getting into the water at the foot of the falls was Krka's iconic image, and even today many guides still repeat it. But sunscreen, trampling and human erosion were damaging the tufa barriers that nature had worked so hard to build. Banning swimming at the main waterfall was a conservation decision: protecting a work that life and chemistry took thousands of years to raise and that a season of mass tourism can degrade. Anyone who wants to swim can still do so, in summer, in the designated area at Roški slap.
The river did not only shape the landscape: it also drew those who sought isolation and silence. Deep in the canyon, the Krka holds two monasteries that sum up the religious history — and the coexistence of faiths — of the Dalmatian interior.
In the middle of Lake Visovac, on a small island covered in cypresses, stands the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Mercy. There had been a small convent of Augustinian hermits there before, but it was the Franciscans who settled permanently in 1445, seeking refuge from the advance of the Ottoman Empire, which in those centuries was pressing on the whole Dalmatian frontier. The island, ringed by water, was a natural sanctuary. The monastery survived the wars and today holds a surprising treasure for so remote a place: manuscript codices, seven incunabula (books printed before 1501) and an extremely rare 1487 edition of Aesop's Fables, of which only three copies survive anywhere in the world. It also keeps the sabre of Vuk Mandušić, a Croatian hero of the 17th-century wars against the Turks, immortalised in literature.
Upstream, in a quiet bay near Kistanje, hides the other monastery: Krka (Manastir Krka), the most important of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Croatia. It is first mentioned in documents of 1402, as a foundation of Jelena Šubić, sister of the Serbian tsar Dušan, on the remains of an earlier hermitic settlement. Its architecture blends the Byzantine and the Venetian, and beneath the church catacombs of early Christian origin survive. The existence, a few kilometres apart, of a great Catholic monastery and an Orthodox one speaks of a frontier territory where the two Christian traditions lived side by side for centuries — not always peacefully. That coexistence, and its tensions, would also shape the history of the 20th century in this same region.
There is a chapter in Krka's history that surprises almost everyone, because it has nothing to do with nature and everything to do with engineering: here, beside Skradinski buk, one of the world's first hydroelectric plants operated, and a small Croatian city was lit up almost at the same time as the great capitals.
In the years when Nikola Tesla — born in the neighbouring Croatian region of Lika — was revolutionising the world with alternating current, a group of entrepreneurs from Šibenik decided to harness the power of the Krka. The engineer Vjekoslav Meichsner obtained the permits and water rights between 1892 and 1893, and in 1895 founded the company with Šibenik's mayor, Ante Šupuk, and his son Marko. After sixteen months of work, the 'Krka' hydroelectric plant — later called Jaruga I — came into service on 28 August 1895.
The plant generated 240 kW with a Ganz two-phase generator at 3,000 volts, and a transmission line of about 11.5 kilometres, carried on hundreds of wooden poles, took the electricity to Šibenik. There it powered, among other things, the street lighting, Šupuk's flour mills and several businesses. With that, Šibenik became one of the first cities in the world with public electric lighting fed by a complete polyphase system.
The detail that makes it legendary is the comparison with Niagara Falls. The famous Adams plant at Niagara started up barely a couple of days before Krka's. But Niagara did not transmit its electricity to a city — Buffalo — until more than a year later, in 1896, when its long transmission line was finished. The Krka–Šibenik system, by contrast, worked from day one as a complete chain: generation, transmission, distribution and real consumption by a city. That is why many consider it the first complete polyphase hydroelectric system in Europe and one of the first on the planet. A second plant, Jaruga II, was built at the start of the 20th century (1903-1904) and is still producing electricity, making it one of the oldest hydroelectric plants in the world still in operation.
The natural value of the lower Krka was officially recognised in 1985, when the stretch between Knin and Skradin was declared Krka National Park, Croatia's seventh. The protection sought to preserve both the tufa waterfalls and the biodiversity of the canyon: dozens of fish species live here (several of them endemic), along with a great wealth of birds and a flora tied to water and limestone. The aim was clear: that ever-growing tourism should not destroy what it came to see.
Barely six years later, the region entered one of its hardest chapters. With the break-up of Yugoslavia, Croatia declared independence in 1991 and war broke out. The Dalmatian interior, and very particularly the Knin area — at the head of the Krka — ended up at the centre of the conflict: Knin was the capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina, and the whole district was the scene of fighting, forced displacement and suffering in both communities, Croat and Serb. The Orthodox monastery of Krka and the surrounding villages lived those years at close quarters. The war ended in 1995, after the Croatian offensive known as Operation Storm, which brought the region back under Zagreb's control and in turn caused the exodus of much of the local Serb population. It is recent and sensitive history, best remembered soberly: the serene landscape today's visitor walks through was, a few decades ago, frontier and conflict country.
With peace, the park re-emerged as one of Croatia's great natural destinations. Today it receives more than a million visitors a year, second only to Plitvice, and that popularity brought new challenges: the crowding of Skradinski buk in summer, the need for a daily ticket cap and conservation measures such as the swimming ban since 2021. Current management aims to spread the pressure towards other, less-known sectors — Roški slap, the Oziđana pećina cave, the Roman site of Burnum with its amphitheatre, the Krka Eco Campus — so that visitors discover that the park is much more than one waterfall. Between the chemistry of the water, the island monks, the pioneering light of Jaruga and the scars of the 20th century, the Krka goes on doing what it has always done: building, layer by layer, a landscape that exists nowhere else.
