📌Municipality
Isla Verde is a coastal sector of the municipality of Carolina, in the San Juan metropolitan area, Puerto Rico, though for almost all practical purposes it works as an extension of the capital. It's the main hotel and resort zone of the metro area, a beach strip stretching along the Atlantic Ocean, right next to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). Carolina, known as 'the Town of the Giants' and birthplace of the baseball player Roberto Clemente, is one of the most populous municipalities on the island, and its Isla Verde coast concentrates the largest offer of beach lodging in the whole region
📌Getting there
Isla Verde is the easiest beach destination to reach in all of Puerto Rico: it's literally next to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), about 5 to 10 minutes away by car, taxi or ride app. From Old San Juan or Condado you arrive in about 15 to 25 minutes via the main avenue. Isla Verde Avenue (route PR-187) is the backbone of the area, where hotels, restaurants, shops and the beach access line up. There's a tourist-taxi service with fixed rates from the airport and a connection to the AMA bus network
📌Best time to go
Isla Verde is enjoyed year-round thanks to Puerto Rico's tropical climate, with warm and stable temperatures. High (and most expensive) season runs from mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is drier and cooler and visitors escaping the northern winter arrive. Summer (June to November) is hotter and more humid and coincides with hurricane season (its peak is August to October), though there are usually good hotel deals. Spring and early fall offer a good balance between climate, prices and fewer crowds
📌Suggested days
As a beach destination, Isla Verde can be enjoyed in 1 to 3 days dedicated to sun, sea and resort life, ideal for the beginning or the end of a trip around the island, taking advantage of the airport's closeness. But for its location it's above all an excellent base for exploring the whole metropolitan area: from here you can visit Old San Juan, Condado, El Yunque National Forest and Fajardo on a day trip. For a trip that combines urban beach and excursions around the island's east, 3 to 5 nights in Isla Verde are a very comfortable base

Loading weather…
Isla Verde is San Juan's quintessential beach for those who want sun, sea and resort comfort minutes from the plane. This coastal strip of the municipality of Carolina, right next to the airport and a step from the capital, concentrates the metro area's largest beach hotel offer: big oceanfront resorts, boutique hotels, restaurants, casinos and a lively nightlife. It's the place where many travelers spend their first or last night on the island, and where others choose to stay the whole trip to have the beach right there and the excursions at hand.
The star is its beach: a long strip of golden sand and turquoise Atlantic waters, considered one of the best urban beaches in the Caribbean. It's a public beach (in Puerto Rico all beaches are), lined with palm trees and the row of hotels, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, doing water sports or simply walking from end to end. Unlike the historic bustle of Old San Juan, Isla Verde is relaxation, a hammock and coconut water, with all the tourist infrastructure a stone's throw away.
This guide covers the essentials of Isla Verde with a practical, warm eye: what its beach is like, what to do in the area, where to stay and eat, how to get around and how to take advantage of its privileged location to get to know San Juan and the east of Puerto Rico. Whether as a beach destination in itself or as a base of operations, Isla Verde combines the ease of having everything close with the simple pleasure of a good day of Caribbean sea.
📖 History of Isla Verde
Isla Verde is today a modern tourist sector, but its history is tied to that of the municipality of Carolina and to the transformation of San Juan's east coast in the 20th century. Carolina was officially founded in 1857, splitting off from neighboring towns, and for a long time was an area of haciendas and sugarcane. Its motto, 'the Town of the Giants', alludes both to local historical figures and, above all, to its most illustrious son: the legendary baseball player Roberto Clemente, Puerto Rican national idol and Hall of Fame member, born in Carolina in 1934. The Isla Verde coastal strip, facing the Atlantic, was originally an area of dunes, coconut palms and little population. Everything changed with the urbanization and tourist boom of the mid-20th century, driven by the closeness of the international airport (opened in its current location in 1955) and by the 'Operation Bootstrap' development model that modernized the island's economy. From the 1960s and 1970s onward, the big hotels and condos that today define its profile were built. Thus, Isla Verde went from being a coconut grove by the sea to becoming the busiest beach and resort area of the San Juan metropolitan area. The full history of Carolina and this coast is on our history page.

Isla Verde Beach
One of the best urban beaches in the Caribbean: golden sand, turquoise waters and all the tourist infrastructure right there.
Isla Verde Beach is the area's great attraction and one of the most celebrated urban beaches in the Caribbean. It's a wide strip of fine golden sand, lined with palm trees and the row of big hotels and condos, with the warm, turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Like every beach in Puerto Rico, it's public and open-access, though the hotels offer their own services of loungers, umbrellas and oceanfront bars.
It's a very versatile beach: the sea is usually suitable for swimming and a good dip, and in its waters and sands all kinds of activities are practiced, from simple sunbathing to water sports like paddleboarding (SUP), jet skiing, parasailing or snorkeling in some sectors. Walking it from end to end, especially early in the morning or at sunset, is one of the pleasures of staying in the area.
The beach is informally divided into sectors in front of the different hotels and public access points. There are beach facilities and signposted entrances where those not staying at the resorts can arrive, park and enjoy. On weekends and holidays it fills with local families, which gives it a very Puerto Rican atmosphere.
Getting there: it's in front of Isla Verde Avenue, minutes from the airport; you access it on foot from the hotels or via the public access points. Best time to go: any sunny day; early or at sunset to avoid the strongest sun. Safety tips: use sunscreen, stay hydrated, watch your belongings in the sand and respect the lifeguard flags where there are any, since some stretches can have currents.
ℹ️ Distance: In front of Isla Verde Avenue; minutes from the SJU airport and the hotels · Best time to go: Any sunny day; morning or sunset to avoid the strong sun · Admission: Free (public beach) · Duration: Half a day or more

Water sports and beach life
Paddleboarding, jet ski, parasailing, snorkeling and lessons in the sea, with operators in front of the hotels.
Isla Verde beach is one of the best places in the metropolitan area for water sports, thanks to its relatively sheltered waters and the concentration of operators in front of the hotels. It's an ideal plan for combining the relaxation of the beach with some adrenaline or activity, without having to leave the area.
Among the most popular activities is stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), perfect for beginners in the mornings when the sea is calmer; kayaking; jet skiing to travel the coast at full speed; and parasailing, which lets you see Isla Verde and San Juan from the air, suspended under a parachute pulled by a boat. In some sectors with rocky bottoms or near the reefs you can snorkel and see colorful fish.
Several schools and operators offer lessons, equipment rental and excursions, usually with stands or booths on the beach itself in front of the hotels, or bookable through the resorts. Some also organize catamaran or boat trips from nearby marinas.
Getting there: on Isla Verde beach itself, in front of the hotels. Best time to go: the mornings usually have the calmest sea, ideal for SUP and kayaking; the afternoon wind favors other sports. Tips: confirm that the operator provides life vests and gives a brief safety briefing; book in advance in high season.
ℹ️ Distance: On Isla Verde beach, in front of the hotels · Best time to go: Mornings for a calm sea (SUP, kayak); depending on the operator for jet ski and parasailing · Admission: SUP/kayak US$25–40 per hour; jet ski US$80–120 per half hour; parasailing US$70–95 per person (beach operators, 2025; confirm when you visit) · Duration: 1 to 3 hours depending on the activity

Nightlife, casinos and dining
Hotel casinos, bars, clubs and a varied restaurant offer along Isla Verde Avenue.
Isla Verde isn't only a beach by day: as night falls it transforms into one of the nightlife and entertainment hubs of the San Juan metropolitan area. Isla Verde Avenue and the big hotels concentrate casinos, bars, lounges, clubs and restaurants for all tastes, which makes it a very lively area after sunset.
Several of the big resorts (like the San Juan Marriott or the InterContinental) have casinos open to the public, a tradition of Puerto Rican tourism, where you can try your luck at the slot machines and gaming tables in an elegant atmosphere, with no admission cost. Around them, hotel bars abound, along with oceanfront terraces for a sunset drink and clubs for those who want to go out dancing.
On the dining side, the area offers everything from Puerto Rican criollo cuisine — with its mofongos, tostones, rice with pigeon peas and fresh seafood — to international restaurants, seafood spots, chains and more informal options. Many hotels have top-tier restaurants, and along the avenue there are offerings for all budgets.
Getting there: along Isla Verde Avenue and within the hotels; everything a short distance away on foot or by taxi/app. Best time to go: weekend nights are the liveliest. Safety tips: as in any tourist area, use common sense at night, prefer a taxi or app to get around and watch your belongings. The minimum age for the casinos is 18.
ℹ️ Distance: Along Isla Verde Avenue and in the hotels · Best time to go: Nights, especially weekends · Admission: Free (open access to the avenue and the hotel casinos; minimum age 18) · Duration: One night

Excursion to Old San Juan
The capital's colonial old town, with its cobblestone streets and fortresses, 20 minutes from Isla Verde.
One of the great advantages of staying in Isla Verde is its closeness to Old San Juan, the historic heart of the capital and one of the best-preserved colonial ensembles in the Americas, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It's about 20 to 25 minutes away by car, taxi or app, which makes it the must-do excursion from the area.
Old San Juan is a labyrinth of streets paved with blue cobblestones (the famous 'adoquines'), colorful colonial houses, plazas, churches and two monumental fortresses: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, built by the Spanish to defend the entrance to the bay and managed today by the US National Park Service (NPS). Walking its streets, looking out from the walls with a sea view, visiting the Cathedral and La Fortaleza, and strolling its shops and restaurants is to immerse yourself in five centuries of history.
From Isla Verde you can go on your own (taxi/app is the most comfortable) or join a guided tour, and dedicate half a day or a full day to it. We have a dedicated guide to Old San Juan with all the detail.
Getting there: by taxi/app (the most comfortable, about 20 to 25 minutes, fixed tourist rate about US$21 from the airport) or by AMA bus. Best time to go: in the morning to tour with less heat, or at sunset for the views from the walls. Tips: comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, water, sunscreen and a hat.
ℹ️ Distance: About 20 to 25 minutes by car/taxi from Isla Verde · Best time to go: Morning (less heat) or sunset (views from the walls) · Admission: Walking the old town is free; combined ticket to El Morro and San Cristóbal US$10 (16 or older; NPS 2025, valid 2 days; under 16 free) · Duration: Half a day to a day

Excursion to El Yunque and Fajardo
The only tropical rainforest in the US park system and the island's east, on a day trip from Isla Verde.
Another great advantage of Isla Verde's location is its access to eastern Puerto Rico, where two of the island's great natural destinations await: El Yunque National Forest and the Fajardo area. Both can be visited on a day trip from the area.
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System, a sea of green mountains covered in jungle, with waterfalls, natural pools, trails and lookouts, home to the coquí (the island's symbolic little frog). It's a little over an hour from Isla Verde, and many travelers combine it with a swim in its waterfalls and a tour of its main trails.
Fajardo, at the far northeast, is the gateway to the famous Laguna Grande bioluminescent bay, where nighttime kayak excursions are done among microorganisms that glow when they move, and to the islands and cays for snorkeling. The ferries to Vieques and Culebra also leave from there.
Getting there: by rental car or with organized tours that leave from the metropolitan area (many include pickup at Isla Verde hotels). Best time to go: for El Yunque, in the morning (it usually rains in the afternoon); for the bioluminescent bay, on nights with little moon, when the glow is more intense. Tips: for El Yunque, hiking shoes, repellent and a raincoat; book the bay excursion in advance, since there's limited capacity and they don't operate during a full moon. We have dedicated guides to El Yunque, Fajardo and Laguna Grande.
ℹ️ Distance: El Yunque a little over 1 h; Fajardo about 1 h to 1.5 h from Isla Verde · Best time to go: El Yunque in the morning; bioluminescent bay on nights with little moon · Admission: Kayak tour to the bioluminescent bay US$50–75 per person (with transport from San Juan up to US$125); El Yunque, general access at no fixed cost, some waterfalls require a reservation (2025; confirm when you visit) · Duration: A day (El Yunque) or half a day/night (bay)

Condado Lagoon and coastal strolls
Between Isla Verde and Old San Juan stretches the urban coast of Condado and Ocean Park, ideal for strolling.
Between Isla Verde and Old San Juan unfolds the urban coast of San Juan, with neighborhoods like Ocean Park and Condado, worth exploring for a more complete view of the beachy capital. It's an easy tour, since everything is connected by the coastal avenue a few minutes from Isla Verde.
Condado is the most sophisticated and cosmopolitan neighborhood of the coastal strip, with luxury hotels, boutiques, fine-dining restaurants and a lively urban beach. There you'll find the Condado Lagoon, a body of water between the sea and the city where you can paddleboard and kayak in an urban setting, with views of the buildings and the Dos Hermanos bridge. Ocean Park, between Isla Verde and Condado, is a quieter residential neighborhood with a beach much loved by locals and a relaxed atmosphere.
Touring this strip — whether to change beaches, go out to eat or get to know another face of San Juan — is a good way to make the most of a stay in Isla Verde. We have a dedicated guide to Condado with all the detail.
Getting there: by taxi/app or car from Isla Verde, in a few minutes (fixed tourist rate about US$17 from the airport); Condado is on the way to Old San Juan. Best time to go: any day for the beaches; sunset for strolling. Tips: it pairs well with an excursion to Old San Juan on the same day.
ℹ️ Distance: Condado and Ocean Park, between Isla Verde and Old San Juan (a few minutes by car/taxi) · Best time to go: Any day for the beaches; sunset for strolling · Admission: Free (beaches and public promenade); paddleboarding/kayaking on the lagoon from US$25–35 per hour (2025; confirm when you visit) · Duration: Half a day

❓ Frequently asked questions
Should you stay in Isla Verde or in Old San Juan?+
It depends on what you're after. Isla Verde is ideal if you want beach, resorts and nightlife, with the airport right there and excellent access to the eastern excursions. Old San Juan is better if you prioritize history, the colonial atmosphere and walking everything, though its beach is farther away. Many travelers combine: a few nights in each area, or they stay in Isla Verde and go to Old San Juan on a day trip (it's 20-25 minutes away, fixed tourist taxi about US$21).
Is Isla Verde beach safe for swimming?+
In general it's a good beach for swimming, with relatively calm waters on many stretches, but as across the whole Atlantic there can be currents in some sectors. Respect the lifeguard flags and signs where there are any, don't go too far from the shore and keep an eye on children. It's a very popular and family-friendly beach, especially on weekends.
Do I need to rent a car if I stay in Isla Verde?+
It's not essential to enjoy the area and the metropolitan area (San Juan, Condado), which are well covered by taxi/app (from about US$12-21 depending on the zone) or by AMA bus (US$0.75). But if you want to do excursions on your own to El Yunque, Fajardo or the rest of the island, a rental car (from about US$45-80/day) gives much more freedom.
How does the AMA bus work in Isla Verde and how do you pay?+
Isla Verde is one of the few destinations in this guide with real urban public transport, because the AMA (Metropolitan Bus Authority, exclusive to the San Juan metro area) reaches here. The useful route is the T5, which connects the SJU airport, Isla Verde Avenue, Condado and Old San Juan (Covadonga terminal), passing about every 30 minutes from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm. The fare is US$0.75 and is now paid with exact-change coins OR with a contactless card/phone/watch (tap-to-pay); at the Tren Urbano stations AMA+Tren combos are sold. To see where the bus is in real time, use Google Maps or Moovit. One detail: the T5 doesn't allow large luggage, only carry-on or a backpack.
How far is Isla Verde from the airport?+
Very close: it's the beach destination nearest to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), just 5 to 10 minutes away by car or taxi (fixed tourist rate about US$12 plus a US$3 airport charge). That's why it's so popular for the first or last night of a Puerto Rico trip, or as a comfortable base for the whole trip.
What currency is used and do I need a visa?+
Puerto Rico is a US territory, so the currency is the US dollar (USD) and the same immigration rules apply as for entering the US (US citizens don't need a passport; everyone else, according to US rules, like the ESTA or the corresponding visa). Spanish and English are spoken and cards are accepted almost everywhere.
What's the best time to visit Isla Verde?+
It's enjoyed year-round for its tropical climate. The high and most expensive season runs from December to April (dry, cool weather). Summer and fall are hotter and more humid and coincide with hurricane season (peak August to October), but with better hotel prices. Spring offers a good balance.
What's there to eat near Isla Verde?+
Everything: Puerto Rican criollo cuisine (mofongo, tostones, rice with pigeon peas) from US$15 a dish, seafood spots, hotel and international restaurants, and casual food. A very nearby must are the Piñones kiosks, a few minutes away, famous for their typical fritters like bacalaítos, alcapurrias and empanadillas by the sea, for about US$4-10 a portion.
