Reach Falls

📌Location
Reach Falls is one of the most beautiful and remote waterfalls in Jamaica, hidden deep in the parish of Portland, on the east coast of the island, in the foothills of the John Crow Mountains. It's on the Driver's River, surrounded by dense rainforest, about 30-45 minutes by car southeast of Port Antonio, near the town of Manchioneal. Its waters are a crystal-clear turquoise green and fall in a series of drops over natural pools of polished limestone, in an unspoiled, little-altered setting. It's an officially managed attraction run by the Ministry of Tourism, with guides, and far less crowded than the waterfalls of the north coast.
📌Service city
Port Antonio, capital of Portland, is the service city for visiting Reach Falls: it has hotels, small resorts, restaurants, banks and ATMs, and is a base for the great attractions of the east (Blue Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove, the Rio Grande rafting). The east is the quietest and least touristy region of Jamaica. The nearest international airport is Norman Manley (KIN) in Kingston, about 2.5-3 hours by road; the one in Montego Bay (MBJ) is much farther away. The final access to the waterfalls is via rural mountain roads.
📌Best time to go
It can be visited year-round thanks to the tropical climate, but it's worth remembering that Portland is the rainiest area of Jamaica. The driest and most stable season runs from December to April, ideal for finding clear water and roads in better condition. In the rainy and hurricane season (June to November) the river can rise and become murky, and after very heavy rain the waterfalls can close for safety. It's best to arrive early in the morning.
📌Hours
Open Wednesday to Sunday (and holidays) from 8:30 to 16:30 approximately, with official site management. Verify when visiting, as the days and hours may be adjusted outside high season.
📌Language
The official language of Jamaica is English; in daily life people speak Jamaican Patois (Jamaican Patois or Creole). At the site the guides work in English and usually manage well with Spanish-speaking visitors.
📌Currency
Jamaican dollar (JMD / J$). Many tourist attractions also quote in US dollars (US$), and Reach Falls usually charges the non-resident admission in US$. It's best to bring cash for the admission, the guides and tips, since many stalls don't accept cards.
📌Suggested duration
A visit to Reach Falls generally takes between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on how much you want to swim, explore the pools and, above all, whether you do the famous 'river climb'. Adding the transfers from Port Antonio, it's best to set aside half a day.
📌Getting there
It's not a city: it's a waterfall inside a nature park. The usual base is Port Antonio (about 30-45 min by car). It's reached by rental car, licensed tourist taxi or organized tour; the final stretch is mountainous, with curves and a steep gradient.

Reach Falls is one of Jamaica's great hidden treasures: a waterfall of crystal-clear turquoise-green waters that tumbles in tiered drops over pools of polished limestone, deep in the rainforest of Portland, beside the John Crow Mountains. Remote, unspoiled and far less visited than the waterfalls of the north coast, it offers an almost intact nature experience, in one of the most beautiful and quiet corners of eastern Jamaica.

What makes Reach Falls special, besides its beauty, is the chance to explore it fully. The basic activity is bathing in the main pool at the foot of the waterfall, of a hypnotic turquoise color. But the real adventure is the 'river climb': a hike upriver with a local guide that leads you to discover hidden caves, natural slides carved by the water in the rock, small drops and secret pools that can't be seen from the entrance. It's an experience of nature and gentle adventure deep in the jungle.

This guide gathers the practical details for visiting Reach Falls sensibly: how to get there from Port Antonio and Kingston, what the visit includes, what the guided river climb is like, when it's best to go, the opening days and what to bring. It's an ideal stop for those who want to see the most authentic, natural Jamaica, away from the crowds, and it combines perfectly with the Blue Lagoon and the beaches of Portland.

📖 History of Reach Falls

Reach Falls is in the heart of Portland, on the Driver's River, in the foothills of the John Crow Mountains, one of the most unspoiled and biodiverse nature areas in Jamaica, today part of the setting of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015 for its natural and cultural values (linked, among others, to the Maroons, the enslaved people who took refuge in these mountains). The waterfalls were for a long time a place known mostly to local communities and adventurers, and appeared in the odd film production for their beauty. Over time they became an officially managed attraction, with guides and services, keeping their natural, uncrowded character, in tune with the quiet spirit of eastern Jamaica. The full history of the region is on our history page.

🗺️ What to see

1
The main waterfall and its turquoise pool
The iconic Reach Falls cascade tumbling over a pool of crystal-clear turquoise green, ideal for swimming.
The heart of Reach Falls is its main cascade: a waterfall that tumbles through the jungle over a wide natural pool of a crystal-clear turquoise-green color, one of the most beautiful images in all of Jamaica. The pool, with its pale limestone bottom, invites you to swim in its cool waters, float looking at the waterfall and let yourself be enveloped by the jungle setting. It's one of the most photogenic and relaxing swims on the island. The water of the Driver's River is exceptionally clear, letting you see the bottom and enjoy the intense turquoise color that changes with the light. Around it, the dense tropical vegetation, the polished rocks and the sound of the water create a magical atmosphere, of a hidden paradise. Unlike the more touristy waterfalls, here the atmosphere is usually quiet, with relatively few people. It's a place to take slowly, to swim, contemplate and rest. Best time: early in the morning, with fewer people, clear water and good light. Tips: water shoes or sandals with good grip for the slippery rocks, swimwear on, a towel and a dry bag if you want to bring your phone. The water can be cool, very refreshing in the full tropical heat. Follow the staff's instructions on where it's safe to swim.

The 'river climb' (guided climb up the river)
A hike-adventure upriver with a local guide, discovering caves, natural slides and hidden pools.
The great adventure of Reach Falls is the 'river climb': a hike-exploration upriver, guided by a local, that leads you to discover everything hidden beyond the main pool. Accompanied by the guide, the visitor climbs over the rocks, crosses stretches of river, passes through small drops and reaches secret corners that can't be seen from the entrance: hidden pools, caves and limestone formations carved by the water over thousands of years. One of the most famous moments is the discovery of an underwater cave and natural slides down which the water —and the visitors— glide between the pools. It's a gentle adventure experience, without great heights or dangerous jumps, but it requires moving carefully over slippery terrain and, on some stretches, swimming or climbing. The guide knows every step and marks out the safe path. It's what sets Reach Falls apart from a simple swim in a waterfall: the feeling of exploring a wild river deep in the jungle. Best time: with a stable flow; after heavy rain the river climb may not be safe and can close. Tips: always do it with the guide, water shoes essential, and speak up if you don't feel comfortable with any stretch; there are always options. It's customary to leave a tip for the guide for the service, in addition to the fixed fee.
ℹ️ Distance: Upriver from the main waterfall, Portland · Best time: Stable flow; avoid after heavy rain · Admission: The guided tour (with the Mandingo Cave) is usually included in the US$ 10 admission; it's customary to tip the guide (source: 2026 reviews, verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (the river climb)

The setting of the John Crow Mountains
The unspoiled jungle around the waterfall, part of one of the richest and most protected ecosystems in the Caribbean.
Reach Falls is located in the foothills of the John Crow Mountains, one of the most unspoiled and biodiverse nature regions in Jamaica and the Caribbean. This area is part of the setting of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015, both for its extraordinary natural richness —with endemic plant and animal species, that is, unique in the world— and for its cultural and historical value. The jungle that surrounds the waterfall is dense, humid and lush, fed by the abundant rains of Portland. Giant ferns, moss-covered trees, orchids, butterflies and the song of birds bring life to an almost intact setting, very different from the island's more developed tourist areas. Appreciating this natural frame is a fundamental part of the visit to Reach Falls. For nature lovers, it's a chance to glimpse one of the most valuable ecosystems in the Caribbean. Best time: the morning, when the wildlife is more active and the light is softer. Tips: bring insect repellent (it's a very humid, jungle area), biodegradable sunscreen, water to stay hydrated and respect for the surroundings: don't leave rubbish or damage the vegetation. If you're interested in the birds or the plants, ask the guide, who usually knows the region well.
ℹ️ Distance: Foothills of the John Crow Mountains, Portland · Best time: Morning, dry season · Admission: The setting is included in the general park admission (US$ 10, 2025) · Duration: Part of the general visit

Access trail and reception area
The short trail between the ticket office and the waterfall, with lookouts and local craft stalls.
Access to Reach Falls begins at a reception area with a ticket office, restrooms and the odd craft or snack stall, run by the official tourism body. From there, a short but stepped and sloping trail (about 10-15 minutes) descends through the jungle to the waterfall, with the odd lookout on the way that already lets you see the turquoise color of the water among the trees. The trail is signposted and generally in good condition, though it can be slippery after rain; footwear with good grip is advisable. Along the way it's common to come across local guides offering their services for the river climb, and sometimes vendors of cold coconut or bamboo-and-seed crafts. It's a good moment to ask at reception about the state of the river and the day's conditions, and to arrange the guide if you want to do the river climb. Tips: put on your water shoes from here, and leave valuables stored away or in the car.
ℹ️ Distance: Access trail, 10-15 min walk · Best time: All year, with caution after rain · Admission: Included in the general admission · Duration: 15-20 minutes (just the trail)
5
Boston Bay (on the way, birthplace of jerk)
The coastal town famous for being the origin of Jamaican jerk, an ideal stop on the way to or from Reach Falls.
Boston Bay is on the way between Port Antonio and Reach Falls, and it's a must-do detour for food lovers: it's considered the birthplace of Jamaican jerk, the technique of marinating and smoking meat with allspice (pimento) and Scotch bonnet chili over pimento wood. Several traditional stalls, some with decades of history, serve jerk chicken and pork fresh off the grill. Besides the food, Boston Bay has a small bay with waves that also made it a spot known for local surfing. It's a perfect stop for lunch before or after the waterfall, with rustic outdoor tables and a very authentic atmosphere. Tips: bring cash, ask for 'medium' jerk if you're not used to strong spice, and try the festival bread (a kind of sweet fritter) as a side.
ℹ️ Distance: Boston Bay, on the Port Antonio - Reach Falls route · Best time: Midday, lunchtime · Admission: Free (open access); you pay for the food · Duration: 30-60 minutes
6
Manchioneal (nearby fishing village)
A small, authentic fishing village near Reach Falls, with a quiet beach and genuine local life.
Manchioneal is the closest town to Reach Falls, a quiet fishing hamlet on the east coast, just off the mass tourist routes. It has a small bay with colorful boats beached on the sand, locals fishing or mending nets, and a very leisurely pace of life. It has no major formal tourist attractions, but it's a good place to glimpse the real rural and coastal Jamaica, have something cold at a local shop and see the town's day-to-day. Some visitors use it as a stop before or after Reach Falls to eat fresh fish. Tips: it's a small town, so move around respectfully and ask before photographing people. There are no major tourist services, so don't expect infrastructure like in Port Antonio.
ℹ️ Distance: A few minutes from Reach Falls, on the coast · Best time: Any time of day · Admission: Free (open town) · Duration: 30-45 minutes

❓ Frequently asked questions

How much does admission to Reach Falls cost?+
The general admission for non-residents costs US$ 10 per adult and US$ 5 per child (11 years or under). Jamaican residents with ID pay a reduced fare (about US$ 4.25). Admission includes a trained guide who accompanies the tour upriver through the pools and up to the Mandingo Cave, at no extra charge; it's customary to leave a tip for the guide. It's best to bring cash. (verified July 2026)
What is the Reach Falls 'river climb'?+
It's the star activity: a hike-adventure upriver, guided by a local, that leads you to explore what's hidden beyond the main pool. Climbing over the rocks, swimming and crossing small drops, you discover caves (including an underwater one), natural slides carved by the water and secret pools. It's gentle adventure, without great heights, but it requires moving carefully over slippery terrain and always doing it with the guide.
How is it different from Dunn's River Falls?+
Dunn's River, in Ocho Rios, is a large, very touristy waterfall climbed in a human chain, often packed. Reach Falls, on the other hand, is remote, unspoiled and quiet, deep in the Portland jungle, with crystal-clear turquoise waters, a lovely pool for swimming and the possibility of the river climb. Reach is ideal for those seeking intact nature, adventure and very few people.
What days does Reach Falls open?+
Reach Falls opens Wednesday to Sunday and holidays, from 8:30 to 16:30 approximately, with official site management. Since the hours can change outside high season, it's best to verify them before going, with your hotel or tour, so you don't arrive on a closing day.
Is it safe to swim and do the river climb?+
Yes, if you follow the instructions of the staff and guides. The main pool is safe for swimming in the designated areas. The river climb is always done with a guide who knows the river and marks out the safe path; it has no great heights, but the terrain is slippery and there are stretches where you swim or climb. It's best to know how to swim. After heavy rain, the river climb may close for safety.
What to bring for the visit?+
Swimwear on, water shoes or sandals with good grip (essential because of the slippery rocks), a towel, a change of dry clothes, insect repellent, biodegradable sunscreen and some cash (US$ 20-30) for the admission, the guide and tips. For photos in the water, a bag or waterproof case for your phone.
Is it worth combining Reach Falls with other Portland attractions?+
Yes. Portland concentrates several nearby jewels: the Blue Lagoon (where swimming is free, it's public land), the beaches of Frenchman's Cove and San San, the jerk of Boston Bay (which is on the way) and the bamboo-raft rafting on the Rio Grande. Many tours combine Reach Falls with the Blue Lagoon and a beach on a half-day or full-day outing (US$ 90-140 per person), an excellent way to discover eastern Jamaica.
Is there public transport to Reach Falls and how do you pay?+
There's no public bus or real-time transport app that reaches the waterfall: it's a rural mountain site. The practical thing is to go by licensed taxi from Port Antonio (US$ 35-55 one way, in cash, agreeing the fare beforehand), by rental car or on an organized tour. The route taxis (red 'PPV' plates) run along the coast toward Manchioneal and are paid in CASH (J$ 150-300), but they don't usually reach the entrance. All local transport is in cash; there's no card or payment app. For the intercity bus from Kingston, the Knutsford Express is paid by card on its website or app and reaches Port Antonio.
