It sounds like a paradox, but it is the literal story of Chacaltaya: a peak of the Cordillera Real of around 5,395 meters, a little over an hour from La Paz, where for seven decades people skied on an 18,000-year-old glacier... until the glacier melted away completely. The Guinness record for the highest restaurant on the planet is still registered to its old refuge, but there is no longer any snow to slide on. Its closeness to the city was decisive throughout its history: it made the mountain first the natural setting for a one-of-a-kind ski resort, and later one of the most accessible high-altitude lookouts in the country.
Unlike the great summits of the Cordillera Real, such as Illimani or Huayna Potosí, Chacaltaya is not a 6,000-meter peak nor a mountain of great alpine difficulty. Its importance lies not in record height or technical challenge but in its singular history and its location: a balcony over the range and the altiplano that you can reach by vehicle from La Paz in a little over an hour.

The great historical chapter of Chacaltaya is its ski run, which for much of the 20th century was famous worldwide as the highest ski resort on the planet. The resort was built and run by the Club Andino Boliviano, an institution founded in 1939 to promote mountaineering and mountain sports in Bolivia, which saw in the Chacaltaya glacier, so close to La Paz, the chance to create a one-of-a-kind ski center.
The run ran over the glacier that covered the mountainside, and in 1939 it was fitted with a rudimentary lift: a drag cable powered by a car engine, considered the first ski lift in South America and the highest in the world. It was not a modern or luxurious resort but a pioneering, homemade installation, and it operated above 5,000 meters —higher than Everest's north base camp— something without parallel anywhere else.
For decades, Chacaltaya was Bolivia's only ski center and a source of national mountaineering pride. Generations of Bolivian skiers learned there, competitions were held and visitors and curious travelers arrived from all over the world, drawn by the improbable idea of skiing at such an altitude, with the Cordillera Real and the altiplano as a backdrop. Chacaltaya's fate was changed entirely by a phenomenon far larger than the mountain: climate change. Through the 20th century, and at an accelerating pace toward its end, the glacier that covered the mountainside —and that people skied on— began to retreat dramatically as temperatures rose. This was an ancient glacier, some 18,000 years old according to the studies, which had survived the end of the last ice age but could not withstand recent warming.
In the 1990s, the scientists working at the mountain's laboratory made a grim prediction: the glacier would be gone by around 2015. They were too optimistic. By 2009, six years ahead of the forecast, the ice had vanished completely, which magnified the international impact of the news. With no glacier there was no snow to ski on, and the ski center —already fading— closed for good. Where the ice once shone, bare rock and the rusted remains of the old lift were all that was left.
The disappearance of the Chacaltaya glacier had enormous international repercussions and became one of the most cited cases of the impact of global warming on the tropical glaciers of the Andes. Media worldwide, scientists and environmental organizations took the case as a tangible and dramatic example of how climate change was transforming high-mountain ecosystems, with consequences too for the water supply of Andean cities. Chacaltaya thus went from a sporting curiosity to a symbol and a warning.
Alongside its sporting side, Chacaltaya had —and still has— a notable role in science, also thanks to its great altitude. For many decades an important high-altitude physics laboratory operated nearby, devoted above all to the study of cosmic rays: extremely high-energy particles arriving from space that are best studied high up, where the atmosphere filters less of that radiation.
The Chacaltaya Cosmic Physics Laboratory, set up above 5,000 meters, became an international reference center for this kind of research, drawing scientists from Bolivia and other countries. The exceptional altitude made it ideal for detecting and analyzing cosmic radiation and upper-atmosphere phenomena, at a time when these studies were central to particle physics. That scientific calling did not die with the glacier: researchers from the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory of the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) installed a station on the mountain for the international Global Atmosphere Watch project (run by the World Meteorological Organization), which measures greenhouse gases and aerosols from one of the highest and cleanest points in the southern hemisphere, contributing key data for understanding the very climate change that finished off the mountain's ice.
This scientific dimension adds another layer to Chacaltaya's singular history: a single mountain that was at once the highest ski run in the world, a cutting-edge physics laboratory at altitude and, finally, a witness to and symbol of climate change. Few mountains hold so many different stories.
The loss of the glacier also forced local tourism to reinvent itself. Researchers from the Bolivian Mountain Institute, together with teams from the University of Neuchâtel and the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL, studied how Chacaltaya's appeal to visitors changed once the snow was gone, and found the mountain kept its pulling power for other reasons: the panoramic view from the summit, the ease of access from La Paz, its usefulness as an acclimatization stop for those preparing to climb Huayna Potosí or other peaks, and, for many travelers from the lowlands, the chance to touch snow or residual ice for the first time in their lives. The local mountain guides, who used to live off skiing, were the quickest to reinvent their trade, adapting the visit to the new Chacaltaya: no longer a ski run but a lookout and an open-air classroom on climate change.
Today Chacaltaya is living out that new phase as a tourist destination and high-altitude lookout. Visitors coming up from La Paz can reach over 5,300 meters with minimal effort, take in the Cordillera Real and the altiplano, and find, in the old refuge and on the ice-free slope, the traces of all that past: the glory days of skiing, the science of the heights and the melancholy disappearance of the glacier.
