📌Department
Maldonado (Uruguay). Punta Ballena is a panoramic headland in the department of Maldonado, on the Río de la Plata, located west of Punta del Este (about 15 km away) and near Piriápolis. It is famous, above all, for being home to Casapueblo, the spectacular sculptural work, studio, museum and hotel of the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, wedged onto the cliffs facing the sea. Punta Ballena combines that cultural icon with viewpoints, quiet beaches, the nearby Laguna del Sauce and one of the most famous sunsets on the Uruguayan coast
📌Service town
Punta Ballena relies on nearby Punta del Este (about 15 km away) and on the city of Maldonado (the departmental capital) for the larger services. The Punta del Este airport (Laguna del Sauce, PDP) is very close, right by the Laguna del Sauce, and operates mostly in season; Carrasco (Montevideo, MVD) is the country's main air gateway. The area has tourist services (hotels, restaurants, Casapueblo), but for supplies and larger services it's best to use nearby Punta del Este or Maldonado. It connects via the coastal road
📌Best time to go
Summer (December to March) is the high season, when Punta Ballena, Casapueblo and its beaches receive large numbers of visitors, with all services running; the sunset at Casapueblo is one of the most crowded rituals. Spring and autumn are ideal for enjoying the place more calmly, with good weather and better prices, without the crowds. Winter is quiet and cool, with less movement, but the beauty of the headland and the sunsets can be enjoyed all year round
📌Suggested days
With half a day to 1 day you cover the essentials: the visit to Casapueblo and its museum, the sunset with the 'Ceremony of the Sun', the headland viewpoints and a nearby beach. With 1 to 2 days you can add tours of the Laguna del Sauce, getaways to Punta del Este and Piriápolis, and full enjoyment of the area. Punta Ballena is usually visited as an excursion from Punta del Este or Piriápolis, or as a quiet base for touring the western coast of Maldonado

Punta Ballena is one of those places where nature and art merge unforgettably. This panoramic headland in the department of Maldonado, on the Río de la Plata and about 15 kilometers west of Punta del Este, rises above the sea offering spectacular views of the coast. But what made it world-famous is Casapueblo, the major work of the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró: a white, sculptural, labyrinthine construction, wedged onto the cliffs like an inhabitable sculpture facing the ocean.
Casapueblo —studio, museum, hotel and, above all, a total work of art— is the soul of Punta Ballena. Páez Vilaró built it up with his own hands over decades, without blueprints, as a sculpture to live in, inspired by clay ovens and Mediterranean architecture. Its white, curving forms, its stepped terraces and its labyrinthine corners descend toward the sea and create one of the most photographed settings in the country. Every sunset, the famous 'Ceremony of the Sun' calls visitors to bid the sun farewell with words by the artist himself.
This guide walks you through the essentials of Punta Ballena with a practical and warm eye: the visit to Casapueblo and its museum, the sunset ritual, the headland viewpoints, the nearby beaches and the Laguna del Sauce, how to get there and get around, and how to combine it with Punta del Este and Piriápolis. It is a destination where landscape, art and the light of sunset come together in a unique experience of the Uruguayan coast.
📖 History of Punta Ballena
Punta Ballena is a rocky headland on the Río de la Plata, in the department of Maldonado, west of Punta del Este. Its name evokes the shape of the landform that juts into the water. For much of the 20th century it was an area of rugged, panoramic landscape, valued for its views and its nature. Its tourist and cultural history was marked forever by the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró (1923-2014), painter, sculptor, ceramist and musician, who from the 1950s-1960s began to raise on these cliffs his most famous work: Casapueblo. Inspired by the mud nests of the hornero (the bird that builds its nest of mud) and by the Mediterranean architecture of the Greek islands and Ibiza, Páez Vilaró built Casapueblo over several decades, without blueprints, modeling it as an inhabitable sculpture of white, curving forms that descends toward the sea. The work grew organically until it became studio, home, museum and hotel, and one of the cultural and tourist icons of Uruguay. After the artist's death in 2014, Casapueblo keeps operating as a museum, hotel and cultural space, and the 'Ceremony of the Sun' at sunset keeps his memory alive. Casapueblo
The sculptural work, museum, studio and hotel of Carlos Páez Vilaró on the cliffs, a cultural icon of Uruguay.
Casapueblo is, without dispute, the great treasure of Punta Ballena and one of the cultural and tourist icons of Uruguay. It is the major work of the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró: a white, sculptural, labyrinthine construction, wedged onto the cliffs of Punta Ballena, facing the Río de la Plata. More than a building, it is an inhabitable sculpture, a total work of art that the artist built up with his own hands over decades, without blueprints, letting it grow organically.
Inspired by the mud nests of the hornero and by Mediterranean architecture —the white houses of the Greek islands and Ibiza—, Casapueblo unfolds a world of curving forms, stepped terraces, staircases, nooks and corners that descend toward the sea. Today it works as a museum and studio (with work by Páez Vilaró), hotel and café-restaurant, and can be toured to get to know the work and life of the artist, as well as to enjoy the spectacular views from its terraces.
The visit to the museum lets you enter the creative universe of Páez Vilaró —painter, sculptor, ceramist, musician and writer— and understand the meaning of this unique work. The terraces of Casapueblo also offer one of the best viewpoints on the coast, especially at sunset. It opens every day of the year from 10 a.m. until sunset.
ℹ️ Distance: At the top of the Punta Ballena headland (car or excursion from Punta del Este or Piriápolis) · Hours: Every day, from 10 a.m. until sunset · Admission: $600 UYU general public; $500 UYU residents and over-65s; children under 12 free (source: casapueblo.com.uy, verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (more if you stay for sunset)

The Ceremony of the Sun (sunset at Casapueblo)
The sunset ritual on the terraces of Casapueblo, with words by Páez Vilaró himself bidding the sun farewell.
The 'Ceremony of the Sun' is one of the most moving and famous rituals on the Uruguayan coast, and one of the great reasons to visit Punta Ballena at sunset. Every afternoon, visitors gather on the terraces of Casapueblo to watch the sun fall over the Río de la Plata, in an incomparable setting of white forms, sea and glowing sky.
The climactic moment comes when, with the recorded voice of Carlos Páez Vilaró himself, his poem dedicated to the sun is recited, a poetic farewell to the star that sinks into the horizon. That combination of the artist's words, the sculptural architecture of Casapueblo and the golden light of sunset creates a unique, almost magical experience that moves those who live it. It is a tribute to light, art and nature, and keeps alive the memory of Casapueblo's creator.
The Ceremony of the Sun has become a must-see classic for visitors, especially in season, when the terraces fill with people awaiting the moment. It's best to arrive early to get a good spot and enjoy the setting before the sun goes down.
ℹ️ Distance: Terraces of Casapueblo, Punta Ballena · Best time to go: All year; clear sunsets are the most spectacular · Admission: Included in the museum admission to Casapueblo ($600 UYU general, $500 UYU residents/65+; source: casapueblo.com.uy, verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (around sunset)

Viewpoints of the Punta Ballena headland
The panoramic points of the headland, with sweeping views of the Río de la Plata, the coast and Punta del Este.
The Punta Ballena headland is, in itself, a great natural viewpoint over the Río de la Plata. Its elevated form, which juts into the water, offers sweeping and spectacular views of the coast, the sea and, in the distance, the Punta del Este peninsula. Touring its panoramic points is one of the great attractions of the place, beyond the visit to Casapueblo.
From the top of the headland, especially on clear days, you take in the immensity of the Río de la Plata and the contrast between the cliffs, the vegetation and the water. It is an ideal setting to enjoy the landscape, take photos and breathe the sea air. Sunset, as throughout the area, is the most beautiful moment, when the golden light bathes the headland and the water.
The viewpoints of Punta Ballena complement the Casapueblo experience and let you appreciate why this headland was always valued for its panoramic beauty. It is a place to stop, contemplate and enjoy one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Maldonado.

The quiet beaches at the foot of the headland, with calm waters and a natural setting, calmer than those of Punta del Este.
At the foot of the Punta Ballena headland stretch quiet beaches in a natural setting, with generally calm waters of the Río de la Plata, offering a calmer and more peaceful alternative to the crowded beaches of Punta del Este. Framed by the headland and the coastal vegetation, they are a pleasant place for a relaxed beach day, far from the bustle.
These beaches, with light-colored sand and a natural landscape, are ideal for families and for those seeking tranquility. The headland setting gives them a special frame, different from that of the large open beaches of the area. In season they have services and are a good complement to the visit to Casapueblo and the viewpoints.
The combination of a quiet beach, a panoramic headland and the closeness of Casapueblo makes Punta Ballena a complete destination, where you can enjoy the sea, nature and art in one place. The nearby Laguna del Sauce also adds a natural attraction to the area.

The lagoon and its surroundings are a good place to enjoy nature, watch birds, walk and appreciate the contrast between the fresh water of the lagoon and the nearby coast of the Río de la Plata. It is a lesser-known setting than the beaches, but one that adds an interesting natural dimension to the Punta Ballena area.
For those touring the western coast of Maldonado, the Laguna del Sauce is a point of interest that adds to Casapueblo, the viewpoints and the beaches, completing a varied tour of one of the most beautiful corners of the department. The closeness of Piriápolis, to the west, lets you extend the outing.

Cliffs and eucalyptus woods of Punta Ballena
The rugged landscape of cliffs and woodland surrounding Casapueblo, with trails among the trees to the edge of the cliff.
Around Casapueblo, the Punta Ballena headland keeps a rugged natural landscape of cliffs, rocks and a wood of eucalyptus and native vegetation that goes down toward the sea. Walking the trails that border the property, between the woodland and the edge of the cliff, is a quiet way to prolong the visit and discover different angles of the coast, far from the bustle of the museum terraces at peak hours.
This natural setting was, precisely, what drew Carlos Páez Vilaró to the area: the combination of cliffs, open sea and wild vegetation gave him the perfect scene for his work. The trails also connect with lesser-known viewpoints and with accesses to the beach at the foot of the headland, ideal for those seeking a short walk with views of the Río de la Plata without the sunset crowds.
It is a free and simple outing, recommended for complementing the visit to Casapueblo with more direct contact with the natural landscape that made Punta Ballena famous long before the museum existed.
ℹ️ Distance: Around Casapueblo, on the headland (on foot) · Best time to go: All year; mornings and mid-afternoon to avoid the heat and the sunset crowds · Admission: Free (open-access trails) · Duration: 30 to 60 minutes
