Discovery Bay

📌Parish
Discovery Bay is a coastal town in the parish of Saint Ann, on Jamaica's north coast, west of Runaway Bay and Ocho Rios. Its name celebrates the fact that, according to tradition, it was here that Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica in 1494, during his second voyage. It is a quiet destination, known for the picturesque Puerto Seco Beach, the Green Grotto Caves and, curiously, for a large bauxite export terminal that coexists with tourism. It combines history, beach and a serene atmosphere, far from the bustle of the big tourist centers.
📌Service city
Discovery Bay is a small hub that relies on the services of the north coast. It has a beach, basic shops, restaurants and the base of a university marine laboratory, but for larger services (hospitals, big supermarkets) people turn to nearby Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. It has no airport: most travelers arrive via Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (around 1 hour) or via Kingston. It is a quiet base for exploring the Green Grotto Caves, Runaway Bay, Ocho Rios and Bob Marley's birthplace at Nine Mile.
📌Best time to go
Discovery Bay can be enjoyed year-round thanks to its warm tropical climate. The dry season (mid-December to April) is high season, with sunny days, calm sea and little rain, though with higher prices. From May to November it is hotter and there are brief afternoon showers, with lower prices; hurricane season runs from June to November. Being a quiet, village destination, Discovery Bay offers serene beaches almost year-round, ideal for those seeking relaxation and history without crowds.
📌Suggested days
With 1 or 2 days you can make the most of the essentials of Discovery Bay: some beach time at Puerto Seco Beach, the historic visit to the Green Grotto Caves and a quiet sunset over the bay where, according to tradition, Columbus arrived. With 3 days you can add excursions using Discovery Bay as a serene north-coast base: Dunn's River Falls and the gardens of Ocho Rios, Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birthplace) and the beaches and reefs of neighboring Runaway Bay. It is a destination designed more to combine history and rest than for an intense agenda.

Discovery Bay is a small town on Jamaica's north coast with a big place in history: here, according to tradition, Christopher Columbus landed in 1494, on his second voyage to the New World, and from that founding event comes its name, 'bay of the discovery'. That past gives a destination that is today quiet and beach-oriented a historical depth few places in the Caribbean can match.

Beyond the history, Discovery Bay offers a serene bay, the picturesque Puerto Seco Beach of pale sand and calm waters, and the fascinating Green Grotto Caves, a cave system that served as a refuge for Taíno, Spaniards, Maroons and smugglers over the centuries. It is also a curious place, where a large bauxite export terminal —the mineral from which aluminum is obtained— coexists with tourism and fishing, a reminder that Jamaica is much more than beaches.

This guide explores Discovery Bay with a practical and warm eye: where to enjoy its beaches, how to visit the Green Grotto Caves with their refuge history, what Columbus's landing meant, and how to use the town as a quiet base for exploring the north coast. It is the ideal destination for anyone who wants to combine relaxation, history and authenticity away from the crowds of the big tourist centers.

📖 History of Discovery Bay

Discovery Bay ('bay of the discovery') owes its name to the fact that, according to widely accepted tradition, it was here that Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica on May 5, 1494, during his second voyage, finding a bay with no fresh water in sight (hence the main beach being called 'Puerto Seco', dry port). Before the Europeans, the area was inhabited by the Taíno, who used the region's caves. During Spanish and later British rule (from 1655), the coast of Saint Ann was devoted to sugar plantations worked by enslaved people, and the area's Green Grotto Caves served as a refuge for Taíno, fleeing Spaniards, Maroons and smugglers. After the abolition of slavery in 1834, the region lived on fishing and agriculture. In the 20th century, Discovery Bay added a singular industrial chapter: it became an important export port for bauxite, the mineral from which aluminum is obtained, one of Jamaica's great industries. A leading university marine laboratory was also set up there. With the rise of tourism, the bay added its historical and beach appeal to the north coast circuit. Puerto Seco Beach
The main beach of Discovery Bay: pale sand, calm waters and a family atmosphere, with the memory of Columbus's landing.
Puerto Seco Beach is the best-known beach in Discovery Bay and the beach heart of the town. Its name, 'dry port', is associated with the tradition of Columbus's landing: when the Spanish arrived at this bay in 1494, they found no fresh water in sight, so they are said to have called it 'dry port'. Today it is a public beach developed as a beach complex (Puerto Seco Beach Park), with pale sand, calm, shallow waters, ideal for families. The beach offers services designed for a full day of relaxation and fun: sandy areas, calm waters for swimming, water games, food and drink areas, and sometimes inflatable attractions and activities for children. Being sheltered in the bay, the sea is usually calm, which makes it safe for the little ones and pleasant for everyone. It is a good place to spend the day without the crowds of the big destinations. From the beach you look out over the bay where, according to tradition, the European history of Jamaica began, which adds a special touch to the swim and the sunset. It is a more local and family beach than the big tourist beaches, with its own serene charm. Getting there: it is in the town of Discovery Bay itself, reachable by taxi or on foot from nearby lodgings. Best time: any sunny day; weekends usually have more of a local buzz. Tips: admission is around J$ 2,000 (approx. US$ 13, adults) and J$ 1,000 (children), 2025; bring cash for admission and services, and sunscreen. A good option for a family day.

Green Grotto Caves
A limestone cave system with an underground lake, a historic refuge for Taíno, Spaniards, Maroons and smugglers.
The Green Grotto Caves are the unmissable attraction of Discovery Bay and one of the most singular on Jamaica's north coast: a system of limestone caves and galleries with stalactites, stalagmites and a serene underground lake of crystal-clear water, the Grotto Lake. The guided tour goes through the cave's chambers while explaining their geology, their fauna (including a colony of bats) and, above all, their fascinating history as a refuge. Because these caves are a true summary of Jamaican history. It is believed the Taíno used them in pre-Columbian times; that the last Spaniards hid in them during the English conquest of 1655; that they served as a refuge for Maroons (runaway enslaved people) and for smugglers trafficking rum and weapons; and that during World War II rum was stored inside them. Touring them is to travel through the centuries of the island. The visit, always guided for safety, lasts about an hour and combines the appeal of the rock formations with tales of legends and historical facts. The illuminated underground lake is one of the most striking moments. It is an experience that unites nature, geology and history, suitable for all ages. Today the site operates under the Chukka Caribbean Adventures brand. Getting there: they are in Discovery Bay itself, a few minutes from the town; easily reached by taxi or on an excursion. Best time: any day; the cave interior maintains a pleasant temperature. Tips: standard admission costs about US$ 20 adults and US$ 10 children 4 to 12 (2025), open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; bring comfortable non-slip footwear and a light layer.

The site of Columbus's landing (1494)
The bay where, according to tradition, Columbus reached Jamaica in 1494, a founding point of Caribbean history.
Discovery Bay takes its name from a first-order historical event: here, according to widely accepted tradition, Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica on May 5, 1494, during his second voyage to the New World. That arrival marked the beginning of the European presence on the island the Taíno called 'Xaymaca', and that is why the bay is known as Discovery Bay, the 'bay of the discovery'. Visiting Discovery Bay with this history in mind gives the place another dimension: gazing at the serene bay, imagining the caravels arriving at a coast inhabited by the Taíno and understanding that here began one of the great encounters (and clashes) of history. Although there is no great spectacular monument, the value of the site is above all symbolic and historical, and it is usually marked with commemorative markers or plaques at Columbus Park. It is important to remember that that 'discovery' was, for the native peoples, the beginning of a catastrophe: colonization brought disease, slavery and the near disappearance of the Taíno within a few decades. Knowing the full history, with its light and shadow, enriches the visit and honors the memory of those who already lived on these shores. Getting there: the site is in the bay of Discovery Bay itself, next to the town; it is appreciated from the coast and the nearby viewpoints. Best time: during the day, combined with the beach and the caves; the sunset over the bay is very beautiful. Tips: combine it with the visit to the Green Grotto Caves and Puerto Seco Beach for a day focused on the history and scenery of the bay.
ℹ️ Distance: In the bay of Discovery Bay, next to the town · Best time: During the day; very beautiful sunset over the bay · Admission: Free (take in the bay and the historical markers) · Duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour

Snorkeling and diving in the bay
Calm waters and nearby reefs, with a marine laboratory that studies the underwater richness of the area.
The bay of Discovery Bay and its surroundings offer good conditions for snorkeling and diving, thanks to their calm waters and the coral reefs found close to the coast. The area is also scientifically relevant: Discovery Bay is home to a leading university marine laboratory (linked to the University of the West Indies), which for decades has studied the coral reefs of the Caribbean, which gives an idea of the marine richness of the place. For the visitor, this translates into the chance to explore an underwater world with tropical fish, corals and other forms of marine life, whether snorkeling near the surface or diving for those with experience or who want to get started. The calm waters of the bay make it suitable for beginners, and some operators and north-coast resorts offer outings to the points of interest. As throughout the Caribbean, the reefs are fragile and threatened, so it's best to snorkel and dive responsibly: don't touch or step on the corals and use 'reef-safe' sunscreen. It is a beautiful and respectful way to get to know the underwater side of Jamaica. Getting there: the outings and water access start from the beaches and operators of the area; it's best to ask locally. Best time: calm-sea days with good visibility, more frequent in the dry season. Tips: a guided snorkeling outing runs about US$ 25-45 per person (1-2 h, 2025); an intro dive with an instructor, about US$ 70-100. Use reef-safe sunscreen and don't touch the corals.
ℹ️ Distance: In the bay of Discovery Bay and nearby reefs · Best time: Calm sea and good visibility (dry season) · Admission: Guided snorkeling US$ 25-45; intro dive US$ 70-100 (2025, verify on visiting) · Duration: A few hours

Excursion to Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birthplace)
The hill town of Saint Ann where Bob Marley was born and rests, one of the great inland excursions.
From Discovery Bay, being in the parish of Saint Ann, one of the most moving and recommended excursions is the visit to Nine Mile, the hill town where Robert Nesta 'Bob' Marley, the most universal Jamaican musician, was born on February 6, 1945, and where his remains also rest in a mausoleum. The visit, guided by members of the Rastafari community, goes through the little wooden house where Marley grew up, the famous 'pillow stone' that inspired his songs and the mausoleum where he is buried. The atmosphere is very special, with music in the background, tales of his life and the Rastafari spirituality that pervades the place. It is an essential pilgrimage for reggae lovers. The road to Nine Mile, through the green mountains of interior Saint Ann, is part of the experience: you cross villages, plantations and rural landscapes that show a Jamaica very different from the coast. It is a culturally rich excursion that connects with the deep roots of the island. Getting there: Nine Mile is in the hills; the most advisable option is to go on an organized excursion with transfer or with a driver-guide, along the mountain roads. Best time: any day; it's best to set off early. Tips: admission to the mausoleum with a guide runs about US$ 30-35 per adult and US$ 15 children (2025); tours with transfer from the north coast start at about US$ 90-130 per person, depending on distance and operator.
ℹ️ Distance: In the hills of Saint Ann; excursion with transfer or driver-guide · Best time: Any day; set off early because of the distance · Admission: US$ 30-35 adults, US$ 15 children (admission only, 2025); tour with transfer US$ 90-130 · Duration: Half a day to a full day with transfers

Columbus Park and bay viewpoints
A small open-air museum about the history of the area, with colonial and industrial pieces and views of the bay.
Near Discovery Bay is Columbus Park, a small open-air museum located at a viewpoint over the bay, designed to recall the history of the area since Columbus's landing. It is a simple but interesting park that brings together a heterogeneous collection of historical pieces related to the region's past: colonial remnants, machinery from the sugar plantation era, anchors, cannons, mill wheels and objects linked to the industry and life of the north coast. The visit combines historical interest with scenery: from the viewpoint you look out over the bay of Discovery Bay, right where tradition places Columbus's arrival in 1494, which helps you imagine that founding moment. It is a good place for a brief stop, to take photos and understand a little more about the history of the area, from the Taíno to the industrial era. It is a modest attraction, more for those interested in history than for those seeking great museums, but its combination of views and open-air pieces makes it a pleasant complement to the visit to Discovery Bay. Getting there: it is near the bay of Discovery Bay, reachable by taxi; it's best to confirm its condition and hours, since small attractions can vary. Best time: during the day, with good light for the views. Tips: access is free or very low cost (no formal admission is charged); combine it with the site of Columbus's landing and the Green Grotto Caves.
ℹ️ Distance: Near the bay of Discovery Bay (taxi) · Best time: During the day, with good light for the views · Admission: Free (open access to the open-air park) · Duration: 30 to 45 minutes

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Discovery Bay?+
Discovery Bay means 'bay of the discovery' and owes its name to the fact that, according to widely accepted tradition, it was here that Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica on May 5, 1494, during his second voyage. Since the Spanish found no fresh water in sight, the main beach is called 'Puerto Seco' (dry port). It is one of the founding places of the island's history.
How much does it cost to enter the Green Grotto Caves?+
Standard admission is around US$ 20 per adult and US$ 10 for children 4 to 12, and includes the compulsory guided tour of about an hour (source: Green Grotto Caves / local operators, verified July 2026). Jamaican residents pay local rates in Jamaican dollars. It's best to confirm the price at the time of your visit, as it may be updated.
What are the must-sees in Discovery Bay?+
The must-sees are the Green Grotto Caves, a cave system with an underground lake and a fascinating history as a refuge for Taíno, Spaniards, Maroons and smugglers; Puerto Seco Beach for a family beach day; and the site of Columbus's landing, with the nearby Columbus Park and its views of the bay. It is an ideal base for excursions to Nine Mile and Ocho Rios.
When is the best time to go?+
The dry season (mid-December to April) offers the best sunny days and calm sea, but it is high season with higher prices. From May to November it is hotter and there are brief showers, with lower prices; hurricane season runs from June to November. Being a quiet destination, it can be enjoyed with few people almost year-round.
How do I get around the area?+
To get to Runaway Bay, Ocho Rios or the attractions, the most comfortable and safe option is licensed tourist taxis (red 'PP' plates; agree the fare beforehand; short trips are around US$ 10-20). The local route taxis and minibuses are much cheaper (J$100-300 per leg) but have no schedule or app: you flag them on the road and pay in cash, in small bills, when getting off. Renting a car (US$ 45-75/day) gives you freedom, but you drive on the left. (verified July 2026)
Is it true there's a bauxite plant?+
Yes, Discovery Bay has a curious coexistence between tourism and industry: it is home to an important bauxite export terminal, the mineral from which aluminum is obtained and one of Jamaica's great industries. It does not affect the tourist attractions or the beaches, but it is part of the landscape and the economic history of the area, a reminder that Jamaica is much more than beaches.
How many days do I need in Discovery Bay?+
With 1 or 2 days you make the most of the essentials: Puerto Seco Beach, the Green Grotto Caves and the site of Columbus's landing. With 3 days you can use Discovery Bay as a quiet base for excursions to Ocho Rios (Dunn's River Falls), Nine Mile (Bob Marley) and neighboring Runaway Bay. It is a destination for combining history and rest, not for an intense agenda.
Is it safe for tourists?+
Discovery Bay is a quiet town and the tourist areas can be enjoyed well with basic precautions: carry little cash, don't display valuables, mind your phone and travel by trusted taxi at night. Use licensed tourist taxis to get around and the usual common sense of any trip. It is a more serene destination than the big tourist centers.
