🇩🇴 Dominican Republic · Central Mountain Range

Jarabacoa

📌Province
La Vega, in the very heart of the Central Mountain Range of the Dominican Republic. Jarabacoa sits at about 500 meters above sea level, surrounded by mountains, pine forests, rivers and waterfalls, and is known as 'the City of Eternal Spring' for its cool, pleasant climate all year round, very different from the tropical heat of the coast.
📌Best time to go
Jarabacoa can be enjoyed year-round thanks to its cool mountain climate. The dry season (November to April) is ideal for hiking and the Pico Duarte trek, with firmer trails. In the rainy season (May to October) the waterfalls carry more water and the landscape is greener, though the trails can be slippery. Always bring something warm: at night and in the early hours the temperatures drop noticeably for the Caribbean.
📌Suggested days
2 to 3 days are enough to combine the waterfalls, rafting on the Yaque del Norte and some other adventure (paragliding, canyoning, horseback riding). Those planning to climb Pico Duarte should add between 2 and 4 additional days for the full expedition from La Ciénaga de Manabao.
📌Currency
Dominican peso (DOP). US dollars are also frequently accepted at shops and tour operators, but it's best to carry cash in pesos for meals, waterfall entries and local transport.

Jarabacoa is the capital of mountain ecotourism in the Dominican Republic, known as 'the City of Eternal Spring' for its cool, pleasant climate all year round. Located in the very heart of the Central Mountain Range, at about 500 meters of altitude and surrounded by pine forests, rivers and mountains, it offers a total contrast with the beachy Caribbean: here the plan is nature, adventure and mountain air.

It's the Dominican destination par excellence for adventure sports: rafting on the Yaque del Norte River (the longest in the country), spectacular waterfalls like the Jimenoa and Baiguate falls, paragliding, canyoning, horseback riding and hiking. Jarabacoa is also one of the main departure points for the ascent of Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean.

The area combines the adventure offering with the relaxed atmosphere of a mountain town, farms, coffee groves and country houses where Dominicans from the capital go to cool off. This guide gathers the practical details for organizing the visit: which waterfalls and activities not to miss, how much they cost, how to get there, where to sleep and eat, and how to make the most of the natural setting of the Central Mountain Range.

📖 History of Jarabacoa

The name Jarabacoa is of Taíno origin and is usually translated as 'place where waters abound', in reference to its numerous rivers and waterfalls. The area was populated from pre-Columbian times and then developed as an agricultural and mountain region, specialized in coffee growing thanks to its temperate climate. Its coolness made it, already in the 20th century, a summer retreat for the well-to-do families of Santo Domingo and Santiago and, later, with the rise of ecotourism, the country's adventure-tourism capital, thanks to its rapids, its waterfalls and its closeness to Pico Duarte. Jimenoa Waterfall
An impressive waterfall near Jarabacoa, one of the most photographed in the country.
The Jimenoa Waterfall is the most famous waterfall in Jarabacoa and one of the most impressive in the Dominican Republic. The best-known, the Jimenoa Uno Waterfall, drops about 35 meters down a rock wall into a pool, in a jungle setting reached after a walk whose final 100 meters cross a suspension bridge of logs and ropes over the Jimenoa River, part of the experience. There's also the Jimenoa Dos (or Lower) Waterfall, with a different access. The spectacle of the water plunging through the vegetation, with the mist and the roar of the falls, is truly overwhelming. The area gained international fame for having appeared in film scenes (among them, the movie Jurassic Park). Swimming in the pool may or may not be permitted depending on conditions and water flow; it's best to follow local and park-ranger instructions. Getting there: a few kilometers from Jarabacoa, with signposted access; the suspension bridges are part of the route to Jimenoa Uno. Best time: year-round; greater flow after the rains.
