📌Department
Maldonado (Uruguay). Maldonado is the capital city of the department of the same name and one of the most important historic cities in the country, founded in the 18th century as a Spanish stronghold. Unlike nearby, glamorous Punta del Este (just a few kilometers away, practically merged with it), Maldonado is the area's 'real' city: the one that lives year-round, with its colonial heritage, its services, its everyday life and its permanent population, while Punta del Este concentrates the seasonal tourism. Together they form the great urban and tourist hub of eastern Uruguay
📌Service town
Maldonado is, precisely, the service city of the whole region: it concentrates hospitals and clinics, supermarkets, banks, shopping centers, the area's bus terminal and the departmental administration, providing year-round support to Punta del Este and the surrounding resorts. Punta del Este International Airport (Laguna del Sauce, PDP) is a few kilometers away and operates mostly in season; Carrasco (Montevideo) is the main air gateway the rest of the year. Its terminal connects with Montevideo, the coast and the interior
📌Best time to visit
As a city that lives year-round, Maldonado can be visited in any season, though its surroundings are best enjoyed in the warm months. Summer (December to March) finds it at its busiest, benefiting from the tourist influx of Punta del Este, with all services at full swing. Spring and autumn are ideal for touring its historic core in good weather and with fewer people. Winter is quiet and cool, perfect for getting to know its heritage calmly and as an affordable base for exploring the region
📌Suggested days
Maldonado is well seen in half a day or a day, touring its historic core: the Plaza San Fernando, the Cathedral, the Watchtower, the Dragoons' Barracks and its museums. But its greatest value is as a base for the whole region: staying here (cheaper than in Punta del Este) you can dedicate several days to touring Punta del Este and its beaches, Punta Ballena and Casapueblo, La Barra, Manantiales and José Ignacio, Piriápolis and the hills, and even reach as far as Rocha. It's the ideal logistical center of eastern Uruguay

In the shadow of Punta del Este's worldwide fame lives Maldonado, its sister city and, in many ways, its authentic counterpart. If Punta del Este is the resort of glamour and the season, Maldonado is the real city: the one that beats year-round, with its colonial history, its square, its cathedral, its people and its everyday life. Founded in the 18th century as a Spanish stronghold, it's one of the cities with the most historical heritage in Uruguay and the true nerve center of the whole eastern region.
Its historic core, around the Plaza San Fernando, preserves jewels of the colonial past and of the independence era: the Cathedral, the Watchtower that scanned the horizon looking for ships, the Dragoons' Barracks that housed the troops, museums and mansions with history. It's a heritage that surprises those who only know the beach side of the area, and that tells the long journey of Maldonado as a defensive bastion, a scene of the independence struggles and, finally, a departmental capital.
This guide explores Maldonado with a practical and warm eye: what to see in its historic core, how to make the most of it as an affordable and strategic base for exploring all of eastern Uruguay, and how to get to know its heritage and its real life. Maldonado is the smart choice for those who want to enjoy the region —Punta del Este, the beaches, the hills— without paying the prices of glamour, staying in a city with soul, history and all services at hand.
📖 History of Maldonado
Maldonado is one of the historic cities of Uruguay and its origin goes back to the mid-18th century, amid the dispute between the crowns of Spain and Portugal for control of the Banda Oriental. To strengthen the Spanish presence in the region and protect the entrance to the Río de la Plata against Portuguese pressure, the governor José Joaquín de Viana founded the town of Maldonado around 1755-1757. The name comes, according to tradition, from a settler or captain named Maldonado tied to the area since the early times of exploration. The city was born with a military vocation: a stronghold, with its barracks (the Dragoons' Barracks), its batteries and its watchtower (the Watchtower) to detect ships on the horizon. During the English Invasions, Maldonado was taken by British troops in 1806-1807. In the independence wars it was the scene of the conflicts of the era. Over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries it consolidated as the capital of the department of Maldonado and center of a cattle-raising and agricultural region. The great transformation came with the tourism development of neighboring Punta del Este, which turned the whole area into the country's main tourist hub and Maldonado into its service city, which grows and develops to the rhythm of tourism. The full history of the city and the region is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see
1
Plaza San Fernando and Maldonado Cathedral
The historic heart of the city: the founding square surrounded by its cathedral and heritage buildings.
The Plaza San Fernando is the historic and social heart of Maldonado, the founding square around which the colonial city grew. It's a pleasant, tree-shaded square, surrounded by heritage buildings, that keeps the air of the main squares of the old Spanish towns and that is still today the meeting and reference point of the city center.
Presiding over the square is Maldonado Cathedral (Church of San Fernando de Maldonado), the city's main church, whose construction began in colonial times and continued for a long time. It's a sober and elegant building of great historical value, dominating the old core and constituting one of the city's architectural landmarks. Its interior and its facade reflect the long religious and urban history of Maldonado.
Around the square and in the surrounding streets is concentrated the heritage of the historic core: old mansions, public buildings and several of the museums and monuments that tell the history of the city. Touring the Plaza San Fernando and its surroundings on foot is the best way to discover the historic and authentic face of Maldonado, so different from the beach glamour of neighboring Punta del Este.
How to get there: in the heart of Maldonado's historic center; on foot, by bus or taxi/app. Best time: any moment; by day to tour the core and visit the cathedral. Tips: the square is the ideal starting point for a walking circuit through the historical heritage (Watchtower, Dragoons' Barracks, museums), all a short distance away.
ℹ️ Distance: Center of Maldonado (on foot from any point in the historic core) · Best time: Year-round; by day to visit the cathedral · Admission: Free (open access to the square and the cathedral) · Duration: 30 to 45 minutes
2
The Watchtower (Torre del Vigía)
The historic colonial watchtower (1797-1800) from which the horizon was scanned for enemy ships.
The Watchtower is one of the most characteristic and beloved monuments of Maldonado, a symbol of its colonial and military past. It's a brick tower about 13 meters high, built between 1797 and 1800 by order of the viceroy of the Río de la Plata, from whose height the watchmen scanned the horizon of the Río de la Plata and the ocean looking for ships, whether friend or enemy, in a strategic area for the defense of the estuary's entrance and always threatened by rival powers and privateers.
The tower, of sober plan and appearance, rises at the corner of Solís, Rafael Pérez del Puerto, Zelmar Michelini and Arturo Santana streets, in the heart of the historic core, and today it can be visited: from its terrace you dominate the landscape of Maldonado, one of the highest points of the old city. It recalls the times when the safety of the city depended on the attentive gaze of a watchman scanning the sea.
It's one of the must-stops of the city's historical circuit, along with the Plaza San Fernando, the Cathedral and the Dragoons' Barracks, all a short distance from each other. The Watchtower condenses the defensive and military character that gave rise to Maldonado.
How to get there: in the historic core, steps from the Plaza San Fernando; on foot. Best time: by day, during visiting hours. Tips: check the terrace access hours with the Intendencia de Maldonado; combine it with the rest of the heritage circuit of the center, all walkable.
ℹ️ Distance: Historic core, steps from the Plaza San Fernando (on foot) · Best time: By day, during visiting hours (check with Intendencia de Maldonado) · Admission: Free (open access; check the terrace hours when you visit) · Duration: 20 to 30 minutes

Dragoons' Barracks (Cuartel de Dragones)
The imposing 18th-century colonial barracks that housed the cavalry troops, today a cultural and heritage space.
The Dragoons' Barracks is one of the most imposing and significant historic buildings of Maldonado and of all colonial Uruguay. Built in the Spanish era (18th century), it was the barracks that housed the Dragoons, the cavalry troops charged with the defense of the region. It's a large stone military structure, with its courtyards, its rooms and its sober and robust architecture, a testimony of the Maldonado stronghold.
Throughout its history, the Dragoons' Barracks was the scene of numerous episodes of the military and political life of the region, from the colonial era to the times of the independence struggles. Its heritage value is enormous, as one of the best-preserved ensembles of colonial military architecture in the country.
Today the Dragoons' Barracks has been converted, fully or partially, into a cultural and heritage space, which hosts activities, exhibitions and offices tied to the culture and memory of Maldonado. Touring it lets you get a close look at the military architecture of the era and understand the military origin of the city. It's an essential visit on the historical circuit.
How to get there: in the historic core of Maldonado, near the Plaza San Fernando; on foot. Best time: by day, during visiting hours (check days and hours with the Intendencia). Tips: it's part of the heritage tour along with the Watchtower, the Cathedral and the museums of the center.
ℹ️ Distance: Historic core, near the Plaza San Fernando (on foot) · Best time: By day, during cultural-activity hours (check) · Admission: Free (access to the building and cultural activities; check hours) · Duration: 30 to 45 minutes

Francisco Mazzoni Regional Museum
The old colonial mansion of professor Mazzoni, today a museum with the history, art and traditions of Maldonado.
The Francisco Mazzoni Regional Museum is one of the most important and traditional museums in the city, installed in what was the residence of professor R. Francisco Mazzoni, who over his life assembled a vast collection that he donated to the State in 1969. Located at 789 Ituzaingó street, in the heart of the historic core, the museum brings together period furniture, historical objects, documents and pieces that reconstruct the everyday life, the customs and the heritage of Maldonado and its department.
It's an excellent way to understand the past of Maldonado, much deeper and older than the modern tourist image of the area suggests. The mansion itself, with its period architecture, is already worth the visit.
The city also has other cultural and museum spaces, some tied to art and local history, distributed around the old core. Touring them completes the heritage circuit and offers a view of the historical identity of Maldonado, complementing the great monuments (the Cathedral, the Watchtower, the Dragoons' Barracks).

The world-famous resort, minutes from Maldonado, with its Mansa and Brava beaches, Los Dedos and the port.
Just 10-15 minutes from Maldonado is Punta del Este, the most famous resort in Uruguay and one of the tourist icons of South America. Its peninsula concentrates the Mansa beach (calm waters, facing the Río de la Plata) and the Brava beach (with waves, facing the ocean and home to the Los Dedos sculpture), as well as a lively marina, promenade, casinos and a top-level dining and shopping offer.

The oldest resort in Uruguay, at the foot of the San Antonio and Pan de Azúcar hills, a little over half an hour away.
About 40 minutes west of Maldonado is Piriápolis, the first planned resort in Uruguay, founded in the early 20th century by Francisco Piria. Its promenade with a rose-garden frontage, the imposing Argentino Hotel and the hills that surround it —Cerro San Antonio, with its panoramic lookout accessible by car or chairlift, and Cerro Pan de Azúcar, the highest point in the area— make it a different destination within eastern Uruguay, with more history and nature than fashionable beach.
It's a classic day trip from Maldonado, ideal for combining the promenade, Cerro San Antonio (with its cross and its 360° view) and, if time allows, a climb up the Pan de Azúcar. You can also continue on to the Castillo de Piria.

To the east of Maldonado, passing La Barra and Manantiales, you reach José Ignacio, an old fishing village that became one of the most exclusive and photogenic destinations in Uruguay, with its lighthouse, its quiet beaches and an international-level dining offer. A bit further, the Garzón Lagoon Bridge —circular, with a single lane that forces you to slow down and enjoy the view— crosses into the department of Rocha and is a photographic attraction in itself.
It's a full-day excursion from Maldonado, ideal for those who want to see the most sophisticated face of the Uruguayan coast, eat well and enjoy less crowded beaches than those of Punta del Este.
