📌What it is
The Itaipú Dam (Itaipú Binacional) is a colossal hydroelectric plant on the Paraná River, shared by Paraguay and Brazil, located between Hernandarias (Alto Paraná, Paraguay) and Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil), a few kilometers from Ciudad del Este. For years it was the largest hydroelectric plant in the world in energy production and remains one of the two largest on the planet. Its concrete wall stretches nearly 8 kilometers and is one of the greatest engineering works ever built, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
📌Service city
The base for visiting Itaipú is Ciudad del Este, Paraguay's second city, a few kilometers from the complex. There you'll find hotels of every category, dining, a bus terminal, banks, hospitals and Guaraní International Airport (AGT), in Minga Guazú. The Paraguayan visitor center is in Hernandarias; on the Brazilian side, entry is via Foz do Iguaçu. The dam combines very well with the Monday Falls and, crossing into Brazil, with the Iguazú Falls.
📌Best time to go
Itaipú can be visited year-round. Winter (May to August), mild and drier, is the most comfortable time to tour the area and combine with the other eastern attractions. The great spectacle is the opening of the spillway, which occurs only in times of heavy flow (it's not permanent): when it's open, seeing the water plunging is striking. The monumental nighttime illumination is offered Fridays and Saturdays at 20 h (winter hours may vary). It's always worth checking the current hours and visit options.
📌Suggested days
The visit to the dam takes half a day (between the transfer, the visitor center and the tour of the complex). With a full day you can combine Itaipú with the Monday Falls, which is nearby. If you add a visit to the Iguazú Falls on the Brazilian and/or Argentine side, it's worth devoting 2 to 3 days or more to the whole Triple Frontier region, using Ciudad del Este as a base.

Few human works impress as much by their scale as the Itaipú Dam. Built on the Paraná River, on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, it's one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world and a monument to twentieth-century engineering. Its concrete wall stretches nearly 8 kilometers and the flow its turbines move supplies electricity to much of two countries. Seeing it up close, looking into its spillway and understanding the figures behind the work is an experience that leaves you speechless.
Itaipú is a binational company, the fruit of a historic agreement between Paraguay and Brazil, and it's much more than a concrete wall: the complex includes a complete visitor center, viewpoints, protected natural areas, wildlife refuges and museums that tell the history, the operation and the enormous impact —energy, environmental and social— of the dam. The visit combines colossal engineering, recent Paraguayan history and nature recovered in its surroundings.
This guide covers the Itaipú Dam with a practical, warm eye: what visit options exist, what the panoramic tour and the technical circuits are like, when the spectacular spillway opens, how to get there from Ciudad del Este and how to combine it with the Monday Falls and the Iguazú Falls. Itaipú is an essential stop in eastern Paraguay and a living lesson on energy, water and regional integration.
📖 History of Itaipú Dam
The idea of harnessing the enormous hydroelectric potential of the Paraná River between Paraguay and Brazil took shape with the Itaipú Treaty, signed by both countries in 1973. The construction of the dam began shortly after and continued throughout the decade, mobilizing tens of thousands of workers in one of the greatest engineering works in history: the course of the Paraná had to be diverted, millions of cubic meters of rock and earth excavated and a gigantic concrete wall built. The reservoir began to fill in 1982, and the first generating unit came into operation in 1984. Over the following years the turbines were completed to reach a colossal installed capacity, which made Itaipú the largest hydroelectric plant in the world in energy production for decades, before being surpassed in capacity by China's Three Gorges dam (though Itaipú has kept breaking annual generation records). The work completely transformed the Alto Paraná region: it spurred the explosive growth of Ciudad del Este, changed the landscape, flooded areas that forced the relocation of populations and covered the old Guairá Falls (Sete Quedas), falls that ended up under the reservoir. Itaipú is today a symbol of the integration between Paraguay and Brazil, a key piece of both countries' energy and a first-rate tourist destination. The detailed history is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see
1
Panoramic tour of the dam
The most popular visit: contemplating the dam from the viewpoints and learning about its operation and history.
The panoramic tour is the most common and accessible way to get to know Itaipú, and the most recommended for a first visit. It begins at the visitor center, where through videos, models and exhibits the magnitude of the work, its history and its operation are explained: how much energy it produces, how it was built, how many workers took part and what impact it had on the region. It's an essential introduction to grasp what you're about to see.
Then, on a bus or complex vehicle, visitors tour strategic points around the dam and stop at the main viewpoints, from which you can contemplate the concrete wall in all its extent and, with luck, the spillway. The scale is hard to convey: the wall fades into the horizon and the sense of smallness before the work is total. The guides explain each sector and answer questions about the plant, the turbines and the river.
When the Paraná's flow is high, the spillway is opened to release the excess water, and the spectacle of that mass plunging with a roar is one of the most striking moments of the visit. The opening isn't permanent and depends on the rains and the reservoir level, so it's worth checking whether it's open before going.
Getting there: the Paraguayan visitor center is in Hernandarias, a few kilometers from Ciudad del Este (car, taxi or excursion). On the Brazilian side, entry is via Foz do Iguaçu (about R$ 63, 2025). Best time: year-round; check the current hours. Tips: bring ID to enter, book in advance and check the available options and hours.
ℹ️ Distance: Visitor center in Hernandarias, a few km from Ciudad del Este (car, taxi or excursion) · Best time: Year-round; check hours and spillway opening · Admission: Free on the Paraguayan side (Hernandarias, 2025); about R$ 63 on the Brazilian side (Foz do Iguaçu, 2025; check) · Duration: Approximately 2 to 3 hours
2
Technical circuit / Itaipú Special
A more complete tour that enters internal sectors of the plant, to see the inner workings of the dam.
For those who want to go beyond the panoramic tour, Itaipú offers the 'Itaipú Special' circuit, which enters internal sectors of the hydroelectric plant, normally not accessible on the basic visit. It's the ideal option for engineering lovers, students and the curious who want to understand up close how the energy is generated.
On this circuit you descend into the interior of the dam to see up close elements like the machine hall with the enormous turbines and generators, the control panels and the pipes through which the water plunges to move the turbines, with the plant in full operation. Specialized guides explain the complete process of electricity generation, from the fall of the water to the distribution of the energy to Paraguay and Brazil.
The technical visit has specific requirements (minimum age, suitable clothing and footwear, advance booking with ID) and a higher cost than the panoramic tour. Since it's an industrial facility in operation, the safety rules are strict. It's a memorable experience for truly understanding what one of the largest plants in the world means.
Getting there: same as the panoramic tour, from the visitor center in Hernandarias or Foz do Iguaçu. Best time: year-round; requires advance booking. Tips: confirm the entry requirements (age, clothing, ID) and book well in advance, since spots are limited.
ℹ️ Distance: From the visitor center in Hernandarias (car, taxi or excursion) · Best time: Year-round; requires advance booking · Admission: About Gs. 80,000 (US$ 32) or its equivalent in reais (about R$ 175), 2025; check when booking · Duration: Approximately 2 to 3 hours
3
Monumental nighttime Illumination
The light-and-sound spectacle that illuminates the dam on Friday and Saturday nights.
On Friday and Saturday nights, Itaipú offers the Monumental Illumination, a spectacle in which the gigantic wall is lit with hundreds of floodlights accompanied by music, creating an impressive image very different from the daytime visit. It's one of the most photogenic experiences of the complex and a special way to appreciate the scale of the work. On the Paraguayan side (Hernandarias) the light show is FREE, a key fact that surprises many visitors; on the Brazilian side (Foz do Iguaçu) the nighttime tour has a cost.
The nighttime tour passes by the powerhouse, the spillway and the sites where the turbines are installed, now bathed in light and color. When it coincides with the opening of the spillway, the effect of the illuminated water plunging in the darkness is particularly overwhelming.
The accreditations at the Visitor Reception Center are done from early in the afternoon/evening and the tour begins around 20 h (the exact time varies by season and is usually earlier in winter). Many visitors do the panoramic tour by day and return to see the lights at nightfall.
Getting there: from Ciudad del Este or Hernandarias by car, taxi or nighttime excursion. Best time: Fridays and Saturdays, year-round. Tips: book in advance by calling (061) 599-8040/8094 or emailing cturistico@itaipu.gov.py; bring warm clothing in winter for the night.
ℹ️ Distance: From Ciudad del Este / Hernandarias (car, taxi or nighttime excursion) · Best time: Fridays and Saturdays, around 20 h (winter hours may vary) · Admission: FREE on the Paraguayan side (Hernandarias) with advance booking (source: SENATUR / Itaipú Binacional, verified July 2026); on the Brazilian side it has a cost (Foz do Iguaçu) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Tati Yupi Biological Refuge
Nature reserve created by Itaipú around the reservoir, with trails and wildlife of the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest.
As compensation for the enormous environmental impact of the work, Itaipú Binacional developed over the years an important nature-protection program, creating biological refuges and protected areas around the reservoir. The best known on the Paraguayan side is the Tati Yupi Biological Refuge, a natural space where fragments of the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest are conserved and native wildlife is protected.
In this refuge you can tour trails through the forest, observe birds and animals in semi-freedom, visit nurseries and learn about the reforestation and species-reintroduction programs the entity carries out. It's a less-known side of Itaipú but very interesting: it shows the effort to recover and conserve an ecosystem that was among the most threatened in South America. There are picnic areas and spaces designed for environmental education.
These visits are ideal for families, nature lovers and those who want to balance the industrial grandeur of the dam with a more serene contact with the natural setting.
Getting there: within the Itaipú complex, near Hernandarias (car or excursion). Best time: in the morning, with cool weather and better wildlife viewing. Tips: check whether the visit requires an advance booking, bring repellent, water and comfortable footwear.
ℹ️ Distance: Within the Itaipú complex, near Hernandarias (car or excursion) · Best time: In the morning, with cool weather · Admission: Gs. 20,000 per person (2025; check when you visit) · Duration: Half a day
