📌Where it is
Rua Jardim Botânico 414, Jardim Botânico neighbourhood, Zona Sul of Rio de Janeiro, at the foot of Corcovado hill and within the Parque Nacional da Tijuca.
📌Getting there
By bus from Ipanema, Leblon or Copacabana; by taxi or ride-hailing app; or by metro to Jardim de Alah, then a bus or a walk along the Lagoa.
📌How much time to spend
One or two hours for the park and the mansion; add three to five hours if you hike the trail up to Corcovado.
📌Best time
Morning, when the light pours into the mansion's courtyard and the trail is still cool. Any time of year works; after heavy rain, the path gets slippery.
📌Currency and prices
Brazilian real (R$). Entry to the park is free. You only pay for what you order at the café and, if you hike up to Christ the Redeemer, admission to the monument.
📌Language
Portuguese; the Escola de Artes Visuais has materials and staff who can manage in English.
📌The biggest surprise
The mansion's inner courtyard, with the pool in the middle and Christ the Redeemer peeking out just above the roof: after the statue itself, it's the most recognisable photo in Rio.
📌Watch out for
The mansion was temporarily closed for restoration work when this guide was written, so access to the inner courtyard may be restricted. And on the trail: don't hike it alone.

There's a courtyard in Rio where people queue for the same photo: a gallery of white columns, a pool in the centre and, above, right over the roof, Christ the Redeemer. It's the inner courtyard of the mansion at Parque Lage, and it's free. All around is a park of Atlantic rainforest with lakes, artificial grottoes, trails, a ruined aquarium and monkeys crossing through the branches, all at the foot of Corcovado hill.

The park was the estate of industrialist Henrique Lage, who in 1920 commissioned Italian architect Mario Vodret to build the mansion that is now its symbol. Since 1975, the mansion has housed the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, one of Brazil's most influential contemporary art institutions, with exhibitions, courses and a cultural programme open to the public. The estate passed to the State in the 1950s as a public park and is protected as a heritage site.

Here's the practical, up-to-date information: the official opening hours (8 to 18) and the fact that entry is free, the current state of the mansion (it was listed as closed for restoration when this guide was checked), how to hike the trail that climbs to Corcovado from the back of the park, how to get there without a taxi, and why it's worth pairing with the Jardim Botânico, ten minutes away.

📖 History of Parque Lage

The estate's history begins in 1811, when the area was a sugar mill in colonial Brazil. Throughout the 19th century it passed through various owners and uses, keeping pace with Rio's transformation. In 1920, industrialist Henrique Lage, owner of shipyards and mines, bought the property and commissioned Italian architect Mario Vodret to build the mansion, as a tribute to his wife, the Italian opera singer Gabriella Besanzoni. The result was an Italian Renaissance-inspired mansion arranged around an inner courtyard with columns and a pool, looking straight at Christ the Redeemer, which would be inaugurated a decade later. The original gardens, laid out in the English Romantic style, added lakes, artificial grottoes, a lookout tower and a small aquarium. In the 1950s the State Government took over the estate and turned it into a public park, and it was later declared a heritage site. Since 1975 the mansion has housed the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV), a centre for training and experimentation in contemporary art that several generations of Brazilian artists have passed through. In 2019 a restoration project for the mansion was announced, which is why it may be closed to the public at different times. The park borders the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, and the trail up to Corcovado starts from its far end.

The mansion and its inner courtyard

The mansion is the park's signature image: an Italian Renaissance-inspired building arranged around an open inner courtyard, with white colonnaded galleries, painted ceiling murals and a pool in the centre. From the courtyard, framed between the rooftops, Christ the Redeemer appears high up on Corcovado: it's one of Rio's most sought-after postcard shots, and it costs nothing. Since 1975 the building has housed the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, with workshops, a library, exhibition rooms and a programme of contemporary art shows. Important: when this guide was checked, the institution itself was announcing that the mansion was temporarily closed for restoration work, so it's worth checking its status before you go. Getting there: main park entrance, Rua Jardim Botânico 414. Best time: morning, with light pouring into the courtyard. Tips: the maximum capacity inside the mansion is 400 people, and photo shoots with equipment (tripods, lighting, outfit changes) are not allowed.
2
The gardens, lakes and grottoes
The Atlantic rainforest park laid out in Romantic style: trails, lakes, artificial grottoes, a lookout tower and an old aquarium.

Around the mansion stretches a park designed as an English Romantic garden: trails among huge trees, lakes with fish and turtles, bridges, artificial grottoes carved into the rock and a small disused aquarium that's part of the place's faded charm. There's also a lookout tower hidden in the greenery. Most of the grounds are Mata Atlântica, a direct continuation of the Parque Nacional da Tijuca: it's common to see marmosets, toucans and wildlife that's surprising for an urban park. The inner trails are steep in several sections and the ground is uneven, so full accessibility is limited to the area around the mansion and the garden. Getting there: explore freely from the entrance. Best time: early, with fewer people and more active wildlife. Tips: photo production equipment is not allowed, and the facilities can't be used for outfit changes or make-up.
3
The Corcovado trail
The trail that climbs from the back of the park to the Paineiras area and Christ the Redeemer: the way to reach the monument on foot.
Leer más ↓
From the back of Parque Lage starts the trilha do Corcovado, the best-known walking route up to Christ the Redeemer: about 3.5 kilometres uphill through the rainforest of the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, with stone steps, roots and a couple of sections with chains where you'll need to use your hands. The climb takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours, depending on your fitness. Reaching the top doesn't include the monument: you still pay for access to the Christ's esplanade, at the Visitor Centre or the official ticket points. Always do it in the morning, never at sunset, and the national park itself recommends not hiking alone; there are groups and guides who organise the climb. Getting there: signposted start at the back of Parque Lage. Best time: early and in dry weather. Tips: plenty of water, shoes with good grip, insect repellent and no valuables on you.
4
The Escola de Artes Visuais and its exhibitions
One of Brazil's most influential contemporary art institutions, with exhibitions, courses and a programme open to the public.
Leer más ↓
EAV Parque Lage has been based in the mansion since 1975 and is a benchmark for Brazilian contemporary art: key artists of recent decades have passed through its workshops. It offers courses, meet-ups, talks and exhibitions you can visit for free, plus guided visits for groups who book in advance. The programme is published on the official website of the school, which is run by the State Government. While the mansion is being restored, some activities may move to other spaces on the grounds, such as the Cavalariças. Getting there: inside the mansion. Best time: depends on the exhibition schedule. Tips: guided tours for walk-in visitors run on fixed days and times and need a minimum number of participants; advance booking is for institutional groups.
5
The Parque Lage café
The café set up in the mansion's courtyard, with tables under the galleries and Christ the Redeemer in view: one of the loveliest breakfasts in the city.
Leer más ↓
The inner courtyard has long been home to a café-restaurant with tables under the colonnaded galleries, around the pool. Having breakfast or lunch there, with the Christ peeking over the roof and monkeys in the trees at the back, is one of those plans people repeat every time they return to Rio. There's usually a wait on weekend mornings. Since the mansion was undergoing restoration when this guide was checked, it's worth confirming whether the café is open, and where, before making a special trip for it. Getting there: in the mansion's courtyard. Best time: early on weekdays, to avoid the queue. Tips: if the café is closed, the Jardim Botânico neighbourhood has excellent bakeries and cafés a few blocks away.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get into Parque Lage?+
Nothing: entry is free, as stated on the official EAV Parque Lage website. It's open from 8:00 to 18:00 every day (verified 22/09/2026). The Escola de Artes Visuais exhibitions are free too.
Can you go into the mansion and take the courtyard photo?+
When it's open, yes, and it's free. But when this guide was checked, the official website said that 'o Palacete se encontra temporariamente fechado para restauro', so it's worth checking its status before you go. The restoration project was announced in 2019 and is moving forward in stages. The park, gardens and trails remain open.
What's the Corcovado trail like?+
It starts at the back of the park and climbs about 3.5 kilometres through the forest of the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, with steps, roots and a few stretches with chains. It takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. Important: reaching the top doesn't include access to the Christ the Redeemer monument, which is paid separately. Do it in the morning, with hiking shoes and in company.
Are there monkeys in the park?+
Yes, marmosets and other Atlantic Forest wildlife, plus toucans and plenty of birds: the grounds run straight into the Parque Nacional da Tijuca. Don't feed them or get close: they're wild animals.
Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility?+
Partly. The park itself says it doesn't offer full accessibility: most of the area is forest with steep trails, stairs and uneven ground. The mansion area and the garden are accessible. Emotional support dogs for people with mental health conditions are allowed in, with the documentation required by law.
Can you do photo shoots?+
Not with production equipment. The park rules prohibit organising or taking part in photo shoots with tripods, flashes, lights, clothing racks or suitcases, and using the facilities (toilets, mansion, Cavalariças or outdoor areas) for changing clothes, make-up or hair styling. Personal photos without equipment are no problem.
Is it worth combining with the Jardim Botânico?+
Yes: they're on the same avenue, ten or fifteen minutes' walk apart. The usual plan is the Jardim Botânico in the morning (admission R$ 80 foreigners / R$ 40 residents) and Parque Lage around midday, which is free, or the other way round if you want to set off early on the trail.
