📌Location
West Bay is a beach and tourist area located at the western tip of the island of Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands, in the Honduran Caribbean Sea (Bay Islands department). It's the most famous beach in Roatán and one of the most celebrated in Honduras: a strip of fine white sand beside a turquoise sea, with the coral reef of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System just a few meters from the shore. It's very close to West End, the island's lively tourist town, with which it's often confused, but they are different places: West End is the town with nightlife and services; West Bay is the great postcard beach
📌Service city
The island of Roatán is the service base. It has Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB), near the main town of Coxen Hole, which receives domestic and international flights. Roatán also has a cruise port (Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay). West End, a few minutes from West Bay, concentrates banks, ATMs, supermarkets, dive centers, restaurants, bars and most of the nightlife. West Bay has resorts, hotels, beach restaurants and dive operators, but for errands and shopping it's best to go to West End or Coxen Hole
📌Best time to go
The climate is warm tropical year-round, ideal for the beach and the sea. The dry and sunnier season runs roughly from March to September, with good visibility for snorkeling and diving and a generally calm sea. The rainy season runs from October to February, with more clouds and showers, though they remain warm days. The Caribbean hurricane season (June to November) rarely hits head-on, but it's wise to follow the forecast. West Bay is enjoyable practically year-round; the dry months offer the best underwater conditions
📌Suggested days
West Bay can be visited in a day (beach and snorkeling from the shore), but the usual thing is to stay in Roatán for several days and combine the beach with diving, excursions and the life of West End. With 3 or 4 days you can fully enjoy West Bay beach, snorkel or do an intro/dive course, visit West End and see a bit of the island. With 5 to 7 days you can add diving at several sites, an excursion to a marine park or the island's nature, a day of total relaxation and, if you like, a getaway to Utila or the Cayos Cochinos

There are beaches that justify a whole trip, and West Bay is one of them. At the western tip of the island of Roatán, this strip of fine white sand slides toward a sea of an almost unreal turquoise, with the coral reef just a few strokes from the shore. It's the image of the Caribbean you imagine before you know it: palm trees, warm, transparent water and, beneath the surface, one of the most accessible snorkeling spectacles in the world, because the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System —the second largest on the planet— is literally right there, meters from where you dip your feet.
West Bay is, above all, a beach to enjoy: lying in the sun, swimming in calm waters, snorkeling directly from the sand among colorful fish and corals, and watching a spectacular sunset fall over the sea. Resorts, hotels and beach restaurants have grown up around it, but a few minutes away is West End, Roatán's tourist town, more informal and bohemian, with its sand streets, its bars, its nightlife and the island's greatest concentration of dive centers. The combination of the two —the postcard beach and the town with a scene— is what makes this corner so complete.
This guide covers the essentials of West Bay with a practical and warm eye: how to get to Roatán and reach the beach, what to do (snorkeling, diving, beach, sunsets), the difference from West End, how to look after the reef and what to keep in mind to enjoy it without trouble. It's one of the great beach destinations of the Central American Caribbean and the perfect gateway to the underwater world of Honduras.
West Bay is part of Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands, a Caribbean archipelago with a history as rich as its waters. Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples (linked to the Pech and other groups of the region), the islands were sighted by Europeans at the start of the 16th century. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Roatán and its neighbors were a refuge for English, French and Dutch pirates and corsairs who raided the Spanish fleets, and the scene of the dispute between the Spanish Crown and British interests in the Caribbean. In 1797, the British deported thousands of Garifuna to the island of Roatán from St. Vincent, giving rise to the presence of this Afro-Indigenous people on the Honduran coast. Roatán was under British influence and control for much of the 19th century, until it was recognized as part of Honduras in the middle of that century. The island's population mixes English-speaking Afro-Caribbean roots, Garifuna and mainland Hondurans. During the 20th century, Roatán went from living off fishing and seafaring to becoming, in recent decades, one of the great diving and beach destinations of the Caribbean, with West Bay as its star beach. The full story is on our history page.

1
West Bay Beach
Fine white sand, turquoise calm sea, palm trees and sunsets: the postcard beach of Roatán.
West Bay beach is the great star and the reason many people travel to Roatán. It's a strip of white, fine, soft sand that stretches along the western tip of the island, bathed by a sea of turquoise tones and calm, protected by the reef that breaks the swell a short distance away. The result is a beach of tranquil, warm and transparent waters, ideal both for swimming and for simply floating and relaxing.
Along the beach are spread resorts, hotels and restaurants with seafront areas, plus more open stretches. On the sand there are people renting chairs and umbrellas, and the restaurants offer food and drink almost with your feet in the water. Despite the tourist development, access to the beach is public (beaches in Honduras are public), though some services and lounger areas belong to the establishments.
One of the great moments of West Bay is the sunset: being oriented to the west, it offers spectacular sunsets over the sea, which many enjoy from the sand or from a beach bar with a drink in hand. Tips: bring reef-safe (biodegradable) sunscreen so as not to damage the reef, watch your belongings on the sand, stay well hydrated in the heat and, if you want quiet, go early or choose the less busy stretches.
ℹ️ Distance: Western tip of Roatán; a few minutes from West End · Best time to go: Year-round; spectacular sunsets; dry season for the best sea · Entry: Free (public beach); chairs and umbrellas US$ 5-10 per day; hotel services separate · Duration: Half a day or more

Snorkeling on the West Bay reef
The coral reef a few meters from the shore: snorkeling straight from the beach among fish and corals.
One of the great miracles of West Bay is that you don't need a boat excursion to see the reef: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest in the world, is just a few meters from the shore. That makes West Bay one of the best places on the planet to snorkel directly from the beach, simply swimming out until you reach the coral wall.
The reef forms a kind of living wall parallel to the beach: inside it, the water is shallow, calm and clear, ideal for swimming; when you reach the edge, the bottom drops and a world of hard and soft corals, sponges, sea fans and an abundant fauna of reef fish of all colors appears —parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant majors, surgeonfish—, plus, with luck, rays, turtles and other creatures. Visibility is usually excellent.
You can snorkel on your own (with your own or rented gear) or join guided outings. The fundamental thing is environmental awareness: coral is a fragile living being. Tips: don't touch or stand on the coral, keep your distance, don't chase or feed the fish, use reef-safe sunscreen and, if you're not a strong swimmer, use a vest or float. Be careful when crossing the reef toward open sea, where there may be a current.
ℹ️ Distance: A few meters from the shore of West Bay (snorkeling from the beach) · Best time to go: Days of calm sea and good visibility (dry season) · Entry: Free from the beach; gear rental US$ 10-15/day; guided boat tour US$ 25-40 per person (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 3 hours

Diving in Roatán
One of the best and most affordable diving destinations in the Caribbean, with walls, coral gardens and marine life.
Roatán is world-famous for diving, and West Bay is one of its gateways. The Mesoamerican reef surrounding the island offers an enormous variety of dive sites: vertical walls dropping into the blue, coral gardens, canyons, wrecks (sunken ships) and shallow reefs ideal for beginners. Marine life is abundant: turtles, moray eels, lobsters, fish of all colors and, depending on the season and site, rays and sharks.
The island is also one of the cheapest places in the world to get certified as a diver: there are numerous dive centers, many in West End and also in West Bay (Roatan Divers, West Bay Divers, Clearwater Adventures, Sundivers and others), offering everything from an intro or 'discover scuba' to try it for the first time, to full PADI or SSI certification courses at very competitive prices, and outings for already-certified divers. It's a perfect destination both to start and to add dives.
For those who don't want to dive with a tank, snorkeling already gives you a lot, but diving opens access to the walls and the life of the deep reef. Tips: choose a serious, certified dive center, don't go to depths you're not trained for, respect the coral and the wildlife, and leave a margin between the last dive and a flight (because of decompression). Book ahead in high season.
ℹ️ Distance: Sites around Roatán; dive centers in West Bay and West End · Best time to go: Year-round; dry season for the best visibility · Entry: Intro dive (discover scuba) US$ 90-130; PADI/SSI Open Water course US$ 350-450; two-tank dive for certified divers US$ 80-100 (verified July 2026; verify when booking) · Duration: Half a day (outing) to several days (certification course)

West End (neighboring tourist town)
The informal, bohemian town of Roatán, with a sand street, restaurants, bars, diving and nightlife.
A few minutes from West Bay beach is West End, Roatán's quintessential tourist town and a perfect complement to the beach. Although they're confused, they're not the same: West Bay is the great white-sand beach; West End is the town, with its sand main street running parallel to the sea, full of restaurants, bars, shops, hostels, hotels and the island's greatest concentration of dive centers.
West End has a more informal, backpacker and bohemian atmosphere than the West Bay resorts. It's the place to eat varied and at good prices, have a drink facing the sea, go out at night (it has the best nightlife on the island) and arrange diving and excursions. It also has beach stretches and docks from which to swim and snorkel, and from its coast depart many dive outings and the boats to West Bay.
The classic combination in Roatán is to stay or spend the beach day in West Bay and go down to West End to eat, go out and arrange activities, or vice versa. They're connected by a short road and by a water taxi service that crosses by sea between them. Tips: the water taxi is a comfortable and picturesque way to move between West End and West Bay; at night, in West End, use common sense as in any tourist area.
ℹ️ Distance: A few minutes from West Bay (short road or water taxi) · Best time to go: Year-round; by day to eat and dive, by night for the scene · Entry: Free to wander the town; spending and activities as you choose · Duration: A few hours or a whole night
5
Sunsets and beach bars
Sunsets over the sea from the sand, with a drink in hand: one of West Bay's rituals.
West Bay faces west, and that gives it one of its great moments: the sunset. When the sun begins to drop, the sky and the sea turn shades of orange, pink and violet, and the beach becomes a natural lookout over the Caribbean. Watching the sun fall with your feet in the sand is one of the essential rituals of any stay in Roatán.
Along the beach and at the hotels and resorts there are bars and restaurants with seafront areas, many designed precisely for enjoying the sunset with a cocktail, a cold beer or a coconut water. It's an ideal plan to close a day of beach and snorkeling, watch the spectacle of the sun sinking into the horizon and then, if you like, continue the night in West End.
Beyond the sunset, the beach bars are part of the relaxed charm of West Bay: soft music, hammocks, food facing the sea and that unhurried Caribbean rhythm. Tips: arrive early to get a good spot in high season, bring cash or card depending on the place, and combine it with a quiet beach day. For photos, the exact moment of the sunset lasts a short time: get the camera or phone ready in advance.
ℹ️ Distance: Along West Bay beach · Best time to go: Year-round, at sunset; clear days for the best colors · Entry: The sunset is free; cocktails and orders US$ 5-12 at beach bars (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours (sunset and a drink)

Excursion to Cayos Cochinos
A protected archipelago off the coast of Roatán, with pristine beaches, snorkeling and Garifuna communities.
The Cayos Cochinos are a small archipelago of protected coral islands and islets, located off the north coast of Honduras, at a navigable distance from Roatán via organized full-day excursions. It's one of the best-preserved marine areas in the country, with almost pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and a coral reef in excellent condition, home to rich marine biodiversity.
The typical excursion combines navigation among the cays, beach time on one of the islets, snorkeling over the reef (with the chance to see the pink iguana, a species endemic to the cays, on the largest island) and, on some tours, a stop at the Garifuna community of Chachahuate, a fishing village built on a tiny cay, of great cultural and photographic value.
It's a more demanding outing in time and logistics than the activities within Roatán, so it's wise to book it ahead and check which operators offer it from the island, since availability may vary by season. Tips: bring reef-safe sunscreen, some cash for the local communities, and plan the full day in advance.
ℹ️ Distance: Archipelago off the north coast; full-day excursion from Roatán · Best time to go: Dry season, calmer sea for the navigation · Entry: US$ 80-150 per person (full-day tour, verified July 2026; verify availability and operator) · Duration: Full day

❓ Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between West Bay and West End?+
They're often confused, but they are different places in the west of Roatán. West Bay is the great beach of white sand and turquoise sea, with resorts and beach restaurants, ideal for swimming and snorkeling from the shore. West End is the tourist town, with a sand street, bars, restaurants, hostels, the greatest concentration of dive centers and the island's nightlife. They're a few minutes apart and connected by road and by water taxi (US$ 3-5 per person).
Can you snorkel from the beach?+
Yes, and it's one of the great attractions. The Mesoamerican reef is a few meters from the shore of West Bay, so you can snorkel by swimming directly from the beach, with no need for a boat. You'll see corals, colorful fish and, with luck, turtles or rays. That said: don't touch or step on the coral, use biodegradable sunscreen and be careful with the current when crossing the reef toward open sea.
Is it a good place to learn to dive?+
Excellent. Roatán is one of the cheapest destinations in the world to get certified as a diver, with numerous dive centers (many in West End and West Bay) offering everything from an intro dive (US$ 90-130) to try it to full PADI or SSI courses (US$ 350-450). The reef has sites for all levels. Choose a serious, certified center, and leave a margin between the last dive and your flight.
How do I get to West Bay?+
Roatán has an international airport (RTB), with domestic flights (from La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, US$ 70-180) and international ones depending on the season. You can also arrive by Galaxy Wave ferry from La Ceiba to Coxen Hole (US$ 30-40, 1.5 h). From the airport or the port, you reach West Bay by taxi (about 30-45 minutes, US$ 15-25). Between West End and West Bay you can move by taxi or by the picturesque water taxi over the sea.
Is the beach public or private?+
In Honduras beaches are public, so access to the sand of West Bay is free. What does belong to the hotels, resorts and restaurants are their facilities, lounger areas and services, which are paid for (chairs and umbrellas US$ 5-10) or require a purchase. You can enjoy the beach on your own or use the services of an establishment.
When is it best to go?+
West Bay is enjoyable almost year-round because of its warm climate. The dry season (roughly March to September) offers more sun, calm sea and better visibility for snorkeling and diving. The rainy season (October to February) brings more clouds and showers, though it remains warm. The hurricane season (June to November) rarely hits head-on, but it's wise to follow the forecast.
How do I look after the reef when snorkeling or diving?+
The reef is a fragile and vital living being. Don't touch it or stand on the coral, keep your distance, don't chase, touch or feed the fish and wildlife, don't collect corals or shells, and use reef-safe (biodegradable) sunscreen, since common sunscreens damage the coral. Take all your trash with you. Looking after it ensures West Bay stays as spectacular as it is.
How do I get around Roatán and how do I pay for transport?+
Within West Bay and West End you walk; between the two, the classic option is the water taxi (US$ 3 per person by day with a group, US$ 5 alone/at night), a 10-minute crossing by sea. For the airport, Coxen Hole or long distances you use a taxi: there's NO Uber or InDrive on the island and the taxis have no meter, so agree the price beforehand (about US$ 15 to West End, US$ 25 to the airport). Everything is paid in cash, and in Roatán both dollars and lempiras circulate. There are cheaper island colectivos but less practical for West Bay. To orient yourself, use Google Maps; Moovit has no data for Honduras (verified July 2026).
