📌City
Piribebuy is a historic city in the department of Cordillera, in the central region of Paraguay, about 75 kilometers from Asunción. Nestled in a landscape of hills, streams and vegetation, it's famous for its role in the War of the Triple Alliance —it was the third capital of Paraguay (from December 8, 1868) and the scene of a heroic battle on August 12, 1869— and for its traditions, like cocido a la canela (cinnamon-scented burnt-mate drink) and the artisanal making of sweets. It's one of the historic and natural jewels of the Paraguayan Cordillera.
📌Service city
Piribebuy is a small city with basic services: guesthouses, eateries, shops and a paved-road connection. For a wider offering of hotels and services, it's worth also leaning on nearby Cordillera cities like Caacupé (the country's religious center) or Asunción itself, which is relatively close. Piribebuy is an ideal base for touring the natural and historical attractions of the department of Cordillera.
📌Best time to go
Piribebuy can be visited year-round. Winter (May to August), mild and drier, is the most comfortable time to tour the city and enjoy the area's streams and hills. Summer is hot and humid, ideal for cooling off in the natural resorts. There are dates of strong historical and patriotic charge, like the commemorations of the Battle of Piribebuy (August). It's worth checking the hours of the history museum and the attractions, and the state of the roads to the resorts.

Piribebuy is one of those small interior Paraguayan cities where history and nature come together. Located in the department of Cordillera, about 75 kilometers from Asunción, it's nestled in a landscape of hills, crystalline streams and vegetation, which makes it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility, river swims and contact with the Paraguayan countryside.

But Piribebuy is, above all, a city laden with historical memory. During the War of the Triple Alliance —the devastating conflict that pitted Paraguay against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay between 1864 and 1870— Piribebuy came to be the country's provisional capital and was the scene of one of the most heroic and tragic battles of that war, in 1869. That history, remembered with pride and pain, beats in every corner of the city and in its museum.

This guide covers Piribebuy with a practical, warm eye: its church and its history museum, its traditional center, its natural streams and resorts (Chololó, Piraretã, the Municipal Pool), and the attractions of the department of Cordillera that surround it, plus its famous traditions, like cocido a la canela and artisanal sweets. It's an essential stop for those who want to see historic and natural Paraguay, a step from the capital.

📖 History of Piribebuy

Piribebuy has a colonial origin: it was born around a chapel in the mid-seventeenth century (its official founding date was later set as March 8, 1636) and its name comes from Guaraní, associated with the vegetation or a type of reed of the area (there are different interpretations). During the colonial era it was a town of the center of the country, in the Cordillera region, tied to agricultural activity and popular religiosity. Its most decisive moment came during the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870): in the face of the enemy advance, on December 8, 1868 the government of Marshal Francisco Solano López moved the capital of Paraguay to Piribebuy, which thus became the nation's third capital in one of the most dramatic moments of its history. On August 12, 1869 the Battle of Piribebuy took place, in which about 1,600 defenders —among them the elderly, women and children— heroically resisted the attack of about 20,000 allied soldiers before being overrun; the battle and the events that followed were etched as a symbol of Paraguayan sacrifice in that war that decimated the country's population. After the war, Piribebuy recovered slowly and preserved its character as a historic and traditional town. Today it's a city of the department of Cordillera that safeguards that memory —especially in its history museum— and that draws visitors for its heritage, its traditions and its natural attractions. The detailed history is on our history page.

The church stands out for its traditional architecture, its altarpiece and its religious images, some of great age and devotion. Comandante Pedro Pablo Caballero History Museum
The museum that safeguards the memory of the War of the Triple Alliance and the heroic Battle of Piribebuy.
The Piribebuy History Museum is the essential place for understanding this city's central role in Paraguay's history, especially during the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870). It operates in a nineteenth-century colonial house that belonged to the parish and was founded as a museum in 1994 by veterans of the Chaco War. It safeguards objects, weapons, documents, relics and testimonies of the War of the Triple Alliance and also of the Chaco War. The visit lets you learn the context in which Piribebuy came to be Paraguay's provisional capital, the events of the battle of August 12, 1869 —in which the city was defended to the extreme by a garrison that included civilians, the elderly, women and children— and the consequences of that war that devastated the country. It's a moving experience that helps to grasp the sacrifice of the Paraguayan people.
