Minas is the capital of the department of Lavalleja and one of the most charming hill cities in Uruguay. Nestled in a valley surrounded by hills, it's part of the system of the Sierras del Este (Cuchilla Grande) and is the gateway to a landscape unusual for the country: hills, waterfalls, caves and crystal-clear streams that break with the flat image of the Uruguayan prairie.
The city combines its role as a quiet interior capital with a strong identity tied to nature and popular faith. A few kilometers away rises Cerro Arequita, with its cave and its lagoon, and very close is the Cerro and Parque del Verdún, home to one of the most massive religious pilgrimages in the country. Minas is also famous for its sweets and confections, especially the tradition of the famous local candies and desserts.
This guide explores Minas and its sierras with a practical eye: the city core and its square, the excursions to the Arequita and Verdún hills, the waterfalls and streams of the surroundings, the Salto del Penitente, and how to organize a sierra getaway from Montevideo, from which Minas is a little over two hours away. An ideal destination for those seeking nature, hiking and an interior air near the capital.
Minas was founded at the end of the 18th century (in 1783) around the hilly region of eastern Uruguay, and owes its name to the old mining operations of the area. It's the home city of figures such as the caudillo Juan Antonio Lavalleja —who gives the department its name— and was tied to the great events of the Oriental independence, such as the feat of the Thirty-Three Orientals. 🗺️ What to see
1
Cerro Arequita and Colón Cave
An emblematic flat-topped hill with a large natural cave and the Arequita lagoon at its feet.
Cerro Arequita, about 10 km north of Minas, is one of the natural icons of the department. It's a flat-topped hill (a mesa) covered with woodland and vegetation, on whose slopes opens the Colón Cave, a large natural cavern that for a long time was associated with legends and with a characteristic outflow of bats at dusk. From its heights you get wide views of the hilly landscape of Lavalleja.
At the foot of the hill extends the Arequita Lagoon, a body of water surrounded by nature that adds appeal to the area and offers a peaceful setting for rest and photography. The hill-cave-lagoon combination is one of the classic outings of Minas, accessible by car and with trails to explore on foot. You can climb the hill freely on a well-signposted rural road, but to enter the cave you need to pay admission and go down with a guide, since it's a private property managed by the Alzugaray family, who have for generations been dedicated to conserving this fragile ecosystem.
How to get there: about 10 km from Minas on a road heading north, well signposted. Best time: spring and autumn, with a mild climate for walking; the hill and the cave are only visited on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Tips: bring trekking shoes, water and a flashlight if you go to the cave; there's a rest stop and lookout at the foot of the hill, and a nearby municipal campground.
ℹ️ Distance: About 10 km north of Minas (car) · Best time: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; spring and autumn for the climate · Admission: Climbing the hill: free (open rural road). A hill with the image of the Virgin, home to a great annual pilgrimage every 19 April.
A few kilometers from Minas rises Cerro del Verdún, crowned by an image of the Virgin and by a chapel, a place of great popular devotion. Every 19 April one of the most massive religious pilgrimages in Uruguay is held there, bringing together tens of thousands of people who climb the hill to honor the Virgin of Verdún, in a day that mixes faith, tradition and popular gathering.
Beyond the pilgrimage date, the hill is a privileged lookout over the valley and the city of Minas, and the ascent path —with its stations of the cross— is a prized walk throughout the year. The landscaped surroundings and the views make Verdún a recommended visit for any traveler, believer or not.
How to get there: very close to the city of Minas, accessible by car. Best time: year-round; 19 April to experience the pilgrimage (with large crowds). Tips: comfortable shoes for the climb; on the pilgrimage date, be prepared for a lot of people and saturated services.

Salto del Penitente Park
A waterfall and adventure center in the heart of the sierra, with a zip line, rappelling and hiking.
The Salto del Penitente is one of the best-known waterfalls in the hilly area, located about 25 km from Minas. The water of the stream falls from a considerable height, forming a waterfall that, surrounded by woodland and rocks, offers a refreshing and very photogenic landscape. The place developed as a tourism and adventure center, with services and infrastructure for visitors: a rest stop, a camping area and organized activities.
Around the waterfall there are active-tourism offerings —such as a two-section zip line (canopy) of almost 200 meters each, rappelling and hiking— that make the most of the hilly terrain, as well as spaces for rest and dining. The zip line is available on weekends and holidays, and requires no prior training, suitable for all ages. It's an ideal outing for combining nature, walking and some adrenaline, very popular on a weekend getaway from Montevideo or from Minas itself.

It's a good example of how Minas integrates its hill identity even within the urban core itself.

What can you do at Cerro Arequita?+
You can climb the hill for free on a signposted rural road and enjoy the views from its flat top, as well as get to know the nearby Arequita Lagoon. To enter the Colón Cave you need to pay admission (approx. UYU 250-300 per person, in cash) and do so with a guide, since it's a private property; it's only visited on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (verified July 2026).

Admission to the park costs approximately UYU 30-65 per person, and the zip line (two sections of almost 200 meters each) is around UYU 250-450 per person depending on the combination of sections, available on weekends and holidays. It's suitable for all ages and requires no prior experience. It pays to book by phone and check rates when you visit.
How do you get to Minas?+
The most common way is via Route 8 from Montevideo, about 120 km (between 2 and 2.5 hours) by car or bus (about US$ 10-14). The ticket is paid in cash or bought online (the STM card does not apply in the interior). It also connects with Maldonado, Punta del Este and Treinta y Tres in a little over 1.5 to 2 hours (verified July 2026).
Do I need a car to visit Minas and the sierras?+
For the city itself no —the center, the square and Parque Rodó are walkable—, but for the sierras practically yes. The natural attractions (Cerro Arequita, Salto del Penitente, Cerro del Verdún) are scattered and have no scheduled buses: you get there by car, by taxi/remís by negotiating the round trip, or by booking an excursion. If you come without a car, the best option is a remís for the day or a tour from Minas. The inter-departmental bus schedules are seen on the Moovit app or Google Maps, and the ticket is paid in cash (verified July 2026).
What's the best time to go?+
Spring and autumn are ideal for the mild climate, perfect for walking the sierras. In summer it can be hot and in winter the mornings are cool, but the destination is enjoyed year-round; for the Salto del Penitente zip line, go on a weekend or holiday, which is when it operates.
Where does the name Minas come from?+
From the historic mining work of the area. The city, founded in 1783, is also the cradle of the caudillo Juan Antonio Lavalleja, who gives the department its name and was a protagonist of the Liberating Crusade of the Thirty-Three Orientals.
