Runaway Bay

📌Parish
Runaway Bay is a coastal town in the parish of Saint Ann, on Jamaica's north coast, between Discovery Bay and Ocho Rios. It's a quieter and more residential destination than its neighbors, with all-inclusive resorts facing pale-sand beaches and a relaxed atmosphere far from the bustle of the cruise ports. Its name, 'bay of the runaways', evokes legends of enslaved people who fled and of the last Spaniards who left the island. It's the ideal base for those seeking beach, calm and excursions to the waterfalls and attractions of the north coast.
📌Service city
Runaway Bay is a small hub that leans on the services of the north coast. It has resorts, some shops, banks and restaurants, but for larger services (hospitals, big supermarkets, cruise terminal) you turn to nearby Ocho Rios. It has no international airport: most travelers arrive via Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (a little over 1 hour away) or via Kingston. It's a convenient departure point for excursions to Dunn's River Falls, Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birthplace), Discovery Bay and the caves and waterfalls of the area.
📌Best time to go
Runaway Bay can be enjoyed year-round thanks to its warm, tropical climate. The dry season (mid-December to April) is the high season, with sunny days, calm seas and little rain, though with higher prices (the peak is Christmas and New Year). From May to November it's hotter with brief afternoon showers and lower prices; hurricane season runs from June to November. Being a quieter destination without the cruise-ship hustle, Runaway Bay offers calm beaches almost year-round, ideal for relaxing.
📌Suggested days
Two days cover the essentials: relaxing on the beaches and at the resorts, a snorkeling or diving outing (the area has good reefs) and a quiet sunset. With 3 to 4 days you can add excursions to the great attractions of the north coast using Runaway Bay as a base: Dunn's River Falls and the gardens of Ocho Rios, Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birthplace in the hills of Saint Ann), Discovery Bay with its Green Grotto Caves, and river adventures. It's a destination designed more for slowing down than for rushing from attraction to attraction.

Runaway Bay is the quiet secret of Jamaica's north coast. Tucked between historic Discovery Bay and bustling Ocho Rios, this small bay offers the best of the Jamaican Caribbean —pale sand, turquoise sea, all-inclusive resorts and reefs to dive— but without the hustle of the big cruise ports. It's the place you come to slow down, to sprawl on a lounger with a coconut water and to let the days pass at the slow rhythm of the tropics.

Its name, which means 'bay of the runaways', is laden with legends: some say enslaved people escaped from here toward Cuba in search of freedom, and others associate it with the flight of the last Spaniards when the English took the island in the 17th century. That atmosphere of frontier and stories of flight gives a special charm to a place that today is, above all, a synonym for calm.

This guide covers Runaway Bay with a practical and warm eye: where to enjoy its beaches and reefs, how to use the town as a quiet base to discover the great attractions of the north coast (Dunn's River Falls, Nine Mile, the caves of Discovery Bay), what legends its name hides and how to get around the area. It's the ideal destination for those who want to combine resort relaxation with getaways to the most authentic Jamaica.

📖 History of Runaway Bay

Runaway Bay, in the parish of Saint Ann, owes its evocative name —'bay of the runaways'— to the legends of flight that surround this coast. One tradition holds that enslaved African people escaped from here toward Cuba, fleeing the plantations in search of freedom; another, that the name recalls the flight of the last Spanish settlers when the English conquered Jamaica in 1655, embarking from these coasts bound for Cuba. The area, like the whole north coast, was land of sugar plantations worked by enslaved people during the centuries of British rule. Very close by is Discovery Bay, where tradition places Columbus's landing in 1494. The caves of the region, like the Green Grotto Caves of Discovery Bay, served throughout history as a refuge for the Taíno, fleeing Spaniards, Maroons and smugglers. For a long time, Runaway Bay was a quiet coastal town dedicated to fishing and farming. With the boom in tourism in Jamaica from the mid-20th century, the beauty of its bay and its reefs drew the development of resorts, establishing it as a beach destination more serene than nearby Ocho Rios. The full history is on our history page.

1
Runaway Bay beaches
Stretches of pale sand and calm, turquoise waters, quiet and without the cruise-ship hustle, ideal for relaxing.
The beaches are the great reason to come to Runaway Bay. Unlike the crowded beaches of Ocho Rios or the vast ones of Negril, those of Runaway Bay are characterized by their calm: stretches of pale sand, serene turquoise waters protected by reefs, and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for switching off. Much of the coast is occupied by resorts with private beaches, but there are also access points and areas to enjoy the sea. The water is usually calm and clear, which makes it ideal for swimming and for families with children to bathe with peace of mind. The presence of reefs near the coast makes the area a good spot for snorkeling and diving, with marine life and corals a short distance from the shore. Many resorts offer kayaks, paddleboards and other water sports without swell. The best thing about Runaway Bay's beaches is their peaceful atmosphere: here you come to read, sunbathe, take a swim and watch the afternoon fade without hurry, away from the crowds. It's the destination for those who prioritize rest over tourist bustle. Getting there: the beaches are along the bay, accessible from the resorts and lodgings; many are private to the hotels, so it's best to check the access. Best time: any sunny day; being quiet, they can almost always be enjoyed with few people. Tips: if your lodging isn't on the seafront, ask which beaches are public or paid-access; bring reef-safe sunscreen, cash and snorkeling gear if you have it.
ℹ️ Distance: Along the bay of Runaway Bay (accessible from resorts and lodgings) · Best time: Any sunny day; always quiet · Admission: Free on public stretches; resort beaches reserved for guests (verify when visiting, 2025) · Duration: Half a day or more

Diving and snorkeling on the reefs
One of the best diving areas on the north coast, with reefs, walls and marine life a short distance from the coast.
Runaway Bay is known among divers as one of the best dive spots on Jamaica's north coast. Off its beaches, the coral reefs begin a short distance from the shore and descend, forming walls and coral gardens that are home to rich marine life: colorful tropical fish, sponges, sea fans and, with luck, turtles and rays. The relative calm of its waters and the proximity of the reefs make it ideal for both beginners and experienced divers. There are dive centers in the area that offer trips to the different spots, introductory courses and discover-scuba dives for those who have never dived, as well as snorkeling outings for those who prefer to stay on the surface. Snorkeling is accessible even from some beaches, where you can see corals and fish at shallow depth. It's one of the most beautiful ways to discover the underwater face of Jamaica. As throughout the Caribbean, the reefs are fragile and threatened, so responsible operators insist on not touching or stepping on the corals and on using reef-safe sunscreen. Snorkeling or diving here is also a way to value and care for this natural heritage. Getting there: the outings set off from the dive centers and resorts of the area; it's best to book with an operator with good references. Best time: days of calm sea and good visibility, more frequent in the dry season (December to April). Tips: to dive you need certification or to do a guided discover-scuba dive; bring your certification if you have it. Respect the reef-care rules.
ℹ️ Distance: Reefs off the coast; outings from dive centers and resorts · Best time: Calm sea and good visibility (dry season) · Admission: Discover-scuba/1-tank dive US$ 60-90; open water course US$ 350-450; guided snorkeling US$ 25-40 (2025, reference prices) · Duration: Half a day

Green Grotto Caves (Discovery Bay)
A limestone cave system with an underground lake, a historic refuge for the Taíno, Spaniards and Maroons.
A few minutes from Runaway Bay, toward Discovery Bay, is one of the most singular attractions on the north coast: the Green Grotto Caves, a system of limestone caves and galleries with stalactites, stalagmites and a serene underground lake of crystal-clear waters called the Grotto Lake. The guided visit of about 45 minutes tours the cave chambers while explaining their geology, their fauna (including a colony of bats) and, above all, their fascinating history; the price includes a welcome drink. Because these caves are not just a natural wonder: over the centuries they served as a refuge for various protagonists of Jamaican history. It's believed the Taíno used them in pre-Columbian times; that the last Spaniards hid in them during the English conquest of 1655; that they served as a hideout for Maroons (runaway enslaved people) and for smugglers who trafficked rum and weapons; and that during World War II rum was stored inside them. All that historical weight makes the tour a journey through the island's past. The visit, always guided for safety, combines the appeal of the rock formations with the tales of legends and historical facts. The underground lake, illuminated, is one of the most striking moments of the tour. It opens every day from 9:00 to 16:00. Getting there: it's in Discovery Bay, a few minutes by taxi from Runaway Bay; easily reached on your own or on an excursion. Best time: any day; the interior of the cave keeps a pleasant temperature. Tips: bring comfortable, non-slip footwear (the floor can be wet), something light to keep warm and cash.
ℹ️ Distance: In Discovery Bay, a few minutes by taxi from Runaway Bay · Best time: Any day (the cave keeps a pleasant temperature); open 9:00-16:00 · Admission: US$ 20 adults / US$ 10 children (4-12 years) for foreigners; includes guided tour and a welcome drink (source: official Green Grotto Caves / Chukka site and Tripadvisor, verified July 2026) · Duration: About 1 hour

Dunn's River Falls (excursion from Runaway Bay)
Jamaica's most famous staircase waterfall, climbed hand in hand forming a human chain.
Although it's in Ocho Rios, about 20-30 minutes from Runaway Bay, Dunn's River Falls is such a classic north-coast excursion that it's almost obligatory for those staying in the area. It's a staircase waterfall about 180 meters high that descends directly to the Caribbean Sea, formed by limestone terraces covered in vegetation down which the water flows in little cascades. The most famous experience is climbing the waterfall hand in hand in a human chain, guided by the park staff, feeling the cool water run among the stones. You can also opt for alternative trails for those who prefer not to get in the water. The park has a beach at the foot of the waterfall, changing rooms and services. It's a family, fun and very photogenic activity, though it's best to go early to avoid the crowds on cruise days in Ocho Rios. The admission price includes access to the park and a guide for the climb. Getting there: by taxi or organized excursion from Runaway Bay (20-30 minutes). Best time: early in the morning, on a weekday if possible, to avoid crowds. Tips: bring water shoes with a rubber sole (mandatory or highly recommended), swimwear and a dry bag for your phone.
ℹ️ Distance: In Ocho Rios, 20-30 min from Runaway Bay · Best time: Early in the morning; weekdays better · Admission: US$ 25 adults / US$ 17 children (4-12) for foreigners; includes guide (source: official site dunnsriverfallsja.com, verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day with transfers

Excursion to Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birthplace)
The hill town where Bob Marley was born and lies at rest, one of the great excursions from the north coast.
From Runaway Bay, one of the most recommended and moving excursions is the visit to Nine Mile, the town in the hills of the parish of Saint Ann where Robert Nesta 'Bob' Marley, the most universal Jamaican musician, was born on February 6, 1945, and where his remains also lie at rest. Since Runaway Bay is in the same parish, the outing is especially convenient. The visit, guided by members of the Rastafari community, takes in the little wooden house where Marley grew up, the famous 'pillow stone' that inspired his songs and the mausoleum where he is buried. The atmosphere is very special, with music playing, stories about his life and the Rastafari spirituality that permeates the place. It's a pilgrimage for any reggae lover. The road to Nine Mile, through the green mountains of the interior of Saint Ann, is part of the experience: you cross villages, plantations and rural landscapes that show a Jamaica very different from the tourist coast. It's a culturally rich excursion, ideal to combine with other interior attractions. Getting there: Nine Mile is in the hills, a distance covered on an organized excursion with transfer or with a driver-guide, most recommended because of the mountain roads. Best time: any day; it's best to leave early. Tips: admission includes a guide and it's usual to leave a tip; bring small cash and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, closely tied to Rastafari culture.
ℹ️ Distance: In the hills of Saint Ann; excursion with transfer or driver-guide · Best time: Any day; leave early because of the distance · Admission: US$ 30-35 per person (2025, site admission); tours with transfer from Runaway Bay/Ocho Rios US$ 80-130 · Duration: Half a day to a full day with transfers

Cardiff Hall and the mark of the plantations
Vestiges of the old great houses and sugar plantations that shaped the history of the area.
The area of Runaway Bay and Saint Ann keeps the mark of its plantation past, when the north coast was dedicated to growing sugar cane through the labor of enslaved people. Place names like Cardiff Hall recall the old estates and 'great houses' (the large houses of the planters) that dominated the region, and that gave their name to sectors today occupied by resorts and residential neighborhoods. Although Runaway Bay doesn't have a great restored house open to the public as famous as Rose Hall in Montego Bay, touring the area with a local guide or learning about its history lets you understand the landscape: many of the lands where there are hotels today were sugar plantations, and the very name 'Runaway Bay' ('bay of the runaways') is tied to the stories of enslaved people who fled and of Maroons who took refuge in the caves nearby. For those interested in history, combining the visit to the Green Grotto Caves (a refuge for Maroons and runaways) with a tour of the area and its plantation place names offers a deeper look at the region, beyond the beach postcard. It's a way of not forgetting the harsh history beneath the tourist paradise. Getting there: the vestiges and place names are scattered around the Runaway Bay area; it's best to tour them with a local guide who knows the history. Best time: by day, combined with other visits. Tips: ask local guides about the history of Cardiff Hall and the plantations; combinable with the Green Grotto Caves for a day focused on the region's history.
ℹ️ Distance: Scattered around the Runaway Bay area (tour with a local guide) · Best time: By day, combined with other visits · Admission: Touring the area is free; guided visits at a variable cost depending on the local guide (2025) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

They go when they fill up and can get crowded
App to plan the routeFree (mobile data)-To calculate routes and times, the most useful is Google Maps; the real-time public-transport coverage (Moovit included) is scant outside Kingston, so don't expect to see the route taxi's live location. ❓ Frequently asked questions

Why choose Runaway Bay instead of Ocho Rios?+
Runaway Bay is the ideal option for those seeking quiet: it has calm beaches, good reefs and seafront resorts, but without the hustle of the cruise ports and the crowds of Ocho Rios. It's close enough (20-30 minutes) to do excursions to Dunn's River Falls and other attractions, but you return to a much more serene setting. It's perfect for truly relaxing.
What excursions can I do from Runaway Bay?+
Being in the parish of Saint Ann, it's a convenient base for excursions to Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birthplace, admission US$ 30-35), to Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios (admission US$ 25), and to the Green Grotto Caves in neighboring Discovery Bay (admission US$ 20). The easiest option is to go on an organized excursion with transfer or with a driver-guide, especially for the interior destinations.
Is it a good area for diving?+
Yes, Runaway Bay is known as one of the best dive spots on the north coast: the reefs start near the shore and form walls and coral gardens with lots of marine life. There are dive centers that offer outings from US$ 60-90 (discover-scuba or one-tank dive), courses and discover-scuba dives. Snorkeling is also accessible from some beaches for US$ 25-40. It's best to choose an operator with good references.
Is the Runaway Bay golf course still operating?+
No: the historic Runaway Bay Golf Club, an 18-hole par-72 course opened in 1960, closed permanently. Those looking for golf on the north coast should consider other courses in Jamaica, like those of Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. It's best to verify the current offering when planning the trip.
When is the best time to go?+
The dry season (mid-December to April) offers the best days of sun, calm seas and good visibility for diving, but it's high season with higher prices. From May to November it's hotter with brief showers and lower prices; hurricane season runs from June to November. Being a quiet destination, it can be enjoyed with few people almost year-round.
How do I get around the area?+
To get to Discovery Bay, Ocho Rios or the attractions, the most comfortable and safe option is licensed tourist taxis (US$ 15-30 for a short trip; agree the fare beforehand). For far-off excursions (Nine Mile), it's best to take an organized tour (US$ 80-130) or a driver-guide. Knutsford Express buses connect with Montego Bay (US$ 10-15) and Kingston, and have their own website and app to book and pay. Renting a car (US$ 45-75/day) gives freedom, but you drive on the left.
How do you pay for transport and is there a bus app?+
On the north coast (Saint Ann) the local transport is the route taxis (shared taxis with red 'PP' plates) and the minibuses, which are always paid in cash, in Jamaican dollars, to the driver (about J$ 150-350 per leg, fares regulated by the Transport Authority of Jamaica). There's no card or payment app for transport in the area: the cashless system with the JUTC Smarter Card only works on the city buses of Kingston. To plan, use Google Maps; the real-time bus location (Moovit included) has almost no coverage outside Kingston. The premium intercity Knutsford Express buses do have their own app for schedules, booking and payment (verified July 2026).
Where does the name 'Runaway Bay' come from?+
'Runaway Bay' means 'bay of the runaways', and its name is tied to legends of flight: some say enslaved people escaped from here toward Cuba in search of freedom, and others associate it with the flight of the last Spaniards when the English took Jamaica in 1655. The nearby caves, like the Green Grotto, served as a refuge for Maroons and runaways.
Is it worth leaving the resort?+
Yes. Although Runaway Bay invites you to stay on the lounger, going out lets you see the Green Grotto Caves with their history as a refuge (US$ 20), do the moving excursion to Nine Mile, see Dunn's River Falls and try the local food. Do it with common sense (trusted taxis) and you'll come away with a much richer experience than just staying on the hotel beach.
