Higüey

📌City
Salvaleón de Higüey, known simply as Higüey, is the capital of La Altagracia province, at the far east of the Dominican Republic. It's one of the oldest cities in the country (founded at the dawn of colonization) and, above all, the nation's great religious center: it's home to the Basilica of Our Lady of La Altagracia, the country's main Marian shrine and a pilgrimage destination. Unlike the beach tourist hubs, Higüey is an inland city, commercial, vibrant and of an authentically Dominican character, about 45–50 km from Punta Cana.
📌Service city
Higüey is itself a service city for the whole province: it has hospitals, a university, banks, markets, shops and transport terminals. The area's air gateway is Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), about 45 minutes away by car. Higüey is well connected by road with Punta Cana, Bávaro, La Romana and, via the Coral highway, with Santo Domingo. It's an important transport hub of the east, with guaguas (buses) and services to the whole country.
📌Best time to go
Higüey can be visited year-round, since its main appeal is cultural and religious, not beach-related. The dry season (December to April) offers sunnier, more pleasant days for walking the city. For pilgrims, the key date is January 21, the day of Our Lady of La Altagracia, the country's patron saint, when the basilica receives multitudes of faithful from all over the Dominican Republic in one of the country's most important religious celebrations. Keep in mind that on that day and the nearby dates the city fills up.
📌Suggested days
Higüey is usually visited on a half-day or full-day excursion from the resorts of Punta Cana, Bávaro or Uvero Alto, combining the Basilica of La Altagracia, the old colonial church of San Dionisio, the market and local life. That visit is enough to see the essentials. For those who want a deeper immersion into local culture, commerce and authentic Dominican cuisine, a full day lets you experience the pulse of a real eastern city, very different from the atmosphere of the tourist complexes.

Higüey is the spiritual heart of the Dominican Republic and one of its oldest cities. A few kilometers from the resort world of Punta Cana, it offers a completely different experience: that of an authentic, commercial and bustling inland city, where the real pulse of the Dominican east beats, far from the beaches and the all-inclusives. Its great magnet is the Basilica of Our Lady of La Altagracia, the country's main religious shrine and a pilgrimage destination for faithful from all over the nation.

The city combines its deep religious meaning with its historical root: here one of the oldest colonial churches in the Americas (San Dionisio) is preserved, and the Taíno origin of the region, the chiefdom of Higüey, is remembered. Walking through Higüey means immersing yourself in markets, shops, Creole food and the popular devotion surrounding La Altagracia, patron of Dominicans, whose image draws multitudes every January 21 in one of the country's most important celebrations.

This guide covers Higüey with a practical eye: what to see, starting with its imposing modern basilica, its colonial history and its local life; how to get there from Punta Cana and the eastern resorts; how to get around and where to eat authentic Dominican food. It's the ideal getaway for those who want to add a dose of culture, faith and genuine Dominican identity to their beach vacation.

📖 History of Higüey

Higüey is one of the oldest cities in the Dominican Republic and in all the Americas. Before the conquest, the region was the center of the Taíno chiefdom of Higüey, one of the five great domains of the island of Hispaniola, ruled by figures such as the cacica Higüanamá and the cacique Cotubanamá. After the arrival of the Spanish, the area was the setting for harsh clashes and Taíno resistance in the early 16th century. The Spanish city, Salvaleón de Higüey, was founded around 1502 by Juan de Esquivel and Juan Ponce de León (who would later be the conqueror of Puerto Rico and 'discoverer' of Florida), becoming one of the first European settlements on the continent. Higüey soon acquired a deeply religious character, tied to the devotion to Our Lady of La Altagracia, whose image, according to tradition, arrived very early and became an object of great veneration; the old church of San Dionisio (16th century) was its first great shrine. Over the centuries, the devotion to La Altagracia spread throughout the country until it made her the spiritual patron of Dominicans, and Higüey their religious capital. In the 20th century, to accommodate the multitudes of pilgrims, the monumental Basilica of La Altagracia was built, whose construction began in 1954 and was inaugurated in 1971. Today Higüey combines its colonial and Taíno past with its role as a great pilgrimage center and commercial city of the east. The full story is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see

1
Basilica of Our Lady of La Altagracia
The great Dominican national shrine, an imposing modern basilica of curved arches, a pilgrimage destination from all over the country.
The Basilica of Our Lady of La Altagracia is the most important monument in Higüey and the main religious shrine of the Dominican Republic. It's a temple of modern, monumental architecture, very different from the country's colonial churches: its design, the work of the French architects Pierre Dupré and Donald Dupré, is based on great curved concrete arches that rise and meet, forming an unmistakable silhouette topped by a tall tower. Its construction began in 1954 and lasted 17 years, until its inauguration in 1971, to accommodate the multitudes of pilgrims. Inside, the image of Our Lady of La Altagracia is venerated, the spiritual patron of Dominicans, a small painting of great devotional value surrounded by a frame of gold and jewels donated by the faithful over the centuries. The basilica was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by the Vatican, and has received visits from popes, which reinforces its importance. It's one of the busiest shrines in the Caribbean and the largest cathedral in the Dominican Republic; its spaciousness, its stained glass and the light entering through the great arches create a solemn and impressive atmosphere. The basilica is the destination of one of the country's largest pilgrimages, especially every January 21, the day of La Altagracia, when faithful from all over the Dominican Republic come to Higüey to pay homage to the Virgin. It's a place of living faith, popular devotion and enormous significance for Dominican identity. Getting there: in the center of Higüey, easily accessible by car or excursion. Best time: any day; January 21 to experience the great pilgrimage (with huge crowds). Tips: it's a place of worship, so it's best to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered), keep quiet during Masses and not interrupt the faithful who are praying; photos are usually allowed with discretion.
ℹ️ Distance: Center of Higüey, about 45 min from Punta Cana (car or excursion) · Best time to go: Year-round; January 21 (day of La Altagracia) for the great pilgrimage · Entry: Free (open access; voluntary donation); respect the worship · Duration: 30 min to 1 hour

Old Church of San Dionisio
One of the oldest colonial churches in the Americas, the first shrine of La Altagracia, in the historic center.
The church of San Dionisio is a colonial treasure and one of the oldest buildings in Higüey and in all the Americas. Built in the 16th century, it was for centuries the shrine where the image of Our Lady of La Altagracia was venerated, before the modern basilica was raised. It is, therefore, the original historical and spiritual heart of the city, tied to the very beginnings of the devotion to La Altagracia. Of sober, whitewashed architecture, typical of the colonial churches of the Caribbean, San Dionisio preserves the flavor of the conquest era. Although modest in size compared with the imposing basilica, its value lies precisely in its antiquity and its founding role: here, for centuries, the faith of the people of Higüey and of the pilgrims who came to venerate the Virgin was concentrated. It's in the old part of the city, very close to the Central Park. Visiting San Dionisio lets you understand the historical dimension of Higüey and complete the visit to the basilica with its colonial counterpart. It's a fascinating contrast between the old church, laden with centuries, and the monumental modern temple built for the multitudes. Getting there: in the historic center of Higüey, a short distance from the center and the Central Park. Best time: any day; check opening hours. Tips: as in any temple, dress respectfully and keep quiet; check the visiting and Mass hours locally, as they may vary.
ℹ️ Distance: Historic center of Higüey (a short distance from the center) · Best time to go: Year-round; check opening hours · Entry: Free (open access; voluntary donation); respect the worship · Duration: 20 to 40 minutes

Central Park of Higüey
The city's main square, a meeting point and a good starting point for a walking tour of the center.
The Central Park of Higüey is the city's main square, the classic landmark of every Dominican town and the heart of local social life. Surrounded by shops, banks and the closeness of both the basilica and San Dionisio, it's a good starting point (or resting point) for a walking tour of the historic center. In the afternoons it fills with residents coming out for fresh air, kids playing, street vendors of ice cream and fried snacks, and the characteristic bustle of a Dominican square. It's an ideal place to observe the everyday life of Higüey away from the resort circuit, sit for a while under the trees and feel the real pulse of the city. From the park you can plan on foot the visit to the basilica, to San Dionisio and to the nearby commercial area, since the main attractions of the center are a short distance from each other. Getting there: right in the center of Higüey, next to the church of San Dionisio. Best time: in the afternoon/at sunset, when there's more activity. Tips: a good place to buy a fresh juice or a street snack and observe local life; watch your belongings as in any busy square.
ℹ️ Distance: Center of Higüey, next to San Dionisio · Best time to go: Afternoon/sunset (more activity) · Entry: Free (open access) · Duration: 20 to 30 minutes

Market and commercial center of Higüey
The bustling market and commercial streets of the city, to experience authentic local Dominican life.
Higüey is a commercial and vibrant city, and touring its market and central streets is one of the best ways to experience local Dominican life, far from the resort atmosphere. The market is a hive of colors, smells and sounds: stalls of tropical fruit (mango, guava, passion fruit, papaya), vegetables, root vegetables, spices, meats, fish, medicinal herbs and products of all kinds. The streets of the center are full of shops, stores, street vendors, motoconchos and the typical hustle of a provincial Dominican city. It's the place to feel the real pulse of the east: the people, the music at full volume, the colmados (neighborhood stores), the haggling and the warmth of the local culture. You can also buy typical products, crafts and religious souvenirs linked to La Altagracia. It's a more sensory and human experience than a monumental one: it's not about 'seeing' a building, but about immersing yourself in Dominican everyday life, tasting fruit or a fresh juice and chatting with people. A visit that adds authenticity to any trip through the east. Getting there: in the center of Higüey, walking from the basilica. Best time: in the morning, when the market is most active. Tips: bring cash in Dominican pesos and small coins, watch your belongings in the crowd, haggle in good spirits and try the tropical fruit; the atmosphere is safe with the basic precautions of any busy market.
ℹ️ Distance: Center of Higüey (on foot from the basilica) · Best time to go: In the morning (market most active) · Entry: Free (to browse); purchases separate · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Cigar factory and typical products
Visits to artisanal cigar (tobacco), rum and coffee factories, part of the area's cultural excursions.
The Dominican east and the Higüey area are a land of typical products such as tobacco, rum, coffee and cocoa, and many cultural excursions include a visit to factories or artisanal workshops to learn how they're made. The visit to a cigar factory is one of the most popular: you see the process of selecting the tobacco leaves, the hand-rolling by the rollers and the making of the cigar, a deeply rooted tradition in the Dominican Republic, one of the great producers of premium tobacco in the world. These visits are usually combined with tastings of Dominican rum, local coffee, chocolate or cocoa, and with the chance to buy products directly from the producer. It's a pleasant and educational way to get to know the productive and artisanal culture of the area, beyond the religious and the urban. Many of these stops are integrated into the day excursions that combine Higüey with tours through the countryside, tobacco and sugarcane plantations and rural communities of the east, giving a more complete view of local life and the economy. Getting there: on an organized excursion or on your own, depending on the workshop; some are in Higüey or its surroundings. Best time: any time of year; during business hours. Tips: bring cash if you want to buy products, check whether there are tastings included; tobacco and rum are good Dominican souvenirs.
ℹ️ Distance: In Higüey and surroundings (depending on the workshop; car or excursion) · Best time to go: Any time of year, during business hours · Entry: Free or with a tasting included in the tour; purchases separate · Duration: 30 min to 1 hour

Life and local culture of an eastern city
Squares, colmados, Creole food and the rhythm of a real Dominican city, ideal for getting to know the local culture.
Beyond the specific monuments, Higüey's great appeal is itself: a real Dominican city, with its rhythm, its people and its culture. Visiting it is the best way to understand how life is in the Dominican east outside the tourist bubble of the resorts. Its squares, its colmados with merengue and bachata at full volume, its Creole-food eateries and the warmth of its people make up a genuine cultural experience. Higüey lets you try authentic Dominican cuisine in its element: 'la bandera' (white rice, beans and meat), mofongo, sancocho, goat with rum or stewed (very typical of the eastern region), mangú, fish with coconut, tostones and fresh tropical-fruit juices. Eating at a local eatery in Higüey is a very different experience —and often tastier and cheaper— than at the resort buffets. It's also a city where you can feel the importance of popular religiosity, commerce and provincial life. For the curious traveler, devoting time to Higüey is one of the most enriching ways to connect with the true Dominican identity. Getting there: in the center and neighborhoods of Higüey, on foot or by local transport. Best time: any day; morning and sunset for the most activity. Tips: bring cash in pesos, dare to eat at local eateries (looking for the busiest ones as a good sign), watch your things with common sense and enjoy Dominican hospitality.
ℹ️ Distance: All around the city of Higüey · Best time to go: Any day; morning and sunset for more activity · Entry: Free (to tour the city); meals and purchases separate · Duration: Half a day
