Hernandarias

📌Department
Hernandarias is a city in the department of Alto Paraná, in eastern Paraguay, on the right bank of the Paraná River, very close to Ciudad del Este and the Triple Frontier with Argentina and Brazil. It is, above all, the Paraguayan city most closely tied to the Itaipú Dam: much of the colossal binational hydroelectric plant is within its jurisdiction, which makes it a key point in the country's energy region.
📌Service city
Hernandarias is part of the great urban agglomeration of Alto Paraná, along with Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco and Minga Guazú. It has its own services (hotels, shops, restaurants), but the most complete base for lodging and getting around is usually Ciudad del Este, a few kilometers away, which has Guaraní International Airport (in Minga Guazú) and the Friendship Bridge to Brazil. From Hernandarias you reach Itaipú and the reservoir directly.
📌Best time to go
The best time to visit is autumn and winter (April to September), when the climate of eastern Paraguay is milder and drier. Summer (December to February) is very hot and humid, though the reservoir and the riverside resorts are attractive in those months. Visits to the Itaipú Dam are held all year round, with hours set by the binational entity.
📌Suggested days
Hernandarias can be seen in 1 day, especially combined with Ciudad del Este: a visit to the Itaipú Dam (with its tour and, subject to availability, the nighttime illumination), a stroll along the waterfront or the reservoir and, eventually, a pass through Itaipú's wildlife refuges. With 2 days you add time for the reservoir's resorts, the nature of the biological refuges and the proximity to the attractions of Alto Paraná and the Triple Frontier.

Hernandarias is the city of energy. Overlooking the Paraná River in eastern Paraguay, a few kilometers from Ciudad del Este and the Triple Frontier, this Alto Paraná town has one absolute protagonist that dominates its landscape and its economy: the Itaipú Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world, whose structure rises largely on its territory.

But Hernandarias is not only the colossal wall of the dam. The gigantic Itaipú reservoir created a new landscape of calm waters, with resorts, waterfronts and wildlife refuges created to conserve the biodiversity of Alto Paraná. The city thus combines the imprint of the great engineering work with spaces of nature and recreation by the water, in a region where Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil touch.

This guide covers Hernandarias with a practical eye: how to reach this eastern city, how to visit the Itaipú Dam and its biological refuges, what the reservoir and its resorts offer, and how to make the most of its proximity to Ciudad del Este, the Monday Falls and the Triple Frontier. A destination for marveling at the scale of great dams and enjoying the nature of Alto Paraná.

📖 History of Hernandarias

Hernandarias bears the name of Hernando Arias de Saavedra, known as 'Hernandarias', the first criollo (American-born) governor of the provinces of the Río de la Plata and Paraguay, in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The city, in the east of the country, underwent its great transformation in the second half of the twentieth century with the construction of the binational Itaipú Dam, built by Paraguay and Brazil on the Paraná River in the 1970s-1980s. The colossal work —for many years the largest hydroelectric plant in the world in energy generation— is located largely within Hernandarias' jurisdiction, which completely transformed the area's economy and landscape: the arrival of workers, infrastructure, an enormous reservoir and the consolidation of eastern Paraguay as an energy hub. 🗺️ What to see

1
Itaipú Dam — Panoramic Circuit
One of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world, a binational Paraguay-Brazil work on the Paraná, within Hernandarias' jurisdiction.
The Itaipú Dam is the great jewel of Hernandarias and one of the most impressive engineering works on the planet. Built jointly by Paraguay and Brazil on the Paraná River, it was for many years the hydroelectric plant with the greatest energy generation in the world, and it remains a colossus for the scale of its structures: a monumental dam wall, gigantic turbines and a spillway capable of handling enormous flows. The Itaipú Tourist Complex, on the Paraguayan side, organizes the Panoramic Circuit: a bus ride along the crest of the wall, with photo stops and views of the spillway and the main structures, suitable for all audiences. It's the option most chosen by visitors arriving from Hernandarias or Ciudad del Este. One of the most famous spectacles is the nighttime illumination of the dam (Itaipú Illuminated), on set days and times, when the structure is illuminated strikingly in front of the Visitor Reception Center. Getting there: from Hernandarias or Ciudad del Este, by road to the Itaipú Visitor Reception Center. Best time: year-round; it's worth booking and checking hours. Tips: visits have fixed hours (Monday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00, with departures every hour) and some options require a prior reservation and ID. Technical visit to the interior of Itaipú's powerhouse, with access to the control room and the turbines.
For those who want to go beyond the panoramic tour, Itaipú offers the Special Circuit: a technical, complete visit of approximately two hours, with access to the interior of the plant, the control room and the turbine shaft, guided by specialized staff who explain the plant's operation in detail. This option has limited spots and requires advance booking, plus meeting certain requirements (minimum age, ID, closed shoes). It's the recommended experience for those interested in the engineering and technical operation of the world's largest hydroelectric generator by production. Getting there: coordinated from the Itaipú Visitor Reception Center in Hernandarias. Best time: year-round, subject to spot availability. Tips: book several days in advance, especially in high season; bring ID and closed shoes, a safety requirement for entering the plant.

As part of its environmental program, the Itaipú entity created the Biological Refuge, a protected area around the reservoir aimed at conserving the biodiversity of Alto Paraná and compensating for the ecological impact of the great work. It's today one of the most interesting natural attractions in the Hernandarias area. The refuge protects wildlife and flora of the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest, one of the most threatened ecosystems in South America. It houses species like deer, capybaras, monkeys, woodland birds and other regional wildlife, with marked trails, a visitor center and a caiman breeding facility. Itaipú also runs environmental-education and conservation initiatives that can be seen on these visits. Getting there: inside the Itaipú Tourist Complex, near the Visitor Reception Center. Itaipú reservoir and resorts
The great artificial lake created by the dam, with resorts, waterfronts and calm waters for recreation.
The construction of the Itaipú Dam formed an immense reservoir on the Paraná River, a large artificial lake of calm waters that completely changed the geography of eastern Paraguay. Around this reservoir developed waterfronts, resorts and recreation areas that, especially in the warm months, become places of leisure and rest for the region's inhabitants and visitors. The resorts on the reservoir offer river beaches, areas for swimming, strolling and enjoying the water, with the immensity of the lake as a backdrop. They're popular spaces in summer, when the Alto Paraná heat invites you to seek the coolness of the water. Getting there: in the riverside area of Hernandarias and around the reservoir, by road. Best time: summer for the resorts; the rest of the year for waterfront strolls. Tips: ask locally which resorts are open and under what conditions; respect the water-safety instructions and the reservoir's rules, as it's infrastructure tied to the dam.
