📌Department
Playa El Coco is in the municipality of San Juan del Sur, department of Rivas, on the southern Pacific coast of Nicaragua, about 18-20 km south of the town of San Juan del Sur. It's a long, serene, light-sand beach, much quieter and more solitary than the more popular beaches of the area, which makes it a haven of calm. Its great draw is the closeness to the La Flor Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important sea-turtle nesting beaches in the country, reachable in a few minutes
📌Service town
The service town is San Juan del Sur, about 18-20 km away (around 30-45 minutes by road, partly dirt), where the ATMs, banks, supermarkets, agencies, restaurants and the largest offer of transport and services are. Rivas, the departmental capital, is somewhat farther and concentrates the hospital, market and bus connections. On Playa El Coco itself there's a cabin/condominium complex and some basic services, but it's wise to bring provisions and cash from San Juan del Sur. Managua's international airport is about three hours away
📌Best time to go
The dry season (November to April or May) is the most comfortable for enjoying the beach, with sunny days and roads in good condition. The rainy season (May to October) brings very green landscapes and the dirt road can get tricky. The great conditioning factor of the trip, however, is the turtle season: the mass arribadas at the neighboring La Flor Refuge are usually concentrated roughly between July and January or February, with peaks in August and September. It's wise to check the nesting dates and times, which depend on the moons and the tides
📌Suggested days
With 1 or 2 days you can enjoy the calm of Playa El Coco and make the nighttime visit to the La Flor Refuge to see the turtle nesting, which is the great reason to come. With 2 to 4 days you can add coastal walks, total rest, sunsets and combine it with excursions to other beaches south of San Juan del Sur. It's an ideal destination for disconnecting for a few days in a solitary setting, using San Juan del Sur as a service base

🌤️ Clima en Playa El Coco
Loading weather…
Playa El Coco is one of those corners where the Nicaraguan Pacific shows its most serene version. About 18-20 kilometers south of San Juan del Sur, at the end of a road that is largely dirt, opens this long light-sand beach, much quieter and more solitary than the party and surf beaches of the area. Here the plan is precisely the opposite: walking without crossing paths with almost anyone, swimming, reading in the shade and letting the hours pass facing the sea.
But El Coco has a magnet that makes it special: it's a few minutes from the La Flor Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important sea-turtle nesting beaches in Nicaragua. In the right season, thousands of paslama (olive ridley) turtles come in arribadas to lay their eggs, and from the nests hatch babies that run toward the sea. Staying in El Coco is the most comfortable way to experience that natural spectacle, especially the guided nighttime visits to see the nesting.
This guide covers Playa El Coco with a practical eye: how to get there from San Juan del Sur along its dirt road, what to expect from its quiet beach, how and when to visit the La Flor Refuge to see the turtles, where to sleep and eat and how to organize a few days of calm. El Coco is not a destination of lots of action or big services, but of nature, silence and one of the most exciting encounters the Pacific coast offers: that of the sea turtles.
📖 History of Playa El Coco
Playa El Coco belongs to the municipality of San Juan del Sur, in the department of Rivas, a region of the southern Pacific of Nicaragua inhabited from pre-Columbian times by Chorotega and Nicarao peoples in the Rivas isthmus. For centuries, this coast of bays and beaches was the territory of fishermen and haciendas, with a mostly unpopulated seaboard. Unlike the port of San Juan del Sur, which had commercial importance in the 19th century —especially during the 'Transit Route' of the businessman Cornelius Vanderbilt, which connected the two oceans during the California gold rush—, the southern beaches like El Coco remained isolated and quiet. The area's great natural value was enshrined with the creation of the La Flor Wildlife Refuge, a protected area neighboring El Coco, declared to conserve one of the most important sea-turtle nesting beaches in the country. The tourist boom of San Juan del Sur from the late 20th century drove the development of lodgings on the neighboring beaches, and El Coco established itself as a destination of calm and nature tourism, tied above all to turtle watching. Today it combines its character as a solitary beach with the closeness to one of the great natural spectacles of Nicaragua. The broader history of the region is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see
1
Playa El Coco
A long, quiet, light-sand beach, ideal for swimming, walking and disconnecting far from the crowds.
Playa El Coco is a long strip of light sand that stretches serenely facing the Pacific, much quieter and more solitary than the central beaches of San Juan del Sur. Its great charm is precisely the calm: it's a place to walk from end to end without crossing paths with almost anyone, take a dip, sunbathe and let the hours pass with the sound of the waves in the background. Being at the end of a partly dirt road, it receives far fewer visitors than the more accessible beaches, which makes it a haven of peace.
The beach is good for swimming and enjoying the sea, though it's wise to be careful with the currents and swell, since it's an open Pacific beach without permanent lifeguard services. The sunsets are spectacular, with the sun sinking into the ocean and tinging the sky, and at night, far from the lights, the starry sky is magnificent.
In El Coco there's a cabin and condominium complex and some basic services, but don't expect the buzz of San Juan del Sur: the point is the disconnection. It's wise to arrive with provisions and cash. It's the ideal place to combine days of solitary beach with a visit to the neighboring La Flor Refuge.
Getting there: about 18-20 km south of San Juan del Sur along a partly dirt road (taxi, vehicle or tour). Best time to go: dry season for the road and the weather; combine with the turtle season. Tips: bring water, food, cash and repellent; watch out for the currents when swimming and respect the natural setting.
ℹ️ Distance: About 18-20 km south of San Juan del Sur (partly dirt road) · Best time to go: Dry season; combine with turtle season at La Flor · Entry: Free (public beach) · Duration: Half a day or more
2
La Flor Wildlife Refuge (turtle nesting)
One of the most important sea-turtle nesting beaches in Nicaragua, a few minutes from El Coco.
The La Flor Wildlife Refuge is the great reason to come to this area, and it's a few minutes from Playa El Coco. It's a protected area of about 7,349 hectares administered by MARENA, that safeguards one of the most important sea-turtle nesting beaches in Nicaragua and Central America. During the nesting season, thousands of paslama turtles (also called olive ridley) arrive at the beach in mass 'arribadas' to lay their eggs in the sand; it's estimated that about 20,000 turtles nest here each year. Other species also nest, like the leatherback and the hawksbill, though in smaller numbers.
The star visit is the guided nighttime one: accompanied by rangers and guides, you walk along the beach in the darkness (with red or dim lights so as not to disturb the animals) to witness how the turtles come out of the sea, dig their nests and lay their eggs. About 45 days after the arribadas you can attend the hatching and the release of the babies, which run toward the sea. It's an exciting experience of strong educational and conservation value.
The refuge charges an entry fee that contributes to its conservation (100 córdobas for Nicaraguans, 200 córdobas —about US$ 5-6— for foreigners, 2025), and the nighttime visit is usually hired as an organized tour from San Juan del Sur (with transport, guide and entry included, about US$ 25-35 per person). The visit is regulated to protect the turtles: you have to follow the guides' instructions, not use flash or strong flashlights, not touch the animals or the nests and keep your distance.
Getting there: very close to Playa El Coco, south of San Juan del Sur; reached by vehicle, taxi or tour. Best time to go: nesting season, roughly July to January/February, with the best peaks in August and September (check the dates). Tips: bring comfortable shoes, dark clothing, water and cash for the entry; strictly follow the rangers' rules.
ℹ️ Distance: A few minutes from Playa El Coco, south of San Juan del Sur · Best time to go: Turtle season (roughly July to January/February); peaks in August-September · Entry: 100 córdobas nationals / 200 córdobas foreigners (about US$ 5-6, 2025; check when you visit) · Duration: 1 to 3 hours (guided nighttime visit)

Sunsets and starry nights
Spectacular sunsets over the Pacific and night skies full of stars far from the lights.
One of the simplest and most memorable experiences of Playa El Coco is, simply, the end of the day. Because of its west-facing orientation and its clear surroundings, the sunsets are spectacular: the sun sinks into the sea and tinges the sky with oranges, pinks and violets, in a spectacle experienced almost in solitude each afternoon, without the crowds of other beaches.
And when night falls, another gift arrives: being far from the big urban centers and light pollution, the sky of El Coco fills with stars. On clear nights the Milky Way and a blanket of stars hard to appreciate in the city are seen clearly. It's the perfect complement to the beach days and, moreover, those dark nights are precisely the ones that favor the turtles' activity at the neighboring refuge.
The combination of solitary beach, movie-worthy sunsets and starry nights makes El Coco an ideal place to slow down, rest and reconnect with nature. It's a destination for those who prioritize the calm over the services and the action.
Getting there: on Playa El Coco itself. Best time to go: clear nights, more frequent in the dry season. Tips: bring a flashlight (better a red-light one if you'll be near the turtle beach), a light warm layer for the evening breeze and a readiness for the slow pace.
ℹ️ Distance: On Playa El Coco itself · Best time to go: Clear nights (more frequent in the dry season) · Entry: Free · Duration: As long as you like

Walk from El Coco to Playa La Flor
A coastal route between the two beaches, crossing low cliffs and small coves of sand and rock.
For those staying in El Coco who want to explore beyond the beach itself, there's the possibility of walking along the coast to the south, in the direction of the La Flor Refuge, skirting small cliffs, rocky outcrops and coves where there's usually very little company. It's a walk best done at low tide and with good-grip footwear, since there are rocky stretches.
The route gives you views of the open Pacific, coastal birds and, with luck, a crab or iguana among the rocks. There's no official signage, so it's wise to check the state of the path and the tides at the lodging before setting off, and not to attempt it alone if you don't know the area well.
It's a free, low-impact activity, ideal to complement the beach days with some movement and nature, without needing to hire a tour.
Getting there: it starts from Playa El Coco itself. Best time to go: low tide, dry season. Tips: closed shoes, water, sunscreen and check the tide schedule before setting off.
ℹ️ Distance: Variable, a few kilometers along the coast · Best time to go: Low tide; dry season · Entry: Free · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Birdwatching and coastal wildlife
The setting of El Coco and La Flor is a habitat for sea and coastal birds, besides the turtles.
The refuge and its surroundings are not only turtle territory: they're also a habitat for a good variety of coastal and sea birds, like pelicans, frigatebirds, herons and plovers, which you can observe walking along the beach or from the refuge's trails, especially at dawn or sunset. You can also come across iguanas and ghost crabs on the sand.
It's a quiet, free activity, ideal to complement the nighttime turtle visit with a daytime wildlife-watching outing, without needing a guide, though it's always more rewarding with one.
Getting there: on the beach itself and on the trails of the La Flor Refuge. Best time to go: year-round, best at dawn or sunset. Tips: binoculars, a cap and patience.
ℹ️ Distance: In El Coco and the La Flor Refuge · Best time to go: Year-round; dawn or sunset · Entry: Free on the beach; refuge entry if you enter its trails · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Combined excursion to the southern beaches (Playa Yankee, Ostional, Escameca)
Beaches neighboring south of San Juan del Sur that can be combined in a day with El Coco and La Flor.
The coast south of San Juan del Sur gathers a string of quiet beaches —Playa Yankee, Ostional (already on the Rivas side, near the border with Costa Rica), Escameca and El Coco itself— that many travelers tour on the same day by tour or with their own vehicle. They're beaches of similar profile: long, with open swell and little infrastructure, ideal for those seeking nature and disconnection.
Some operators in San Juan del Sur put together full-day excursions that combine two or three of these beaches with a visit to La Flor, including transport and sometimes lunch. It's a good way to get to know several southern beaches without depending on public transport, which is scarce in the area.
Getting there: on an organized tour or your own vehicle from San Juan del Sur. Best time to go: dry season for the roads. Tips: book the tour a day in advance and bring cash, water and sunscreen.
ℹ️ Distance: Beaches located between 15 and 25 km south of San Juan del Sur · Best time to go: Dry season · Entry: Free-access beaches; the combined tour has a cost · Duration: Full day
