📌Location
Between the departments of Cortés, Comayagua and Santa Bárbara (Honduras), in the west-central part of the country. Lake Yojoa is the largest natural lake in Honduras, a mirror of fresh water surrounded by mountains, cloud forest and two national parks (Cerro Azul Meámbar and Santa Bárbara). It sits on the highway linking San Pedro Sula with Tegucigalpa, which makes it very accessible. It's a paradise for birdwatching (more than 200 recorded species), nature, waterfalls and good food, famous for its fried-fish diners and for a pioneering craft brewery
📌Service city
There's no large city beside the lake, but rather towns and communities on its shores and surroundings (like Peña Blanca, the area's main service center, and Los Naranjos). There, and in the area's lodges and hotels, you'll find lodging, diners and excursion operators. The reference big cities are San Pedro Sula and Comayagua, both about an hour to an hour and a half away. You get there easily via the main highway (CA-5). The area is well geared toward ecotourism
📌Best time to go
Lake Yojoa is in a mountain zone, with a temperate and often misty, humid climate, cooler than the lowlands. The dry season (November to April) is the best for excursions, waterfalls and hikes, with better weather. The rainy season (May to October) brings lots of greenery and water in the waterfalls, but also mud and mist. Birdwatching is excellent all year, with peaks depending on migratory species (especially October to April). The lake can be enjoyed at any time of year for its nature
📌Suggested days
With 1 to 2 days you enjoy the essentials of Lake Yojoa: a boat or kayak trip on the lake, birdwatching, a visit to the Pulhapanzak waterfall, eating fried fish by the water and trying the local craft beer. With 3 to 4 days you can add hiking in the Cerro Azul Meámbar or Santa Bárbara national parks, visiting the Los Naranjos archaeological site, touring coffee farms and enjoying the nature and cuisine at a relaxed pace. It's ideal as a stop on the route between San Pedro Sula and the center of the country

Loading weather…
Lake Yojoa is one of the most beautiful and surprising natural corners of Honduras: the country's largest natural lake, an enormous mirror of fresh water set among mountains covered in forest, mist and greenery, in the heart of the west-central region. Surrounded by two national parks —Cerro Azul Meámbar and Santa Bárbara— the lake and its surroundings are a paradise for nature lovers, and especially for birdwatchers: more than 200 species have been recorded, making it one of the best birdwatching destinations in Central America.
But Yojoa is also synonymous with good living and good eating. Its shores are dotted with diners famous for their fresh fried fish, served with fried plantain slices, one of the most beloved gastronomic experiences for Hondurans, who come to the lake especially to eat. The area is also home to a pioneering craft brewery, spectacular waterfalls like Pulhapanzak, coffee farms, springs, caves and an archaeological site. All a step from the highway linking San Pedro Sula with Tegucigalpa, which makes it very accessible.
This guide covers Lake Yojoa with a practical and warm eye: how to enjoy the lake and its wildlife, where the waterfalls and national parks are, what to eat (and where to try the craft beer), how to watch birds and how to get there and around. For the traveler seeking nature, tranquility, good food and fresh mountain air, without straying too far from the main routes, Yojoa is a delightful stop and a destination that combines ecotourism and pleasure like few others in Honduras.
📖 History of Lake Yojoa
The Lake Yojoa region was inhabited from pre-Hispanic times, and its shores hold an important testimony: the Los Naranjos archaeological site, one of the oldest settlements in Honduras, with occupation dating back more than two thousand years and linked to cultures in the zone of influence between the Maya world and the peoples of the country's center (Lenca and others). The lake, of natural origin (associated with the region's volcanic and tectonic activity), was always a point of attraction for its abundance of water, fishing and resources. During the colonial and republican eras, the area remained rural, dedicated to agriculture, fishing and, later, to activities like mining in the nearby mountains. The construction of the highway linking San Pedro Sula with Tegucigalpa, passing beside the lake, integrated it into the country's main routes and encouraged the emergence of the fried-fish diners that made it famous gastronomically. In recent decades, Lake Yojoa consolidated as an ecotourism destination, with the creation of protected areas (the Cerro Azul Meámbar and Santa Bárbara national parks) to conserve its forests and biodiversity, and with the development of nature tourism, birdwatching and gastronomy. The area also faces environmental challenges (pollution, pressure on the lake), which motivate conservation efforts. The full story is on our history page.

The lake and birdwatching
Honduras's largest lake, a birdwatching paradise, with boat and kayak trips among the mountains.
Lake Yojoa itself is the heart of the experience: the largest natural lake in Honduras, a wide mirror of fresh water surrounded by green mountains and, often, wrapped in mist, which creates landscapes of great beauty and serenity. Touring it by boat or kayak, gliding across its calm waters with the mountains and national parks as a backdrop, is one of the area's great pleasures, ideal at dawn or dusk.
Yojoa is, above all, one of the best destinations in Central America for birdwatching. More than 200 species have been recorded on the lake and its surroundings, both resident and migratory, thanks to the diversity of habitats it combines: the water mirror, the wetlands and reed beds along the shores, the mountain forest and the cloud forest of the nearby parks. Waterbirds, herons, kingfishers, tanagers, toucans, hummingbirds and raptors are just some of the groups you can spot.
The shores and wetlands can be toured by boat or kayak with specialized bird guides, especially at dawn, when activity is at its peak. It's best to bring binoculars, comfortable clothing in neutral colors, repellent, sunscreen and plenty of patience. Getting there: access from Peña Blanca, Los Naranjos and the shoreside lodges. Best time: dawn for the birds; migratory species from October to April.
ℹ️ Distance: Lake and shores; access from Peña Blanca and Los Naranjos · Best time to go: Dawn for the birds; migratory species from October to April · Entry: Kayak/boat trip US$ 10-25 per person/hour; guided birdwatching tour US$ 25-45 per person (verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day

Pulhapanzak waterfall
A spectacular 43-meter waterfall, with a trail, viewpoint and the chance for a tour behind the falls.
The Pulhapanzak Falls, on the Río Lindo in San Buenaventura (half an hour from the lake and an hour from San Pedro Sula), are the tallest waterfall and one of the most visited in Honduras: an imposing 43-meter drop of water that falls with force amid the tropical vegetation, generating a curtain of spray and a cool, humid microclimate around it.
The main attraction is admiring the waterfall from the park's viewpoints and trails. But Pulhapanzak also offers a unique adventure experience: a guided tour that takes visitors behind and inside the curtain of water, through caves and passages beside the falls, an intense and wet activity (not for everyone). There's also canopy (zipline) and river tubing, and you can camp on the grounds.
Pulhapanzak is ideal for a half-day outing, combining nature, photography and, for the more adventurous, the adrenaline of the tour behind the waterfall. It's best to bring clothes that can get wet, shoes with good grip and always follow the guides' instructions. Getting there: by your own transport, taxi or tour from the lake area (30 min from Peña Blanca). Best time: year-round; more water flow in the rainy season. Open every day from 7:00 to 18:00.
ℹ️ Distance: San Buenaventura, on the Río Lindo, 30 min from the lake; open every day 7:00-18:00 · Best time to go: Year-round; more water flow in the rainy season · Entry: L 80-125 (US$ 3-5); tour behind the falls L 400; canopy L 550; tubing L 550; camping L 200 (verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day

Cerro Azul Meámbar and Santa Bárbara National Parks
Two cloud-forest parks surrounding the lake, with trails, waterfalls, wildlife and mountains for hiking.
Lake Yojoa is flanked by two important national parks that protect the mountain and cloud forests surrounding it. To the east is Cerro Azul Meámbar National Park (PANACAM), and to the west Montaña de Santa Bárbara National Park, which protects one of the highest mountains in Honduras. Both offer lush nature and excellent hiking opportunities.
Cerro Azul Meámbar Park (PANACAM) is the most accessible and developed for ecotourism: it has a visitor center and lodge, a network of trails of over 7 km with waterfalls, springs, viewpoints overlooking the lake and two bird-observation towers (excellent for seeing toucans, motmots, trogons and raptors). It's ideal for half-day or full-day hikes. Santa Bárbara Park, wilder, protects a limestone mountain with caves and a forest rich in biodiversity, with more demanding hikes.
It's best to visit them with a guide (especially for the long hikes), register at the visitor centers, and bring water, suitable footwear, repellent, sunscreen and warm layers. Getting there: PANACAM is 1.5 h from San Pedro Sula via the CA-5, La Guama exit (10 extra minutes). Best time: dry season for hiking.
ℹ️ Distance: Cerro Azul Meámbar (PANACAM) to the east; Santa Bárbara to the west; PANACAM 1.5 h from San Pedro Sula (La Guama exit) · Best time to go: Dry season (November to April) for hiking · Entry: PANACAM trails L 100-150; mountain guide US$ 20-35/day (verified July 2026) · Duration: Half a day to a full day

Fried fish and the lake's cuisine
The famous fried-fish diners by the lake, an iconic gastronomic experience of Honduras.
Eating fried fish by Lake Yojoa is one of the most iconic and beloved gastronomic experiences in Honduras, and an almost obligatory stop for anyone passing through the area. Along the shore and the highway that borders the lake, numerous diners and open-air eateries specializing in fresh fried fish line up, usually tilapia or other lake fish, served whole and crispy, accompanied by fried plantain slices and pickled vegetables.
This feast of fried fish is a classic that Hondurans come to especially, above all on weekends, making Yojoa a very popular weekend gastronomic destination. Eating at the water's edge, with a view of the lake and the mountains, is a simple but memorable experience.
The area's culinary offering goes beyond fish: the region is also known for its coffee, and very especially for having D&D Brewery, Honduras's pioneering craft brewery (near Los Naranjos), which offers locally made beers (including varieties with flavors like apricot, strawberry and blueberry) and also lodge-style accommodation. Getting there: diners along the shore and the highway; D&D Brewery in Los Naranjos, 4 km from the main highway. Best time: lunch; busier on weekends.
ℹ️ Distance: Diners along the shore and the highway; D&D Brewery in Los Naranjos, 4 km from the main highway · Best time to go: Lunch; busier on weekends · Entry: Whole fried fish with a side L 150-300 (US$ 6-12) per dish; D&D Brewery craft beer L 60-100 a pint (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Los Naranjos archaeological site
One of the oldest settlements in Honduras, an eco-archaeological park by the lake with trails and birds.
The Los Naranjos Eco-Archaeological Park, on the northern shore of Lake Yojoa, protects one of the oldest and most important archaeological sites in Honduras. Research has revealed that this place was inhabited more than two thousand years ago, making it a testimony to the early human occupation of the region and to the cultures that flourished in this zone of contact between the Maya world and the peoples of the country's center.
The site preserves structures like mounds, platforms and remains of ancient constructions. Although it doesn't have the monumentality of a Maya site like Copán, its historical and archaeological value is considerable.
What's appealing about Los Naranjos is that it combines archaeology with nature: the park has trails and boardwalks that run through the forest, the wetlands and the lake shore, which also makes it an excellent place for birdwatching. It's best to visit in the morning, bringing repellent, water and binoculars. Getting there: in the community of Los Naranjos, northern shore of the lake. Best time: morning (better for birds), clear days.
ℹ️ Distance: Northern shore of the lake, community of Los Naranjos · Best time to go: Morning (better for birds), clear days · Entry: About L 50-100 (US$ 2-4) (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Taulabé Caves
An extensive system of natural caverns 20 km from the lake, with stalactite formations and an adventure section.
The Taulabé Caves, in the municipality of Taulabé (department of Comayagua), about 20 km south of Lake Yojoa on the CA-5 highway, are one of the most visited natural cavern systems in Honduras. The municipality has 24 scattered caverns, some with important archaeological remains; the main cave, set up for tourism, has a total extent of about 11 kilometers, of which only a part is mapped and open to the public.
The usual route runs along a trail with boardwalks among imposing stalactite and stalagmite formations, in a cool, humid environment very different from the rest of the area. For those seeking more adrenaline, there's an 'Extreme Tour' that goes some 300 additional meters into the cavern, through narrower and less-lit stretches, ideal for caving lovers.
It's a short and very accessible excursion, perfect to combine with a visit to the lake or as a stop on the route between San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, since it's on the same CA-5 highway. It's best to bring shoes with good grip, some light warm layers because of the cool interior temperature, and a small tip for the local guides, who often work on a voluntary basis. Getting there: on the CA-5, km 140, 20 km south of the lake. Best time: year-round.
ℹ️ Distance: Km 140 of the CA-5, municipality of Taulabé, 20 km south of the lake; open 8:30-16:00 · Best time to go: Year-round (cool, humid interior) · Entry: L 30 adults / L 25 students / L 10 children; Extreme Tour (300 extra m) L 180 separately (verified July 2026) · Duration: 1 hour (the Extreme Tour adds time)
