Durazno is a city in central Uruguay, capital of the department of the same name, on the banks of the Yí River. Located practically in the geographical heart of the country, it's a communications hub of the interior and a typical Uruguayan city of peaceful pace, tied to farming life, the river shores and a strong cultural tradition.
It owes its greatest national fame to the National and International Folklore Festival of Durazno, one of the most important musical and cultural events in Uruguay, which every summer —generally in early February, in the Parque de la Hispanidad— brings together artists and audiences from all over the country and the region around folklore, popular music and the traditional Gaucho Gathering. Beyond the festival, the city offers attractions tied to the Yí River —beaches, waterfront, historic bridges and zoo— and a country setting ideal for rural tourism.
This guide explores Durazno with a practical eye: the city's core and its squares, the shores and beaches of the Yí River, the Folklore Festival, the rural tourism of the surroundings, and how to get there from Montevideo and other cities. An authentic, central and well-connected interior destination, ideal for getting to know deep Uruguay and its popular culture.
Durazno was founded in 1821 under the name San Pedro del Durazno, in the center of the eastern territory, and grew as a service city for a farming region on the banks of the Yí River. Its central location made it a hub of roads and, later, of highways and railway, with a key role in the communication of the country's interior. Over the course of the 20th century it consolidated as a departmental capital and center of a vast cattle-raising and agricultural area, while the Yí River gave it a riverside identity that translated into beaches, a waterfront and historic bridges, such as the so-called Puente Viejo, inaugurated in 1903. In the second half of the 20th century the National and International Folklore Festival was born, which over the decades turned Durazno into a true capital of popular music and gaucho tradition in Uruguay. Among the most beloved symbols of Durazno are its historic bridges over the Yí River. The so-called Puente Viejo ('Old Bridge') is a submersible road bridge, built and inaugurated in 1903 under the direction of engineer Federico Capurro: its peculiarity is that, in the river's great floods, it is covered by the water, an uncommon feature that made it a local icon and a subject of curiosity for visitors. Nearby is the railway bridge, another emblematic structure that testifies to Durazno's role as a railway hub of the interior in the 20th century.
